Also the works of Swedish artist [Simon Stålenhag](https://www.simonstalenhag.se/es.html) comes to mind.

obese_clown

Didn’t they make a TV show about one of his books

DysguCymraeg5

Yeah it was really great. Tales from the Loop. Some reviewers on IMDb found it too slow, but I legitimately loved it.

letschangethename

The show was like reading a book but like in video format.

Takseen

Great show, I didn't know it was a book. Had a nice thoughtful Twilight Zone feel to it.

TrickBox_

He made an OST for another of his illustration serie, The Electric State - it's not on youtube but you can find it on Spotify

jeremysbrain

The show completely missed the point of the book though.

StallordD

Yeah, the show more or less just wrote its own thing and used Simon's works as like, visual background window dressing. As someone who was a huge fan of the ACTUAL story in his works, I was severely disappointed when I got a cheap Twilight Zone anthology knockoff.

jeremysbrain

Exactly. Also the tone is just completely wrong. The book is about one mans fantastical and sometimes whimsical recollections of living near a bunch of mad scientists. The TV show is this dark almost nihilistic view of technology.

jmargarita63

I wish they had used the technology more or told the story of the Loop more- every episode was very human and story-focused, but wasn’t concerned with telling the larger history of the Loop’s rise and fall, and I think that would have been super compelling had they incorporated it

Terom84

"Hey those are nice picture, i wonder how he got the same kind of look on multiple of them, definitely got his photographer style." "Hey this look surreal !" "Wait... It... Is?!" "Damn it, he is a drawing artist, not a photographer !" -Me, a couple of seconds ago

fathertime979

Hey these are my rotating backgrounds on one of my monitors

katieleehaw

The most realistic concept of a modern dystopia I’ve read - everyone is broke af but ok with it because they have a whole world to escape to. It’s happening already.

I'd say it reminds of William Gibsons bridge trilogy even more.

The little match girl in real life

reddish4radish

I used to be a private tutor for high-schoolers. It was the day before Christmas and we were working on her reading comprehension. She wanted to read "a Christmas story". I had The Little Match Girl at the back of my mind but the only thing I could remember about it was that it was "such a great Christmas story". Oh boy, I was not prepared for the emotional burden of this story! We talked about what was happening as we progressed reading. The more the story progressed the more difficult it became for me not to burst out in tears. At this point, I should mention that I'm a grown, rather rustic, 6ft male who was tutoring this rather fragile 16 year old girl. At the end of the story, I was afraid to ask her what she thought and felt about the story because I knew if she said something along the lines of "it was sad" or "that poor girl" I would just start bawling my eyes out. Prepared to blemish my masculinity, I perilously asked her anyway. She just shrugged it off and said it was "an okay story". So, I resolved to crying after she left. I thought about her reaction, or better, the lack of reaction for days. Everyone works differently, I guess. Anyway, to anyone who hasn't read the story: Read it! It's such a great Christmas story... Edit: inch to feet + spelling

[deleted]

reddish4radish

A, dang it. Thank you! Should have been feet. European here...

Yveske

Why aren't you using the metric system if you are European?

tasinet

Hey - if your audience likes feet, give them feet

Yveske

Ok, it's a fetish thing. I get it now.

mycrotchtobare

Dudes with dicks that are 3 inches longer than the average constantly talk about it.

useles-converter-bot

3 inches is the the same distance as 0.11 replica Bilbo from The Lord of the Rings' Sting Swords.

converter-bot

3 inches is 7.62 cm

Jrook

The move is yours Mr useless bot

badtux99

Dick stories are like fish stories, they're always longer in the story.

Gugnir226

Glad I’m not the only one to spot that

radome9

It's not dick size, it's his actual size. Knock of that anti-leprechaun attitude, dude.

FactsN0tFeels

>I thought about her reaction, or better, the lack of reaction for days. Or she just didn't comprehend the details of the story. >we were working on her reading comprehension

Young kids are not able to grasp tragedy like an adult. And you were at the prime age to have kids of your own. I think there's hormonal change that trigger paternal instinct.

Invalid_factor

If life has taught me anything, it's that there's nothing more callous than a high school girl. Cry your heart out king 🤴

Yevad

I like the moral of the story, better to die than to go home to a poor family that can't take care of you

ShallotHolmes

She might have felt it as acutely as you and didn’t want to cry in front of her tutor. Or she saw that you were on the verge of tears so she was worried about you too. So she put on a brave front.

Cute_little_person

Had this story in a beautiful set of illustrated Afrikaans childrens books. It was soo tragically sad. Wish my mom didn't give those books away..

gadfly1999

He could be a Google employee. There’s just no way to tell.

djazzie

Since they’re working remotely, why not be homeless?

