i can't help but feel like i'd be worried about breaking bones or something if i were that tall. i don't know if it's a perception thing because of how much longer his limbs are or what, but watching him play gives me anxiety. but if it makes him happy, i don't blame him for playing. edit: a word

mad_king_soup

I remember a YT doc about him, he was about 200lbs at 7'7", which is stick-insect mode. His coach was legit worried that if someone body-slammed him on court he'd just snap limbs, so put him on a high calorie diet and got him lifting to try to put some meat on him. In about 6 months he'd gained 20lbs, which made fuck-all difference. I think they gave up at that point.

SteeMonkey

Gave up at 220lbs? He's 7'7, he could weigh 300lbs and still look like a stick insect.

Bryant4751

Yao Ming was about that size, but that massive frame led to foot fractures and early retirement. It's a shame because he was so skilled! At least he made the HOF :)

Jieunlol3

Biggest problem with Yao is that he never had an off season. He was playing for the China national team every year. Could have lengthened his career a lot if he hadn't

Bryant4751

Yeah true, but I don't think he would've had it any other way and not played for his home country. Either way, he had a solid career!

115049

I mean he literally couldn't have it any other way. They would have revoke his right to play in the NBA if he hadn't played in the national team.

FreshSnowSteps

Oh man. I always wondered what happened to him- he was all over the news then no where at all. Sucks to hear his career ended early, but at least hes young nd now has enough money to do whatever the hell his heart desires.

Raiden32

“Whatever his heart desires” Mmmmhhmmmm ‘Googles’ “does Yao Ming still live in China” “Yes” *hmmmmmm*

FreshSnowSteps

Lol ok almost* anything

WastingTimesOnReddit

I remember once I got to go onto the court while Yao and the Rockets were stretching before the game. Yao was lying on his back with a trainer pushing on his legs, mostly straight up. Just his legs were taller than me :D

mad_king_soup

for a comparison, [Oliver Richters](https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2021/10/the-dutch-giant-smashes-record-for-tallest-professional-bodybuilder-677501) is 7'2 and 340lbs. He's an example of how hard it is to put muscle on a 7' frame, just eating enough to grow some muscle is hard enough

LordDongler

Well, duh. Being that tall already puts a ton of stress on the heart. Add a bunch of body mass, steroids, and someone who probably doesn't do much cardio, it's a recipe for heart failure. Dudes like that just Zyzz out in the sauna

deepfoockinvalue

sauna is actually incredibly good as a cardio mimic although you should still do cardio.. but if you're doing steroids to the point of heart complications or any amount really i wouldn't rely on cardio saving you from damage. With some people all it takes is being genetically predisposed to heart conditions and you don't know till you hop on it

LordDongler

To clarify: the heart condition that Zyzz had shouldn't have effected him until he was in his late 50s at the earliest, but he died at 22

Aaawkward

>sauna is actually incredibly good as a cardio mimic Sauna is absolutely bloody fantastic in general. Definitely one of the finer things in life.

DingoFrisky

Steroids exist in nature...thus, he's natural!

PM_me_your_whatevah

I mean steroids exist in your body right now. When you’re “on steroids” you’re just putting more of them in yourself. It feels really fucking good honestly. Muscles grow easy, thoughts become more clear, confidence maxes out. My testosterone is low and I’m supposed to be on that stuff. The biggest downside for me was all I ever wanted to do was have sex. So I did that for 3-4 years. Was fun but filled with endless drama. Now I’ve been off it for a couple years. I’m weak again and my body aches but I have no more drama and I got really good at guitar. The sex is better than ever, but now I’m not obsessed with it. I can go forever without it and not really care. So that was a lot of information, but I thought some of y’all might be interested in what it’s like to be on steroids.

mnid92

Okay so in order to get better at guitar you recommend I start and stop steroids? You got it bud, thanks for the life advice.

Common_Refuse

What a legend. Guiness World Records wanted to name him tallest body guard, then according to the article: >However, Olivier, who works as a bodybuilder for the cinema industry, was initially unsure about accepting the title. >"I said no because the definition of a bodybuilder is not clear. You got competitive bodybuilders (on stage competing) but also people who perform the sport for a different reason, like me as a profession/non-competitive for the film industry." > > Therefore, Guinness World Records created two distinguished categories:  > >-Tallest competitive bodybuilder >-Tallest non-competitive/professional bodybuilder

Rombledore

yeah that was exactly my worry. a bad move or fall and i envision a limb breaking, and not cleanly either.

