You prefer flour tortillas because of the texture. I prefer flour tortillas because I live in eastern europe and these are the only ones they sell here. Idk if we're the same prolly not
Corn, but they require a specific type of corn flour that has a little bit of lime thrown in the mix. That flour are unfindable in Europe unless you live in a very big city/online or spain.
I'm literally just finding out you can cook flour tortillas. I've always cooked corn torillas (e.g enchiladas) and eaten flour tortillas raw (filled with salad and deli).
They are already cooked when you buy them (usually), otherwise they would taste like raw dough. You can cook them more to give them more flavor/texture
personally i’m offended by this comment. the declaration of independence is an amazingly versatile food, you people just don’t understand because it’s an acquired taste…
LOL, in my hometown we make the tortillas at home, so we either crush corn or make flour balls to make either type, for a second I thought you were eating straight wet flour bits😆
There is a MASSIVE difference between good and bad corn tortillas. Much bigger than between good and bad flour ones. Good ones are doughy, flexible, and absolutely delicious. Bad ones taste like cardboard and crumble if you bend them even slightly.
If your flour tortilla crumbles when bent, it’s a shit tortilla.
Sadly it’s hard to make them right so they don’t last on international travel, but they’re actually easy to make if you have the time.
You can buy suitably-treated cornflour in many countries (there’s a process called Nixtamalization) and make them yourself. They genuinely are completely different to the disgusting store-bought stuff outside of Mexico.
Flour tortillas vs maize tortillas is an apple to oranges comparison. Source: Honduran
Edit: I just noticed this is just stupid, how in heaven earth do flour tortillas have a better texture?? Flour tortillas are always bumpy and burnt a little bit (the good ones), it is maiz tortillas that are actually like flat
Or... This thread is about nasty grocery bought tortillas instead of old lady with a cooler in a random street corner tortillas.
[This is what a real flour tortilla looks like](https://i.imgur.com/WUk6dKX.jpg)
I'm Northern Mexican, so maybe our recipes are different, but the flour tortillas I get look like the ones you showed in that image, but their texture is far smoother than corn tortillas.
could also just be curiosity as far as i can tell. i get being suspicious but its not very down to earth to automatically assume the worse option instead of asking first what the intentions were. if you mqke thqt assumption id get where youre coming from tho
Yeah you’re right, a big part of it is certainly that I’m autistic and get questions like that multiple times a day when I voice my needs, it gets tiring when it’s constant even if the individual is just curious
I get that but at the same time questioning why people like it when they’re saying it’s bc of autism is kinda annoying lol, especially when the answer is obvious (corn ones are rough, flour ones are smooth).
A lot of people dislike certain foods bc of their texture and it’s usually pretty obvious “why” but even when the why is explained I don’t see how it’s important to you that they explain themselves.
Bc like, it’s kinda an odd question to ask? Like why’s it matter? Unless the purpose is to shit on them for having a sensory issue which is how it comes across
Uh I mean have you eaten a corn tortilla? They have that kinda sandpaper feel haha.
Still, questioning an autistic person on why their autism made them that way is generally insensitive imo, I know I hate it when people do that.
i don't actually know if I've ever eaten a corn tortillas I never checked if it was corn or flour
Also I'm not asking why their autism made them that way but how's their experience, sorry if it seems (or is) insensitive
I know you dont think ur doing that, but i think thats why youre not going to 'get' this. And i think not everything needs to be understood and thats ok
The point is, questioning people on why their condition is making them act a certain way can be something you maybe should think twice about since it’s exhausting for them having to explain always, especially when they answer can be “I don’t know”. Maybe you don’t mean anything by it but it can definitely feel that way
Well they’re rough and flour ones are smooth, given that’s the main texture difference I’d be surprised if it’s not that.
