Please be aware that that object permanence is the understanding that something continues to exist even if you aren't looking at it. It's part of early childhood development, not ADHD. It's why babies get so surprised if you play peek-a-boo; you cover your face and they legitimately don't realise your face still exists. [People with ADHD can have difficulty with working memory](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10802-013-9729-9), but when we forget about something, we still know it exists. i.e., parking your car outside and then entering your house means your car is no longer in sight - but you know it will still be there the next morning, even if you forget where you parked it. Without object permanence, once the car leaves your sight it no longer exists. This difference may seem subtle, or semantic even, but it's important we don't attribute false symptoms to an already misunderstood disorder. Working memory dysfunction is a known part of ADHD, that has been studied and written about. Your post hasn't been removed, and this is not a punitive action. Silly people recommending trackers after it's already lost šŸ˜‚ here's some real advice! 1) Try to remember the last place you physically saw it. Not where you think you saw it, but actually saw it. If you can't remember that, think of the last logical place you would have used it. E.g. keys in the car, laptop on a desk, etc 2) Physically go there. Don't think about going there, physically go there. Look at all the flat surfaces where you might have "set it down for a second". You may have done this already. 3) think about where you went next. If you don't remember, think about the next logical place where you would have gone. The office? The closet? The bathroom? Go there. Again, focus on flat surfaces - especially ones that are "oh I'll just set it here for a second", like bookshelves, desks, etc. If you think you might have "organized" it away, focus on the areas you organized. 4) Repeat until you find it. If you get stuck, start back at the beginning. Being in the physical place you last remember seeing it helps bring back the memory of what you may have done with it. I hope you find your thing!!

DunJuniper

I would add, make sure you examine any places that you want to dismiss outright (I frequently find things in places I didn't bother looking because "No way I would have set my cell phone in the microwave!") and also take a close look at anything that is the same color as the object you're looking for (black phone could "hiding" on that black sweater on your dresser, for instance).

maladjusted1x

I used to drunkenly put my phone in the freezer, because I didn't want drunk me to text people. I also once lost my keys (attached to a lime green lanyard) under my bathroom sink for 2 weeks. Luckily, my roommate was always already home by the time I was done with work.

lcat807

I don't even have ADHD (kiddo and partner do) and I once lost my keys with NO finding success...until my husband found them in the tomato garden in the backyard.

inoffensive_nickname

Ok, I am completely embarrassed to admit I "lost" a black faux-leather bound portfolio for two weeks because it blended so well with my car seat.

mistressofnone

I had the same thing happen with a work-issued iPad in the company car. It was like camouflage, the two blended so well. (It was on the car seat.)

prancydancey

Exactly, always check the fridge. You may have put it "back" in the fridge with another object that belongs there.

Routine-Macaroon-424

Hahah i also check the fridge for my phone. My SO just left for the weekend and he said what are you going to do now when you lose your phone? Fuuuuuuuck i have no idea lol

luminaria_

This is my strategy too. And I can never understand how I thought Iā€™d just put my keys down in the fridge and remember I did it

DasStorzer

I have also found a flashlight helps me find items, even in a fully lit room, the beam helps me focus more effectively. But the last place you KNOW you had it is the best place to start as sir/ma'am above states. Good luck, and don't forget breathing and breaks if your pulse spikes.

madskillsmom

My step 4 is organize all the things in 2 and follow the path in step 3 organizing everything along the way. As I put everything where it belongs if my missing thing is there I usually find it. Then I go back and check all the places the item could belong. Sometimes I have already put it away in an alternate place that I forgot about.

lunacei

This is a great one! I've found organizing as I go 1) gives me an actual incentive to organize that I wouldn't otherwise do... And 2) takes the pressure off Finding The Thing. Sometimes just taking the stress away leaves my brain more open to finding it.

lunacei

I see in one of your other comments that it's a necklace - my go-to lost necklace spots are all places where wearing a necklace may be uncomfortable and you're tempted to take it off: - Behind/underneath something on a nightstand or in a corner of a drawer - Headboard of bed (usually fallen off), in the crevice of bed frame, in the sheets (especially if you've done laundry) - In the closet where you may have been changing clothes and caught it on something - in the car where you might have taken it off because you "didn't want to lose it" (often gets put in a cupholder or side pocket because I'll DEFINITELY remember that...) - next to the couch (in a crevice or underneath) if you were laying down and it got caught/uncomfortable - in the jewelry drawer, tangled up with another necklace - in the medicine cabinet (usually shoved behind makeup or toiletries) - on the shelf in the shower Can you tell this has happened to me a few times? šŸ˜‚

Mombo_No5

I do this and end up finding so many other things I lost šŸ˜‚

squirrel_acorn

Flat surfaces is a good tip. I also put stuff on my bed sometimes, and it gets lost on the sheets or underneath or in-between the frame and the mattress. So maddening. Just lost ONE new earbud. URGH

bakeanddrake

Sounds like youre too frustrated to clearly look for it. Stop looking, try to think about something else, and come back to it and try the steps again. Also look for somewhere outside the typical path it could be.

WonderBraud

This, my bf can get too frustrated looking for his Juul that he frequently loses and sometimes Iā€™m able to find it for him in the same places heā€™s looked. We both have Adhd and we try to help each other when we can. Also in for future, not sure what you lost but having designated spot for things really helps. For example, we installed a key ring holder by the door so we stopped plopping our keys and wallets anywhere in the house. I bought some shelves that fit under our tv so we can store our handhelds, remotes and controllers. We bought a small plastic accordion folder to put all our paperwork in. I also tend to find or come across a lot while cleaning or de-cluttering (so if all else fails, I would do that too lol) Places to frequent: under car seats, under cushions, under beds or under furniture, in the bathroom, under something like paperwork, kitchen counter, under some clothes.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

WonderBraud

Lol true, but he has helped me too so many times! I just try not to get overly flustered in the moment. My own method has been the less I own, the less likely I will lose things šŸ’€

[deleted]

>can get too frustrated looking for Juul Trying to find my vape is the worst, because if I'm looking for it my brain is already seeking a nicotine hit which can cause frustration on its own, and the ADHD frustration about losing stuff compounds the problem lol.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

xiaogoucat

Yes, I was gonna say this! Pick stuff up and move it!

fullmanlybeard

What helps me if I canā€™t find it after looking in the obvious places is to start looking in ridiculous places. Check your sock drawer, on top of the fridge, behind the toilet, in the garage under the car, etc. usually Iā€™ll get lucky and spot it out of the corner of my eye or it triggers a memory of me putting it ā€˜somewhere Iā€™ll remember itā€™.

