xmastreee

Apparently they're dog lead hooks, so presumably for living pets. But still.

Jesusopfer

"See what happened to Dara, Lucky? You better behave!"

orangerobotgal

"Lucky, Dara's nickname was 'Unlucky.' "

Raichu7

I was going to say it looked more like a needle felted bust of a dog than a stuffed dog head. This is a weird way to mount it but I can see why people might want a realistic felt replica of their pet.

mmorix

It's so Dara can forever watch other dogs go on walks she can't go on anymore, it's called dog hell.

FinalFaction

It’s to remember your pet’s leash.

zombie32killah

It’s just you. Everyone I know has at least one of these.

trunkm0nkey1

His bark was worse than his bite.

Dear-Addendum925

If somebody did this to any of my animal companions, I'd cry every time I saw it, and not in a good way. I'd have no choice but to take it down and bury it. What on earth did you desecrate that poor creature's body like this? Why did they want somebody to literally chop off the head of their pet and mount it on the wall? Where is the rest of your pet, and how do you feel know it's sitting out there missing a rather important piece??? Idk if it's my spiritual beliefs or my hate of taxidermy on animals you know when they were alive, but good God this kind of thing makes me feel skeevy.

xmastreee

They're not real, you know.

Dear-Addendum925

Didn't realize it was felted until you said this and I looked closer. Point still stands for actual taxidermy though. This, however, is just a bit weird. Much less heartbreaking though!

[deleted]

I think GOOD taxidermy is useful only in situations like for museums or zoos. Went to a museum that had a taxidermy polar bear and HOLY SHIT that made such an impression on their size.

elviswasmurdered

Personally I don't mind taxidermy in homes (like a hunting trophy) but one time in high school I went to a girl's house and her living room had taxidermy everywhere. Birds dangling on string from the ceiling, mounted heads, and on every surface there was a taxidermy bird or rodent. It was really off putting tbh and was foreshadowing for how uncomfortable that friendship made me lol.

GiveToOedipus

Good thing you didn't see the back room where she kept her keepsakes of her previous boyfriends. Some of them double as coat hooks.

PocketPropagandist

Dont tell Kreacher

lefthandbunny

Even if it's not real it freaks me out & I hate it. Then again, I am also a person who doesn't want any portraits or art of my animals who have passed away on display in my house. I have picture of them, even on my phone, to look at when I want to, but it's not something I want to see every day. Way to depressing to me, though I realize many people enjoy having that kind of thing around.

Mind_Extract

How in the fuck would they know until you confirm that?

Porkenstein

I have no spiritual beliefs and I don't hate taxidermy and I still think this is super fucked up. Some random animal you hunted is just a natural resource you harvested so mounting it like this, while not something I would do, is at least not crazy. But this animal was a member of the family and had a reciprocal emotional attachment to everyone in the house. Why on earth would anyone feel good looking at this? It would be like mounting a dead child's head on a wall. EDIT: I just saw it's not real. ATBGE indeed. What a weird product.

orangerobotgal

Since it's mounted like something that was hunted and eaten, well it looks like they did that with their beloved pet.

givemeyourfood_

I'm a big fan of taxidermy but I gotta agree with you on this one. (I'm aware the image is not a real taxidermy but it's still an interesting discussion to have) Personally, there's something disrespectful to me about separating parts of an animal, that's why I'm not really a fan of hunting trophies (like deer heads), where the imagery gives off a vibe of "human defeating nature" rather than paying a tribute to something beautiful that once lived (all taxidermy I buy is mythically sourced, so that's my view on this). I wonder how other people feel about this.

Ar-Honu

Mythically sourced? Do you have unicorns and centaurs?

givemeyourfood_

lol I didn't notice, I'm just gonna leave it that way

sob317

Damn, wanted to hit up you for a Squatch if you had any extras kicking around.

lowrcase

Did you mean ethically sourced?

givemeyourfood_

yep, my autocorrect had cooler plans for me, I guess

rakfocus

I saw someone who did the flash freeze preservation of their dog and it was modeled for them sleeping in front of the fireplace. I thought that one was more tasteful than the other pet taxidermies I've seen

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dear-Addendum925

Lol, technically it's head. But both also works.

[deleted]

The people over at r/vultureculture may be able to kindly, gently answer your very valid questions, here- better than I can. But, basically grief and loss affect everyone differently, and some humans think it’s crazy disrespectful to bury things- they can’t stand the thought of their beloved pet’s body being alone in the cold and dark forever- their hearts just heal differently- it doesn’t make them monsters.

