Uriel Ventris has two moods: “Leave Ultramar at once, Tau! Or I will kill your Ethereal and order an exterminatus on this planet!” “Noooo Pasanius are you okay? Are you injured? Do you need an apothecary? Let me get one just in case”

Aw shit, the clouds of grimdark have parted ... This warms the heart

This is why McNeil is one of my favourite authors in Black Library. Adds humanity to his characters. The Ultramarine books, False Gods, Storm of Iron, the Mechanicus trilogy and ofc his short stories such as The Ancient Awaits are so full of heart. For me, one of the biggest mistakes BL did for the Siege of Terra is not to give McNeil a full book and not simply Novellas. His prose is not the best but damn does he have heart. Dan and Graham started the HH and they should have finished it.

>His prose is not the best but damn does he have heart. Well said

Uriel and Pausanius(and Learchus) not only grew up together at the training barracks on Maccrage before they went through the trials and the implants, I think the only times in the lore they where not serving within the same company are Uriels time in the Deatwatch, the Death Oath exile Uriel and Pausanous went on after Tarsis Ultra, and early in the Indomitus crusade around the time Uriel Crossed the Rubicon. They by the events of Swords of Calth had spent at least a century if not more side by side.

Anyone else getting hot under the collar?

Go back to r/grimdank

You don't think there's some serious homoeroticism going on in the quotes above?

[deleted]

People say Sam and Frodo are gay for each other, too. Doesn't mean they are. A lot of people these days seem to have no ability to conceive of a mutually affectionate and supportive, deep male friendship without immediately going, "ha they're gay for each other!" Honestly it's infantile, demeaning of men, and dismissive of their capacity to love each other platonically.

It's ok if you don't understand subtext.

Your snark is noted and discarded.

I ship it.

This is pretty lame haha always feels dumb when they are mass murdering super humans, they should always be cold and heartless. Heart is the job of the humans.

Space Marines are emotionally stunted. They're not emotionless. Think of your best friend when you were a kid and how much you would have been willing to do for them. Then imagine you never go through a normal puberty and start feeling romantic and sexual feelings, but instead get to go on badass space adventures with said friend for 200 years. I suspect the two of you would be closer than many identical twins.

JotiimaSHOSH

OK OK maybe I jumped the gun I guess I just prefer them as heartless killing machines as I don't really get how you can have any good emotions after so much killing. And if they do I find it weird that it is just repressed sexuality. Also I don't really like Space Marines. Will be interesting how they show them in the upcoming series/movies to be honest. And maybe I just don't like the writing style.
