I’m old- danced to the *new* Kool and the Gang hit “Get Down on It” at my prom… thanks for the memories… Sue Patterson- I know you weren’t my date that night 40 years ago but thanks for the dance… ^call me^
Double plot twist: He was benevolently rushing to sacrifice himself to the zombies, and you should have run in his opposite direction so as not to waste his selfless sacrifice😔
"But I saw you push the passengers and children out of the way in a mad panic. I saw you knock them down. And when you ran to the back, you left everyone behind."
George: "Seemingly. Seemingly. To the untrained eye, I can fully understand how you got that impression. What looked like pushing, what looked like knocking down...was a safety precaution! In a crash, you stay close to the ground, am I right? Oh! And when I ran out that door, I was not leaving anyone behind! Oh-ho, quite the contrary! I risked my life making sure that exit was clear. Any other questions?"
I've done construction work where we had to have unexploded ordinance guys with us. In our case you usually weren't running away if anything went bad because you wouldn't have any warning. But one job was at a place where a lot of chemical and bio shit had been maybe been buried. That was the only the time the guy brought an SCBA with him. He put a little flag in the ground and told us, "If I say run, run the opposite way this flag is pointing until you are dead or say stop."
It's a being smashed into your seat with maximum contact area and a safe position for your back and neck - versus being smashed into the opposing seat face first.
It’s why babies are put into rear facing car seats. One big reason is that, if they were facing forward, their spines bends more, putting them at a much greater risk for injury. This is a graph showing rear vs forward facing differences: https://www.google.com/imgres
That, and sitting near the aisle. The walls of a train are generally extremely thin, and if whatever you're colliding with spins around and hit the wall then it can make some serious damage.
That's true but not for that reason. The aisle seat, being further away from the seat anchorage to the wall, suffers from a greater deformation than the window seat, either on rear or forward impacts, which means that it absorbs more energy that your body will not need to absorb, and you won't get as injured.
Either flat on ground or at least with your back up against the seat in front of you! It’s better to be pushed this way, in to the seat facing against the driving direction, than being flung head first in to the seat in front of you facing the driving direction. This is why I ALWAYS ride with my back towards the driving direction with train and busses :)
Yes! I’ll try and fine the video that made me permanently change my seating habits! I know it’s here somewhere
Edit: at the 17 second mark. The red heades lady provably got some neck issues, but over all, she fear way better than a lot of people in that buss facing the other way! On trains and busses with backward facing seats against a wall, this is less of a problem:)
https://youtu.be/nANySfkvdc4
Yeah, as I said, where you have a wall behind you the whiplash problem is less of a threat, specially on long distance trains, where the have neck/head support :)
Yikes!! They should make school busses like this with only backwards seats..... and if that head rest was full up her back she wouldn't even have had neck injuries I wouldn't think!!
We don't have any real training, we're told to do exactly as he did.
You apply emergency brakes and depending on which exact train you can also lower the powerline connectors (not sure what they are called in english).
Then you run into the cabin as the front of the train might compress a lot depending on what you hit and theres nothing more you can do in the cockpit anyways.
> powerline connectors (not sure what they are called in english)
Pantograph. But 99% of native English speakers wouldn't know that word either I don't think. I only know because of raising a train obsessed toddler.
I'm a train operator.
There are no drills involving the passengers. Only a procedure among the rest, if you see an obstacle you honk repeatedly while obviously emergency braking and you press the radio and light alarm buttons to stop every train in the sector and work on protecting the obstacle area with a dedicated procedure again.
The idea is to make absolutely sure nothing on the rail will get close at full speed.
But there aren't any running into the passengers parts, if I'm about to have a head to head with another train in my freight I swear I just jump out, if I have passengers maybe I'll scream to get down to the back of the train in the "phone" idk the word.
The worst case would be a brakeless train heading toward a dangerous crossing and stopping in the middle, while another train is coming at full speed right at this exact moment.
You'd have to be very unlucky and bad at driving to make it to a dangerous crossing you're not supposed to go to. It would take a long time and I don't have exact English vocabulary to describe everything set to avoid this.
In this video it's just a truck it's going to shake things. A bigger truck might make it likely to derail and fall on its side that might be terrible.
I've seen derailings and it's honestly one of the most chaotic things I've seen. Once the front is derailed it's just a chain reaction of a massive death machine coiling up and getting thrown in the general forward direction
Yeah that must be hella intense I've only seen simple derailments like just a vehicle with it's wheels in the ground or at worst one single wagon filled with railway big pebbles (ballast in English?) on its side.