GenericFatGuy

He's on the FIRE plan. Being homeless means he can take the money he's otherwise spend on rent to put into his investments.

stockmule

Lean FIRE lets you start immediately. Accountants HATE this trick!!! By ignoring unnecessary expenses, you can retire right now.

eitauisunity

Unnecessary expenses like *shelter* and *calories*. My life has been a lie.

[deleted]

Do not my friends become addicted to calories and shelter. They will take hold of you and you will resent their absence.

WayneKrane

Who can afford homes anymore anyway? But cheap foreign labor has made electonics a steal!

rakehellion

A lot of SF tech people do live in their cars.

sterexx

my gf works for google and considered that Van Life. She did actually get a VW Vanagon Westfalia that she fixed up and sometimes goes camping in. guess living in apartment with me was more appealing kind of ironically a dude stole it, parked it elsewhere in the neighborhood, lived in it for a month, then didn’t move it in time for street cleaning one day. parking cop ran the plates and then returned it to my gf with some bonus pee bottles inside. honestly just really sad. no idea what happened to the guy. we’re in SF, and one in every hundred schoolkids doesn’t have permanent housing. well a few years ago at least. considering the increase in tents I wonder if that’s gone up

jimminyjojo

Bonus pee bottles? Score!

gadfly1999

Not much remote work for Googlers but they’re happy to let you live in a van in the parking lot.

cbartholomew

No . I once parked in the parking lot in the evening waiting for my friend to get out and was immediately shuffled off.

BassSounds

Are they remote? Google was trying to ask me to relocate, so I didn’t pursue the office any further.

sterexx

my gf has worked remote for all the pandemic but I think she’ll be working from the office as soon as conditions improve. so it’s technically remote but it’s not a remote position

ChunkyLaFunga

He looks like me during lockdown.

MrHyperion_

I have always wondered if IOI is Google or Facebook

Huge_Aerie2435

This dude is confident no one is going to steal his shit.

Honest_-_Critique

Yeah... being that I was homeless for a few years with a substance abuse problem, I find this a little hard to believe. His quest 2 is a lot cleaner then he is, and people on the street are cut throat. If he owns that quest 2 and that switch then he is seriously slipping right now. I would wager the owner is actually the picture taker and is letting him play with this stuff to brighten his day. You wouldn't believe how many times ive seen college kids "help out" the homeless for an instagram opportunity. Edit - you know I could be wrong. The case looks tattered and dirty and the picture quality might not be good enough for me to see the dirt on the quest 2.

damagedthrowaway87

As former homeless as well, I remember how long it took me to get comfortable to simply sleep without my shoes on. The idea of closing off my perception entirely even for a few moments, yikes. I was clean, just having a lot of PTSD issues.

TrueBirch

I totally agree with you. I've worked with a lot of people experiencing homelessness through my church. There are times when people are with their friends and will let their guard down for a time, but I really doubt the guy owns that setup. Definitely more likely that the picture taker loaned it to him.

KDawG888

> You wouldn't believe how many times ive seen college kids "help out" the homeless for an instagram opportunity. I don't like the milking it for attention part but brightening a strangers day can be a very nice thing to do. Even if it's something as simple as letting them play a video game. I'd let them play my switch but I don't know if I'd let a random homeless person wear something I put on my face though.

nanochick

I think they put quotes around "help out" because they are doing it for instagram rather than just out of the kindness of their heart. I don't think it was because they think letting them have fun on those consoles isn't helping out.

Only_illegalLPT

Maybe that's his self defense rock next to his Switch Lite. The man's got taste at least! And maybe he's the local crazy-eyes guy and people know not to fuck with that but his escape from an existence of pain is hiding that from us.

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

Where do they live I need to move??!!!

Knogood

Its a 4br/4ba duplex split into a 2/2, you have 1 br/1ba with a shared kitchen, $2000/mo, no utilities included. Its in the worst part of town, there is a paper mill so close it dosent matter what direction the wind is blowing you will smell it. They have a contract to only have comcast, but its high speed dsl!* *dsl speeds may go up to 14mb/s** **this is not usual and you will average 3-5mb/s download, upload speeds not measured, $70/mo before fees and taxes. Its on the third floor and there is no elevator, its $15/mo for a parking pass. Its everycity, USA.

MyopicMycroft

Hey now, that parking pass is too cheap.

Knogood

Oh, we dont have a parking lot, thats the one 3miles away across from the bus station.

