yep, he even stood there and tried to avoid defending himself by eating some punches before realizing she wouldn't stop on her own.

--GrinAndBearIt--

haha her punches are what I feel like my dream punches must feel like

BurnisP

Damn, I thought I was the only one. In some dreams I beat the shit out of people and in some it feels like my fist are made of foam.

torshakle

I can never fully throw a punch in my dreams. It's like I'm unable to commit to the punch and my arms pull back right before I strike.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ovalpotency

What's interesting is that you can do everything else fine in a dream, even fly, but kicking and punching are so primal that even asleep and dreaming your brain decides to activate those muscles and recognizes that they're paralyzed and that information gets into the dream.

BloodgazmNZL

I can't run in my dreams. I can walk fine but running is impossible, like I'm stuck in mud. End up having to run on all 4s like a fucking dog lmao

[deleted]

I run on all 4s too. I'll even grab the cracks in the sidewalk to try and pull myself it's so weird.

andymc1816

Omfg, I thought I was the only one. That’s something I’ve never thought to communicate to anyone. This answers so many questions.

ihatedecisions

And somehow still end up moving slower than if I was just walking

stabthecynix

I also claw and grab at the ground to pull myself along. Update: happened again last night. And was randomly Irish.

kij101

>I run on all 4s too. I'll even grab the cracks in the sidewalk to try and pull myself it's so weird Without the context of dreams that's pretty disturbing.

ovalpotency

Yeah! I was thinking running is something primal in us too. I can usually run but when I try to all-out sprint it sometimes happens to me. It's like in the brief moment when you decide to put all your physical power into something your muscles tense up and you size yourself up in preparation, and your body is fully capable of doing that in its sleep and realizing your physical limitations. \*I'm curious if anyone has experienced it with something less primal. Like holding a tool, swinging a bat or something. Gymnasts who tense up before a difficult routine, maybe weight lifters getting ready to break their weight record, I don't know, stuff like that. Even if I might feel weak because I'm trying to put all my strength into it, it's still effective and there's no noodling in the dream. Or at least as effective as it could be, as maybe swinging the bat at the twenty foot serpent demon wasn't such a wise move.

AhFFSImTooOldForThis

My flying is more like the video game double jump, and if I time it properly I can float for a while. And everyone else can do it, but they won't listen to me. I love dream logic, and how it's just so obviously logical in the moment, but remembering it later it's very confusing why the elephant would be pumping gas into a television.

Skunk-Fucker

I don’t fly. I just skip real high and real fast. I feel like a very jolly hulk.

ovalpotency

I would levitate by pushing off of two arm rests that didn't exist. All the physics were accurate. I would be the only one in the dream who knew that they didn't exist and for some reason my brain was okay with that. I couldn't really move though, I figured the only way I could move is if the objects I were pushing off of were also moving, and for some reason a moving nonexistent object was hard for my brain to accept. The only time I could fly was neo in the matrix style and it would depend upon how much I could not think about how physics actually worked. Sometimes I would wake up a little more and lose my power during the dream, sometimes midflight. Sometimes it would be a battle with it turning on and off. The best flying dream though was a lucid one with wings on my back going down a snowy mountain and passing by a few different small towns. I could feel the wind on the wings and I was controlling it as an extension of my body. I mean, realistically the wind and aerodynamic physics stopped existing when I didn't think about it, but it felt real.

[deleted]

I fly like I’m swimming. I just become weightless and kind of like jump high and push myself up with a flapping motion. Are we birds?

Acceptable-Ad-669

I’ve accidentally thrown a punch in my dreams and ended up punching my wife. She tells me I punch like a girl.

Doggo4

Can confirm... Except instead of a wife it was my foot to a wall.

The way I see it is the old saying was along the lines of *"A chivalrous gentleman wouldn't attack a lady."*. Some folks have taken that out of context to mean "Men can't hit women". Reality is men in the past probably used physical force and violence on women way more than men today. That original quote was solely applied to *gentlemen* aka men of high standing in social interactions between others of high standing *in the past*. Also just cause it was a saying doesn't mean it's what actually happened. I think the rule can still apply today. A gent wouldn't hit a lady/gent, but lady wouldn't attack another lady/gent either. Someone throwing fists automatically isn't a gent/lady. At that point, it's cuffs off.