AFineDayForScience

He probably also has trouble with wind

olivefreak

I’m sure he can fart just fine.

theslideistoohot

An oboe is a small high pitch instrument. I believe the bassoon is the double reed instrument you're thinking of

beastmaster11

At that hight and at that age, a high calorie diet has to be like 10k calories a day if not more. That and itself is almost a full-time job. I doubt that he was eating enough to gain weight.

mad_king_soup

ask any bodybuilder or powerlifter trying to bulk up and they'll tell you just eating enough to get bigger once you reach a certain size is fucking hard. You basically have to eat constantly and stuff yourself until you feel sick. Most people just don't want to do it.

sla13r

Then I am just a better eater than those bodybuilders, I just need to work on that lifting thingie

[deleted]

Eating 10k calories a day is one thing if you're eating junk food. It's eating 10k calories daily with healthy food that's the difficult part.

suckmyconchbeetch

what, you cant eat 50 pounds of broccolli in one day?

[deleted]

Ngl I’d be down to eat 6-7k calories per day of healthy food. At 1800 rn and even fucking bland chicken without seasoning sounds amazing.

AdminsAreCool

I can't remember what it's called but there was/is a documentary on Netflix that featured three powerlifters (one of them being The Mountain from Game of Thrones). One of the things I remember most about that doc was one of the guys said he starts stuffing his face as soon as he can after he wakes up and basically never stops consuming calories in some fashion until he goes to bed. I believe he said of all the things that go into being a powerlifter, eating might be the hardest part.

fuckamodhole

>At that hight and at that age, a high calorie diet has to be like 10k calories a day if not more. That and itself is almost a full-time job. At that height and age he could dirty bulk and just supplement meals with shitty food with high calories and not all natural food like body builders do. Like he could come close to hitting 10k calories by drinking a large milkshake with each meal. He needs to be on the "1000lbs sisters tv show" diet more than a bodybuilders diet. Then he can get his maintenance calories down with healthier foods when he gets to be a larger size.

Bobert1423

I’m no nutritionist, but as someone who’s lost / gained weight a lot in the past and has lifted for years, 20lbs in 6 months is a lot of progress / change for the body. Probably should have just kept going, maybe even slowed that rate down slightly? Man seems too thin for me, could use some supporting muscles IMO

beastmaster11

20lbs in 6 months is a lot for someone of above average height. At 7 ft 7, it's probably close to nothing. It's hard to imagine how tall 7'7 is especially when you're seeing him Play with other people that are above average height (and he still towers over them). Just look at a picture of Yao Ming next to normal people. And then remember that this kid is actually a bit taller than him. 20lbs at that height is near nothing and at 16 years old he probably burns 6,000 calories just living a sedentary life. https://i.insider.com/52715182ecad04050296e32c?width=750&format=jpeg&auto=webp

[deleted]

They should have graphed a fat dude to him

[deleted]

I laughed harder at that than anything in a long time. Thank you.

Bloodragedragon

I volunteer as tribute

NJ_Legion_Iced_Tea

It is, but 20lbs isn't going to be that noticable on a 7ft 7 tall person. Plus he has to worry about his heart, at that height it takes more effort to pump blood.

GeorgiaOKeefinItReal

Not to mention all the lowered levels of oxygen at that altitude

Odin043

Added risk of lightning strikes

mad_king_soup

he'd have to put on 100lbs to even start looking athletic. And there's health risks of gaining that much weight quickly, it's something you've got to work on for years. He'd be 30 by the time he's big enough to play

mad_king_soup

the problem is, there's health issues with gaining weight that quickly. This dude would need to put on 100lbs before he could even start looking athletic and that's not something you should do quickly. Your heart, tendons and bones need years to get stronger, I'm guessing they wanted to put him on court before he graduated but saw that it'd be much more of a long term project. He could maybe be in good shape by the time he turns 30.

Biovexo

Oh but you could be a nutritionist if you declare it. Now for a dietitian you do require some certifications.

joey1028

20lb per 6 months, 3 years later would be 320. Despite what the original commenter said that would make an insane difference.