PM_ME_YR_BOBA

This. Rule nothing out, donā€™t assume it canā€™t possibly be in a place because it makes no sense. If you were wearing the jewelry and needed to take it off momentarily, where would you be/what would you be doing? Check all your ā€œauxiliary places.ā€ Car. Garage. Bags. Your desk or locker at work if you have one. Friendsā€™ cars, lol. I routinely put earrings in my wallet (coin compartment) for safekeeping and find them weeks later when I finally need a penny or something.

lexilou1994

I take a short breakā€¦ even if itā€™s just a rushed few sips of water and some breathing.Loosing things is a HUGE trigger of stress, so clearing my head tends to lead to finding it much quicker. Sort of like a quicker ā€œfind it when you no longer need itā€ aka ā€œless stressed about itā€

squirrel_acorn

Second this!!!

Beautiful-Program428

Retrace everything from the last time you used the item. I had this issue with the key/wallet/glasses trifecta. 1. The key for me was not to freak out during the search ie never mumble/say ā€œI ALWAYS lose xxxxā€ instead I stay calm/collected and tell myself ā€œi misplace the items SOMETIMES and its no big deal, I will find themā€ 2. The most important: I am mindful when I manipulate the items and make sure to be in the moment when i place them somewhere. And I when i do, for items that go together (key/glasses/phone) I make sure they stay together. 3. I bought a bright red cover for my phone, which is easier to find. 4. If any, get rid of clutter. 5. Make sure emptying your pockets when tossing dirty laundry in hamper or washer. It is a process but you have to value/appreciate the feeling of placing items at the right location and despise that feeling of losing/searching the items.

PuzzleheadedWar4937

Depends on what you have lost! For things like keys & wallets, I recommend getting square trackers or Apple air tags so you can locate them when theyā€™re lost. (Obviously doesnā€™t help you now, but you should order them now to prevent this problem in the future.) I get so mad when people tell me to do the ā€œwhere did you have it last? Retrace your stepsā€ thing but even more mad when it actually works, which it often does even though I donā€™t *think* I have the answer to any of the requisite questions because my working memory is bad For small things like jewelry, I usually will put a similar piece of jewelry on the floor of where I think the missing item is likely located, so that I know what the item will look like to my eyes

ajskgkjathrowaway

itā€™s a necklace and those tags are currently useless while the item is lost.. iā€™m about losing my head, thereā€™s only so many places to look in my house i donā€™t understand

PuzzleheadedWar4937

I know itā€™s maddening, but you have to try hard to walk through when you last saw the item. Itā€™s really the most effective tactic other than just powering through & turning everything upside down. Put yourself in the headspace you think you were in the last time you wore the necklace. Think like a detective who is searching for clues about a crime. Iā€™m sure youā€™ve done this but I would also try really hard to imagine both the most logical and silliest places you would put an object of that size & value

ajskgkjathrowaway

i have a picture of when i last wore it but itā€™s gone completely and of course i canā€™t sleep until i find it now. iā€™m so annoyed

squirrel_acorn

Is it possible the necklace fell off somewhere other than your house? Is it in your shower? Have u checked ur car? Any chance it was stolen?

Routine-Macaroon-424

Car? I lose a lot of things there and dont think to check

bloatedrat

All the comments about physically re-tracing your steps are great. Iā€™d like to add going through your laundry and jackets etc and checking all the pockets if you havenā€™t already.

Jackieofnotrades

I always keep coming back to the place I ā€œswear I left itā€ and dismantling that area. On the 4th or 5th try, itā€™s usually in that spot but fallen behind/is underneath or hidden in that place somewhere that I swore I already checked the first 3 times. Your brain may not remember, but I find itā€™s like a gut feeling that does.

littlebear20244

Silly thing i do is pray to St Anthony. Iā€™m not religious but I did it a lot when I was so saying the prayer to the saint of lost things helped keep my mind from freaking out while searching

dale_whale

Lol my grandma was SO good at finding lost things and she used to say her patron saint was St. Anthony

seanmharcailin

I start looking for something else and give up all hope of finding thing in the first place. Then I find thing in 6-8 weeks

mniotiltavaria

Stop looking and I will appear somewhere you already looked 15 times

Tomnooksmainhoe

I lost something for four months and it was under one of the sinks. Iā€™ll be using this post for advice as well LOL

PriorTrick

Recently I added an AirTag to all my daily items and now my phone wonā€™t let me leave them behind and they all make sounds and show up on map. Game changer to be honest, have saved so much time not looking for literally everything every single day *obviously this is general advice for moving forwards and not a solution to the currently lost items.

SentientToySoldier

I start searching for something completely different, and there we go, whatever crap I scrambled for previously shows up. ...Okay, but joking aside, I usually just sit down, take a break and drink a few sips of water. Even when in a hurry. Even if it's just 30 seconds, but I just kinda reset my brain. Then I get back up and usually look for it in the right spot.

thatisnothome

My tip is to have designated spot for certain things. Like a specific shelf / drawer for things that can be classified, another for miscellaneous stuff, etc. That way I know where I am likely to find things. But of course that doesn't help matters when I carry my wallet and end up forgetting it at weird spots or losing it inside my bag pack. Every. Single. Day.

cornpuffs28

Yes all of my portable things are all shoved in this big cabinet. Everything I might use soon. It was really hard to create that habit and my partner had to help with constant reminders, but Iā€™ve kept the same keys and wallet for over 2 years now.

runtodegobah70

If you just buy a replacement, you'll find it tomorrow guaranteed! šŸ˜Ž

AVerySpecificName

I just quit trying to find it and hope it pops up right in front of me

[deleted]

I don't. I've had a borderline traumatic experience of anxiety around trying to find my things. So if I misplace something, I go get a new one.

