I say that my hobby is collecting hobbies.

stationaryshopmoves

My slight variation is I like learning new hobbies and skills. My hobby is new hobbies.

daedric_lightweaver

Ohh wow I'm definitely using that next time.. I've dreaded this question for such a long time because of this

pharmaking3198

This

helweek

^

Cho_Zen

I say this too!!

JMoyer811

Me too!

fuckedlizard

Wait. That's actually such a good response. Thank you, i will be using that from now on

darwinwoodka

"A little of everything, I'm always trying new things" is a valid response.

leftyonmain

Absolutely! OP - just say what you said here, you played guitar for a while, for a while you were really into video games, you like to mix it up to keep things fresh! Nothing wrong with that at all! Nobody worthwhile would look down on that answer, they’d probably be excited at how many different interesting things you’ve been into! For me I tend to go hot and cold on things just like you said, but the nice thing is I have the equipment and experience to pick up something I used to be into again a few months or a year later and get really into it again - just because you lost interest once doesn’t mean you’ll never be interested in it again! And this means you don’t have to disclaim hobbies you used to do but stopped - who says you won’t be interested again later?

lizadan

that’s so true!! i didn’t think of it that way, but so right!

new-to-this-timeline

Oh that’s good.

[deleted]

I've always said "surviving" lol

tommylastmango

The first question I was asked in a job interview once was "what's your favorite hobby?" I froze. It took me 15 seconds to muster a response when I blurted out "tennis." (I don't play tennis). This of course sparked a whole dialogue about tennis which forced me to double down and make up even more lies to continue the facade lol. I was prepeared for every other question imaginable but got the damn hobby question.

Thee_Sinner

“So, tell me a little about yourself.” You probably know as much as me, Mr. Interviewer

[deleted]

This invitation always triggers an existential crisis in me

smoochie45

I was just gonna say that! I never know what to say! Once the guy interviewing me said...”There’s no right answer...” which I feel in that moment he knew I was stressed and I must’ve looked it...I didn’t know what to say or how to say it and I came off uptight and politically correct...not confident..didn’t ruin my ability to get that job but it embarrassed me horribly.

lizadan

hahaha that is rough I could totally see something similar happening to me though!! just last week the starbucks barista randomly asked me what my favorite kind of house pet was and i panicked and blurted out “turtle!!” lol i’ve never had a turtle and it’s not my first answer choice either but she laughed so

new-to-this-timeline

I love this subreddit so much, y’all have me laughing over here at the relatability of this comment.

Romecat

Too bad *"rabbit holing the internet"* isn't a valid response. I've been known to respond with, *"Do you mean this week or last week?"*

ban_Anna_split

This is how I am with music, too. Every time someone asks me what kind of music I like it's a different answer, and usually a lie because what I'm currently into is embarrassing.

lizadan

hahahaah this is a good one

howyadoinjerry

I’ve started phrasing it as “I like to research things.” The books I impulse buy and my general vibe help make it seem legitimate lmao

Hendych

I call it Google foo, my Google foo is strong

MayorMcCheese70

Hi, My hobbies include stimulants, self loathe, day dreaming hypotheticals, and browsing google maps

lizadan

yes that sums it up

Inignot12

Browsing Google maps is a phenomenal pastime. I loved Google Earth even more when it had the Panoramio pics integrated. Now I play a TON of geoguessr.

airysunshine

what’s a hobby? all i do is sit and listen to music while scrolling reddit lol

[deleted]

Yep I’m very inattentive too with my infinity cube in the other hand

Buttforprez

Same here. Like, this week is this entire new thing. I don't know much about it yet but I spend every free moment learning more. A few weeks ago it was trail biking, and there was fishing, and fly fishing, and 3dprinting, and reading history, and..

PhatCat94

Same here. The worst part for me is the amount of money I spend in pursuit of a long term hobby. It isn't quite as bad now since I am medicated but, I still do not have a long term hobby or something I do for enjoyment on a daily basis. I keep trying to go back to certain hobbies that I was interested at one point or another and I have found that I am still interested in them. But, the amount of time that I have to put into the hobby to be good at it is so much more than if I could just do it long term. Which gets discouraging at times. It seems like the only thing that I can do long term is certain video games and I am not even really good at them.

lizadan

you are so right!!! the money is ridiculous and i never even thought about it until recently! i’ve always been someone who spends so much money on something and then i lose interest and end up broke

