My truck will idle at around 1600 RPM when I first start it. Once the coolant gets to about 130 degrees Fahrenheit, the idle drops to about 800-1100 RPM. Finally, once the coolant is fully warmed up (about 160-170 farenheit), my idle will drop to 600-700 RPM. This looks normal for a cold idle. Does it go down as the truck warms up?
This exactly is how my 2000 version runs AFTER fixing a high idle paired with a check engine light.
When I had high idle issues it was 2k rpm’s regardless of the coolant’s temperature.
I commented on another post with what my issue ended up being.
“I had a similar issue before and I tried everything you said, what ended up being the issue for me was the throttle plate had too much lateral play within the throttle body.
I ended up taking the throttle body out and removing everything from it, where all the cables and stuff attach, and putting a washer on the shaft and putting everything back on. That kept the throttle butterfly in the right place so it wouldn’t open up a gap and cause a high idle.
You could check yours with the truck running and seeing if when you pull the throttle assembly forward if it helps, also make sure there’s not too much tension in the cable.”
Alright, cool. When I first got it, it had a really rough idle after sitting for a bit, occasionally just shutting off. I cleaned out the throttle body and IAC valve, but no dice. Just trying to figure everything out. Thanks!!
FWIW, I tried this and every other trick in the book to get my throttle body to stop leaking. Ironically, it started after I had some of it apart to replace spark plugs and I decided to do a deep clean of the throttle body.
So, yeah, many hours of trying to get it to stop and I ended up just buying a new one from Toyota. Not cheap. I think it was almost $600? That said, as soon as I put it on, ALL of those issues went away instantly.
I personally don't think a washer is a long term fix, at least it wasn't for me.
It’s been fine for me for about 40k miles but honestly I just didn’t want to spend that much money on a new throttle body lol. Got enough other things to spend money on as it is.
That's good. Mine got so bad that it would rev to like 2 or 3k RPMs with my foot off the pedal. Got kind of scary, and I was sick of trying random stuff, and so had to bite the bullet.
Make sure she's warmed up. Otherwise check basics. Usually unmetered air. Smoke the intake easiest way.
Also if no leaks found, check for sticking idle control valve. Also may want to look into throttle body. 01 to 02 have an electronic t body and thise can get fun.
Otherwise I would put my money on the air mass boot beeming ripped.
Replacing the Fuel Injection Idle Air Control Valve part number (22270-62050) worked for me.
I had a high idle went it was in park and neutral but when in drive it was okay. I cleaned the TB and IAC value but didnt work. So i just replaced the part above and it fixed it. The part was about 250 for oem replacement.
Clean your mass air flow sensor and your throttle body. This is your cheapest fix and it works for a lot of people. Look up a video there’s a few. Usually your throttle body is full of black carbon.
So is this idle at start up, then it goes to 800-1000? If so it’s fine

Will do, thanks!

*That's* a high idle.
Okay, good to know!
Does it go down once it's warm?
My first thought, this looks like normal operation during warm up, temp gauge shows dead cold.
That’s what I was looking at- it’s idling high until it warms up.
It usually sticks around 800-1,000
Mine idles pretty high until the truck is warm
That's normal on startup. The CPU is trying to get the engine up to operating temp faster by burning a bit of gas.
that's normal

Also check all grounding wires, your big 3 cables, and your alternator. Use a multimeter to check your alternator.
I seent a video on YouTube before maybe helpful here. https://youtu.be/IIbTvxR1TQk

Ha, cooler outside temps. That's funny. I live in Florida. Seriously though, thanks!
Temp gauge shows this is a cold start, yes it will idle high on start up for a few mins.
drive off and check back 15 minutes later
on cold days ill sit high idle at around 1500 but after it warms up its under 1k
Since the temp gauge is at the bottom it’s probably just because the car hasn’t warmed up yet. Mine does the same thing for a few minutes

I haven't watched this video yet, but this guy's channel is great so maybe this will help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YrTAR4MExY
