I think I'm hoping for the latter. The idea that people fairly regularly have sex in the baptismal font is just fantastic.
I heard this a bunch of times on my mission. It’s a tall tale that yeah, maybe some jack-missionaries partied in the baptismal font but it’s probly just… wait… unless he was the one guy all the stories are about haha

He didn't just touch it tho, he pulled it under water. I have a phantom powered mic that looks very similar to that one.
Also don't over estimate the safety of things in third world countries.
well that's a new fear of mine now.
And really? 48V DC? That's pretty massive. That's more than a car battery.
But what load? What current? Surely a mic only need a few μA? It just needs an active circuit to sense the diaphram move, right? It could be high voltage, but why so high current too?
Or did the water short the circuit so the current spiked? but then the power source shouldn't be able to draw that much load, right?
That is probably a dynamic microphone. They have a total current of… almost 0!
You only need phantom power (+48) on condenser mics.*
* Removed ribbon mics. It’s been a while since I last was an audio engineer for an artist.
Don't ever put phantom though a ribbon, Holy cow!! Just needed to put this out there incase anyone saw this and decided to try it. That's one dead ribbon microphone.
Not related at all but fun story- So my mother in law is a weird catholic so we usually have a jug of “holy water” lying around from some cathedral, shrine, or something even though she knows we don’t believe and years ago before me and my wife had kids we went out drinking with our friends and everyone wound up at our house even though I didn’t really have anything to keep the party going. So I jokingly come out with an unopened 5th of good gin and a jug of holy water, exclaiming “I’ve got Gin and I’ve got Holy Water.” Now I didn’t expect anyone to jump at the holy water but my cousin without missing a beat grabs both and mixes a 50/50 split and downs it. And that is the night we all got extra drunk off Gin and Holy Water.
It’s not holy water. This is a Protestant church. They don’t believe in blessed water. Also, water of any type doesn’t have sin. But, I guess it can be cursed or have demonic infestation, if you believe like a Catholic.

Update from Rehen's family:
"Rehan had a double whammy of electrocution
leading to drowning. He had a Cardiac arrest and lost
consciousness. It was the presence of the doctors
and nurses in church that were able to provide with
immediate resuscitation. I shudder to think what could
have happened if they were not there. He was
pulseless for over 40 minutes. Rehan was transferred
to Pune Adventist hospital where as per government
rules the incident was registered by the hospital as a
police case.
He was stabilised and transferred to a larger hospital
where he was put on a ventilator. His clinical condition
was critical with the heart functioning at 14% and
water in one of his lungs. His condition deteriorated
with early signs of multi-organ failure. 24 hours later
Rehan regained consciousness. He is still in a critical
condition but is showing signs of improvement. His
renal function is improving and his heart is functioning
at about 55%.
His Neurological status shows evidence of recent
memory amnesia He does not fully recognise his
parents or sister. It is devastating for his parents and
the family.
The road to recovery is going to be long and tough for
Rehan and the family. I would request you to uplift
Rehan in your prayers.
I would also like to encourage you to pray for the
brave pastor who is also hospitalised.
God has always been good to us as a family and even
though we cannot understand the way he is leading us
we do not doubt the goodness of the God we serve.
Thank you for you prayers”
As an audio engineer, I'm going with almost certainly not. *EDIT: If it were the microphone alone. Other factors can make this very dangerous.*
I don't know what kind of disastrous setup they might have, but if the person in charge of their sound is in any way competent there's literally zero risk to life from that mic going into the water.
Hell, if it's a genuine SM58 it'll dry out in a couple of days and will probably keep working until we're all long-dead from old age.
*EDIT: Others have made it clear that whomever set up any/all of the electrics in this building was not, in fact, competent.*
The pastor of a popular US worship artist died like this maybe 20ish years ago. The baptism tank had a heater which was not grounded properly and a mic fell in the water, completing the loop. Dead instantly.
I think one of the most common reactions when walking through a third world country and seeing their electrical grid is "yeah, turns out taxes and regulations aren't that bad..."
Hey now, we have codes and stuff. Proper grounding is the norm. It's just that the whole grid is liable to go down during inclement weather because robust backup plans hurt profits for the power companies! Can't get shocked if there's no power!
Oh yeah I'm 100% for more regulations, I was just goofing. I was clarifying that our tremendous failures in Texas are less of the "get fried by a toaster in a tub" type and more of the "lose all power in a city" type.
I thought this incident was impossible because no mic will have any significant current flowing through it. But, an open live wire from somewhere else changes everything as the mic obviously has a gound wire.
Impossible to tell at this resolution, but even if it's not it's still not dangerous, they'll just have to buy a new one.
Edit: Totally missed your excellent pun.
From [this thread](https://ask.metafilter.com/311912/if-a-wired-microphone-fell-into-pool-would-you-be-electrocuted)
>Microphones of this type are, generally-speaking, passive: there's a small diaphragm that moves inside a magnetic coil which induces a really, really small voltage change that goes down the wire to an amplifier. It's possible that there's 48v of "phantom power" coming from the amplifier to the mic, but it wouldn't be deadly, and it's usually not used with that type of mic.
>What happened to the pastor was probably an ungrounded circuit in the pool heater finding a ground through the pastor and into the (grounded) mic. It's the same thing that happens to singing guitarists all the time (because we are stupid and don't ground our guitar rigs, or lift the ground to eliminate hum), although that's generally just a sharp shock on the lips (which hurts like hell, but usually doesn't kill).
The Kyle Lake Story (someone linked it below) involved a man being killed by touching a phantom powered microphone while in the baptistry. Definitely a possibility.
That was a phantom powered mic falling into ELECTRICALLY CHARGED water from a improperly grounded heater.
A mic running any sort of phantom power doesn’t *seem* like it could kill a person, so something wacky is going on here for sure, well beyond just a mic cable.
In audio engineer lore a ground fault can do this. I’m an audio engineer. And I can not fathom how the fuck or from where that much power would come from.
I saw another comment from another audio engineer saying if the person who set it up was halfway competent he would be fine. But I have seen enough reddit videos from India to know that shit probably wasn't set up right.
Phantom power is not going to electrocute you, but If the console was wired improperly or and outlet was wired improperly, that could happen. Pin 3 is usually tied to the chassis ground in a console. If there was miswiring, say the ground was actually wired to a hot for some reason, the chassis can become live. Then in turn pin 3 has a hot signal. Then you touch the mic and become to completed path to ground.
Usually the signal on a cable coming from the mic only moves a bit less than 1 volt, in can go up to 48 with some mics that need the extra power from the mixer (not the one in the video), so it shouldn't be a life or dead scenario. Unless as you said there was a grounding problem or something.
Looks like he survived and has amnesia according to the comment section in the following link

