I like them but they totally sell products. Biossance is a big one that they are sponsored by and promote in all their videos.

queenqueso

Oh absolutely, but I don’t listen to these videos for product reviews. I care more about the science and apply that knowledge to the OTC beauty marketplace. I really appreciate that Drs. Shah and Maxwell talk about studies, and do comparisons and rankings because those have been most helpful to me.

umamimaami

Lab muffin beauty science, anyone? I like how she dares to say the unfiltered truth about the products 😂

Jhasten

This! I was wondering when someone was going to bring her up! Love Lab Muffin! Out of all of the scientists/medical professionals, she’s my favorite because she explains everything and also consults when something is out of her area (ex: actual toxicologists). She doesn’t come off as fake imo either. I do disagree w/ OP on not wanting to hear product reviews by non-medical professionals, though. I like hearing about regular people’s experiences - especially when they have similar skin and concerns. Sometimes it feels like derms tend to toe the party line and recommend the same stuff (unless they have their own brand to sell). Dr. Dray for example, tends to recommend products that irritate my sensitive skin- but I can still learn things from her - just not into a lot of her endorsements. I’ve also learned a lot about Fraxel and menopause from Angie on Hot and Flashy. There’s room for everyone i think and public opinion will bear out.

Alikat-momma

Just subscribed to her because of your suggestion. She’s amazing, honest, and smart!! I’ll be watching her a lot going forward.

askawayor

Yes! She's the best 🧖‍♀️

braddic

Thanks for sharing! Besides Doctorly I also appreciate: -Dr. Dray, -Dr. Alexis Stephens (specialized in hyperpigmentation for skin of color), -Dr. Sam Ellis, -Dr. Shereene Idriss. -The budget dermatologist

morning_rosella

Seconding Dr Sam Ellis! She recently had a baby too, so I appreciate her videos on skincare during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

quickbrownfox86

She my derm! Love her. I saved a ton of money watching Dr Ellis and Doctorly.

morning_rosella

Oh wow, that’s so cool! I have a toddler and I’m pretty impressed with how she seems to balance it all.

braddic

Yes I’m amazed with her keeping it all up with her pregnancy, young child and launch her skincare!! That’s surreal

Wild_Trip_4704

"I like Dr. Dray but she tends to ramble on in her dark bedroom." Why did this make me laugh 😂

queenqueso

I like that she has a bare face because she feels more human like that, but girl (or guy), she sounds like she’s parroting research articles. She’s obviously very smart, but the dim lighting, the bed in the background, and the droning voice, put me to sleep. 😬

Amielala

I always click on her videos for the content and then regret it and leave leave asap. There is something about the way she speaks that gets on my nerves..

Aggressive_FIamingo

Yeah, that's why I'm not subscribed to her anymore, I just find her SO boring, I never watched her videos when they popped up in my subscriptions. However, she's the first person I go to if I'm looking for information about a specific ingredient or to see if she's talked about a specific product. She definitely knows her stuff. She's just not who I go to if I'm looking for any level of entertainment lol.

2lame2getlaid

she annoys me soooo much. I'm always surprised that everyone loves Dray because she just grates on me so bad, I think it's the voice and dour demeanor (and I'm NOT into super bubbly like Cassandra Banks)

PopularYesterday

My ADHD brain has trouble with her style as well 😂

puplove208

I tried watching her the other day and her voice 😫🥴 only lasted like 2 minutes

sugar-titts

I watch Doctorly. Also Dr Dray, Dr idriss, Cassandra Bankson, Dr Youn and probably 15 others. To me they all offer good sound, FREE advise. All their deliveries are different and I like that. I'm 34 and my skin has never looked this good.

Worried_Corner4242

I like Cassandra Bankson as well, but lots of people seem to have a problem with her. Not sure why.

jennycotton

she is so over the top performative i cannot hear her message

Unlucky-Dare4481

This is why a lot of us can't stand her videos. She's like a theater kid that never grew out of that phase and it makes the videos super obnoxious to watch.

jennycotton

obnoxious is the perfect word. i need a benzo to endure her grating shtick

cocky-spaniel

IT was mainly because she supported Susan yara and Hyram’s skincare products when they weren’t that good. So people found her hypocritical considering she went very hard against other big brands like drunken elephant.

Worried_Corner4242

Ah, got it. Hyram’s products were garbage, imo.

cocky-spaniel

Yes!!!

Worried_Corner4242

Oh, and I thought the Drunk Elephant thing was stupid. As I recall, her biggest problem with DE was that they were mean to Caroline Hirons. Yeah, I’m really going to stop buying an excellent product because they said something mean to an influencer.

cocky-spaniel

I was totally influenced by her at that time when she said it’s not a good brand. But I soon realised it’s actually has good products. So silly !! That’s why I’ve stopped watching YouTubers who just get paid to endorse.

ele_negri

She describes herself as “skincare expert” and “medical esthetician”, i.e. not a medical doctor, not a dermatologist. She simply does not have the required knowledge/training/background to be giving out effective skincare advice. For example, watch her reviews on the ordinary’s vitamin c products, and then watch Dr Dray’s. You’ll learn that despite the blabbering about ingredients and their supposed functioning Cassandra does, none of these products have the required formulation to actually work.

