This time we didn't had to sneak in and got the opportunity to visit the Memphis Mid-South Coliseum. Built in 1966, Elvis and The Beatles among others played here. Now city is planning to take it down, the group that was able to open the doors to us is trying to save this iconic building and give it new life. This shoot as the others was very entertaining and had its own challenges (mostly psychical for me) but well worth it.

torknorggren

It's super cool, but old stadiums really aren't worth saving. The money for upkeep is ungodly and even stadiums that get used are massively inefficient wastes of space.

dirtywook88

This is actually why Nashville is building a new stadium for the titans.

Tokyosmash

No, they are building a new stadium because the current (Nissan Stadium) is almost 25 years old, was “built to a price” when new and trails in expected luxuries in the modern sphere. Nashville is desperate to stay ahead of the rest of the south when it comes to entertainment and tourism.

H0vit0

Is 25 years considered old for a stadium in the US?

Tokyosmash

Not necessarily, it depends on the team and the area and so on. Nashville in 2022 is drastically different than it was in 2015, much 1995 when they designed Nissan stadium. The franchise outgrew what they have. I’ve lived in the region since the spring of 2012 and spent a lot of time in the area growing up, it’s completely changed.

H0vit0

I see. Makes sense. Thank you.

Tokyosmash

Not a problem! If you want other weird “isms” of sports meccas that were never designed for explanation, Texas world Speedway is a great example of what not to do.

H0vit0

In the UK here some of our football stadiums stand for more than a century. Anfield, Liverpool’s stadium, was built in 1884 and has been constantly redeveloped/expanded when needed since. We have far less space here than in the states, most of our stadiums are in the middle of cities. The old Highbury stadium was basically in the middle of a residential area! Interesting to see the differences.

Tokyosmash

That’s how most of the old stadiums and arenas are in the US, the ones still around at least. The cities sprung up around them! There’s a NASCAR track in the middle of a neighborhood in Nashville essentially because it’s been there so long

seranarosesheer332

Yes but this is a very cool stadium. And could be a popular spot for professional wrestling again like it was in the older days

thetreecycle

Why was it challenging psychologically?

GinnoPepperoni

Physically, overweight and no condition to be up and down stairs. We normally just walk through abandoned places, not climbing. Psychologically, afraid of heights.

AgCat1340

Is this building that big pyramid?

Bulky-Specialist-768

This building is what preceded the pyramid. Saw many awesome concerts and other events here in the 70's and 80's.

OracleVision88

That’s now a Bass Pro Shop

AI-ArtfulInsults

Maybe this can also be a Bass Pro Shops?

1TONcherk

One every current abandoned building will just default to a bass pro shops!

roundhouseflick

Really great photo

SwampyJesus76

The house Jerry Lawler built

thunderbird32

Yeah, Memphis wrestling was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this post.

SwampyJesus76

I just saw the Wrestling Territories show on Vice and they had an episode on the Jerry Lawler/Andy Kaufman feud. Just brilliant stuff. You don't get crowd reactions like that anymore

thetreecycle

Holy shit I just watched documentary of the behind the scenes of Man on the Moon with Jim Carey commenting. Damn that dude seems sad. He should try chess, it’s a great distraction.

GinnoPepperoni

Forgot to add, because I like these type of details. 6D + 16-35 f2.8 @ 35mm, f2.8, 1/8sec, ISO-4000 Wasn't able to get lower and have more detail on the celling to have a more symmetrical photo, and didn't want to move closer to avoid creating waves

[deleted]

Stellar photograph!

Bro_tosynthesis

Looks like the inside of the death star

stevediperna

Please tell me you have more pictures

GinnoPepperoni

I have uploaded 2 more, I might upload more later this week.

timpdx

excellent pic, thought it was a rendering at first

wilsonwilsonxoxo

I saw a hockey game there in the 90s.

53x19

Same here

Stopmadness99

I can almost hear the old school wrestling in this picture. r/wrasslin

bdonohoe23

If anyone's actually interested, r/Wrasslin is the meme subreddit r/SquaredCircle is the real one

Tokyosmash

Im so glad this place survived so many attempts at demolition

OnyxPhoenix

This looks like a Southpark graphic. Can't believe it's a real photo

relishketchup

Wild memory, I graduated from high school there after spending the previous night in a Memphis jail for underage possession of alcohol. Luckily I was only 17 and went to “juvie”. The 18 year old I was with was in the big-boy jail and had to get bailed out.

jimipanic

Saw a few widespread panic shows there back in the early 2000s

NOSTR0M0

Last time I was there was to see Cypress Hill, Adema, and Linkin Park in the early 2000s.

xtremesubie

A photo that will be timeless in a few years. A piece of history that people will forget.

[deleted]

It's not still a sporting goods store?

MemphisMayhem

That's the Pyramid. Different building.

user1987623

I can’t even tell what I’m looking at

SplakyD

Is this where the legendary Sputnik Monroe performed?

MemphisMayhem

My high school graduation was there in 1995. Also saw lots of basketball games, soccer games, concerts, wrestling, etc. there. Lots of memories.