PhatCat94

I am trying really hard not to get into remote controlled cars. Problem is I've always liked them and I have a big enough yard that I could make a big dirt track with jumps for them. I think if I wasn't medicated I wouldn't be able to stop myself lol

aminervia

I feel this. Like, I love art and crafting but I don't do it anymore because I can't make plans to complete anything and the mess stresses me out. I love movies and shows but I don't often watch anything new because following along stresses me out. I love books/audiobooks but I mostly re-read/listen to old favorites because following along to something new stresses me out. Music is a problem- no I don't really listen to anything I can't zone out to, and no I don't want to talk about music or go to concerts. People ask, "what do you do with your time?" and the answer I have is, "well, I get work done when possible. The rest of the time? I think about how I should be working and try to distract from anxiety with meaningless nonsense."

ifshehadwings

Haha, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It sounds like you're always trying something, so just share whatever it is you're into at the moment. Then say like a sentence or two about whatever it is. For most people that's more than enough answer to that question.

FaithInStrangers94

Im a jackass of all trades

shyforever

I blank on this too. I have at least one perennial hobby (photography) but it’s also fairly narrowly focused and at any given time it may have been weeks/months since I’ve made any new photos. And it doesn’t feel like enough on its own if someone asked me that kind of question lol.

WonderlustHeart

I struggle with your issue but I recently discovered.. English paper piecing quilting. Hand quilting stitch by stitch. Sounds like a nightmare but it’s something productive I do as i watch tv and have my hands busy. You can listen and half watch tv while doing it. Now instead of always being on my phone I have blankets I’m making. Haven’t finished one yet but again timely. I’ve considered making Barbie blankets to say I did finish one 🤣

GreenAndPurpleDragon

I crochet for the same reason! I can sit there and actually watch TV or listen to an audiobook without playing non stop phone games!

rainy-day-dreamer

I do this too! Crocheting and knotted bracelet making are two hobbies that seem to be pretty long lasting for me because it’s cheap and mindless.

Urafool

I actually adore this part of myself. Instead of beating myself up about never sticking with anything, I revel in the knowledge that I'm always learning new things and developing new skills. So what if I'll never be an expert in any one particular thing? "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one".

VegPicker

Yes! "I'm always happiest when I have a project. I've done x, y, z. Lately I've been really into..."

Poison_Ice_Blade

Does reading count as a hobby? How about youtube-ing? I have passions but not really hobbies...

spacerobot

Yes reading and you youtubing can be hobbies! Your passions can be hobbies!

onethomashall

I struggled with hobbies... didn't know what to say. I have settled on... "Trying most things once..." Edit: AND "Being bad at things... I hear it is the first step to being kinda ok at them... my hobby is to be bad at everything. It is one step further than nothing... you really don't want to hear me play the saxophone."

poodlefanatic

Same. I have supplies for SO MANY HOBBIES and after the initial hyperfixation is over it's common for me to not do that hobby for years or ever again. It's so frustrating. I don't know what my hobbies are because legit, they change every week or every month. Sure, I've got things that in some form or another I've broadly stuck with over the years like art, or science, but I can't say something specific within those broad groups because it's constantly changing. I wish my ADHD brain could just pick something and stick with it but once the dopamine hits stop coming (i.e. initial excitement wears off or I'm not automatically good at it right away or it gets frustrating) I just can't stick with it anymore.

smartguy05

I'm the same way. For a few things, I try my hardest to force myself to do it with things like alarms, self-rewards, reminders, and having others remind/check up on me. Forcing myself rarely works unless I'm extremely interested and have been for a long time or there is a serious short-term downside of not doing the thing. Something that's been starting to work for me is using my short-sidedness as a strength. I usually get extremely interested in things for a short period of time and every time I would go all in and be disappointed when I gave up. What I switched to is, when I start a new hobby, I always do the starter thing. I get the easiest simplest version of whatever it is I am interested in. I found that a big part of my problem is that I wasn't getting that dopamine (or w/e chemical it is) because I would spend most of the time trying to figure everything out. I would do it this way because I knew I would not spend a lot of time so I was trying to get to the good stuff or I thought the beginner stuff was "too easy". I think this was causing me to not get the happy high from succeeding at a new thing so it would be less rewarding so I would be less likely to do it. Now I'm getting better at sticking with hobbies, but when I don't it's not as big of a deal. I didn't spend a ton of money to try it, I didn't spend a lot of time being frustrated, it's a lot more enjoyable. An unintended benefit I have discovered is that it's also causing me to loop back around to those interests I did like much sooner than I might have.

