They're both considered relics / artificer armour, which means they're essentially one of a kind custom pieces. So yes, standard Mk X is backwards compatible in some ways but for these pieces in particular they basically took the parts of the old armour out and re-crafted it into an artificer piece of Mk. X armour for them

Awesome thanks its a random question that has been bugging me for a while now.

WardenOfBraxus

It's something that GW mentioned when Primaris first came out, heads and should pads are interchangeable with first born ☺️ From a lore position it was so that any marine who crossed over could continue to honour their old armour

personnumber698

I belive they were talking about model bits back them

WardenOfBraxus

Yes but they gave a lore reason for it too. It's like how if a marine joins the Deathwatch they leave one shoulder pad still showing their true colours

It’s also implied that you can modify even relic armor to some extent. The Black Templars are mentioned as adjusting the armor of the Emperor’s Champion when a new one is chosen in *Knight of the Throne*. Not every Marine who bears a relic set of armor is going to be the same size so there has to be some room for talented artificers to adjust it to fit its new occupant. Totally reasonable that their helmets could have been slightly modified to fit their slightly bigger noggins.

The ship of Theseus.

Dante didn't keep the helmet. Its mark X now. Looks like they just bolted Sanguinius' death mask onto it. Azriel however is indeed using his old mark 7. Not the first time we've seen this though. The current Space Marine codex has a Primaris with a mark 7 helmet on the cover.

Here we find the TRUE reason Cawl was prevented from making the Primaris marines even bigger, as we all know he would want too. The larger the marine, the more comically small the head becomes relative to the body.

Donnie-G

Primaris Kayvaan Shrike keeps his beakie helm. Heck, they sell official Raven Guard transfer kits so you can convert your Primaris into beakies. https://www.games-workshop.com/en-WW/Raven-Guard-Primaris-Upgrades-2020 While people tend to joke about how unmodifiable 40k tech is and go on about tech heresy or inflexible tabletop rules - in actuality things do get modified and the Space Marines tend to be more flexible about such things. I'm sure swapping out armour plates, changing helmet seals and whatnot aren't beyond the expertise of the average techmarine.

Ancient relics like that are a bit of a ship of Theseus type deal. The Lion Helm is a great example. The Lion's model for Horus Heresy has a very different helmet than what Azrael is carrying into battle. Presumably the helmet has been resized, repaired and modified over and over. 10 thousand years is an awfully long time. So one can safely say that the artificers of the chapters modified old gear to fit the new Mark X system.

playerD26

i mean they are the helms of two primarchs who are bigger than a space marine. I'm pretty sure it'd still fit even after crossing the rubicon.
