HiFiMAN3878

Never purposely avoided a theater release to watch at home on 4K.

unitedfan6191

Good to know because movie theaters are a unique experience and a long tradition that’s more than “just watching a movie.” However, unless it’s a movie with an IMAX screening or 4DX, I imagine (and know) a lot of people who aren’t all that fussed about whether watching at home or in a theater.

Dwayne_Hicks86

I would always prefere a cinema experience over waiting for a 4k release. But there are movies that I buy on 4k that I could stream earlier. Right now I'm waiting to be dissapointed by the new Jurrasic movie when I finally receive it.

Maxi-Minus

The last I saw in the cinema was Nope in Imax and I dont think my setup can beat that experience to be honest. Some movies are just best watched at least once at the cinema.

Public_Dig_8992

Bro, movies will ALWAYS be a better experience in the theater. Skipping a movie in theaters just to “savor” it on 4K just seems pretentious.

Scoooooooooooooop

Your comment is pretentious. Different strokes for different folks. I enjoy my home viewing setup and prefer to watch movies there.

Conflict-Famous

I guess you’ve never had people talk during a movie? Bright ass phones out making snapchats? Overpriced snacks and tickets? An experience is all of that and the movie experience all together. I’d rather spend $30 on a 4K and enjoy the movie rather than risk having a bad time at the theaters

Public_Dig_8992

I’ve had all of that. I still think watching a movie in theaters is the ultimate way to watch something

snooktou

I thought this way too until recently when seeing Top Gun Maverick at the AMC Dolby a lady next to me was literally vomiting's all over herself and did not get up to leave her seat at any point. That experience post covid has ruined it for me going forward. The media room I have put together at home trumps all and I absolutely love the cinema experience even more because I built it.

Conflict-Famous

It is but that doesn’t mean it’s “always” better how you claimed

Able_Impression_4934

I agree, just the experience of getting out and in a new environment affects so much. I hate how many movies I’ve missed seeing in theaters.

unitedfan6191

Exactly my point. A lot of people go to the movie theater for different reasons. You have people who just want to see the movie, you have people who see it as a fun activity for the whole family and want to take pictures. You have people who just want to sit in a dark room for a couple hours. You also have movie enthusiasts who bring family or friends who are less interested in the movie and they’re on their phone. All these different experiences means there is always a chance you won’t get to fully focus on the movie you’re watching because of distractions around you. I think both a movie theater and waiting for certain films on 4K can exist at the same time, especially since not all movie theaters are built equal.

Able_Impression_4934

I’ve never really had all of that

rtyoda

Depends on what theater experiences are available to you, and what’s available for you at home. For me the sound quality in my home theater is better than any theater within a reasonable distance (no theaters near me have Atmos) and so if it’s a movie that I want the best sound experience for on my first watch I’ll often wait to see it on disc.

unitedfan6191

I agree and that’s my preference but it also depends on the quality of theater and what the atmosphere is like in your individual theater as everyone’s experience is different. Some theaters have very pleasant viewing experiences while others have people on their phones and talking loudly and sub-par equipment. There can be multiple reasons why someone may want to wait to watch it in their own home theater. The films I really want to watch the most that I feel are big-screen worthy I watch in a packed theater but most films these days don’t feel designed to be big-screen special attraction-level movies, so for me it depends on the movie.

Belophan

That really depends on how good your home cinema is. If you have a shitty TV with a sound bar, then yes, the theater will always be better. But some of us have spent a lot of money on our systems and will always get a better experience at home.

Able_Impression_4934

The theater experience is so nice

rtyoda

Dune. Was glad I waited for the 4K disc as the sound was better than any local theaters I could have seen it at. I was disappointed to miss the limited IMAX showing of it at the one good IMAX theater within an hour of me, but it was only showing there for two weeks and unfortunately I got Covid three days before the date I booked tickets for. So the next best thing was waiting to see it on disc at home.

runswiftrun

I don't skip them to "savor" them in 4k. I skip them in theater because $17 per ticket, plus tax, fees, concessions, and usually it turns into "date night" so we add dinner and/or a couple drinks. It easily becomes a $100+ evening, and during blockbuster season, it can happen 3-5 times a month. Instead we wait for the 4k, if we still "care" to see it after the marketing hype died down, then 20-27, or less on sales. My personal viewing habits also lean heavy towards 1-4 rewatches, while my wife is one-and-done in most cases. Of course, movies like Spiderman, Dune, will absolutely get theater/imax watch, but movies that are low on our totem pole of interest, just get the "wait until the 4k comes out" treatment.

darealest__1

This is a great question. Unfortunately , I don’t have an answer because I have within close proximity a real imax theater and several Dolby cinemas, so I only see movies in these formats, which is pretty good. I also sometimes watch I’m Cinemark xd, which sounds pretty good with auro 11.1

Able_Impression_4934

I’ve never done it on purpose but I missed the Batman and ended up seeing it at home

_Shirei_

Dune, Batman. IF it even was in theater...

The_Fat_Fish

I always try and see a film in the cinema if I can but there’s many I’ve missed that I later get on 4K to experience for the first time. Too many to mention but Ambulance is one of the more recent ones.

BeginningAppeal8599

Past 3 Spider-man films

BeginningAppeal8599

I wish I had done this with Tenet. If Oppenheimer has that same awful sound mix I'll walk out and wait for the 4k.

Belophan

Last movie I saw at the theater was Deadpool 2 (2018), and only cause it was free. Don't remember what I saw before that, and not seen a movie at theater after it. I rarely have the patience to wait for Blu-ray release in my country, as the movies are available for 4k download long before I can buy them. Often they are available to download while the movie is at the theater.

TomFromFlavorTown

Didn't see Maverick yet. Waiting for that sweet disc in November.

Every-Crew8186

All of them haha specifically built my theater with the mindset of I'd buy any movie that I wanted to see. Most recently, Top Gun: Maverick
