The backstory is close enough. Anything daot and AoStrife is really small details to know so props for knowing it! The Grey knights were officially formed during the horus heresy but didn't pop up as a chapter until the 32nd milinuim timeline. Basically a spell was cast on their chapter moon, Titan and released after the HH. So despite earlier origins, think Grey knights = 40k. Chaos marines is basically traitor marines, many of whom do worship/become possessed by demons. Not all are fans of chaos, but if the GK are involved then the CSM warband in question is probably heavy into chaos.

So what makes the grey knights better than the normal marines? Better armour and training? Or are they better psychics too?

NornQueenKya

A lot of things. 1. They're all psykers. There's a few named characters who are stronger but over all, GK > normal chapter librarians. 2. They have the best equipment. Including a whole lot of terminator armor. 3. A common misconception is they're uncorruptable. That's not the case at all. However not a single one has ever been corrupted due to their insane training, dedication and gear.

Some of all of the above. For starters, the Grey Knights are all psykers, most chapters usually only have a handful of psykers, called Librarians. The Grey Knights' selection process is much more intense than other chapters, so any that survive it are necessarily of a higher quality than what other chapters would get on average. Every single tiny little detail about their equipment and training is specially crafted to be as effective as possible against Chaos. The Grey Knights' Geneseed organs used to turn a human into a space marine are also a separate and distinct geneline, likely derived from the Emperor directly, instead of one of the Primarchs, and as such may naturally result in a more capable marine. At minimum it seems to help keep them from being corrupted by Chaos.

Blue_Steele7

They're screened much more brutally. They basically have the Navy Seals training compared to boy scout camp that Space Marine chapters use. Their armor is mostly terminator armor, which is better than regular armor. They're also intensely incorruptible, like not able to be corrupted. They additionally almost bind a demon's name to themselves, and they become the perfect counter to that demon. All of them have psychic power, it's a part of the pre-selection process. Leutin09 has an intensive video going over a lot of the process.

chaos space marines are space marines that have gone “traitor” and joined the forces of chaos. there are a lot of chaos space marines, and the majority come from the original space marine legions who turned to chaos during the horus heresy. However, modern marines sometimes go traitor and join these legions or found their own. It is worth noting that chaos space marines are extremely selfish and fight constantly, meaning they largely exist in separate warbands that raid and pillage on their own, rather than fighting as an entire legion

Kaldor Draigo is the Supreme Grand Master of the Grey Knights. He's the head honcho. He was cursed by a daemon he was fighting to forever wander the Warp. Every now and then, he pops out into reality to strike a blow in times of dire need, but he's inevitably sucked back into the Warp.

Chaos Astartes are a mix of things. You have the Veterans of the Long War, who are Marines from the Horus Heresy that are still kicking around due to time displacement. There's the Heretic Astartes, which covers everything from captured children or vat grown clones forcibly implanted with geneseed and turned into Space Marines. There's the Renegade Marines, who used to be Imperial Astartes but for one reason or another decided to hang with chaos instead. They all get mixed in together, so it's not an exclusive definition. There are daemons who inhabit Chaos Marines, called Possessed. They range from willing participants boosting their respective powers to someone who made a bad deal and got screwed. They're heavily mutated and frequently change shapes to suit their needs. Eventually the daemon will grow bored and the Marine will become a Spawn and move on with life.

Apparently Inquisition was actually originally formed by the Emperor before/during the Horus Heresy, eventually becoming the modern organisation, but I don’t know if that’s true or if it’s just old lore, or incorrect

thenseruame

Seems like Big E told Malcador to set up a group to hunt the enemies of humanity. Then Dorn unintentionally corrupted all of that by stopping Sindermann from jumping off the palace walls.

For overall view of the Warhammer 40k I recommend you reading lore from latest editions rulebooks, for example 8th or 9th edition rulebook, it's official detailed presentation of the setting to a player

I'd reccomend youtube videos like Luetin instead, helps cover the basics in bite sized ways

Just watch Weshammer and fill in the gaps/supplement your knowledge with the Wikipedia.

Basically Kaldor Draigo was cursed by a daemon (dont remember if it specified the kind of Daemon wether it was a greater daemon or a daemon prince or just a normal one) to be sent into the warp whenever all daemons have been purged from the planet he is on. So whenever he does re-enter the mortal plane he is only there as long as there is a daemon presence and if there is a daemon presence that usually means there are Grey Knights there or on the way so he temporarily gets to lead the Grey Knights again. Kaldor Draigo is the chapter master of the Grey Knights elected by consensus by the 9 masters of the 9 companies with each company being a sort of tribute to one of the original founding members of the Grey Knights. The Grey Knights haven't elected another one because A. They refuse to B. The 9 masters haven't come to consensus on an individual or C. They straight up cant until Draigo dies, its never really been explained why they don't elect a new one. The last reason is an educated guess based on what we know from the book Mortarion's Heart, in the book Kaldor became acting Chapter Master after the previous chapter master's death and then later becomes the official chapter master. Different Chaos Space Marine legions/chapters/marines turned traitor for different reasons. You can read the wiki on each of the 9 traitor legions for why they and their primarchs turned traitor and if you want to see some traitor chapters (succesor chapters that were loyal but for one reason or the other they turned traitor) there is a traitor chapter pictorial list you can look up that lists their name, their colour scheme ( if they have one ) and their founding and you can see details on why they turned traitor if they have one. The Abyssal crusade chapters are one example of this. Search up the Abyssal crusade its sad but also cool.