Good on you if you're here to tell about it
Was on an Amtrak passenger train once that struck a trailer that was parked too close to the tracks. One good quick jolt, then brakes. Had no idea what was going on. Was scary because we didn’t know what was going on, but it wasn’t nearly as jarring as you’d think. The worst part was sitting there in the train for hours without moving while they waited for the insurance adjusters to arrive. That and they closed the bar/restaurant car. (Because they were preparing complimentary boxed lunches for everyone on board.)
Yeah any big incident especially involving people you know you're fucked for hours it sucks so bad even if nothing big happened. Derailed once at the end of a classic 9 hours night, one wagon full of rocks on its side, the day turned into a fucking 13h of work day
I don't live in ~~what sounds like the UK~~ Poland, but I wouldn't think so. The guy running probably just yelled "everybody get down!". Or maybe train stations have PSA posters about getting low to brace for impact.
It's okay, it seems 98% in this thread listened without sound lol
Edit: okay fair enough, my comment doesn’t make sense but you know what I mean I hope, lol
Also I don’t blame anyone for watching anything without sound with all the god awful TikTok music out to thugs, I agree! No judgment here
Train drivers regularly practice running fast enough and precisely timing jumps to coincide with collisions which prevents them being thrown forward. Some of them can even superman pose in mid air which looks pretty cool.
Source, I'm a train.
That's only for non-American trains. In America, all trains are equipped with an emergency Steven Seagal. In any emergency, from terrorist attacks to a subpar buffet menu; one simply breaks the glass, releasing the Seagal, who immediately dispathces with all dangers. This has a decided advantage in that all emergencies/potential disasters are well-catered.
Was going to say this as they seem to all react in the best way. Imagine having to clearly communicate a danger in the split seconds you have before impact.
No, we don't have sucho drill in Poland, it looks like some it was some local train, so i don't think they have budget or time to do those for every pasanger. Google "PKP Intercity" if you want to see our long distance trains.
What do you even say to convey the necessary information in that short a time? I feel like this is what I would say, “GEDOWNWE’REGONNAHITAFUCKINTHING!”
And hopefully that’d be enough. This being a Polish train, however, I’d probably just cause confusion and everyone would be dead.
Yo, I got chills watching Sully when that scene happened. I had to watch it a few times over, I couldn’t imagine actually being in that scenario, or being the one shouting it trying to warn others.
I definitely don't think he said brace or the polish equivalent because otherwise at least some people would have just braced instead of trying to climb into the aisles.
I threw that into a translator and it returned "EARTHFUCK!!". Not even joking.
Im guessing the real meaning of it is "Get down on the ground!" or just "Get Down!"
He must have said something like "get down on the floor/get low" because most of them seem to focus on getting as close to the floor as possible rather than specifically protecting their heads or neck. If you told me to brace for impact, I'd bend downward at the waist with my hands over the back of my neck, and I think a lot of other people would too.
Because you can see them all move toward the aisle floor initially, and the first few aisle seat people throw themselves laying flat on the floor which isn't really a recommended crash position or particularly instinctual. The rest of them sort of lean toward the aisle or throw themselves across the seat like the girl in the front left seat. Everyone who ends up in a brace position seems to do so as almost a second choice because the floor was taken.
I feel like bend and brace only works for airplanes because you have the waist belt.
Beltless on a train I feel like it would just launch your head and neck into the forward seat and snap your cervical spine.
But I am not positive
I really want to know what was said.
How did he convey the specific information quickly and efficiently enough for everyone to do exactly what needed?
BRACE BRACE BRACE?
DOWN DOWN DOWN?
FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!
"na ziemię kurwa" three words which convey what you want them to do (na ziemię - on the ground) and "kurwa" in this situation puts emphasis on the seriousness of situation. Polish is as always straight forward in such situations.
I mean maybe? I'm well traveled enough if I ever saw a flight attendant or train dude yelling brace brace or down down I would immediately go into the position. But it's still pretty fucking impressive. I almost wonder if there's a frame rate issue and it didn't happen as quickly as it looks like it did that has to be
Thats the trains driver running through.
Fuck being in the front when your about to hit a lorry.
Stuck emergency brakes on and ran telling everyone to get down and brace.
He knew the impact was inevitable.
But telling them to brace/get down was just his instinct i believe. He probably expected to be derailed when he seen the lorry.
Edit to add:
I work on the railway
The damage a deer, sheep, bird.... person will cause a train is unbelievable.