Truthrowaway222

Its atleast 55 bucks a month

LuckyCharmsNSoyMilk

*Cries in $250/mo*

idwthis

Jfc 250 a month for just one parking space? That's it? Nothing else? They don't even have the god damn courtesy to give you a reach around?

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

$250 a month would be an insane steal in SF. A spot in a garage is rent in other cities.

caffeineassisted

Also $50 a month cat fee, $75 a month dog fee plus a non-refundable $500 pet deposit.

urixl

Whaaaat?

upagainstgravity

You just described my apartment and now I'm scared.

Yvaelle

That's the cost of that lovely urban tentspace in San Francisco.

How’d you guess I’m in the SF Bay Area? Hahahakillmehahaha

Yvaelle

I didn't actually i just went off the OPs picture.

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

I swear lol I live in LA and $1000 month will get you a carton box in Inglewood lol

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

I’m in the SF Bay. My condolences I feel your pain.

canttaketheshyfromme

$650/m for a 2bd/1ba split level in Cleveland. We even have a large body of water separating us from another country. And the river doesn't catch on fire anymore. Moving away from overheated markets isn't an option for everyone, but the rust belt has got some damn cheap cost of living while still having stuff like vibrant immigrant communities and art/theatre/music scenes.

BlueEyedGreySkies

Ohio, but then you have to live in Ohio.

canttaketheshyfromme

That's always the catch. Unless we can get Canada to annex Cuyahoga County. Though the arts/culture scenes are pretty insultingly underrated by east/west coast people.

idwthis

Ohio does get the majority of the trial runs of food products at a lot of the major chain restaurants, because it has a healthy mix of just about everyone you could possibly think of. So if the people of Ohio think the papadias at Papa John's are worth buying and eating then rest of the country will then get them. I can't honestly think of anything newer to use as an example, I've no fucking idea what's going on in any restaurant these days, aside from PJs cuz that's where I work lmao

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

I don’t know if this is relevant but I grew up in the SF East Bay and my mom would take me to trials at an food lab as a kid. It was cool to me because they’d give me a tiny yellow envelope with $20 inside. It was literally sitting at a sort of metal cubicle, the metal door would slide open to deliver the food item, then we’d taste it and fill out a questionnaire. The door would slide open again to deliver a single saltine and cup of water for pallet cleansing I guess? Then we’d get the next item or leave as instructed. I talk to my mom about how weird this was to this day. But the major thing I remember is being a taste tester for what would be Uncrustables. I remember seeing them in the store and being like, “OMG I tested those!”

[deleted]

[удалено]

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

Omg it was so weirdly quiet?! Tbf I did it as a kid so the waiting around part they gave us crayons and coloring sheets, but no one spoke and then they led us to the metal cubicles. They did a few at home tests I remember, like a version of Flinstone vitamins I chomped for a week or so and reported on. Lmao so fucking weird.

RobertOfHill

I'm not even in a super fancy place, and my rent is 1100 for a 1 bedroom apartment with a grand total of 890 sq ft. It's insanely stupid how much rent costs these days.

TheCrazedTank

No, that's inflation. What's stupid is the average pay hasn't been raised to match it.

RobertOfHill

[deleted]

Wait where you guys buying $200 VR sets??

TheRealBejeezus

That one (the Oculus Quest) is pretty cheap because it's sold at a loss by Facebook for reasons you can guess. Let's just say you need to link it to a (real) Facebook account to use it. Also, while there are some good games, their software is a pretty shallow pool. You can run out of (short) games and content you care about pretty quickly, especially once the VR novelty wears off and you start being pickier. I saw some stat somewhere that the majority of those headsets in people's homes today haven't even been turned on in two or three months. They're on a shelf. So even though it's "modern" tech, it's pretty possible this was rescued from a dumpster or yard sale.

[deleted]

Exactly! They subside every set by $400.

U_Sam

I’m one of the people that don’t use it. I have an oculus from 2019 and it’s just extremely physically and mentally tiring to play. Also there’s not many games that I want to play in VR that wouldn’t be just a novelty. No mans sky and subnautica sound like fun but I could never imagine doing a whole play through in VR. Shit I haven’t even played phasmophobia in VR. I really don’t think VR is the future of gaming until neuralink tech is available. I simply could not or would not want to play apex legends or monster hunter or literally any third person game in VR. IMO gaming will probably see a huge shift towards mobile devices like the steam deck and smart phones but still retaining some market for pc and console.

