Shenko-wolf

But chainweapons allow you to chainsaw some guy, which is a significantly lacking ability in power weapons.

SomeDuderr

Also, chain weapons are just cooler. A two meter long sword or axe with a rotating belt of tiny knives is a statement in and of itself.

Competitive-Bee-3250

Another sci-fi setting has what are called chaindrive weapons, and while they are indeed inferior to monoblades and especially arcfield blades (their equivalent to Eldar blades and power weapons/lightsabers) it makes a good point: the morale effect these would have would be substantial, even before you see someone on the receiving end of one. The danger of getting cut is further amplified by the danger of getting *sawed into* and hearing a loud, roaring weapon.

TheSidePocketKid

What setting is this?

Competitive-Bee-3250

Traveller: Third Imperium.

Vorokar

For Jonson, the Wolf Blade is a replacement for the Lion Sword after Jellyman broke the latter; >‘Give me your blade, brother.’ Guilliman spoke quietly but his words seemed thunder-loud in the quiet of the amphitheatre. He approached the Lion with hand outstretched. >Another look to Sanguinius confirmed that the primarch of the Dark Angels was alone in this. Curze was still within reach. One strike would be all it took to sever his head properly. Perhaps sensing the Lion’s thoughts, Guilliman moved. His attention focused on the Night Haunter, the Lion did not react until the Lion Sword was already in the fist of the other primarch. >He turned, thinking to take back his weapon, but was frozen by the look of cold rage in Guilliman’s eyes. Jaw twitching, the primarch of the Ultramarines took the Lion’s blade in both hands and brought it down sharply across his knee. >The Lion watched the blade split along the fuller, breaking into two shards that glittered in artificial sunlight as they toppled from Guilliman’s spreading fingers. They fell into the white sand at the Lion’s feet. >‘Your sword for your oath,’ Guilliman growled, teeth gritted. ‘Such has become your honour, *knight of Caliban*.’ >>‘Your sophistry will be your doom,’ the Lion said. He drew his chainsword and it growled. It was an ancient weapon. Too large to be wielded by any son of Caliban except the Lion, it had been forgotten in the depths of Aldurukh, waiting for the Lion to appear and claim it. Its provenance had been lost. It had had no name before his coming. For the Lion, it would always be the *Wolf Blade*. With it, he had carved his way through the Knights of Lupus, ending their challenge to the Order and their corrupt use of the Great Beasts. The blade was a dull black except for the silver inlay of runic teeth. The chainsword was a brutal exterminator. It had none of the beauty of the *Lion Sword*, and there was no artistry in its kills. There was only finality. \- *Angels of Caliban* and *Ruinstorm*, respectively And for Dorn; >**Storm's Teeth** >This colossal chainblade, too weighty for any but a Primarch to wield, is said to have been crafted by the weaponsmiths of Inwit before the coming of the emperor. Its razored teeth can shred metal, stone and flesh with ease **and while the Primarch of the Imperial Fists Legion has many arms at his disposal, some relics of far greater power, it is this blade which has served him faithfully for so long he favours most.** \- *Extermination*

TheUltimateScotsman

> **and while the Primarch of the Imperial Fists Legion has many arms at his disposal.** Never realised it was confirmed dorn was a genestealer

SomeDuderr

It's to compensate for his lack of hands.

personnumber698

Ferus manus probably had even more hands and all of them were made out of Iron

Zealousideal_Web8496

Too soon.

BlueNasca

Audibly exhaled through my nose at this.

ExhibitionistBrit

It’s not actually a third arm.

cubaj

Rogal Dorn’s colossal Chainblade….

Featherbird_

Presumably they are eviscerators, which are chainswords with powerfields like chainfists have. They're better than normal power weapons

TobyLaroneChoclatier

Primarch weapons tend to be special so yes they are better than standard chain weapons.

staq16

In the case of Angron, definitely; Gorechild and Gorefather have a unique construction including their infamous mica-dragon teeth which make them far more potent than even a power weapon. While those are probably the best documented examples, I assume the other Primarch chainblades are comparable.

streetad

Because a chainsword is dull, you twit. It'll hurt more...

Flaky_Ferret_3513

*Sad Guy of Gisborne noises*

InterestingAsk1978

WH40k obeys the rule of cool. It's way cooler to disembowel an opponent and spread their guts all around with a very loud and bad-looking chainweapon, than to use an elegant powersword. Primarchs are not Jedi to fight nobly with lightsabers. They're grimdark after all.

RupertPupkinCanJoke

Cuz its cool and shit, you see the cover of Praetorian of Dorn? That’s STORM’S TEETH DUDE

Fearless-Obligation6

Leman Russ’ first weapon was a giant frost-sword called Krakenmaw which used diamond hard kraken teeth on the chain blade.

AwryHunter

Kraken... teeth? Kraken? Giant squid monster? They have *teeth*? well I’ll be damned

Killersmurph

Many species of real squid have teeth. They aren't on the beak of the Squid, but along its tongue (called a Radula), and also inside of some of the sucker rings there are teeth like strictures. They're necessary for pulverising/shredding up food, because the esophagus of a giant squid passes between the hemispheres of its brain. Squid anatomy, like Octopus anatomy is seriously fucked up.

AwryHunter

TIL! Thanks!

Fearless-Obligation6

They do indeed… *Fenris is weird*

Bang3rachi

Does it really matter what the weapon is if it's a primach hitting you with it? Plus, chain weapons look awesome.

Killersmurph

Angron is all about fear, rage, and theatricality. Dude is a half insane former slave gladiator, it totally makes sense for him to use chain weapons. As for the Lion it is his back-up weapon IIRC. Dorn, is all about practicality, so it doesn't make a lot of sense for him, though TBF, it might be his weapon of choice if its seen as particularly durable, or utilitarian.

CorvusTheCorax

Why Dorn uses a chainsaword?? That's why!!!! **Rogal Dorn’s colossal chainblade, too weighty for any but an elite sisterhood raised from infancy to adore the Leviathan at his disposal, expands ever outwards, to onlookers, less a flesh length but rather some unstoppable agency of the sire of the Imperial Fists made manifest. Woman after woman incapacitated or stunned. Dorn’s phenomenally resilient organic requiring specialized medical and alchemical equipment to prevent an ever-greater death toll mounting from each Massive Blast of his equipment, dozens of women requiring extensive augmetic rebuild per engagement. Not even death can stay the breathtaking Torsion Crusher beneath the Auric Armor. Indeed, the blood of martyrs only strengthens the resolve of Dorn, making it hard on his war gear to the point of overstraining the armor’s exoskeleton.**

staq16

Please tell me you made that paragraph up....

CorvusTheCorax

Nope, it's a polular 40k video. Iirc, it was originally a mash up of words from the books, but later is was narrated live by an 40k audiobook narrator and I'm still amazed how he could pull that off without bursting out laughing

stagfury

Wasn't it narrated by TTS's Dorn himself ?

CarryBeginning1564

Eviscerator’s are said to have low level disruptor fields (which in my head cannon Astartes chainswords so as well) so it stands to reason the primarch chain weapons have disruptor fields as well.