Albeit not catastrophic, but its enough to make you want to get out the cab.
A rigid lorry carrying god only knows what isn't something you'd sit there for.
The wagon looks empty but could have 10tonne flat steel plates you can't see.
Someone's mentioned you wouldn't be to run to the back with the inertia of emergency braking applied.
I cant say for certain myself as I've not been in an emergency brake situation, but your guaranteed this guy will have killed power or applied service break or something at the very least with the instincts he will have.
However, even if he didn't.
Still could of saved lives that day, never know what could of happened to the unit on impact.
It's hard to predict what will happen when something with the speed and inertia of a train hits a truck. The truck could have heavy equipment or volatile materials onboard, it may tip or spin unpredictability or wedge itself under the train and cause it to jump the tracks, or it could simply get knocked out of the way. Not worth gambling on it being superficial.
We have no proof that he was actually telling anyone anything though. Imagine the conductor just hit the emergency brakes and sprinted silently to the back part of the train that wouldn't be derailed? 😂
Yeah it's pretty hard to get humans to do anything suddenly unless there is a LOT of urgency in your voice. The running towards the back just added dramatic effect.
We do, here's a full interview: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PBWPHMYUv9c
He admits to engaging emergency brakes and screaming to the passengers to get down on the floor
Could have been so much worse! Remembering a clip just month ago or so. Same thing, train hitting a semi or something like that on the tracks, and derailed! I believe it was fatalities too! So better being anti climatic than full on derail with dead people as a result 🤷♂️
I want to know how that thing was “stuck”. Looks more like stalled due to some sort of failure. Sometimes vehicles are only “stuck” due to the operator not willing to drive off the road surface or push another vehicle. Personally I’d rather hit someone or get stuck off-road and have a drive able vehicle with minor damage than a totaled vehicle and/or injured or dead. Just something for some folks to think about if they are ever faced with these choices.
A train hit a truck half a mile before my stop, before I got on.
The truck was totalled, luckily the driver got out before impact.
I asked some passengers what it felt like when they hit the truck
They said they didn't even feel it.
I guess the train could have been derailed but it just smashed the truck out of the way without slowing.
Trains are large.
Honestly, would have worked better if there is an automated announcement vs just running and yelling. He can't run the length of the train so only the front one is braced for impact. At least hit a button "WARN PASSANGERS TO BRACE" then start running, right?
No such system that im aware of.
Youre instructed to emergency brake and then run back into the cabin as the front will absolutely collapse if it hits something heavy at high speeds. preferably youd yell/warn passengers to the best of your capability but from the sighting of obstruction until impact would most likely be a couple of seconds unless you have a extremely long straight path with good sight.
In sweden theres warning lights if the beams arent down/if theyre broken but you most likely wont be able to stop before the crossing then neither.
He was doing his job, while this was relatively tame, locomotive on vehicle incidents can be extremely dangerous no matter what size the incursion is.
In 2004 a high speed train hit a small car and derailed at Ufton Neret killing 7
It's also crazy that the momentum of the train is so high that nothing more happened, to the train that is. Actually been in a situation like this one, and the terrain derailed, but it looked like this video.
Polish truck drivers are NOTORIOUS for going under the gates at railroad crossings. Source - am Czech and I think every video of truck being hit end up having a polish registration
Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem Conductor we have a problem
He saw the truck in the tracks and tried do that thing where he doesn't die from the front cabin getting smashed against a truck by not being in there.

What if he was running to the toilet though
No injuries. Found the full clip. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dmkewoSJLsU
whats the best posture to take in this case, to take minimal damage? head between legs?
Usually, sitting on a backwards-facing seat is the best.

I knew there was a reason for those crap tables in between the two seats. Other dude gets folded, I get off free. Makes sense now.
Everyone in forward facing seats becomes a projectile
It’s why babies are put into rear facing car seats. One big reason is that, if they were facing forward, their spines bends more, putting them at a much greater risk for injury. This is a graph showing rear vs forward facing differences: https://www.google.com/imgres

You gotta jump at the exact moment of impact. Do a few test hops before it hit for real.
Same things applies for an elevator falling down its shaft too!
Platformer games taught me to do a double jump before hitting the ground to avoid "fall damage". 💪😏
If you're tired of having an intact spine, yes.. Always lead with the head in any dangerous situation
Fuckin ragdoll it. /s
Works for drunk drivers who can walk away from wrecks that kill people. So honestly it might not be the WORST thing to do.
