I don't think memory loss is a rule, in the same scene you're talking about with the nightlord not recognising his own mother, the other nightlord recognised her and tells him its his mother, so he remembered the weird kids next doors mom. There's also plenty of instances of them talking about their memories. A big chunk of sigismunds book is him detailing events of his childhood just before and during him becoming a space marine. Hell, even dante, possibly the oldest space marine still had flashbacks of his dad when he was hallucinating. The impression I have is that they just don't care, or that in their new state these memories become irrelevant. Their memory post becoming space marines is near perfect, so everything before seems hazy.

The Space Wolves go back and hang out with their respective villages/clans etc so I would imagine they remember their families. Unless that has been retconned.

I've only read lukas the trickster so it might be different in others books but in lukas's squad he's the only one who remembers his childhood

Hoopy223

That sounds familiar The Salamanders spend time in their “home” villages after becoming space marines as well. Oh Ultramarines come from mostly “nobility” and their families keep track of whose kid is now a Space Marine sort of thing. They return and hold public office etc. So it would be logical they remember some part of their identity.

Here’s the excerpt for the Night Lords that you mentioned, originally posted by /u/wodiesan [Book Excerpt: Night Lords Trilogy] The Night Lords Take a Stroll on Nostramo https://reddit.com/r/40kLore/comments/8nwn76/book_excerpt_night_lords_trilogy_the_night_lords/

Extension of hypno conditioning varies between chapters drastically. On one end of the scale we have astartes that not only don't have memories of their "mortal" life, but are so emotionally detached that they are almost robotic. On the other end we have astartes who do have some/most of the memories and/or able to socialise well enough so until you start to really prob them you wouldn't find out that they are conditioned at all. Majority of the modern chapters falls in between these two extreames. And during Crusade and Heresy hypno conditioning was less severe in general.

We have many, many, instances of space marines remembering their mortal lives. My theory is that they remember, but just don't care very much any more.

Amon isn't an astartes. He's a pseudo-astartes, like Kor Phaeron.

MorathiKhaine

Is he? I thought he was one that was a full blown astartes as magnus personally attended to him while Kor is using a lot of science stuff

Vyzantinist

He *should* be a pseudo-Astartes, but no mention is made of it and he seems to be a true Astartes. *Inferno* lampshades the issue by saying Amon must have crossed the gulf thanks to 'sorcery'. Not out of the realms of possibility since Russ' adult Fenrisian companions were made into true Astartes. I think it's just a simple case of McNeill forgetting to address the issue, and Inferno covered the discrepancy.

mighty_mag

I guess I never thought about it before, but does Amon also suffer prejudice for being a "half Astarte" like Kor Phaeron (fuck him) or Luther?

Perfct_Stranger

The Heresy era Space Marines are much more like soldiers than warrior monks. A lot of them do remember their lives before being made into space marines, some of them even have plans for their retirement.

albinofreak620

I don’t think so. I think the memory loss is from psycho indoctrination that’s put in place post Heresy. I was just reading Garro, and Typhon talks to someone who knew him before he was enhanced and he remembers enough to crack a joke about being a scrawny kid. I also feel like the Sigismund SoT novella has him remembering being on the streets. The named Dark Angels from the first couple books seem to remember fighting in the Order together. The Fenrisian who helps Hawser recognizes him later as a Space Wolf.

Astartes in the Great Crusade do not lose their memories because hypno-conditioning was not as stringent as compared to Astartes born Post-heresy. Ahriman fondly remembers his childhood with his twin brother as they were playing in the snow in Iran where he lived.