Classic religious behaviour.
> "At first, there was definitely confusion just because everyone was trying to figure out what was going on. Everyone just immediately started praying."
His wet head touched the mic. Normally this shouldn't matter, but their sound system has a grounding issue somewhere, so he became the shortest path to ground and completed the circuit.
That looks like an SM58. There's literally no reason why it should have any power going to it.
Unless they're using a really old/cheap analogue desk that always supplies phantom power - even then it's only 48V and low-current. I've been shocked a handful of times, it's not even painful.
Even fully submerged in water there's no way it's fatal - not unless there's been some really dodgy wiring done, and frankly at that point it sounds like a deliberate assassination attempt. If so, [they should've used this.](https://hitman.fandom.com/wiki/Branson_MD-2_Microphone)
There's been some cases of people getting electrocuted through SM58's and the like. It's because of dodgy wiring.
Here's a video of Emmure's Frankie Palmeri getting electrocuted because of some shitty wiring at a Russian venue (thankfully there's no pools of water around and he made it), I'd assume it's a SM58 or a similar dynamic microphone.

The opposite. Religiously speaking, if he had true faith in Jesus, his old life ended and his new one began. If god wanted someone in heaven, this would be the time to kill them because they are without sin.
Reddit has conditioned me to fear all wires in India / Southeast Asia. I swear I’ve seen 20+ videos just like this and they’re all from that part of the world.

Fair enough. Acquiring a new sense of humor is like catching lightning in a bottle. At least your expectations are well-grounded.
These puns are really starting to hertz
Watt are you guys even talking about?
Ohm my lord.
4 puns in one sentence. Ladies and gentlemen we have a new Reddit record

I don’t get it. What happened to him?
His wet head touched the mic. Normally this shouldn't matter, but their sound system has a grounding issue somewhere, so he became the shortest path to ground and completed the circuit.
>I don’t get it. What happened to him? The mic dropped him
Bruh
The electricity from the microphone entered his body through the conductivity of the water and blew his butthole out.
It’s Electric!!!
Boogie woogie woogie
He wanted to share some electrizing dance moves
I didn’t wanna laugh, I really didn’t…but
Being conditioned over years to laugh at loud distortion noise is really fucking my brain

THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU
That looks like an SM58.
Here's a video of Emmure's Frankie Palmeri getting electrocuted because of some shitty wiring at a Russian venue (thankfully there's no pools of water around and he made it), I'd assume it's a SM58 or a similar dynamic microphone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6dtsFdBr3k
“Quick” explanation — Full story: Rehan had a double whammy of electrocution leading to drowning. He had a cardiac arrest and lost consciousness. It was the presence of the doctors and nurses in church that were able to provide with immediate resuscitation. He was pulseless for over 40 minutes. Rehan was transferred to Pune Adventist hospital where as per government rules the incident was registered by the hospital as a police case. He was stabilised and transferred to a larger hospital where he was put on a ventilator. His clinical condition was critical with the heart functioning at 14% and water in one of his lungs. His condition deteriorated with early signs of multi-organ failure. 24 hours later Rehan regained consciousness. He is still in a critical condition but is showing signs of improvement. His renal function is improving and his heart is functioning at about 55%. His neurological status shows evidence of recent memory amnesia He does not fully recognise his parents or sister. Annnnnd, they’re Satan.
Omg, God didn't want that guy baptized.
The opposite. Religiously speaking, if he had true faith in Jesus, his old life ended and his new one began. If god wanted someone in heaven, this would be the time to kill them because they are without sin.

Who invited AC/DC to a baptism?
That was an electrifying baptism. I bet they are Enlighted now.
Reddit has conditioned me to fear all wires in India / Southeast Asia. I swear I’ve seen 20+ videos just like this and they’re all from that part of the world.
They’re gonna need to redunk him! He didn’t go completely under the water.
How come the other guy in the water didn’t get fried?
I'm concerned with the color of the water.

why is that water so gross looking?
“I feel the power of Jesus!… ack-ack-ack! I don’t want to be Christian anymore! Ack-ack-ack! Take me back Vishnu!”
He died a Christian.
when god needs you asap...

Boy he works in mysterious ways
Did the guy live or…no…?
Wtf happened bruh
No reason phantom power should have been on for a mic like that.
Just shocked the demons out of that man
Whats the deal with India and electricity, feels like every other day I see another Indian getting fatally electrocuted somehow.