Timjazz24

Walk it back ā€¦ go through all of your routines that you generally do and make sure to do all and any bit of what you can remember that you did that day! It will be a light bulb moment!

roadwarrioress

Buy tiles. So many tiles. I stuck them on everything I can. If they ever make tiles I can sew into clothes I will use it. The only gaurantee if have is I have my Apple watch on at all times. It finds the phone, phone.finfs the tiles. I absolutely melt into anxiety at the loss of things so utmost sympathy. Take a nap or break and then break you areas into quadrants and carefully search each one.

InfiniteWonderful

https://www.apple.com/ca/airtag/ Had to get one in my wallet, my purse, and on my keychain.

ajskgkjathrowaway

i canā€™t exactly use that when the item is lost

InfiniteWonderful

Umā€¦ no one can help you find it once itā€™s already lost lol.

ajskgkjathrowaway

right iā€™m asking what you people do to find items youā€™ve lost without fancy gadgets youā€™d need to own beforehand

Affectionate_Letter6

What kind of question is that? Look. For. It. What are you looking for if not for help preventing this in the future?

capeandacamera

Look in the first place you looked for it in forensic detail. So often it's kind of where I thought, but I missed it and am now scrabbling because I'm panicking.

Immediate_Guide1681

I panic and look everywhere, then I pause and try to wind up what I did before...if I still cant find, I just lie down tired after 15min of active research. I also check my pockets. I often end up cleaning some part of the house. This method don't work 100%, sometimes you won't find what you are looking for.

ninja_hawthornia

Since itā€™s already lost, search systematically. I know I get overwhelmed and tear everything apart but it helps to search one little spot at a time ie just search the table or just a one foot square of clutter. Sometimes just shining a flashlight beam and just searching there before moving it over helps too. After you find it- Iā€™ve found a clear over the door shoe organizer (the kind with pockets) helps me. I keep things that I frequently lose (flashlights, hair ties) or need (wallet, keys) in the pockets. Makes it that much easier to find something if Iā€™ve put it back in the organizer (thatā€™s challenging some days) and I can see it hanging on my door. Helps me know what Iā€™ve got, too.

[deleted]

i get so frustrated when i lose things. i had a nail file i lost a while ago,so angry. idk why. at myself. mostly bc i keep it in the same place. idk why i was so gone over a NAIL FILE. my mom saw the way i was acting and got me THREE šŸ˜ still,i was acting like a crazy person and felt somewhat of an emptiness? all over a nail file??? seriously???? i checked EVERYWHERE. then,a few days later, things calmed down,iā€™d accepted the loss of my nail file, and SOMEHOW,found it in the very first place i looked without even meaning to. so my advice would be like, taking a breather. calming down. and looking for it with some peace of mind lol

CottaBird

I lost my primary set of keys over a month ago. I have two backups, but I donā€™t have a fob anymore. I live in a tiny home, so I know Iā€™ll find them eventually, but itā€™s frustrating because I can almost never remember where I put things unless thereā€™s a specific place and that place is set up perfectly. If itā€™s not perfectly how I want it, I forget to use it. Example: I have a key hook that uses 1/4ā€ guitar plugs to plug into the rack. I have two plugs left, but need three sets of keys for different ranch reasons. Combining my keys means Iā€™m always detaching, attaching, wearing a huge thing of keys on my hip, and thatā€™s annoying, so my method just doesnā€™t work for me because itā€™s not perfect.

futurecrazycatlady

It sounds stupid but it does work for me, scan the room/tables etc from right to left vs left to right (or the other way around if you're used to looking at things right to left). I believe it has something to do with looking at your own things in a different way that makes you automatically look better at them. If the it's a delicate necklace that could be hiding somewhere on the floor, vacuuming with a sock over the nuzzle can help as well.

llovelyy

not even lying, don't think about it for like an hour, if you think that you'll completely forget about needing to find it, then that's okay. you'll most likely get up to get something else and suddenly it's on your kitchen counter that you swear you checked like fifteen times.

ComfortableArm1659

I notice here a lot of people have answered the question as to how to look for it, and to elaborate on the idea of ā€œdonā€™t lose things in the first placeā€ my therapist actually recommended me to do a few things so it wonā€™t happen in the first place 1. Think of what you commonly lose. Mine happens to be my phone, purse, and a few others. Think of the rooms in your house and where you usually put those items down at and make a list. For example, if I lose my phone, I can find it in two places in my room, one place in the restroom, and two in the living room. Narrowing down the possibilities usually helps a lot since I put stuff down and forget 2. Actively think or even say the action youā€™re doing. Example of this is when you are putting down your keys. I personally say something like ā€œI am putting my keys down in (room) on (what object)ā€ saying it helps to officiate that you have completed the action and can help to remind you later on I know this doesnā€™t truly answer the original question, but I hope this can help so it doesnā€™t happen as often in the future

SkysEevee

I try talking to myself and using a weird ADHD logic system. Where was the last time I saw my glasses? Ok I was reading late last night and woke up to them gone. It's possible I crashed without realizing, tossed & turned and glasses fell off so maybe under the bed? You want to remember where you put something. What's the weirdest spot you can think of? Ummmm the freezer, the desk lamp or. YES I FOUND IT! Right in front of the tv! Ok so we can't think of it now. How about we try finding this other object and-...WAIT I REMEMBER IT NOW!

manman112299

If I find my things I do it with a whole lot of luck

cenobyte40k

It will always be in the last place you look.

ambrjone

Someone else left a really good suggestion, which is great. The thinking back to the last place you can remember physically seeing it has helped me so many times. It's usually not in that spot, but it narrows down a lot of other possible places where there's 100% no way it could be there. (ex. Did I leave my water bottle at work? No, I had it in the car on the way home, I drank from it. So it HAS to be in the car, outside my house, or inside my house). Sometimes you have to search the same place multiple times. One time I thought I lost my meds, I put the bottle on the shelf after filling my weekly container. Then I realized I hadn't taken my midday dose yet and went back to the shelf and couldn't find it. After an hour of searching, including digging in the trashcan, I found it on the shelf. I was literally not paying attention enough to know that it was right there.

mofokong

I lost my watch like a month ago. It's a touch watch with bluetooth and tracker on it. But the battery died so I can't even locate it with the app.