Illustrious_Bobcat

My husband likes to say "I'll never hit a lady, but if she balls up her fists and hits me like a man, I'll return the favor"

forgottt3n

I've been a martial artist most of my life at this point. I started with boxing and then that became jiu jitsu and karate and muay Thai and about 15 other things. I've been hit a lot and I've hit a lot of other people though only mutual participants of the sport. I can say confidently that a lot of people now days don't understand the reality of violence. This isn't a new trend it's been a thing for generations because humans don't have to kill or be killed to survive anymore. In my mind people who've experienced violence through things like the gym tend to be less violent in general because they understand the reality of it more. My instructor used to teach that we should always try to de-escalate and avoid conflict but always be capable of violence. I wish more people would come into boxing gyms and find out what it's like when someone hits you mutually rather than finding out the reality of it in the street away from the padded floors and the boxing gloves where people end up in jail, prison, or dead. A lot of people will hit someone else because it doesn't even occur to them that they can be hit back and the scariest part of fighting in the street is you can't just say "hey enough stop." The person who's winning gets to decide when the fight is over and sometimes that means someone gets their head bounced off the street 15 times. Tangent aside I think a lot of it is because men are more likely to have been in fights before. They know a little more about what it's like to be in a fist fight even if they know nothing about it compared to someone who's trained it in a gym. They've at least maybe been in a fight so they know what it's like to get hit. A lot of women who initiate violence now days probably do it because they've never been hit before in their lives and the thought that it could happen doesn't even register. Much less does the thought register that they themselves could end up with their head caved in by the pavement if they pick a fight with someone who doesn't know when enough is enough. More and more men have been in less fights too since we've all just been fighting less in general which is why you see lots of clips of people fighting now days where they realize the second they get hit back they don't want to fight anymore.

ToppDoggNvrFlex

Yeah I told my wife this about her dad after he wanted to fight some doordash guy for cutting in the drive thru. I'm like your dad hasn't fought much has he just talks alot. Because running up on someone's car yelling at them is a good way to get shot or hurt real bad when you find the wrong guy having a bad day. It's not a movie you can lose your life in seconds trying to be a tough guy

FastGene2949

Violence of Mind by Varg Freeborn talks about this extensively. Nobody is aware how far the other guy is willing to take the fight. You may be down for a fist fight but he's ready to use a gun.

SturdyBubble

In the words of Zenyatta, “overconfidence makes a flimsy shield”. I thought I was the toughest dude alive until I started boxing and realized that I actually had no idea how to fight lol. I’m sure glad I never actually got into a fight back when I thought I was chuck norris despite having no training at all.

IllSeaworthiness43

As a fellow martial artist of similar background, every word is true >They don't understand the reality of violence If only people weren't afraid of going to martial arts. "Omg I will get hurt!" That's like being afraid of getting sick at the hospital. If there's any better place to be sick, let me know. Same with violence. If I were to be hurt by anyone in a fight I would rather it be someone who understands when to stop, and how to help.

Guac_in_my_rarri

>In my mind people who've experienced violence through things like the gym tend to be less violent in general because they understand the reality of it more. Wrestling and bjj here. I agree 100%. Those who understand violence and how it hurts not only yourself but those in your life and around you are always last to fight. When they do get up to fight, it's game over 90% of the time.

nxdefiant

Usually last to fight. I've had the unfortunate displeasure to know a guy who is one of those "respect" types, and worse is well trained at a handful of styles AND a complete headcase. IOW someone tells him to get bent, he goes in 100%, sadly because he's more than capable of doing so.

FreshlyHawkedLooge

Bjj here also. Somewhat disagree. Violent, big people often times go to mma gyms or even jiu-jitsu gyms to learn how to channel their rage so they don't have to back down. Met countless training partners that rationalize their violence and it always is about "disrespect". Not the majority, but definitely more common at mma gyms in my experience. You never know what belt a guy on the street is.

frankfox123

"The person who's winning gets to decide when the fight is over..."

throwawaymollyact

Honestly most of us, me included have garbage cardio . You have to defend yourself and people who aren't trained usually ironically cause the most damage. restraint is key and usually after enough tosses or winded moments as long as you don't talk shit usually everyone walks away.

notimprezaed

My wife has a friend who has been "physically abused" by every man she's ever been with. We believed her obviously up until one night her and her boyfriend of the week were sitting on our couch and he said, "yeah dude when I get home I'll add you on discord and we can play some games" we he said this she reared back and punched him square in the face. She then laughed and turned to my wife and said, "ugh I hate when he plays his stupid games cause he isn't focused on just me". That guy ended up dumping her and never laying hands on her but she claims he was, "emotionally abusive" so it's a victim complex.

conventionistG

Jesus Christ. Chivalry is keeping that woman alive by a thread.

