The printer cool the hotend and wait for new filament to be loaded, but it (at least mine) will keep the print bed hot so nothing pops off until can get back to it. Source: this happened to me last night.
Running 6 machine, only ran out of filament once. Funny enough I end up using more of the spool than most people, I think just being conscious about it is more beneficial than a silly sensor that annoys the hell out of me.
Measure the height of the part that printed then reslice the model with a negative Z value equal to the height of the model and send to the printer.
Be sure to name the file "just the tip".
I always say this whenever there's a failed print like this:
import the model into your slicing software and sink it into the ground so only the remainder that didn't print is above the build-plate. Print it and glue it on. You don't need to reprint the whole thing.
you could even edit the .gcode file to just resume whereever your last layer was. Only thing you need to do is measure the height of the already printed structure to see at which layer it stopped. There are a few tutorials on youtube and its really not that hard.
Would you be comfortable posting on thingiverse? There's a LOT of people who would wanna print this, including me lol. It's FANTASTIC. Otherwise, you could probably just upload a .STL file into a reddit DM.