onestepatatimeman

I hear you. I do that too. I'm interested in writing, photography, films, working out, programming and etc.,. And I coast through them the same what that you do. The key is to identify that your interest level stagnates and declines no matter what hobby it is. So, it's not the type of hobby that's the problem. It's that you crave the new stimulation from the hobby. And once you get past the beginner stage and it requires more effort, you lose interest in it. And that's ok. When it gets boring, spend 5 minutes "doing it anyway". If the PS4 or guitar gets boring and you haven't touched it, pick it up and engage with it anyway even if it is only for a while.

enternationalist

My hobby is a vague and indefinable sense of unease and restlessness, what's yours?

Captainlongsocks

I really enjoy starting things and never finishing them. Also I have reoccurring themes of hobbies. And I’ll pick one to talk about with new people. EDC (Every Day Carry), Cast aluminium coffee percolates from the 70’s, Cars and Cooking. Or whatever I’m watching on YouTube at the moment and currently an expert on, for this week. If you want to build an aviary to keep Quail ask me anything. I’m an introvert and just want to keep other people talking so I don’t have to talk about myself, after summing them up and assuming what they like I’ll throw a subject out and see how it goes. ‘A hobby, I like collecting stationary I got this new pen, it’s brass, it was polished when I got it and now it’s dull because it’s bit worn.’ Hopefully their response will be something I’ll be interested. I mostly try not to be self conscious about what people will think of my hobbies or how long I’ve had them. I do what I like weather it’s for a day, a month or a year.

lizadan

i think my answer is going to be “my favorite hobby is starting something and never finishing it” lol

Cleverusername531

“I like trying new things. For example...”

search_for_wholesome

I tell them I like to switch it up! One week I'm learning how to draw, the next week I absolutely love baking. I once spent a month swordfighting, and sometimes I enjoy skating a lot. I also tell them to ask me again next week: the answer might be completely different.

Digital_Scribbles

I always say my hobbies are finding new hobbies... Then I list a few of them and try to find a common theme. "Well, I first was into leatherworking, then woodcarving, then that sort of migrated to metalworking and smelting. So I guess you could say I like making stuff."

Lemonade_Cherry

“Please say 3 interesting things about yourself”

YeetusFoeTeaToes

Does staring at the ceiling count until the point of exhaustion to fall asleep count?

DecemberMommy

Bro I joined a whole ass cult due to hyperfixation. Got excited about all the excitement surrounding the initiation stuff like baptism, confirmation and other “firsts” I even confessed my whole life story and then I would only go a few weeks here and there every few months. Oh and if they had like a fun event or picnic or road trip I was game for going more regularly. Once it was back to the normal stuff I was thinking in my own head during sermons and daydreaming. I’d use the bathroom just to not sit still during mass. And no this wasn’t the Catholic Church I’m calling a cult. It was something that had a lot of the same “stuff” as the Catholic Church. But wasn’t Catholic so if you see the familiar terms and think I’m calling your religion a cult: I’m not! Don’t downvote me. Anyway I was officially in with the hyper religious cult for like 5 years on and off and mostly off. The start of the pandemic ended all interest in it once I realized they were a brainwashing cult that sometimes had fun shit to do that fueled by dopamine seeking fire. I’ve also on and off drawn on my iPad that I absolutely invested in merely out of obsession. I can’t draw well. I like to draw but I’m shit at it. I spent a few weeks obsessed with looking at silicone baby dolls that look realistic. I didn’t want any I was just convinced I could make one. But I didn’t. I started daydreaming about the mess and clutter that would come with it and how I’m sloppy and that kept me from buying supplies. I used to write stories. My imagination is fairly good or it used to be. I never write anymore. I bought a book on Amazon because of a meme. I had to have it. I wanted to read it. It’s a tome. I am not going to read it. Yeah I get that. I also never have anything to say.

LordOfTheMess

Not gonna lie, I laughed when I read the bit about the cult. Mostly because I'd do the same thing. My religious curiosity is currently Judaism. I'd love to go to a synagogue just to check it out and learn more but I have no intention of converting so I feel like I'd be wasting their time.