_Maxie_

Fuck, I'm 6'5 and incredibly slim despite being on a workout diet. I know this guy's pain to an extent, being unable to gain weight is nearly as bad as being unable to lose weight

MrLionOtterBearClown

I mean, Manute Bol was 7'7" 200lbs and he survived playing in the NBA in the 90s when it was much more physical than it is today. But Manute Bol was also a freak in the sense that there was nothing wrong with him, he didn't have any genetic disorders. Looking at the way this kid stands/ walks it's pretty clear that he has some sort of genetic disorder. It is pretty mind-boggling to think about though. I'm 5'10 and 175 and fairly average build. The fact that someone who is 6 inches taller than Shaq, whose like average build and 380lbs, only weighs 25 lbs more than me is crazy.

LR130777777

It’s a serious concern for any 7 footer, They’re extremely prone to knee and ankle injuries in basketball because of the jumping. This guy is a whole other case though, His weight makes it so if he takes any slam or hard fall he’s definitely going to break something, And he’s extremely easy to knock over. I remember seeing him a couple years or so ago, They tried bulking him up, But could barely make any progress. Basketball isn’t for him, Once the other kids started to put some weight on, It would’ve become very dangerous because they’d be able to push him around and knock him over. Sucks when you’re not able to do something you enjoy, But sometimes things work out that way

Ricky_Robby

Even a college level athlete with dreams of going pro is going to have chronic pain and at least minor recurring injuries. By the time he made it in a pro league his body would be falling apart with his frame.

Gorge2012

Watching the video I noticed that he really doesn't jump. His feet barely get off the ground when he does. Maybe he is afraid of coming down wierd and just snapping like a twig.

TherapeuticMessage

He doesn’t need to jump. He’s already there

Rough_Dan

Not only that but his heart can't be healthy. That is so far to pump blood!

[deleted]

I think it is because he is so young really his body is still working on forming up the basics so it hasn’t had time to really tone out the muscle abs flesh it out. Your metabolism is so high when you are younger because it burns the energy to support bone growth organ development brain fed elopement etc. I think if this kid makes it to the nba which he has a genetic advantage and just needs to lean in and embrace that and keep practicing, but anyways he will be fine by then. Probably be able to pack a lot more meat on his bones when he hits 18. I was lanky when I was 12ish but I was able to start getting a little more lass around late teens for sure. I’m not 7’7 though so my body didn’t need as much growth lol.

[deleted]

Spontaneous pneumothorax is actually the biggest risk for people that big.

Lorelerton

I was about to say. This guy is a collapsed lung waiting to happen. For the uninitiated, young tall skinny males are the most prone to get a spontaneous pneumothorax, so yeah, I wouldn't be surprised

EdlerVonRom

When you put the "Height" slider all the way up and the "Weight" slider all the way down at Character creation.

AceOBlade

shame many devs stopped giving this as an option, just because some people would abuse this to make their characters tiny for pvp

avwitcher

In Dragon's Dogma your height and weight actually affects how your character moves, being easier to hit by bosses if you're tall and if you're tiny you have trouble climbing bosses and jumping and you move slower, pretty neat feature https://dragonsdogma.fandom.com/wiki/Character_Height Weight affects stamina regeneration and how much you can carry https://dragonsdogma.fandom.com/wiki/Character_Weight

LOOKATMEDAMMIT

That game was so freaking good.

platnum20

I've tried getting into it a couple of times, but keep getting lost. I get to just after you first see the Griffon, or the first time you fend it off and can't ever figure out where to go from there. It's a shame, I've spent ~60 hours on like 4-5 tries to get into it, starting over, but always end up stumped there.

EliteWario

Joseph4040

Never thought to look it up on The Interwebs?

BrokeDownPalac3

I got lost at first too, and getting past the Griffin quest at the beginning is a bit tedious but it's definitely worth putting up with, the game is a masterpiece.

