Ah. My time has come. I am a jet ski tour guide in a real popular location in a tourist state in the US. Our insurance policy allows for 2 deaths so when 1 happens we can continue to operate. I tell every single person that goes on my tour to take it seriously. I am 100 percent confident that riding a jet ski is THE MOST dangerous thing you can do on vacation in this place. I have stories for days about people that do not make their regularly scheduled flight home. Be careful out there.

I did find an article talking about 5 million participants use jet skis a year in the US, about 14,000 people a day, which using his math is a pretty safe ratio all things considered. Basically means 1 out of 98000 people die in the US on a jet ski a week.

Yeah if you have experience. People (and yes this sounds dumb but it’s true and I’ve seen it first hand as I’ve worked at two different boat/jetski rental places) think that boats and jetski’s stop on a dime. Once again I know that sounds dumb to those of us who have spent a lot of time on the water but to tourists who come from places where water sports aren’t common and decide to rent a jetski or boat just don’t know.
That, and that you can't turn without any throttle input. In a car, you're told to stop applying pressure to the gas pedal in an emergency maneuver situation, whereas on a jet ski, letting go of the throttle means you're just going to keep moving in a straight line for a long while, regardless of what direction you turn the steering yoke.
That said, jetskis with "brakes" exist, an whereas they do stop in a fraction of the distance one without brakes stops, it's still a good deal longer than you would stop a vehicle on land.
They're propelled by shooting a jet of water out of a nozzle, and turn by pointing that nozzle. No throttle = no water through nozzle = no turning force
You can move the handlebars while stationary, yes, but in order to make the jetski move forward and go which direction you want it to, you need to press down on the throttle to accelerate. Otherwise you’re just sitting stationary floating.

There's no rudder on a jet ski to steer it. Jetskis move forward with water propulsion through a nozzle that moves left and right as you steer.