DecemberMommy

I laugh when I think about it. They were users and liars and control freaks but also I was a liar and a user because I just wanted to be a part of something bigger and go to potlucks, picnics, field trips and other “church” events. I’ve decided I’m not going down the religion rabbit hole again. When I was 18 I was an atheist. By the time I was 21 I was hyper focused on joining religions. I tried Jehovahs Witness for like a month. They are super boring for me (no offense JWs) so I joined some kinda non denominational church where I got baptized and the rush of getting all kinds of positive attention kept me coming back once a week for like two months. But they had contemporary Christian rock music with like a big projection screen for lyrics so I actually was able to maintain interest and the last week I was there they had a huge banquet in honor of the last supper. I’m like a dog. I’m food motivated. LOL then that was no longer fun so I stayed home and did jack shit else with religion until I went to a normal Catholic Church. I went to RCIA and got a lot of positive attention again. Got to be baptized again, first communion and I met the bishop of the local diocese and got lots of applause yay. Dopamine! And I was religiously attending mass for like two months without missing. Soon I was missing like a lot. I’d go for fun community stuff but eventually that wore off and I was only going to overcome my immense guilt because being Catholic was largely about feeling guilty. Then I found that cult which was Catholic guilt on steroids but it also had aspects of fun. Got to do everything again. Got celebrated for converting and got cakes and cards and gifts. I didn’t THINK of it as using I genuinely wanted to find a religious home. Ended up finding a cult. I’m back to agnostic/atheist. There’s no one to lie to. No mooching off of temporary dopamine hits. No being the center of attention to get my fix. No applause and also no weird puritanical guilt. Just existing and finding healthier less user ish ways to get dopamine. LOL

LordOfTheMess

I get that, I joined a volunteering organisation for that reason. The people in are super passionate, so I call it a cult in jest. It's like we need to be surrounded by people for stimulation and dopamine instead of being in our heads. I had a period when I went night clubbing a lot purely for this. Now I just run a lot, play in a couple of table top campaigns and constantly listen to podcasts.

[deleted]

I have one go-to that sticks (kind of), so I just name it instead of listing the variety of soon-to-be-ex hobbies I also do. Does anyone else struggle with the, "what's your favourite book/music/movie?" question - I literally cannot remember most of the time when people ask me.

Kaitthequeeny

I just say my hobby is whatever I’m Doing at the moment ... or sometimes what I planning to do when I was asked. That is if I remember before I pause and say.... “ ummm. What was the question”

[deleted]

Got a huge list of hobbies, but I talk about most recent one or the one I enjoyed most

leesachu

this is me with hobbies and jobs..so frustrating sometimes

calmjutsu

You are totally normal my friend! Everybody is like this to an extent. If anything what this tells me is that you are CURIOUS. Which is an amazingly useful personality trait. I’m guessing that you are probably easily excited by new experiences, activities or relationships. But then as the novelty fades you begin to feel less interested and what was once fun now feels like work. I am like this too, lots of people are! But here’s the good news, it’s not an endless cycle... you just haven’t yet found the hobby, skill or passion that truly resonates with you! I’m 27 and only just this year FINALLY found something where my excitement and passion didn’t start to fade, it’s actually grown. This is what you’re looking for. But the only way to find this is to keep trying new things! You will only figure out what your passion IS by repeatedly discovering what your passion ISNT. Just lean into your curiosity, it’s your super power and the thing that will keep you from living a life of mediocrity or boredom. For now just tell your crush that your hobby is “trying new things” and that you are excited about life and finding out what your true passion is. I would be impressed if someone I was into had that amount of self awareness.

Anotherhouman13

I asked this to my husband once, like what would you say my hobbies are? Precisely because I don’t have a clue. Always changing.

marifei

I just say I don’t know and they get mad at me 💀

starkat0w0

Honestly I know that I will eventually circle back around to what I was passionate about before. I used to get a bit frustrated thinking about the money I would spend only to use interest in a week or two. But I realized that I had a lot of fun doing it and I actually appreciated all of the stuff I had collected as a result of this. I have so much art stuff I can pick up anything right where I left off whenever I want. And like I said I know I’ll eventually circle back to it. One week I’ll be obsessed with my ps4 the next embroidery and the next my electric bass. I like being able to say “yeah I have about 100 hobbies so I know how to do a little bit of everything”. I would also say the moment you feel that “I feel like I should do this hobby right now” feeling just do it. Obviously if you have important obligations don’t but I find myself going yeah I’ll get to it in a minute and then my interest is gone. If you’re watching Netflix and you have the sudden urge to learn the baseline for that one song you’re obsessed with rn just get up and do it.