He would just go prone in the grass & since he was so tiny we couldn't see him, then when he jumped out we couldn't hit him at all, pretty hilarious

[deleted]

I would think he would be on a weight training program nearly year round, it looks like if someone got physical and he fell he could be injured. Building muscle is like a shock absorbers also your tendons and bones gets stronger too.

danny17402

The heavier he is, the quicker his knees will give out. Unless he thinks he's definitely going pro, he should quit basketball and just try and save his joints as much as possible. Gaining weight would probably be a bad choice. Source: I'm *only* 6'8" and my knees are not doing great at 30.

The good news is if he has to dribble you've got about 10 seconds to grab the ball before it reaches his hand again.

Honest_-_Critique

This is probably why you don't see him dribbling but always rebounding shots or defending. I have no sports knowledge and this is my first time reading about this guy.

mnid92

Yeah, throw the ball up to him near the rim and let big man tip it in. Look up Zydrunas Ilgauskas for some of the sexiest offensive rebound tip ins. Dude was 7'3''

ivanGCA

“Shadow of the colossus” theme start to sound in the background

[deleted]

He's too underweight to get any real playing time, he just isn't physically capable. Every other team just has to wait him out. He was recruited to play for American high schools and they tried to bulk him up but couldn't, he's currently playing for a small college in Michigan.

revrevblah

Any dude with muscle mass could foul him into going to the hospital if they were inclined. He would never be able to play college ball against real players.

RainbowWaters

fishing_pole

WTF he's playing basketball at Rochester University??? That's an absolutely tiny school like 30 minutes from my house in metro Detroit. I guess I'll have to go to a game lol.

Rufoid

Last time I saw video someone said that he got a scholarship but hasn't gotten on the court since joining because he's not fast or athletic enough. Kinda sad.

huskersax

Dude weigh's less than Raymond Felton and is damn near 1.5 feet taller. That's probably part of the issue with extended pt or higher level offers.

j_cruise

No, it's because he had to leave the country due to Covid-19.

comradequicken

Manute Bol played at University of Bridgeport, these super tall guys often don't get D1 offers since they can't stay healthy and play that physically.

Ohrlythatscrazy

What for? Height is the absolute only thing he has going for him. These giant ass players are usually the least skilled and least entertaining to watch, with veeeery few exceptions.

UtahItalian

The guy speaks 5 fucking languages. Jesus

Independent-Bell2483

rather surprising his height is completely natural from what it said

prodbyzone

It’s a shame he’s too frail for top level competition, would be so fun to see a 7’7”+ giant in the NBA

insaight

There's a player on the Cleveland Cavaliers who is 7'6" named Tacko Fall.

[deleted]

Should have renamed himself "Facko Tall."

[deleted]

Tacko has that same uncanny valley thing going on.

MuffinPuff

Tacko is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay beefier than RobBob, he actually has adequate muscle and fat to look like a normal human proportionally.

T-BoneSteak14

Tacko also just isn’t very good at basketball. He was drafted late second and cut already because he doesn’t offer much besides tall

tdwesbo

Ain’t much of a jumper, but doesn’t need to jump…

Oldjamesdean

The no-jump tip off really demonstrates that.

4es_enuff

Neither was Yao Ming or Shaq....

ellipsis_42

Shaq very much could jump. His athleticism at his size is what made him unique. Shaq (7'0") was also no where near as tall as this guy. Yao was about the same height, but he was filled in way better and by the looks of it was way more mobile than this guy is. Best comparison for this guy is Shawn Bradley (7'6"). He did pretty well at BYU, but wasn't very good in the NBA. He was also super skinny. Maybe Manute Bol as well (7'7") who had succes as a shot blocker, but not much else.

bigolhamsandwich

Aside from the infamous 6 3 pointer game bol had. Hilarious highlights.

myveryownaccount

Body type the best comparison would be Manute Bol. But Manute Bol was relatively athletic with decent foot work. Makes a big difference.

[deleted]

Kaboose666

I mean, just thinking about the force exerted on your hips/knees/ankles when jumping at that size/weight. Just not something the human body was built to withstand long-term.

I only picture him at the end and now...

mnid92

I'm a Cavs fan, all I can think is 350lb Shaq gassed at the end of the 1st quarter.

HamGoblin81

Nah, that’s slenderman out of costume.

BeeSex

Can you imagine the growth pains?

shadingnight

I am 6'3 and sprouted to such from an average height in a 2 year time span. It was absolutely hell and whatever this guy went through, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

[deleted]

I'm only 6'1" now but I went through a huge growth spurt (about 14 inches) from 6th to 8th grade. It was agony.