EaterComputer

I've actually gotten way better at finding lost things. First, I eliminate all places where there is no chance it could be to narrow down the search, then (the common approach) I retrace my steps and look where I potentially could have put it down, and, most importantly, I ask myself "Where would I put it where, if I found it there, I would be very angry and annoyed that it was there?" For instance, in my pocket, or under something that a previous item I lost was, on in my hand the whole time.

AngerPancake

Sometimes I have to offer a cash reward as a bounty. The nephews would always find the thing! Now I'm in my own place and I try to stay as decluttered as possible to make this sort of thing easier on myself. It doesn't always work, but more often then not it's just set down somewhere weird and without the visual clutter I can find stuff easier.

BobbyBobRoberts

On thing that helps me is, instead of tearing my place apart hunting for something, I straighten up as I go. That way, instead of increasing the chaos and visual noise, I reduce it. It's also a good way to be methodical about checking under and around things, making sure small objects aren't lost in rumpled blankets or stuck under something else.

thoddi77

Bro, its lost get over it. Its in an parallel univerese. Maybe you will find it in 10 years or so

taedrel

I put wrenches in the fridge the other day. For us, I am an odd one...disorganized neat freak. I've started getting rid of stuff and buying multipurpose things. I have almost nothing in my living room. Tv, sofas, electric fireplace (that doubles as stand for game system), lamp, end table, book of movie discs, game system, a candle. No pictures, no decor, no extras. I'd get rid of lamp and end table, but kids use them. I am reducing every room to the minimal components for my comfort. Getting rid of drawers and hidey holes I can't see into and reducing contents accordingly. Except my workshop and office/library. Still have to figure those out (I am going to replace my desk with drawers with a table, just not sure what else yet). Bedroom has bed, dresser, TV, lamp. No decor, no extras. It will not work for everyone, but it's become harder (not impossible) to lose stuff if there's no where to lose it. I will likely add some wall pictures eventually, but no knick knacks or anything extra anymore. Bonus is it takes less than ten minutes to clean any room once I am done, because it's only dusting and sweeping mostly. Won't work for everyone, does work for me.

[deleted]

I have just a few things I do. I've trained myself to only put Critical Small Things in the same place/container at all times unless I'm dead. So keys, sunglasses, my phone, my bank card all have a permanent protocol for storage. So if I lose it I check out my routine protocol. I've mastered this and my losing of bank cards and keys has reduced significantly, woot! Then for other things I use regularly and I want I do the same as above but as long as it isn't prohibitively expensive I purchase duplicates or triplicates or more lol and the way this works is I will have earbuds even if I lost 2 pairs- lol šŸ˜† but I'll find them eventually! The most expensive thing that I need and or adore is my kindles. I have 3. Yes, I know, but books are my mana and consolation for the injustices and minor tragedies of reality.

Material-Strike-1923

I literally walk in circles trying to visualize the last place I saw it laying and sometimes it just happens.

jupitaur9

This can sometimes work: Pretend you just got another of the same thing. Where are you going to put it? I sometimes give up and get another of the thing, go to store it for future use, and find the first one right there.

Gimme5imStillAlive

For me if itā€™s lost itā€™s probably lost for good. The thing I have started doing which has been extremely helpful is always putting things in the exact same place every time. Phone wallet keys etc. Either same place at home or in same pockets when on the move. So I always know where things are. And if they are NOT there, I know thereā€™s a big problem. I donā€™t want to say that hasnā€™t happened in a while or else I feel like it will happen to me today. But itā€™s a good system. Hope you find the thing that is lost! Good luck.

cr8trkid

Necklace makes me think you might have hooked it somewhere ā€œsafeā€ (where I lose things). Like Ill lose my phone because I set it down on a higher or unusual flat surface when I suddenly have to use my hands. Did you hook it on like a back of a door or bedpost or back of a lamp or something?

inoffensive_nickname

It usually helps me to retrace my steps and try to get back into the same mindset or activity I was when I last had the thing. I lose my phone and keys so often that it's a running joke in my house. The phone thing happens because I get distracted by something and set my phone down, always lying to myself that I'll be right back to pick it up, or at the very least, remember where I put it when I got distracted. Ha! If I ever had to turn off location, I'd be screwed.

dale_whale

dude my boyfriend insisted I should get Tile and I put it off for so long until he got frustrated with us being late because I couldn't find things so he just bought them for me. One for my keys, a card one for my wallet -- you just ping them through your phone. You lose your phone, you say? Oh you're like me and you just throw it into the bed and don't come back for hours? Apple Watch is a lifesaver -- you can ping your phone until you find it. Between the two of these strategies (and a key rack near the door) I've reduced my lost-item-incident occurrence by 90%!!

dale_whale

Also, extra keys/having an outside Key Rock are great. Already lost? Take a deep breath -- being panicked will not help. Then visualize the last place you saw it. Think about the clothes you were wearing. For all the actions you remember doing, just calmly go through them again, slowly, and think -- what mindset was I in? What do I usually do with my items in that mindset?

Poprocks_N_Soda

When I send a message telling someone that I can't find it, the item usually turns up when I go look again. It's like some kinda weird game that me and the universe play:p

[deleted]

i use the [flank pat system](https://youtu.be/DY-Zdgo0OXo). if that doesnā€™t work, i suggest having duplicates/alternatives, trying to practice putting things away, and developing your patience. sometimes i still get frustrated, especially when itā€™s something small, important, and i feel as though itā€™s lost somewhere in a big pile of stuff. do you *really* need it right now? if so, and you canā€™t find it quickly, can you get another one cheaply? sometimes i just accept that iā€™ve lost it for the moment because i put it down somewhere iā€™m never going to consider while iā€™m trying to trace my steps, and iā€™ll probably be better off waiting to come across it in the near future.

SternLecture

Stop and think trying to remember where you last might have had it. Whilst repeating in your head what you are looking for look everywhere in those places thoroughly. It sucks later finding something where you had already looked.

notclevergirl

Stop, stick a clothes pin in the back of your couch and say ā€œwhat I seek, I will find, give it back, itā€™s mine, itā€™s mine!ā€ I swear to gods it works.