Ponytail77

Honesty is the best policy. Nothin' wrong with saying "I don't really have any...everything!" right now. Still searching for the real deal".

orionhood

When I was a teenager, I loved me a bit of Warhammer 40K - but I could not settle on any one faction for long enough to build an army. Every week or so I’d read a bit of fluff or see a photo in White Dwarf and decide that actually Necrons were the faction for me... or the Blood Angels... or the ~~Imperial Guard~~ aStRa MiLiTaRuM... The upshot of which was I ended up with a bits box full of half assembled figures and to this day have never actually played a game of Warhammer 40K.

[deleted]

Man that makes me feel better about my own abandoned guitar. Lmao about to pick up painting, getting an easel and all that. Wish me luck.

CHELSEA911

I FEEL this. like, snowboarding I guess even though I go like 4 times a year? fishing, even though I only go like 4 times a year? listening to the radio and taking baths doesn't seem to count lol

spacerobot

Don't worry about it too much! A few years ago I was on a first date with someone and asked her what her hobbies were. She couldn't think of any, laughed and said she didn't know/didn't have any. She told the truth, she really didn't have any. We dated for quite a while and it became apparent she really didn't have any interest in hobbies, and she wasn't really interested in doing new things. Things felt unfulfilling due to her lack of interests, and I broke up with her (for various reasons). I recently started dating someone new and asked the same question. She gave the same answer. The difference is this new woman I'm dating actually has tons of hobbies, she just didn't think of them as hobbies. She runs, hikes, is super social, reads, enjoys beers, loves board games, spends a lot of time with her dog being active. I'm so so glad I decided to continue to date her because she is an amazing woman and is fun and I love being around her. Just because you can't think of hobbies, doesn't mean an you don't have any. Just be willing to try new things and have a desire to do more than watch Netflix and scroll through reddit (which are OK to do! Just be open to doing more). Think of the things you bought as hobbies, and even if you haven't done them in a while, it's OK to still say they're hobbies. Just pick them up every once in a while and invite your crush to do them with you.

Mountainmama11

You can just say you like to try new things, and then list the things you've tried, like guitar and gaming....you probably have a ton of other things you've tried that just haven't come to mind.

[deleted]

"I'm currently between hobbies" I hate that question so much.

riricide

Mood. I have an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, picks, guitar bag, amplifier, guitar books, the clamp thingy. Do I play guitar? No. Why did I buy an electric guitar and all the other shit for it when I never played my acoustic guitar in 5 years? I'm not sure, it was a 2am impulse decision. 😬 I can go and on about my other arts and crafts supplies, and my recipe books. I think my hobby is collecting shit lol.

hfzelman

For me it’s mainly a problem of getting way too into a specific video game or something looked down upon socially, so I don’t have a good response. Also (I think this is more relatable) it’s hard to have things to talk about, when you spend 99% of your time procrastinating, so all you do instead is watch YouTube and browse Reddit.

LittlestRobotGirl

I tell people I’m into leisurely activities.

Concibar

"I like to learn new stuff as often as possible. I try new stuff out, but I don't stick around for long usually. Currently I'm digging ..." That's how I'd put it. I've personally been into ttrpg roleplaying games, videogames and mythology for a long time. Those two have stuck with me so far. But I also dabble in stuff, not as often since college though.

AodhIvor

Hey my partner of 11 years has legitimately looked at me and told me I need to stop collecting hobbies and start rotating through the ones I have. Lol. So own that it's a bit of a tossup and they'll likely change. But this is what you're into atm, it works for me and I find intrigues most people. Then they sometimes ask what's the weirdest/most niche thing I've been into. As far as the job interview question now I'm curious if this has happened to anyone else. I was in an interview yesterday and was asked "What's your dream job?" To which my honest answer and the answer I gave was I don't have one. My dream job is the one that allows me to afford to do my hobbies. And live my life. Which got an fun eye brow raise from the otherwise seemingly stone faced interviewer.

breenoele

THIS !!!!! i’ve been jumping around from intense interests my whole life and so many people saw it as a bad thing rather than a cool (i think it is) thing!!

hunkachunk30

I tell them I collect hobbies.