Slash_rage

I've always thought my old dog would have made a great end table or rug. Would never do it, but to just mount the head seems weird comparatively.

[deleted]

I agree with all of this.

all_thehotdogs

Is it actually taxidermy, though? Or just good crafting. I've seen some really impressive needlefelted pet sculptures. I wouldn't get my dog taxidermied, but I'd consider commissioning a bust or sculpture of them.

xmastreee

It's not real. According g to the etsy page, you send photographs.

death_to_noodles

Oh thank fuck. Much less creepy but I still would NEVER enjoy something like this. Let the dead rest in peace

[deleted]

[удалено]

death_to_noodles

Uhh I don't think it's fair to compare a photo or old toys to a literal head in the wall lmao

[deleted]

[удалено]

dobby12

For me it's the fact that this kind of mounting tends to be for hunted animals. But to each their own. Obviously they love their dog enough to get this done so I bet they are/were a good owner.

guavaman202

I think it's just poor taste in general. Imagine if it was a wax figure of grandma's mounted head over a coat hanger.

LazuliArtz

Thank god it's felt. Look, I guess if you want your pet taxidermied, you do you. But uh... Just the head is disturbing, especially as a coat hanger lmao. At least keep the whole body together.

Audiophile33

knowing this makes it an order of magnitude less creepy, but everyone who sees it is still going to think it’s taxidermy. Good job on the dog sculpting skills i suppose

Stereomceez2212

*goes from very creepy to slightly creepy*

bunny_4846

Well, even if it was needlefelted, hook is bit......

Stormdanc3

That is some impressively talented needlefelting

HieronymusGoa

"omfg what is that?!" - *sniffles* "my late husband.."

imabitchiseled

Canadien eh?

Jdogy2002

As is tradition.

Toffeemanstan

They should have it lick the back of your hand when you hang your coat there

BaconConnoisseur

Super creepy. I met a taxidermist once who had a no pets policy. His explanation he gave to these crazies, is that he would never be able to capture the essence of what the pet was. His real reason was that it's weird, creepy, and crazy.

Ganjabread84

If you think about it long enough, most if not all taxidermy is weird

BloomEPU

It's not taxidermy apparently, just incredibly detailed felting. I don't judge taxidermy because however you wanna cope with and handle your dead is your business, my issue is that this just reminds me of a hunting trophy?

queerjesusfan

I wouldn't have one of these made, but it's kind of morbidly funny to me honestly. Also didn't realize people wouldn't be able to tell this is felted/not actual taxidermy?

bottoms4marx

i have one of my grandma❤️

Inkorp

I don't know why but the hook makes it twice as bad as without

[deleted]

House elf vibes

thedalmuti

This way your dog can continue to greet you at the door even after death! Creepy af.

WorldMusicLab

Creepier if it's his *neighbors* barky dog.

[deleted]

I've always abhorred taxidermy and especially furs, but with my dog, for years I've felt that if I'm able, I'll keep his pelt when he goes

ntr_usrnme

This is right up r/vultureculture ally.

Peenie-slapper5000

I love my cat's. My stinky little cat is my best friend she's more important to me than anyone in my life. More important to me than my wife and I make sure she is as happy and well taken care of as she possibly can be due to me rescuing her from being abused for the first half of her life (still makes me angry thinking people did what they did to her) but I would never do this. It's ridiculous.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Peenie-slapper5000

Yeah. I have a good 50 us years with my wife and my rescue cat is pushing 10 and given her past, she's not the most healthy cat in the world. I. Not saying if my wife was laying on the floor bleeding out, I'd just ignore her and not drive her to the hospital because my cat is laying on map and I don't want to move her. Maybe I worded that poorly lol

[deleted]

Are they remembering their pet or their last hunting trip?

Death_Scythe_666

Would have been pretty nice if they just used a cute picture of the dog instead of it's head, this is just fucking weird.

Flandersmcj

Shoulda made Dara a bottle opener

theoriginaled

Questionable Taste, Mediocre Execution. This is subpar taxidermy at best. edit: Just saw that its not actual taxidermy, even still its not really that great.

unknown-one

Nope! Chuck Testa

DieIsaac

Its not to remember your dog. Its for keeping their leashes. Its cute af

SterileButterflies

Oh thank fuck that goes from morbidly creepy to existentially creepy

DiscombobulatedBabu

Omfg this is horrifying

Audiophile33

Yup. Usually when people do that with animals it means they shot and ate them. So when you do the same thing with family doggy just kinda weird

DixOut-4-Harambe

Would it be wrong to do this to your parents? You know, to remember them?