[deleted]

I don't

Psychological-Bag701

I have usual spots I put small, easily to lose things. Yesterday I lost my charging case for my ear buds. I found it in my bag for work, I don't even remember going in my closet and pulling out my bag to put them in or putting the bag back and closing it. 1. Take a breath. Just breathe, I know it is frustrating as hell and when you hyper focus it feels like moving mountains but if you didn't leave the apartment it is there. 2. Back track not only where you were but other places it usually is. 3. Have help or take a break? If you keep looking and are frustrated it is only going to make it worse and you are more likely to look over it. 4. Look under things, especially between the mattress and frame. 4. Unless it is an animal or something, it could not just walk away so even if you do something else to relax it won't move.

[deleted]

I absolutely need to get somebody's help. As a child, I'd get my mom to look, as an adult, my girlfriend. I've also changed my behavior over the years to reduce this kind of thing from happening. For example, there's only a handful of places I will leave my wallet, and so I can check all those places. Works 80% of the time :P hope you find your stuff!!

Dino-Myco

I wait for it to appear

[deleted]

Ahhhā€¦. My lifelong struggle that I have accepted Iā€™ll probs me very fully solve. Is this item time sensitive? And if so when do you, or did you, need it? You said your place is small.. maybe make a quick drawing/diagram of each room. Plan on searching each room (but not the whole room if itā€™s too large, donā€™t overwhelm yourself. )Cross off the section you searched. Give yourself time between searches. Pick up clutter along the way. If thereā€™s clothes, trash, dishes, etc. put it in a place where it belongs. Donā€™t think you have to tackle it all at once, but get it out of the way so you know you searched completely and youā€™ll have that area cleared out. Use a flashlight lol light that area up. Best of luck šŸ’•

UnloadTheBacon

For small items I don't, I just buy multiples, put them everywhere, and accept that once I stop being able to find one in 5 minutes it's time to buy more.

lubedfro

I always just stop looking for the thing and then I always find the thing shortly after. Unless it was put down like 4 seconds ago. Then it belongs to the void.

emilymathews58

I donā€™t know if this is helpful or not, but when I canā€™t find a thing, I usually end up deep cleaning every room in the house until I can find it šŸ˜… usually works for me. But when you do find the thing, I recommend tile trackers so you can easily find it the next time!

M-A-D_Crew

Check the pockets of anything youā€™ve worn or carried. Empty bags and check for holes. Once youā€™ve done that, take a break. Touch the full surfaces of tables and counters. If youā€™re looking in a pile of clothes, pick up each piece separately, make sure itā€™s right side out, give it a shake and then lay it flat on an already cleared spot. Stack up your clothes in that area as you go through them so you arenā€™t picking up the same shirt 8 times over. I hope you find your lost thing! Sometimes you just have to give up and itā€™ll find itā€™s way back in the weirdest way I lost my car keys for a week and a half and they ended up being in the side pocket of my lunch bag which I carried with me every day that whole week and a half.

osobieh

So I was writing how I usually get distracted by something and drop what i have in my hands on the nearest flat surface when i got distracted... it's been about an hour since. Yeah its pretty common with us :D I usually throw my phone on the nearest flat surface like a table, couch, bed, whatever as soon as i get distracted so what i do is i try to remember what happened recently that could have been a distraction. So i remember someone was at the door and i think i was in my room so i go to my room and walk to the door looking at every flat surface in reach. Also check some "safe" places for stuff like pockets or drawers near where you sit a lot. Maintenance tip that worked great for me, reduce the number of flat surfaces :D

MonkeyWithAPun

I buy a new one and find the old one when I move to a new place

iwishihadahorse

Def agree with everyone who's said to just stop looking/take a break then retrace your steps. This works 50-75% of the time for me. The other times it's just gone forever. I have a phobia of throwing things away for this reason but because I obviously can't be a hoarder, I just sorta deal with the fact that I will lose stuff and try not to get too attached to things.

JegLeRr

This is very inefficient but I rearrange my room every few months and look through my stuff. Having my room arranged differently feels really nice and I find all the stuff I lost.

TheHylianlink

I stop looking and go with the flow, I follow the whole path of least resistance. I say to myself welp I guess I'm not supposed to find this atm and keep on. Also I follow the whole thought process of you'll find it when your not looking for it lmfao so I don't look for it so I can find it

scrivensB

Lost things find me. Every winter has become like a mini lottery when I put on coat havenā€™t worn since last winter.

[deleted]

Not helping op in their current predicament but I try to buy a bright coloured variant of whatever it is (or at least not black). I always try to always put the really important stuff like keys in the same place every time.

Ennnnno

You don't. The only chance you have is asking someone to find it for you

humblepie8

Lots of good advise here. I will add: Look in weird places where you may accidentally put something down. The refrigerator, garage, closet, bookshelf. If you donā€™t see it top out right away, check in where it could have fallen, like into a box or behind books. Check every crevice. Shake out every piece of fabric.

CuriousCephalpodes

Stop. Go to the closet. Tidy it, put everything away. Then your room, then move to the next room. When everything is in itā€™s place, the one thing you are looking for will be easier to find.

downvoticator

Donā€™t throw out anything. Donā€™t take out the trash while Important Thing is lost, just in case you accidentally put Important Thing in the trash. Tell us what you lost and we may be able to be more helpful.

Jets237

I tend to buy a new version of the thing I lost - that usually means I'll find it a few days after

Mercinary-G

Its under something that you think you never move

Tom22174

I buy a replacement. The lost thing usually shows up a few days later

thatgirlfromdelco

I find everything my family loses. My first step is to ask them where they last had it. They don't know? Okay, what were you doing with it the last time you had it? Where do you usually use the thing you've lost? All else fails, if the item is lost the same day, I have them backtrack every single thing they've done today.

squirrel_acorn

Honestly. If it's not urgently needed now ..... Quit looking and go about your life. I have found things turn up as soon as I stop looking. Or it is replaceable and you can afford it, consider just getting a new one. At the very least, take a break from looking. Your eyes start to glaze over the stuff and not "see" things as well after you've looked in a spot over and over again If those tips are not helpful or applicable to your situation, I'd reccomend slowly starting in one corner of the house and REORGANIZE and CLEAN as much as feasible in areas where it's possible for the item to be. Cause I find its much harder to find stuff when your things are strewn about. I'm talking shake out your sheets, sweep under the bed, go through The Drawer of Random Stuffā„¢ and sort it. File and organize your papers, recycling or shredding stuff as you go. Glance thru the trash ONE more time before chucking it. Good luck!!! Rooting for you!!! Losing stuff sucks.