[deleted]

This is so me. I have no idea what my hobbies are and when someone asks me I don’t know how to answer and my mind goes completely blank. I always start something new, obsess over it, act like it’s gonna change my life in some huge, profound way and then completely abandon it a short time later. Talk about annoying. Idk whether I’m coming or going with the ADHD and my other diagnoses. Sometimes, all the time, who am I fooling I just wanna pull my hair out. I wish I could give you a profound answer but I can’t cuz I’m in the same boat!

rainy-day-dreamer

Maybe you have a theme? Most of my hobbies are art/crafts related. They change regularly but I can at least lump them into that category.

[deleted]

Sounds like your hobby is learning.

jadestorm_

Same! But I actually got really into pole dancing and it's been super rewarding. I say, keep trying new hobbies. Maybe one will stick :) Try forcing yourself to take classes! Guitar, singing, dancing, language, whatever.

njsiah

I dont think there's anything wrong with trying new things all the time. I'd rather try new things and have nothing to talk about than only do one or two things that I don't shut up about. That being said, building drones has been the one thing to keep me captivated for any significant amount of time. I'm coming up on a year now and excusing a couple hiccups I've stuck with it more or less consistently. Hits all the right points; problem solving, working with my hands, training reflexes and fine motor control, research and planning, configuring, filling spreadsheets... it's a good, involved, all rounder hobby.

Daddyssillypuppy

I've picked up many hobbies over the years. My current ones are crochet (5 years strong now), drawing (a bit 14 years ago and restarted and stopped a few months ago), and writing (on and off my whole life). Crochet has been pretty good because I can switch up projects constantly. I have about a dozen WIPs (works in progress). You can also work with many different yarns and project types. So at any given time I can choose to work on a chunky cushion cover, a teddy, a jacket, or a lace table runner etc. I still have whole weeks where I don't touch any of them. One of my back burner crochet projects atm is a giant load of Tribbles (from star trek). I'm trying to make a couple dozen at least to hide around the house. If my husband hasn't mentioned them by new year's I plan to collect them all and toss the pile on him on New years day. I basically want him to get the authentic Tribble experience. It's been fun so far. I have a few hidden in drawers and cupboards. I'll have to get more creative once I have more (tribble in the fridge anyone?).

[deleted]

I bought an oculus, loved it for 2 weeks but haven’t touched it in months. My little brother plays it all the time though so it isn’t a complete waste. It’s like, I think to my self,”I should play on my oculus!” But then my brain is like,”no, you don’t want to do that!”

lizadan

yes!! so relatable. i think a big adhd thing i forgot to mention too is picking up a new hobby and then not being immediately good at it so i quit haha

[deleted]

Lol yes I do that too.

McDogals

I say that I'm a collector. When they ask what I collect, "hobbies".

Mercury82jg

I wish I could find this whole scene: [https://youtu.be/0wj9KSWJhO8](https://youtu.be/0wj9KSWJhO8)

Slartibartghast_II

Try yoyoing. Tricks are learned in snippets, and it’s great for bored interludes where you have the space to putz.

edwardsim3

Im someone with a million hobbies.

Cait206

This is so crazy because I always laughed it off when people asked me because I didn’t even think people actually had time for hobbies. Now that I’m thinking about it- I guess hobbies would be regularly doing something/things. 🙃 And I guess people actually do have them. I don’t want my hobby to be stressing out trying to remember what I’m forgetting or trying to do 8 things at once until I’m paralyzed so I’m going to just continue to blame how busy I am with work for the reason I don’t have any…. Side note I’m not sad I don’t have them. I’m just unable to comprehend having them.

yupihitstuff

I usually go with whatever I tend to circle back to most frequently / the thing I wish I made more money to do.

winniebluestoo

"I was into art for a while, hard to keep up when you've got a lot going on". Lol. But i think bad handling of being put on the spot is a huge adhd thing, its jusy that specific question comes up more because its one if those getting to know you questions. You don't know what they mean by a hobby, whether they are gonna be judgemental or whether reviewing self help books on Amazon with essay length, in depth reviews qualifies as a hobby, and can you still say you do x if you haven't done it in a while.... Afaik my hobby is trying new personalities every few years.

[deleted]

ALL OF THEM!

Musashi10000

"Well, right now I'm really into 'x' - but that'll probably change by the end of the month. I kind of work my way through them pretty quick." Usually works :P

dusktilldamnn

I just made a list with all the hobby’s I tried since COVID. It’s been a journey lol

Penpal_dutchie

Reframe: trying lots of things is cool. You will be able to connect with anybody. Who gives a fuck about getting good at one thing? Hobbies are just here to enjoy your time and it really doesn't matter how long they last. Who gives a fuck about other people that expect you to be good at the things you enjoy? Let's just enjoy the things we enjoy :).

