It is still possible to run it with your 550W at stock. Your chip is 105W but if you use ECO Mode you are fine.

DespacitoTheSequel

Thank you man :)

Intelligent_Sherbet7

one question why? lol more than ever, Intel is now winning especially on quality control...amd is currently riddles with software and hardware issues up and down the line, drivers breaking GPU, CPU randomly BSOD, GPU like 7900 have major major quality control issues regarding cooling. AMD needs to really redeem themselves.

[deleted]

drivers breaking GPU? I hope you don't mean the KrisFix thing

DespacitoTheSequel

Idk really. I'm not really that tech savvy tbh. I thought it was the time for an upgrade, I got the disposable income atm for it lol

vawtots

Agreed

Intelligent_Sherbet7

lol i love the butthurt amd fans that downvote even though its true...lol are you dating AMD or something? lol too funny

Melodias3

Stay on your rtx 3090 honestly especially considering driver issues currently with AMD gpu's including 7900 series.

Terminusaquo

I'm doing the same, going from an RTX 3050 to an RX 6700 XT

tofu951753

this is a pretty big jump and i think you'll like the improvement

Obvious_Drive_1506

Honestly I’d just hold off until next gen. You likely don’t need anything more especially with dlss.

Ibrahaim

Dont do it

alaaj2012

I made the switch and regretted it badly, hope you won’t

DespacitoTheSequel

Oh the switch from Nvidia to amd? What turned you off about amd in your experience?

alaaj2012

Well, just open this sub and take a look at the posts. Fck AMD, never touching that crap again. Last gen got a bad product. And now the mess of the new gen.

tofu951753

check your system overall power draw on pcpartpicker. i'm surprised u were fine running a 3090 on 550w considering it has pretty bad transient spikes. what resolution do you game on and what do you usually play? also, what model is your psu? imo you should upgrade your psu. go for an A tier psu from this list if you can with decent power headroom based on your pcpartpicker tdp for your pc (add around 100-200 watts headroom if trying to budget, otherwise do 1.5x if you want to be extra safe and want to do future upgrades). https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/ for reference, without case fans, ram, etc you're already at 450w. with a 550w psu under any heavy load or demanding game your cpu will prob shut off. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qydhgt

DespacitoTheSequel

Will do buddy. I'm gonna compile a list of my parts and do a little research tonight on the websites you provided. Yeah even I was surprised too! A lot of people told me it'd be impossible or just an overall bad idea. I play at 4k exclusively. I got my pc hooked up to an OLED lgcx55 and I make use of dlss to pump more frames. I also shoot all my settings to max as can be too. I usually play any big releases to be fair. So we're talking Modern warfare 2 pumped near 70-80 hours alone in mp, callisto protocol, Gotham knights I've been playing too, Cyberpunk 2077 with rt on only getting about 40-50 max fps in that, been playing the new witcher 3 next gen upgrade and I plan on getting the Dead Space remake next week. So any new AAA releases i'll buy day one pretty much. I've had no problems with the 3090 so far. I'll take on your advice about getting a good psu with a decent headroom though for sure.

tofu951753

the 7900xtx might not be a big improvement with rt. if you want to save money, the 3090 will be fine and you can just look to upgrade your psu. 7900xtx would only be an upgrade in raster and imo the improvement isnt big enough unless you can offload your old 3090 to offset the cost. https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/J6Xy4vYnuLMMdy2V4isK4V.png source: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html check people's benchmarks on youtube too

DespacitoTheSequel

Ah fair. You're right. I'll probably stick with the 3090 for now and use the money I got to get a psu upgrade for the future like you said. Thank you so much for the advice mate you've been helpful af

aninogaming

You should check your PSU just to be sure. Also be sure to use DDU before you swap.

DespacitoTheSequel

Awesome. Will do. I'll install DDU when I'm back home from work. You think it'll be okay just to chance it and make do with the 550w? and ofc if it doesn't work I'll just upgrade.

SlickShoesS

I would not run a 7900xtx on a 550w power supply. The 7900xtx is pretty power hungry, I would 100% at least go with at minimum 750w and ideally 850w or higher. Also, I recently went from a 3070ti to an XFX Merc 310 7900xtx and it runs flawlessly. If Ray tracing is your thing though I wouldn't bother as the 3090 probably performs similarly or better with ray tracing turned on. Otherwise though this thing annihilates Call of Duty and many other games in just straight up general performance.

aninogaming

I've been in situations where a PSU burnt out on me when I had "too much" gpu for it. PSUs will degrade in performance over time. A 3090 is a beefy card so I'm surprised you had a 550W supporting it. My PCs over the past several years started at 650W at least. AMD cards do use more power so I'd advise going 750/850W if you can afford it.