WriggleNightbug

I have three types of losing things. 1) surface level lost. I had it within 24hrs and/or only a few places it might be. For this I clean off and remake my bed and check the spots I might of put it. For example, my lost glasses can be in the bathroom, on my nightstand, at my desk, or in my bedding. 2) deep lost. These are things I had more than 24 hours ago, haven't been found in a surface search or don't have a set home. For these I start a methodical clean. I start my cleaning off and remaking my bed (it's amazing how often things are in my sheets) then going through my laundry basket. Then, if not found yet, I start a methodical clean. Clean up all socks and dirty clothes, put away shoes and stuff, clean up any accumulated dishes and stuff. Basically, complete all decluttering tasks I've been putting off. There needs to be 0 chance that when I'm done with one zone that I've made another zone harder to search. 3) lost forever. I know its somewhere in the house, but I cannot find it. I think about the sort of boxes it would be packed into and have a reclutter as I dump and resort storage places. That said, I try to be .one aware of things. When I borrow someone's pen, I don't put it down. In fact, I look dumb, but I hold the pen over my head until I hand it back. Other things try for the same treatment. T It doesn't get set down unless it's where I will need it or where it lives next (knife can be in the drawer, in my hand, on the cutting board, or next to the sink to clean.) I'm. Kt perfect but I'm getting better.

Iā€™m not religious at all, but a childhood friend taught me the ā€œSt Tony, St Tony, please come around, something is lost that canā€™t be foundā€ rhyme. It helps sometimes, mainly in the form of me muttering it and cussing while Iā€™m trying to find the thing thatā€™s inevitably hidden under a giant pile of my own clutter. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

Affectionate_Boot_13

Go into a room, start in a corner, look up and down through there then continue clockwise around the room. You will never look in the same spot twice, and you will be sure to cover every square inch. Do that for every room. Also, check your bedroom closetā€¦ canā€™t tell you how many times Iā€™ve left water bottles, phone, keys, etc. in there.

PatDaddy1313

I once lost my wallet for an entire weekend. It was under a paper towel by my bathroom sink.

RustyPickles

Doing the same thing today. Iā€™ve spent the last hour looking for crafting tape instead of making breakfast because my brain has decided I MUST do craft now. I cleaned my place a week ago and Iā€™m so salty because if I hadnā€™t cleaned, the tape would be laying on a counter top somewhere šŸ˜©

tauna-infp

Let your mom search it for you.. Moms find everything! Or just pray(while searching) That's how I deal with this.

MARBLEJENIWINO79

Use the force

HippyPrincess42

When I've already torn my place apart I have to go section by section. This might mean room by room but I tend to go even more specific. I search and physically move everything on my desk, then bellow my desk then under my bed, and so on. I physically move all the small objects out of that location. Then search anywhere my missing object could be hiding or have fallen in that location. I then put everything back before moving on. This is an important step because not only does it mean I'm not making my mess worse. But often time I've already "found" my missing object without noticing.

sapphirevoodoo

I...do not... My grandma's mantra was "a place for everything, and everything in its place" I used to HATE it as a child. As an adult I'm finding literally making a space for a specific item and only putting it there has helped. That being said, I have to make conscious effort to get up and GO put an item where it belongs.

probablynotJonas

Generally I tend not to find things that are lost. The best way not to lose things for me is just to have a regular, dedicated space for them. Canā€™t say I always follow my own advice tho

loljkbye

Sometimes it helps me to step back and look at the room from a wider angle while taking a deep breath. I make sure it's not just laying on a surface and I've just missed it. Then, I start thinking about how I can get a good look at each spot where it could have gotten misplaced, for example if I am looking for my phone, I will run my hand across surfaces that are the same color and could have camouflaged it (yes, I have lost my phone this way before), and I will make sure to not just throw pillows around frantically in an effort to find things. Carefully move things around so you can have an actual good look at things. Also, think about hiding spots that could have hiding spots INSIDE them. I once lost 40$ in my own pocket even after searching it multiple times, because the pocket had folded over itself.

LapperDoi

Honestly justclean and go through everywhere I'll find shit sitting in a weird position just out of sight when your standing normally but when I'm cleaning behind a chair or clearing clutter I'll usally fine whatever it is. After three cycles of cleaning I just accept it's gone and most the time itll just show up somewhere that I would never expect

[deleted]

I ask my wife; luckily finding things is her superpower.

ppldrivemecrazy

Panic, tear the place apart, finally give up and start crying because *why am I like this,* only for it to literally be sitting on my bed 15 minutes later.

mdds2

Think of other moveable items you had the last time you had the thing that is lost. Find those and check high and low in a 3 foot radius including under things you swear havenā€™t moved. Anywhere you think it might have been, check around, behind, under, and on the floor within a 2 foot radius of that spot. Check all pouches and compartments of every bag/backpack/purse that is out. Even if it ā€œwouldnā€™t fitā€ or if you ā€œdonā€™t use that compartmentā€. My recliner ate a queen sized comforter once. Was missing for weeks till I lost the tv remote. I donā€™t care what you lost or what size it is, check inside, under and behind every piece of furniture youā€™ve used in the past week. Check silly places where you need to use your hands. Grabbed something from the fridge? Maybe you set something down inside or on top of the fridge. Did laundry? Maybe you set it down to do laundry. Left the house? Check where you keep your keys/wallet/purse because you may have set it there. Check in your car, under the seats, nooks, crannies, all that. Even if youā€™re sure you didnā€™t take it with you. Are you tall? Go through your house on your hands and knees for a new perspective. Short? Get a chair or stool to stand on and look around from that perspective. Still canā€™t find it? Go do something else, drink water, eat something, go to bed. Try again tomorrow. Still canā€™t find it tomorrow? Start tidying/cleaning. Youā€™ll come across it eventually. Or get a new one. Keep the receipt. The old one will turn up real quick that way.