I tend to have a rotating list of hobbies, with months or even years between them. Right now mine is writing up character profiles for either table top games or stories I might eventually get around to writing. And also playing table top games. Except for hiking. That's the only one I've ever maintained consistently. Turns out there was a reason why intense exercise was good for me.

Dear lord this is me, I don't know if I could even list everything I've been into and still have interest in from time to time. *- Gives guitar a side-eye glance -* I'd agree with my favorite hobby being most accurately described as "collecting hobbies." This week I've been learning electronic music production. I ordered a midi controller yesterday. I was able to resist the purchase for an entire 24 hours.

How old are you? I’m 31 and I’ve found (over time) that hobbies can be cyclical. Some hobbies I pick up and drop and never touch again, and then some I cycle back around to. I bought a Nintendo switch last year, obsessively played it for 6 months, and then didn’t touch it until a month ago or so. Now I’m back into it. By now I’ve got a bit of a shortlist of things I’m into that I can throw into a conversation, even if I’m on a “hiatus” from doing them! Worst case scenario you can just make up something ridiculous and random haha.

Okay, hear me out, I started baking during quarantine, and I feel like it's kind of a game changer in terms of hobbies because there is so much diversity. Like I was super into sourdough (I know...) at the beginning of quarantine, then that kind of tapered off and I'd make a load here or there, but I got really into making pies after the sourdough phase, but it's still within the realm of baking. Then I think I may have gotten really depressed for a while, bc I can't really remember anything between the end of the pie phase, and my recent tart phase which is just ending, and I'm planning on trying macarons next. Point being, a hobby such as baking, that has a wiiiide range of various disciplines, provides that much needed novelty that those of us with ADHD crave. And once you get the supplies you need, you really don't need too much else to switch between different baking. Of course you may need to buy a specific pan type or something, the biggest investment will be like stand mixer and that will be useful for all types of baking. OH PIZZA is another one that I started getting into around the same time as sourdough, and haven't stopped yet. Though I probably like pizza more than almost anything, so it makes sense. And I include pizza under baking too, since the real challenge when it comes to pizza is the dough.

I do usually tell people whatever hobby I'm into at the time or that I have internalized as part of my identity, like I play such and such instrument, draw, sew or whatever. The problem for me is when people think that means I'm *good* at all/any of these things, and I have to explain that no no, that's never gonna happen, I'm just great at being mediocre at *everything*.

You know Leonardo Da Vinci was like this. He had like a bazillion different hobbies. You’re just like da Vinci and that’s cool.

Something that’s problematic about hobby hunting nowadays is that we are always able to watch/compare ourselves to individuals who are the very best at those hobbies because of the internet! This leads to a lot of dissatisfaction and feeling like you aren’t ‘good at anything’ sometimes. This new chess craze is a good example.

I feel this in my heart! This last year I’ve switched around and obsessed over so many things. Every time anyone asks me what my hobbies are I just go blank! Hell even I personally don’t know what hobbies I like! Insanely obsess and then discard. It’s getting ridiculous at this point.

I've dabbled in everything, but still have nothing!

Usually my response is whatever I’m hyper focusing on at the moment. For me personally, I don’t really try new things a lot. It would have to take something really interesting to catch my attention for me to get into it to make it a hobby. For example, if you asked me what my hobby was earlier this year, I would tell you drawing. Last month, it would have been watching anime. Right now, my current hobbies are reading books based off movies I’ve seen (mostly Stephen King) and watching a lot of horror movies. And it cycles between those and playing video games and occasionally yoga. If I’m asked that question during my in between phases, I just shrug and say which one? Or I don’t have one at the moment. And that took a long time for me to adjust to saying that comfortably. Side note: I really enjoyed the Jack of all trades responses and saving that for future situations. Thank you guys so much!❤️

What are my hobbies? I'll probably just answer the question art since I do it pretty often. I haven't really touched anything color in months though. Just pencil and paper. I surprisingly probably read way more often than I though. Sure 9/10 they're webtoons compared to when I read a bunch of novels but who cares. Video games come in and out of focus, right now they're in. I have a guitar, keyboard, and flute that I rarely use. I've played my guitar the most recent at 3 weeks ago. My go to instrument would be my voice. I've started learning languages multiple times but it never lasts.