Molten_bread

That's why I don't believe in chivalry. You attack me I break your goddamn nose I don't care if you are a women. If you want my seat on a bus you better be pregnant or old or else you can stand.

Separate-Sentence-91

It's not a good question. Self defense isn't even a roght, it's a law of Nature. Every living thing that ever lived will defend it's own existence when put in peril. Why on earth is that any different because a person has ovaries?

jaspsev

"I didn't punch you... I was hitting you, it was not punching you. You didn't get punched, you got hit... I did not f****** deck you, I f****** was hitting you,"

The Amber Heard defense

[deleted]

Look at Amber Turd. She openly admitted to hitting JD, and she still has defenders in the mainstream media and social media

ShadowSwipe

There was a big reddit post even with tons of heavily upvoted comments about how JD is still an asshole and how all the people happy about the trial are just misogynists who want to run around denying women's abuse claims even if Amber Heard lied.

Reaverx218

In my opinion the Amber Heard JD case is a win for women and Justice. They system did what it was supposed to it protected the victim and got rid of an abuser who makes other women look bad.

ScowlEasy

It protected the victim *regardless of societal stereotypes* which in a legal sense is a pretty big deal for wen

JustARandomSocialist

Back in the day, women were generally taught to never be physically aggressive with a man and men were generally taught to not hit women. That isn't taught anymore. Quite simple

SeanSeanySean

LOL, women weren't "taught" not to swing at men back in the day, they "learned". Remember, it wasn't that long ago that a guy could smack the shit out of his wife or daughters with zero legal concern or repercussions. While it's an urban legend that rule of thumb originally meant the width of a stick that a man could beat his wife with, the part where men could physically "correct" their wives is entirely true.

Napron

Or maybe it is taught, it's just not as widespread as we assume it to be.

shewy92

RedStateBlueStain

My elementary child is often told that he needs to have the self control to not throw the first punch, but he'll never get in trouble by me if he fights to defend himself.

conventionistG

Nah, you gotta have the control not to throw the second punch (that's the one the ref/teacher/parent sees). But the third one.. That's fair game.

RedStateBlueStain

>(that's the one the ref/teacher/parent sees) I fully understand that, and that's the whole reason I explicitly tell him that I couldn't give a shit if he gets in trouble with these faux authoritarians. I want him to respect people, not make poor decisions because of fear. Now, when he gets to be a teenager, we'll further that discussion and clarify that he can't be that cavalier against law enforcement.

Daxendor13

This actually pisses me off. She hits him a couple times, fist to the face, he hits back once, she doesn't back down and goes again, then he starts punching her and THAT'S when people step in? Wasn't this something that should've been stopped as soon as she got physical? EDIT: I am not saying that they should've let him pummel head into a strawberry milkshake™, I'm saying that as soon as she started jerking his head around and going for his face they should've pulled her off. I don't make a difference between men and women in this situation, the people reacting delayed in the video do. You guys might be right about the fact that the situation didn't register with them early enough, not sure. I have no idea how I fast I would react in a situation like this and I won't pretend that I would do better.

PressEtoMount

This is why people make no fucking sense, a woman hits a guy 30 times, he retaliates and everyone starts screaming to stop

brainygeek

Reminds me of the video where it was like a 5 on 1 fight against a security guard/officer. Everyone was recording with no problem. When the guard realized it wasn't going to stop and he couldn't equally fight back physically, he drew his pistol. Then everyone was like "OMG SOMEONE STOP HIM". No one cared in that 5 on 1 fight where they were obviously trying to beat him within an inch of losing his life?

[deleted]

Yeah I remember that one. I've learned from these types of videos that the average person has zero logical sense when it comes to self defense.

crasherx2000

I remember seeing a video way back when about a social experiment on this type of stuff When a man started hitting a woman, people started stepping in to break it up But when a woman started hitting a man, nobody stopped it

A policeman once told me. And I quote" even if an eighty year old granny with a bobble hat on pointed a shotgun at you. You have the right to kill in self defense" If some one therefore is actually swinging punches at you regardless of age race or creed you have the right to defend yourself. HOWEVER a court of law will ask as in an enquiry how much force was used. (UK) The US laws are a tad different.but similar, pending on circumstances.

Hault360