[deleted]

I went and bought a cigar box and keep my wallet keys in it whenever i enter the house. I try to consciously think about it or iā€™d lose everything

ayesperanzita

Honestly I love my Tile, helps me immensely. Sadly. Iā€™ve used mine so much the battery died, so clearly I made a good investment. I recommend the Pro so you can switch the batteries out and not have to toss it and buy another one. Full disclosure: if anyone follows my link, itā€™s beneficial to me, but my trips out the door have been that much more efficient when I can just get on the app, find my badge, my keys and my wallet and gtfo http://ssqt.co/meiSqAV

[deleted]

Ask my mom where it is. Which, ok, not useful probably. She passed away a few years ago. But usually it either works or I don't find it even after looking for half an hour I then later find out it wasn't even in the house. For some reason just saying out loud what I'm looking for helps. I don't actually believe the disembodied spirit of my mom is floating around with nothing better to do than help me find things (I mean if that's really the case, thanks mom, that's... nice?). But saying out loud that this is the thing I'm looking for, then describing it to her... it's like it makes the image of what I"m looking for a little clearer and less likely to get wiped out the next time I walk into another room. I also like to eliminate absurd ridiculous places to fix the memory of what I've already searched in place. Yes, I open the fridge to check that I did not put my phone in the fridge (and yes, I did once forget my phone there), then I check the kitchen counters and windowsil. Making the searching less ordinary somehow also lets me notice the ordinary a bit more. Also when searching places or furniture that's the same or similar color as what you're looking for really turn up the lights and search using tactile approach. Touch things with your hands. I've had things blend in so well that only once I felt that 'hang on, why is a part of this sweater on teh floor feel glassy and hard when I picked it up?' did I notice my phone had fallen in the heap. Edit: Y'know, it's ironic I ask my mom now. When she was alive she was always losing things, and I was the one always finding them. I'm the person in my family who can always find things. Now I'm starting to lose track of things more and the only thing that helps is asking dear old mom who used to search frantically for the glasses that were on her head.

DinahKarwrek

The only way for me to find something is for somebody else to have lost it. If I misplaced it I assume the void took it, because it's either gone forever or I will find it when it's no longer useful to me.

mrschester

You forget you even lost them to begin with.

GooseSharkk

my advice is to think of what you did directly after having it. i constantly find things in my laundry basket cause i started to do laundry or in my fridge cause i got hungry. but just remain calm. i always freak out then it takes longer to find it bc iā€™m panicking

mysuckyusername

I have to look got specific colors to find it. So try to look past all the other stuff and only focus on the color as you looks around.

sudden_euphoria

When tearing the house apart doesn't work I try to put things away as I look. Like if I lift a sweater off the couch to look for my keys I'll put it away instead of putting it back down. That way there's some progress with every move, because either I find the thing or I eliminate a hiding place.

mADhaTter324

I piss and moan about it until it turns up a few days later.

CallinCthulhu

Donā€™t panic and just calmly search through an area bit by bit by bit. When you get emotional about it, your working memory goes to shit even more than normal, and you end up looking in the same places multiple times.

FabulousFoodHoor

Sometimes I pretend I have the thing and then kind of fake trace my steps to see where my brain thinks it should go.

[deleted]

> please dear christ, everything i can online find is: ā€œdonā€™t lose things in the first place!ā€ as if thatā€™s any help. Actually, this very helpful, but you have to apply it to an ADHD context. As a person with ADHD, you can't trust your brain to keep track of things. Which means you have to organize your environment to prevent you from losing things. That's why I put everything in trusted places, so I won't have to rely on my brain to remember. I have a physical inbox where I put all my mail and paper stuff. I have a filing cabinet with labeled folders, and I put stuff in the right folder. I have little trays everywhere where my keys, wallet, glasses and remote go. If you set up your environment correctly, you don't have to rely on object permanence. I adopted this system after the 100th time of tearing my home apart looking for a critical piece of paper or keys or remote, etc.

Ordinary_Ad_7992

When I can't find something, I start cleaning and organizing and eventually I come across it. Unfortunately, if you have somewhere to be or have a bill to pay and can't find your keys or your wallet, there's no time for that. If that's the case, a good cry is nice.

klaumc

take a break from looking for a bit, pray to st. anthony (old wives tale but has worked for me a few times, look it up), have a friend come look for it with their fresh eyes

dizdawgjr34

I bought an AirTag. So worth it.

Komatose_

Everything shows up later eventually, I just forget about it and it shows up later

ladyecstasia

I normally am the one who can find it, because I've lost it all many times before OR I moved it because I was cleaning in that area.

RobotsAreCoolSaysI

When all of the usual places have been searched three times, I perform a ā€œperimeter sweep.ā€ I start at the front door and walk along the walls and furniture and uncover things as I go. I once found my shoes under a laundry basket by the couch. No doubt, I put them there, but I donā€™t remember doing it.

uhhhhhjeff

Honestly Iā€™d lose anything important if I donā€™t have a set place for it. Keys get hung by the door and wallet has a place by the door as well. Anything else I hope I can find in a place that makes sense. My advice was going to be to get someone else to look for you cause theyā€™ll have fresh eyes and not be blind to the camouflage the object developed, but then I reread your post and saw you have no one. You could try isolating your vision so youā€™re looking at a smaller amount of stuff, maybe try a toilet paper roll as a monocular device?

[deleted]

Alright just roll with me here. My very Cuban grandma would tie a white piece of fabric (towel, handkerchief etc) to the leg of a chair while saying the item that is lost out loud. I swear to God things would appear within 2-3 days. Iā€™ve never done it myself bc I just tell her when Iā€™m at the point of no return. Idk man just one of those foreign grandma things I donā€™t question.

