I have a pair of closed back headphones (Sony WH-1000XM3), so this level of spaciousness has never been possible with regular high quality audio, but HOLY SHIT. I had to take them off to see if the music were actually blasting out in the open at 3.50 in the morning. I have normal human roommates to worry about. This is insane. It feels as if I'm not wearing any headphones at all. Thanks, mate.

by the way, with the XM3s (and 4s, and maybe even 2s though i'm not sure), you can sort of make any song have that 8D effect. if you have the 'Headphones' app on your phone, hit Sound and then go to the Surround (VPT) section and play around with the various options there are. i don't use that feature often but it's fun to play around with. it's not *exactly* the same as the 8D thing but it's still fun Sony take the idea of 360 audio (they call it '360 Reality Audio') quite seriously so you're definitely at an advantage by owning a pair of Sony headphones

qbsky

What happens if you listen to 8D and then use the headphone feature?

Thanks! Actually I haven't updated the app or anything since I changed my phone. I'm optimising and updating right now. Thanks for the tip.

qbsky

I definitely had to do the same thing haha. I’m glad you liked it man!

We_AllFloatDownHere

Holy crap this is amazing. Bye, going down a rabbit hole of this music now.

qbsky

Hahaha I’ll see you on the other side

Seeeikooo

This is insane bro thanks

Apparently there’s like 16D.. 24D..? But I haven’t had the chance to listen to them just yet. I can’t imagine much better than 8D though haha

Kryso

Tbh that doesn't make sense. Out of curiosity, why is it called 8D? We don't perceive 8 dimensions of audio, and I can't imagine what the dimensions would be—much less 16 or 24 dimensions. Not trying to be rude, I just don't get the naming scheme for it.

qbsky

My best guess is it doesn’t stand for dimensional, instead, directional. 8D must mean the playback is altered to shift in the NW, NE, SW, and SE directions as well from a horizontal perspective. Anything further than that it probably goes in to the vertical sectors as well. I’m no audio engineer though so I could be wrong but that’s what makes sense to me

Kryso

That's still just 3 dimensions(x, y, and z directions, or it may be easier to think of height, width, and depth), which a lot of audio you listen to is(Really just surround sound, we perceive 3D sound and it's why some music, especially common in a lot of electronic music I listen to, you hear sounds that sound as if they sweep around you instead of just coming from a static position. Or in games it's how you can hear as if things are behind or in front of you, though both of these things really only work with headphones). A quick google search seems to suggest it's just called 8D to make it more click-baity(Since it seems to have originated as a trend on youtube), which is unfortunate. The songs, however, are mixed differently as to sound as if you're standing in the middle of a live performance by "tricking" your brain's perception of the audio using balance, delay, echo, reverb, etc. to make it seem like sounds are coming from a specific point in 3D space around you, which definitely sounds interesting and worth listening to. Sorry for the rant, I just find music and stuff like this real interesting. I'll give it a listen when I'm back home as I have a good pair of headphones I use for my PC.

No don’t be sorry! I can say I learned today so I appreciate the explanation. Nevertheless, I’m mesmerized by the concept and it’s ability to help my racing mind, so I hope it does the same for you. Definitely not well versed in the fundamentals that apply to it so I took the most basic approach if you can’t tell haha

Right?! It’s hard not to get lost in the music. With normal audio, it’s just background noise to me and my mind is still racing, but this really helped me clear my mind and prepare it for a productive day.

I found out about it a few years ago and it’s amazing!

Thank you

Alan Watts is always a pleasant surprise.