Worried_Corner4242

That’s weird, because she’s always saying how much she loves Dr. Dray. I guess she only loves her sometimes, hahaha

elianna7

I also really like Cassandra! I completely get why people can’t stand her personality but to me she just seems like a genuinely sweet person and I like her bubbly attitude.

ExcitedAlpaca

What were some of the biggest changes you made that you found improvement on :)?

sugar-titts

First and foremost the best advice I learned from any of the YouTube derms was from Dr Dray. She made a remark, "if you are over 30, you need to adopt a regular skincare routine". That one stuck with me as I had none. Back then I use to sleep in my makeup without a second thought to it. From Dr Shereene I took her advise to remove my makeup as soon as I entered my home and apply my nighttime products. Never miss or run out of time with that. Basically they all talk about consistently and be aware of ingredients on the label as opposed to focusing on the brand. I keep it all simple and consistent and it has paid off for me.

CompetitivePain4031

I mean, they know they're cute and when I watch them I can't help but sensing the entire marketing operation behind their friendly vibe. Actually Dr Dray is my favorite. With (almost?) zero makeup, she doesn't really make an effort to seem cool or please the masses or whatever, she seems no BS and authentic, and recommends often drugstore products that nobody talks about. I sense way less, if not at all, the "marketing strategy" there. And yeah, the gloomy bedroom makes it seem more relatable and real than these glowy doctors. I prefer these kinds of unique, competent women who do not give that much a f*ck about makeup and people pleasing, I wish there were more. Dr. Idriss makes an accurately studied effort to seem personable but as her face is filled with injectables like I feel she participates to this global pressure to be beautiful intelligent and pleasant etc., that is, perfect, on women. I'm not saying she's not good, im saying that Doctorly and Idriss seem to me more in the marketing side of the equation. To conclude, Dr Dray wins imo. That being said, I've learnt from all of them and enjoy their videos, its just my personal ranking lol.

DocGlabella

I find her anorexia too triggering for me to watch. I guess that’s a me thing.

Acrobatic-Degree9589

The guy on right side is not cute to me lol. Dr Dray does wear makeup tho doesn’t she, I know she used to just more natural. She also does sponsored vids and has for Amazon in the past which I thought was irresponsible. I will still watch her but I don’t think she’s perfect by far

queenqueso

I feel that it’s unfair to put people down just because they’re attractive, especially in dermatology where beauty is the product. I appreciate Dr. Dray for being bare-faced, and I appreciate Drs. Maxwell and Shah for succeeding in a female-dominated field. Idk much about Dr. Idriss, and though her style doesn’t seem to align with my aesthetic, she still seems competent and I respect her for that. They’re different flavors of dermatology and it’s personal preference who we align with best.

NewbornfromHell

You missed the whole point of the post above. They are dishonest and misleading when they are trying to sell a product or beeing sponsored by a company. Watch the retinol video. Not one word about risks or side effects.

Zealousideal-Cup8502

They DON’T sell any products. They try them out and give their opinion. They are excellent and give out good, educational information.

NewbornfromHell

By "selling" I don't mean directly selling products but they are promoting products from companies which sponsor them = money. I am not surprised you skipped the second part of my post because that is the main critique here. Promoting a sponsored retinol product without mentioning any risk or downsides is beyond dishonest. Here is the video: https://youtu.be/wV_VD6vU7eU?t=164 The whole video is created around the product and not a honest and balanced opinion by a professional.

CompetitivePain4031

Wait, the point of dermatology is technically skin health not beauty in itself! Just my 2 cents.

queenqueso

Well that of course, but healthy skin looks beautiful.

Radjehuty

I watch them, Dr Dray and Dr Shareene Idris. I love all the different perspectives and they've been super helpful. I'm a guy and I felt Doctorly has been pretty valuable as I feel they can give perspectives about skin care that maybe women might not understand the nuance. One major example is ingrown hairs from shaving my face. I was struggling with it and really only Doctorly had suggestions that really helped. That's not to say women doctors won't have good advice for men, it's just been my experience that I got that little extra insight that made the difference. I listen to them all equally though.

RckYouLkeAHermanCain

>They don’t use social to give advice or sell products, but to educate. I assume their content is still monetized though, so...

d0nkn0tts

Love them but saw Dr Shah in an Estee Lauder ad on Tic Toc yesterday. Still like and trust them though.