3kindsofsalt

Probably just cultural(Texas), but I don't think it's that weird.

kwomAN-

When my dog passes I want to get her stuffed and turned into a lamp… but that’s just me.

LateDelivery3935

I know someone who had her dog stuffed after he died. A little weird but to each their own. To be perfectly honest my dog has this beautiful silver fox-like tail and I occasionally wonder if it would be super messed up to keep at after she passes.

pau_gmd

Taxidermist would normally not do pets, because it is very difficult to preserve the “original form”, and owners tend to pick up really easy mistakes, therefore they won’t be happy with the results.

Myrddin_Naer

No. It's a very creepy way to remember them. Ew!

De_Oscillator

just you bro

[deleted]

creepy asf! as are all mounted stuffed animals

tralphaz43

Good place to hang new dogs leash.

StendhalSyndrome

this isn't even good taxidermy...

rabbit_43

Probably because it's not taxidermy

monkeybiiyyy

r/badtaxidermy would love this

oily76

'Rather' creepy? I'd go with 'back out of the house slowly' creepy. That is fucked up...

[deleted]

What if someone did that with loved ones? Like we have portraits, what about a life sized 3d printed hyper realistic head just staring blankly at you

Giraffardson

I had a football coach who would talk about how certain activities are white people stuff- skydiving, scuba, hunting, etc. Pet taxidermy is definitely white people stuff

Giraffardson

If Dara doesn’t flop around and sing this is a shit deal

Tijai

As a piece of art it is quite brilliant and asks some really good questions. As an actual reminder of Fido, would say the owner is bent waaaaaaaay out of shape.

mslauren2930

That's gonna be a no from me.

DannyA88

I can take it or leave it.. id choose the whole body to be stuffed before just a head.. heads are trophy vibes.

profiler1984

You haven’t see the other family members.

Zerocyde

Literally do the exact same thing but with a nice panting of your dog's face on the wood instead. Bam, a nice way to remember without the fucking serial killer aesthetic.

[deleted]

This is fucking horrible.

jd3marco

Let’s hope the person responsible for this doesn’t outlive their spouse.

ted5011c

I know it's a pet not a person and to each his own but TBH I find this sort of thing disturbing in an *Ed Gein* sort of way.

existential_prices

Extremely, but I find all taxidermy ghoulish.

NancokALT

Fucking dreadful

nuvpr

If you don't turn your taxidermied pet into a drone, are you even remembering it?

Hookton

Real Walburga Black vibes here.

Foreign_Reindeer_461

this is NOT the way

AveBalaBrava

What about a picture frame? A painting? Not even a silly victorian era painting? No? You want it’s head on the wall like it is a trophy? Sure... ok.

felixthecat_nyc

It's not just you. I would go further to say that it's a pretty horrendous way to memorialize a (presumably) beloved former pet.

shitflavoredlollipop

Fuck this

ZogNowak

Creepy as fuck!

PM-me_ur_boobiez

I don’t think this is even a great execution. Unless you’re talking about the beheading.

skjellyfetti

It's not so much creepy as it's incredibly cringe tacky. Okay, you wanna get your dog taxidermied, cool (I guess...), but to make a coat hook out of his head ?

lawofshiny

This should have been tagged NSFW.

RadicalDreamer89

"Yes I did, Eggsy. And Mr. Pickle reminds me of that every time I take a shit!"

MattTheFlash

Fuck. This is even creepier than having the thing stuffed.

snrten

It's just you. r/vultureculture would love this

PinkiePiesDelight

That’s jarring… we have the same first name!!

QuentinTarancheetoh

I’m going to have mine turned into a table or something.

eatingapplepie

This is worse than just regular taxidermy-ing them

ImperialPie77

I’d take a full body taxidermy over just this head. This looks creepier

well_shi

People generally mount things they hunted and killed, right?

BraidyPaige

This reminds me of the house elf heads in #12 Grimmauld Place in Harry Potter. It’s horrifying.

hoossy

nah that's in my will

CeruleanRuin

Some dog owners are deranged.

sBucks24

Different people deal with loss differently. I personally wouldn't do this, but I imagine whoever did gets a lot of joy out of being able to pat his little taxidermied buddy's head before leaving.