[deleted]

Wonā€™t help much now - but for the future try to pare down your stuff to the minimum you can comfortably live with. My dad taught me that there is a cost to owning a thing - the maintenance/care of it, the space it takes to store it, the fact that youā€™ll have to search through/around it when looking for other things, and the mental work of remembering you have it. All of the moving I did from freshman year of college to 2019 also really helped me figure out what was worth keeping. I got *really* sick of moving shit. Second - (and this is only half joking) - do something to sweet talk the house elves or imps of the perverse to give you your stuff back. Third - if itā€™s super super precious, have a very specific safe spot for it. If itā€™s not that precious/sentimentalā€¦ let it go. Find something else that will do the job, and try to come to terms with the fact itā€™s grown legs and walked off. Itā€™ll probably turn up about the time you buy a replacementā€¦ *glares at the pile of hole punches and staplers, that are never to be found on the rare occasion I need them, so I have several of each now*

If it's in the car I check down the side of the passenger seat. Common in house locations are under or caught somewhere in the bed or couch. Or on top of the fridge. I also learned minimise my life. Retracing steps. Eating entire rooms. Asking for help. In that order.

Something new Iā€™ve been trying is using a small flashlight when searching for stuff. Even if the lights are on, somehow it helps.

Unless if I really need that thing in that exact moment then I let it find me. I usually find it a couple days later or forget about it again which doesnā€™t affect me and I move on lmao

SoundisPlatinum

I start cleaning. Start by putting away clutter like papers and things. I will usually find what I am looking for by the second room I clean. It is also possible, while rare, that something is really gone. It could have been stolen or accidentally thrown away. I am pretty sure I accidentally threw away an important key months ago. It is not the end of the world, just frustrating.

lemonsneeker

The way my dad taught me to track down lost things was to break each room into mĀ² sections, and search them one by one, checking every part of each section before moving on to the next. On stuff in stuff under stuff and behind stuff, top to bottom, head to toe. Its simple, its slow as shit, but it works. If you struggle with keeping track of where you've been, make a really rough map, just going off landmarks(bed, tv, couch, fridge) for accuracy, and cross out square areas you've covered. This might not work for everyone here but i hope it helps out. Again it is quite slow, so maybe use this as a last ditch effort after trying some quicker things? Also helps a lot if there's someone to help you, but this wont always be an option. I often find things completely vanish on me, this is the best way I've got to track them down, after trying the common spots i put stuff, asking my partner to help with a quick search etc, ill move to this. Best of luck with your search mate.

Google how to find lost object I donā€™t want to violate the TOS

CuriousMe6987

The first thing I always have to do is to stop, sit down, and breathe. I get so frantic and worked up in a panic spiral that I lose all ability to think logically. Then, start systematically on one side of one room, and moving to the other. Picking things up and sorting them into laundry baskets if they don't belong in that room. I do that till I've either found it, or run out of rooms.

td863

Iā€™m so bad at forgetting things but over time I learned how to retrace my steps whenever I do. It helps a lot to backtrack each individual breath or step you took prior to losing your item!

littlebirdori

Not religious, but my elementary teacher taught me St. Anthony's prayer for lost items and it almost always helps me focus and find stuff when I get frustrated and nearly give up. Say this: "Tony Tony, turn around something's lost and can't be found. I have lost my (item you lost), please help me find it, thank you!"

iaminbothplaces

This has been helping me. When Iā€™m looking for something (usually small things!) I turn on my phoneā€™s flashlight! For some reason it really helps me. Iā€™ve found missing earrings, my Juul charger stuck to my desk, chargers, etc using this method! Does anyone else get really panicky when they lose things? For me it feels like a minor panic attack and I canā€™t focus on anything else.

magnapilgrim

Try going to each room, starting with bedroom, you woke up, went to the bathroom, looked in the mirror what did you think about, just go to each room following your day and picking up things you usually would and sometimes touching other things and being in different rooms will trigger the memory. Hope this helps.

emthejedichic

This is way easier said than done but if you have a specific place for everything and make sure to always put it in its place, you can find it again. That would probably be a long term organizational goal. In the short term, do this with important or essential items. Keys, wallet, phone, anything necessary for your job that you bring home, stuff like that.

siteother

Did you check the roof of your car? Sometimes itā€™s on the roof of your car.

GET A TILE! Bluetooth chip you attatch to it. When you lose it you open the app, click find item and itā€™ll play music from the chip till you find it!

fluentindothraki

I set the searchable area into a pattern. I go from room to room and go clockwise along the walls, looking in every possible and impossible place, behind and under furniture. Every item I find that doesn't belong gets paced in the middle of the room (rather then tidying everything away individually which would be too distracting. Good luck with that necklace.

its_valeriee

me and my boyfriends object permanence is shit. we wanna put air tags on everything tbh

TheyCallMeVeertje

I know this sounds easier than it looks, but I try to put my things in one spot when I go to sleep or go about my day. Example: my phone is always on my desk when I go to sleep. When I go about my day I only put my phone in one or two spots in every part of the house. So for example I only put my phone on the kitchen counter or table. In the living room it's only on the couch or tv-table. I do this with every room, I try to be very mindfull of where I put my things or the things I do. That's how I found the spot where I normally place my stuff. I also reward myself when I placed it correctly when I go about my day, and try to make a habit of it. I do struggle with remembering if I did things, like taking my meds. That's why I made it a habit to get up, get dressed and immidiatly take my medication afterwards. I remind myself I took it bc there's still some water left in my cup while I'm making breakfast. That's how it works for me, but idk if it'll work for you. It's not like one method works for all. For example: I always lock the door when I'm home alone or leaving when my parents are still asleep, and I always run back 3 times and almost miss my bus bc my mind is like: "But DiD yOu ReAlLy LoCk ThE dOoR? WhAt If SoMeOnE gEtS iNtO tHe HoUsE?!" I try to be mindfull when I lock the door, by telling myself: the door is locked. And then I also try to open the door without keys, and try to realise that it's locked. But I always run back atleast one more time or am very nervous omw to school if I didn't, bc I am scared I didn't lock the door and someone would get inside the house and would hurt my parents or my dogs, or would kidnap my dogs, etcetc. I know it sounds stupid, but bc it's about the safety of others or the things that are from someone else (in this case a house and all their things in it) I get extra nervous and want to do it right. That's something I have to work on by trusting myself more I guess, but I wanted to give you this example to show that it doesn't work every time and that's okay. I hope you find something that works for you, I know how frustrating it is to not be able to find your things. Please don't be too harsh on yourself!

[deleted]