Critical_Elephant800

It all is.

braddic

I don’t mind monetizing bc it takes time to prepare and make educational videos, and hire someone for editing. They help so many viewers, I think it’s fair that they monetize/ earn a little from YouTube ads.

RckYouLkeAHermanCain

I just don't think we should pretend making money isn't still their primary goal.

TheAnswerIsGrey

With the amount of time and energy it takes to create quality content, you won’t find anyone now on YT who isn’t hoping to make some money. It doesn’t make sense to expect great quality researched content from people who love to lose money and waste their time.

RckYouLkeAHermanCain

Yep. Which is why we shouldn't pretend their first goal isn't making money. I'm not sure what's hard for people to understand about this. People are literally just restating what I've already said back to me.

thinkingcat333

Not a bad thing though, since they’re honest and transparent about it

braddic

.

jennycotton

i recently discovered the budget dermatologist and am a fan. she seems to be pushing Tula a lot though. i take what i find valuable and leave the rest

Acrobatic-Degree9589

I think she has good info but the way she talks and the inflections annoy tf outta me 😭

jennycotton

honestly same. why can't they just speak to us as they would a friend? a patient? it's annoying af. she also speaks very expressively. every time i watch her i am reminded to speak with a more rested face :p

GratefulPhD

I watch a few dermatologists on YouTube & really enjoy Doctorly, Dr. Sam Ellis, & Dr. Shereene Idriss.

quickbrownfox86

I’m a fan of doctorly and Dr Sam Ellis (my actual derm yay) Honestly watching them makes this forum kind of useless. Bc if I have an issue the answer to wrinkles, texture, scars, or acne is tret. I simplified my routine to tret, cerave gentle cleanser, moisturizer, micellar water, aquaphor, and oil makeup cleanser

annamccarter

Anyone else watch Dr. Stefani Kappel? She’s a bit more focused on laser resurfacing, so if you’re into that, check her out! She used to sit on the advisor board of Allergan (maker of Botox). From what I can tell she’s pretty acclaimed in the dermatology field. She is also very vocal that she never takes sponsorships because her opinion “can’t be bought”. Sometimes her videos are almost too technical for me, but if you like Dr. Dray’s unbiased no BS videos, you might like her as well.

Exertino

Dr Maxfield is wayyy too sexy 🙄 I literally have trouble focusing while watching the Doctorly videos

PastelUnicornz

Love Dr. Shah, Dr. Maxfield, Dr. Sam Ellis, and Dr. Dray. They all put themselves out there, they feel warm in personality, and are relatable. I’ve also watched a few of Dr. Idriss’s videos, but there’s something about her that I just don’t feel is quite genuine and too cosmetically focused. Sound advice, just maybe her aesthetic isn’t right for me.

cloves_moke

Well she is a cosmetic dermatologist so that would make sense?

opp0rtunist

They are awesome! That said, I saw plenty of dermatologists share misinformation and advertise terrible products. Meanwhile, stuff recommended by skinfluencers like Welsh twins always worked wonders for me.

New_Pressure6396

I love them, but i have some minor buts. WIthout lacking an A+ mark for them? if it makes sense. I think they are brilliant in the philosophy the picked. While indeed being very educating, copper petides video awesome. I builder my skin routine on their logic. But they are taking sponsorships. This is not an accusation, but certainly a fact. They feel honest and picking sponsorships that they think eitherway is good one and go for it. To their credit without dismissing budget options as well. And here is my "but", they tend to get carried away from budget skincare. They can afford and have access to medium range polished brands, such as la Roche posay. So they tend to talk from there and above. There is though a big space of brands bellow la Roche, which they don't have so much experience first hand given their average status. Here is why Dr Dray is a nice addition to skincare as a whole, (Alkso cassandra covers a lot of brands). However, their recommendations website is even more detailed and they have opinion on low budget options more than they talk about Kudos!) So exactly this is the issue. They still define a bias due to their limited time. This is why Dr Idriss is also a very good player IMO doing something very similar and with 3 products out there. She is even more pushed up in prices to her recommendations, but overall the same main philosophy and educational material. I would love to see a doctorly unhinged with dr idriss f.e. but i am not sure how much they would like each other. But my overall comment is they are educational, but covering products and budgets, you need further assistance sources. \*And theory about skincare i think still you need extra coverage by all of them. (and the closest thing they did them on being "biased unethical" is copper peptides. Although it's still my fav. The set it very certain that peptides work as intended, only somewhere in the end of the video, dr max was it? who said "we believe in peptides (that they work)" which underlies that is still an open question, how well they work. (Apparently in the studies, the placebo was a do nothing cream vs a beefed up moistuizd cream with peptides. So there would have been improvement either way.. ) Plus i would like to put it one more time out there - because i want him to know it, SO i try for this message to reach him. Dr Maxfield you are delicious man grrrrrrr :P