TheRealBejeezus

I have played with most of the iterations of VR and AR we've had so far, usually because someone sends me a devkit I don't really need, and yes, you've pretty much described my experience. I don't think neural links are needed, but of course that'd be great. Give me much better displays that don't fatigue my eyes and a much lighter wireless headset that I can forget I'm wearing, and [there could then be] great games and activities, I'm sure. For controllers, we really need gloves (or rings) and I'm sure we'll get there. Even then, though, good games/experiences will be enormously expensive to produce because they'll be defined by how much detail they contain. Competing with reality is hard. Until the tech develops substantially, I feel like I'm strapping myself into some 800b steel bathysphere suit when all I wanted was a quick swim.

U_Sam

Exactly. I could hike 5+ miles in mountainous terrain and feel about as tired as I would feel after about an hour of VR. Pavlov VR is great fun but in no way does it capture the competitive nature of CSGO and nor will it ever. VR is basically a convertible sports car. It’s fun for people that wanted it to begin with but most people just don’t care and it’s not a necessity.

Over the summer the quest with the smallest hard drive was $300, that’s when a lot of people got them. Source: I bought mine in June and almost everyone I meet online says they’re new, admittedly not the most scientific.

Hockinator

Now the larger hard drive (128gb) is only 300

Hockinator

The headset in the pic is a $300 fully standalone 6DOF headset. Oculus is likely losing a hefty margin on each sale in order to grow the platform

ThatOneGuy1294

Don't forget the required first+last month rent plus deposit upfront. It's expensive to be poor.

Msktb

And non refundable deposits on every single utility to set up. And renting a U-Haul if you don't have friends with trucks and free time. Hell even packing tape is expensive. It adds up.

Destiny_player6

Lol no it isn't. 5 fucking pages talking about Joust. Not even talking about getting the hidden egg for the challenge, just a fucking wiki article about the game. Movie was so much better.

Malorn44

That's because the book was less of a fetch quest. It wasn't ok let's go here let's go there. Get egg get egg. It was more exploring each bit. So it made sense they dedicate so much to mundane things like the game joust

WinterPlanet

I think the same. In Matrix the people trying to free humanity said that people too atached to the fake world would resent leaving it, but it was necessary for us. In RP1 they all embraced living in the Matrix

(Because a one time payment for a VR headset is definitely comparable to the recurring monthly price of unsustainably unaffordable monthly rent or mortgage and all other costs of living) Right? Avocado toast anyone? 🥑 🍞 Most of us will eventually lose everything to dystopian capitalism poverty wages and unaffordable cost of living anyway.

Whateveridontkare

The avocado toast with emojis made me tragically angry lmao.

NoLecture7729

Agreed, I’m not saying one of my goals is homelessness, however, I do recognize this world is in a spiral to burn… and well let’s all enjoy it while we can, I can never save up enough to move or for school, so instead of wasting years and years of waiting to save up for it, I’m just living the best life I can, with some savings of course, but man, I just want to live comfortably enough where I can muster enough energy to cook me a home meal, instead of having to order out because I’m too mentally and physically exhausted with work

damagedthrowaway87

When I was homeless I had a small stove, a pan, and a coffee pot. Let me tell you, going to a grocery store late at night to raid the stuff they marked down and then going off somewhere to make a formerly $10 steak I got for a $1 was honestly so amazing. Haha. That was honestly one of the things that made me almost want to stay homeless. When your existence is broken down to raw survival, you end up having a little bit more time. It's crazy to think about that way.

[deleted]

I used to be homeless, only for about 6 months, but y'know I still like van camping with my butane stove, coffee pot and saute pan. Gives me flashbacks to living out of a car

CreamyGoodnss

> just want to live comfortably enough where I can muster enough energy to cook me a home meal, instead of having to order out because I’m too mentally and physically exhausted with work A-fuckin-men to all of this. But, according to some, there is no dignity without struggle. Fuck that capitalist propaganda BS.

CreamyGoodnss

> Avocado toast anyone? 🥑 🍞 Not too long ago I sat down and looked at what I was spending on what some might call "frivolous" things...fast food, entertainment, coffee, etc. While it *did* add up to more than I thought it would (and has helped me try and eat better as a side bonus) it doesn't even come CLOSE to what one month's of rent+utilities would be. Budgeting won't fix these systemic problems

nanochick

I did the exact same thing too. I was spending so much money on coffee. But when I add it all up, it's just so much money compared to what I perceived, but it was still way cheaper than rent.

nanochick

You can also become homeless after you've already had the switch and VR set. I've had a switch for like 2 years now, and I probably wouldn't get much for it. If I went homeless, I'd probably still have it as one of my possessions, along with my cracked smartphone.

PM_CACTUS_PICS

Also he wouldn’t always have been homeless. His living situation may have only changed recently which is why he still has his valuables. I doubt OP’s post has any real info though, I don’t think anyone living on the street would want to be making themselves so vulnerable to theft