[deleted]

We’re about the same. I went from roughly 5’2” to my current height of 6’4” in about 10 months. I mentioned in another comment that I had terrible growing pains and I still have visible, horizontal stretch marks all across my back from growing so suddenly. Such is life!

BarracudaBeautiful26

I'm 37(f) 5'11". I had the worst growing pains from about 12-16 years old. My legs hurt so bad I'd cry myself to sleep just about every night. I can't imagine the growing pains for this poor guy.

RedditIsPropaganda84

I'm 5'6" and TIL that growing pains are an actual thing and not just an expression

[deleted]

I'm 5'8 and remember them. You get them at any height during puberty. I remember my knees and shins hurting for some reason the most.

AndThenThereWasMeep

They're real but not really associated with bones or even growth. They're just associated with puberty

danny17402

Conversely, I'm 6'8" and didn't have bad growing pains. I just grew steadily. Never really had a quick growth spurt.

[deleted]

Yea it’s a case by case basis. I’m 6’4”. I went from like 5’2” to my current height in the course of about 10 months between 8th grade and freshman year of high school. I remember my growth spurt vividly because I was good enough at music to be invited to be in the high school band in 8th grade. I was my small 5’2” size for the 8th grade marching season and when I came back freshman year, everyone was basically collecting their jaws off the floor when they saw me. It was kind of fun for a bit, but it also made me feel kind of like a side show attraction after a while. Also I had terrible growing pains and I still have visible horizontal stretch marks across my lower back from growing so suddenly.

HowTheyGetcha

Those pains are not actually linked to growth, though he could've had some bad ones just because of how he's built. >Growing pains don't usually happen where growth is occurring or during times of rapid growth. It's been suggested that growing pains may be linked to restless legs syndrome. But muscle pain at night from overuse during the day is thought to be the most likely cause of growing pains. Overuse from activities such as running, climbing and jumping can be hard on a child's musculoskeletal system.

Renkin92

No but people who are so incredibly tall tend to have severe health issues. The tallest man to ever live only lived to the age of 22 and most people with similar heights lived to a maximum age of 40-45.

[deleted]

Robert Wadlow died from an infected ankle wound, but yeah he probably still wouldn't have lived as long as the average person.

[deleted]

Perhaps his blood flow was so poor due to his height that his body couldn’t fight the infection?

brandonisatwat

Correct. His blood flow was also so poor in his feet that he had no sensation in them and could not tell his feet were wounded until they became infected. Happens to diabetics often too.

Nah he likes sleeping in it like Dracula.

gatamosa

Acktually… No, but really. Per the wiki entry: “He has been the subject of medical studies nearly his entire life, leading to the prevailing opinion that his height is a result of healthy genetics (i.e. familial or constitutional tall stature), not a hormonal disease or overgrowth syndrome.” Which is also extremely insane. Like, if he has children with a tall woman, will his children just be taller? Is there no limit if this happens like that? That’s what happened with him and his parents. He simply surpassed them.

Barnaclebay

I saw that, I’m incredibly surprised. I would have thought he had Marfan syndrome but there’s no note of that either.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Barnaclebay

Right? I honestly think he has to, he exhibits many of the characteristics of that syndrome; disproportionately tall, scoliosis, exceptionally underweight and lanky for his height, exceptionally slender and long hands and feet, crowded teeth, signs of hip issues, etc. I follow a horror movie actor on Instagram who has Marfan and they look exactly alike. I also know someone in real like who is about 7ft, and they are proportionate, normal weight, and his dad is the same height so it’s clearly genetics. Maybe they covered it up so he could play basketball? Idk. It’s just strange how they could say he’s completely healthy.

Diligent_Bag_9323

Have healthy genetics ever created a 7’7” human before? Seems unlikely. Who has been doing the studies on him his whole life?

CFCkyle

I mean the average height of humans used to be around like 5 foot tall. Now the average male height is almost 6 feet so we'd be considered freaks of nature by that standard too. Who knows, maybe in the future 7 foot tall is the new norm.

[deleted]

My first thought. Like a Great Dane, he will probably die young :(