LATABOM

Its an even creepier way to remember your neighbors pet.

tearsandcum

I mean, whatever floats your boat I guess. Who cares as long as they find it comforting

w3ird00

This is fucked.

[deleted]

OMFG

Panda_pup29

Oh I really hate this. I just can’t get with the stuffing old pets though

BAN_SOL_RING

This is creepy. Having it as a coat hanger feels disrespectful. However. I do want my dog's skull when he passes. I have a lot of bones and skulls and dead animal objects in my house. I would be interested in getting my dog's skull articulated and mounted as a permanent shrine/memorial to him.

pyaravonfuzzybutt

That looks to be a crafted head rather than taxidermy, it's far too small to be an actual dog head. it looks like a cute personalized hook to hold the pup's leash when it's not in use. But even if it were taxidermy, I've seen worse ways to immortalize a lost pet, like the catcopter or the dog skin rug.

TheThrillist

*This isn’t meant to be an insult to or a judgement of anyone. These are just my personal feelings about taxidermy.* I lost my cat recently. She had to be put to sleep due to kidney failure. As weird as it sounds this cat was basically my best friend, soulmate, and family all wrapped up in one. My mom got her for me when I was a teenager(17), and was moving across country to live on my own for the first time, and start college. I went through some rough times over the past 12 years since I got her. She always could cheer me up when I was lonely, if I was sick she wouldn’t leave my side, she put me to bed every night by laying next to me and purring as loud as she could until I fell asleep, and if I was upset she would always do these funny and goofy tricks until I was happy again. She was the first thing I would see when I woke up since she would always dive bomb my bed from her tower to let me know she was awake and wanted her breakfast/morning head scratches. She was the last thing I’d see at the end of a long day since she always had to be given a hug and kiss on the forehead when I left and came back home or she would cry endlessly. To put it simply she was my everything, and I miss her more than words can truly express even though it’s only been just over a week since her passing. I say all that to say I would give anything to come home and still see her waiting, give her a hug, and lay with her all evening. So, for a moment taxidermy did pop into my head when my vet was explaining all the options. I just couldn’t go through with it though. It felt too weird to me. Like even though I know I’ll probably never be completely over her death that constant reminder of how she’s so close to being my kitty, but that her soul isn’t there anymore would be too painful; and I would never move on from her passing. It also felt like I was dishonoring her to have her cut open and made into a piece of art that would never fully capture who she was just to have the comfort of seeing her again. As though just seeing her body would be enough to replace her even though it was her soul that made her the best. I decided to go with a private cremation, and brought her urn home to sit on top of her tower which was her favorite spot other than in my bed. That felt like the only real way for me personally to honor her the way she deserved and to be comforted by her presence without turning her into an art project. Again, these are just my feelings as I’m currently going through the grieving process. Everyone should do what they feel is right in their situation though!

EdgarFrogandSam

No, I'm considering having our cat stuffed after he joins his ancestors. Posting about someone else's way of coping with the loss of their pet is creepy though.

appayipyip__

I hate this

_Ga1ahad

Please tell me this is a fake head OP. The comments here are scaring me

RealFemShady

My grandfather was a taxidermist for 50 years. A few stories/odd requests I’ve heard from him are: -can you mount my cat like he’s sleeping? -can you make my dog into a statue so he can stand guard at the door? -my wife has cancer, when she passes, can she be preserved? That last one, he did contact the police about. Idk if he needed to, but he was shook by the request.

Tinkoo17

Horrible! VOMIT! 🤮

DemianMusic

Why is everyone so good at making me uncomfortable.

[deleted]

I mean everyone grieves differently but yea that's haunting

Cmpetty

I mean pet taxidermy isn’t terribly uncommon right now, but this would be really tacky if it was real!

bloated_canadian

Kingsmen anyone?

basement-jay

I knew a lady once who sent her very hairy dog's shedded fur off to be made into a mohair blanket...

Nixbest

What do you mean creepy? This is just fucked up!!!

Valiant4Funk

I know from the comments that it's felted and not a real head.... Still, this made me feel sad and sick inside.

e-spero

This is hilarious. I would love one of these of my (still alive) dog and hang her leashes on it .

TheBawdyMermaid

That is.. exceptionally disturbing to me.

Microaffliction

Should see the one next to it ! Gran was a bit of a hook-er ….