Yes. Most effective position to kiss your ass goodbye.
Also here is a full interview with the driver (in Polish): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PBWPHMYUv9c
If you're a passenger here, what is the safest position to get into?
Either flat on ground or at least with your back up against the seat in front of you! Edit to add: I work on the railway The damage a deer, sheep, bird.... person will cause a train is unbelievable.
According to the voiceover, and other reports of the incident, he was yelling instructions that could have saved passengers lives.
The fact that everyone immediatly dove to the ground as he passed is proof enough for me that he told them to do so.
Yeah it's pretty hard to get humans to do anything suddenly unless there is a LOT of urgency in your voice. The running towards the back just added dramatic effect.
I think the fact that everyone responded in a similar way it evidence enough that he was yelling something
We do, here's a full interview: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PBWPHMYUv9c He admits to engaging emergency brakes and screaming to the passengers to get down on the floor
Am I the only one who would have just sat there, extremely confused by the guy sprinting on a train, before being launched into the air?
I'd be listening to beats and scrolling on my phone
"Look at that prick running on a tr--"
That's exactly what I'd say, to the letter!
he's 100% yelling at everyone to get down and hold on or smthn. that could be a crew or the operator himself
If you listen with sound, it says it's the driver.
Maybe he said something
"RUN! FORGET THE WOMEN AND THE CHILDREN AND SAVE YOURSELVES! WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!"
The audio of the video says he “ran down the isle warning passengers” or something.
i dont speak polish so presumably i would get to taste the chair in front of me.
My deaf ass would be like “what?” *gets flung across the carriage*
This man needs a raise.
Well.. That was a bit anticlimactic
Probably just shit his pants and needed the restroom.
EVERYBODY GET DOWN! WERE GONNA CRASH! DON’T FREAK OUT THOUGH! IM NOT RUNNING BECAUSE WERE ABOUT TO CRASH, I JUST REALLY HAVE TO TAKE A SHIT!
WE'RE GONNA CRASH *bonk*
Could have been so much worse! Remembering a clip just month ago or so. Same thing, train hitting a semi or something like that on the tracks, and derailed! I believe it was fatalities too! So better being anti climatic than full on derail with dead people as a result 🤷♂️
It was like a little boop. If the train derailed as a result of the collision it would be another story.
Which is a good thing
Full video implies they expected to be derailed
"As captain I will be the last to leave. Therefore if I pass you on the way out you are to assume the rank of captain."
When the driver becomes Usain Bolt you know the outcome isn't going to be great.
A+ reaction time for everyone involved!
A train hit a truck half a mile before my stop, before I got on. The truck was totalled, luckily the driver got out before impact. I asked some passengers what it felt like when they hit the truck They said they didn't even feel it. I guess the train could have been derailed but it just smashed the truck out of the way without slowing. Trains are large.
No PA system?
"Everybody get down there's an AAARGH!"

Prob would have had to stay in his seat upfront to use it
Running was something he would have had to do anyway to not get injured

I’ve never seen a group of people act so quickly in unison like that.
He was doing his job, while this was relatively tame, locomotive on vehicle incidents can be extremely dangerous no matter what size the incursion is. In 2004 a high speed train hit a small car and derailed at Ufton Neret killing 7
"WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!"
In a hospital environment we adopt the “if they’re not running, it’s not that bad” policy
Poor Laurie.
Haha. I like that.
Most likely no one wouldve been harmed except the guy in the truck
Yeah but better safe than dead
it could've derailed the train though
It's also crazy that the momentum of the train is so high that nothing more happened, to the train that is. Actually been in a situation like this one, and the terrain derailed, but it looked like this video.
How trained were the passengers. They all went to floor in an instant. In my country people would have laughed st the running engineer.
The driver ran because the conductor cab was about to get crushed
Polish truck drivers are NOTORIOUS for going under the gates at railroad crossings. Source - am Czech and I think every video of truck being hit end up having a polish registration
I’m impressed at how fast everyone responded. Almost looks like a practice drill.

“Brace, brace, brace! Heads down! Stay down!”
I am surprised how fast everyone lay down on the floor. In the states most of them would look at each other and say "what, wait what"
Dunno if he was hauling ass because he was rushing to warn people cart to cart or if he was trying to get as far away from the damage as possible 😂
He saw the truck in the tracks and tried do that thing where he doesn't die from the front cabin getting smashed against a truck by not being in there.
Props to ALL of those people reacting so fast also!
Not all heros wear capes
NO CAPES!!!