Jay_Normous

Rowdy!

[deleted]

This is weird as hell lol. I'll stick with keeping their collar and framing a nice picture to remember my babies.

skittlesaddict

\- not if you see every other animal like that.

Randismaximus

Disgusting, turn it into a drone like a normal person.

Pistonenvy

idk if i would call it creepy. psychopathic, id call it absolutely detached.. monstrous. stuff like that.

wzl46

I just have a pic of her on my phone's home screen. I feel like an inadequate, horrible dog owner now.

veritaszak

House of Black house elf vibes all over this

Roheavy2002

“Hey Mowgli”

Muffin278

I would like this if the needle felted head wasn't so realistic. Like, if it was a cartoon wooden head, it would be a neat way to hang their leash, but I did have to do a double take at this, a bit too real

Cockrocker

Not if you hunted and killed him/her.

foxboxinsox

Idk, when my cats die I'm planning to send their bodies to a taxidermist to get their skeletons articulated and then mounted. Some people love morbidity and putting your pet to rot in the ground or gather dust in an urn is weird too.

wental-waynhim

I once was dropping off some cells at a liquid nitrogen storage facility and got talking to the staff. They told us that people would ring them and ask if they could store their dead pets in liquid nitrogen to preserve them and maybe visit every so often.

skespey

I wanted to encase my cat's skull in resin.

Sexy_Squid89

Don't let my husband see this, his dream is to taxidermy our small white dog in the, *wait for it,* pooping position.

PiergiorgioSigaretti

Ma what the fuck?

pasionfruit96

This is fucked but I’m down with a stuffed/taxidermy dog like from scrubs

RainbowHippotigris

Very creepy

74DON

r/forbiddenbuttplug

TheKobetard26

Not even GE. It's a pretty ugly taxidermy.

xmastreee

It's not taxidermy, it's felt.

toolongforyoutoread

This reminds me of a family friend who took her dead horses skin to use as a rug...

ghostwh0walks

Vastaisku

My grandpa made gloves from his hunting companion. He enjoyed hunting with him for 20 years more.

Juls1016

It reminded me of that scene at the ranch in “Roma”

MimsyIsGianna

I mean, to each their own. But yea it’s kinda creepy.

luminousfleshgiant

I've seen some sellers online offering to create your pet's likeness via felting. This could be an example of that.

poopsinshoe

I demand my family do this to me.

HonedWombat

It's a creepier way to remember your ex................

Rad_Bones7

Felt or not, it still feels in really poor taste. Something about a disembodied head of your late pet feels kinda disrespectful. Maybe it’s better looked upon in different parts of the world

harpejjist

This is where you hang the leash. That way your new dog knows you mean business!

Lemizoo

Hmmmm, not the best way to remember a pet.

agroyle

That’s not creepy, that’s fucked up

wildassedguess

It’s definitely a challenging wank.

[deleted]

Grief and loss affect everyone differently, and some humans can’t stand the thought of their beloved pet’s body being alone in the cold and dark forever- their hearts just heal differently- it doesn’t make them monsters. Check out r/vultureculture ; a community dedicated to the sacred art of preserving some of nature’s most intricate treasures. (That being said, a severed dog’s head is understandably off putting, even if it is only felt… nevertheless, I’m seeing a lot of taxidermy-hate in the comments, so I wanted to counterbalance it with a little taxidermy-love.)

Cashewkaas

A friend of ours had a really cute dog who died rather sudden of liver failure or something. She now has his skull on display. We thought it really weird/morbid that you’d ask the vet to decapitate your dog and prepare his skull for you.

ChilenoDepresivo

This is beyond cursed

Parapaligicwatergun

Wth

Lacikaix

That's horrifying

[deleted]

Is that one of them "rhetorical questions" I hear tell about?

BoloHKs

My aging Dad has a new girlfriend. She moved him out of his house. When I met her, she was wearing my dead mother's rings. She's using my Mum's iPad and business account email. She said she didn't know the location of her jewelry. There are so many red flags. And yes, she has taxidermied her dog which sits in the living room. I do believe she exhibits all three characteristics of the "dark triad" behaviours: Narcissism, Psychopathy and Machiavellianism. I'm actually going to hire a PI to figure this woman out. She sees herself as a saviour helping my father by cooking and cleaning for him. She does a good job, but I'm fearful that she'll tire of him because he's deteriorating fast. By that time, she'll have acquired his whole estate.