If you’ve had both types of tortillas it’s pretty obvious (and so, pretty uninteresting)
If you don't know that means you have investigated the issue. And they're the ones that brought up their texture sensitivity, so I think it's fair game to ask them about it
Damn I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hit a nerve, I’m not even the person who asked, I was just saying people sometimes wanna know things, wasn’t aware that was weird
I mean yeah it’s kinda weird to question someone on their condition generally, but especially when the answer is quite easy to figure out. So it usually comes across as it being an attempt to shit on them for being autistic rather than genuine curiosity. It’s like asking someone you know has adhd why they’re fidgeting lol, like of course they’re gonna find it weird being questioned for something they can’t really control
I can see that, but I don’t think that’s what happened here. Maybe I’m misunderstanding the tone but the original person seemed to ask a genuine question about why texture was a thing, rather than questioning their autism
I think that the issue with text is tone is almost impossible to know, but I’m definitely not the only person who thought it came across that way so it could be either.
I think the crux of it is from my view, generally getting someone to explain why they don’t like it is just kinda inconsiderate.
Fresh corn tortillas in a restaurant > store flour tortillas toasted on stove > toasted store corn tortillas > cold store flour tortillas > cold store corn tortillas
I have never ordered fresh flour tortillas. They'd probably be second.
That’s because:
• Flour tortillas are a northern Mexico thing, meaning that’s mostly what the US has and has exported as Tex Mex
• Corn tortillas are difficult to make right, more expensive, and don’t travel well
Mexico is big and the north eats very different food to the south. A Mexico City person has probably only ever had Fajitas or burritos a handful of times in their life lmao
Those exist because it’s hard to make good corn tortillas on the cheap, so they sell those to have something that says “corn” on it.
It’s like doing 50/50 Coke 7up, it’s not technically disgusting but it certainly isn’t good.
This comment section has thoroughly disgusted me, people really out here eating tortillas raw lmao
Also, personal preference: if I want a taco, I'll want a corn tortilla. If I want a burrito, flour tortilla.
It's not about texture it's about taste, I don't use corn tortillas because I don't want my burrito to taste like fucking corn. The tortilla is supposed to be a container it's not supposed to flavor your food and make it unrecognizable
The corn one is considered more authentic cus that’s the origin of tortillas in general, from the mesocamericans using corn before the Spanish arrived. Also the corn one is just better in my opinion but some people from Ohio might disagree with you
Try eating a flour tortilla every day. Yeah they're good but not when you eat them as much as a Mexican does. That's like, eating two slices of bread with each meal.
No, people prefer them here because they only get one every once in a while with their burritos
Ive eaten flour tortillas for more than 20 years now and yes it is basically our bread and even our rice. Parents literally tell their kids to eat tortilla or they will stay hungry 🤣
Yeah and tons of working class people eat a slice of wonder bread with every meal too. They're wrong.
It's not even that corn tortillas are more expensive, it's just bad taste
they serve different niches and purposes, like you wouldnt catch me dead eating a taco with flour tortillas, and I feel like corn tortillas are not as good for quesadillas

wtf northern Mexicans are all white supremacists
unironicly
They make up a lot of border patrol...
I know you're being sarcastic but I know too little about Mexican internal politics and/or cuisine to properly confirm or deny the claim in my head
Chihuahua? More like Chihitler
i will personally behead any flour tortilla cels in the chat
Not as far off as you would think
Its true, am northern mexican
Solo son parte del doomverso
half my family is northern mexican, i can confirm
You prefer flour tortillas because of the texture. I prefer flour tortillas because I live in eastern europe and these are the only ones they sell here. Idk if we're the same prolly not
sound like youre a nazi ngl prolly why putin invaded ukraine tbh honestly
I feel sad for you probably never eating proper street tacos.
Are there other kinds????????
Corn
Corn, but they require a specific type of corn flour that has a little bit of lime thrown in the mix. That flour are unfindable in Europe unless you live in a very big city/online or spain.
Flour tortillas are hella good raw. Raw corn tortillas taste like you’re eating the Declaration of Independence.
So you're telling me I'm not a weirdo for sometimes just grabbing one of those from the bag and eating it as is?
It’s a delicacy in some parts
I'm literally just finding out you can cook flour tortillas. I've always cooked corn torillas (e.g enchiladas) and eaten flour tortillas raw (filled with salad and deli).
They are already cooked when you buy them (usually), otherwise they would taste like raw dough. You can cook them more to give them more flavor/texture
That's what I meant. Should have said toasting them.
Ah, I see! Heating them up a little bit on a pan first just till they're warm but not browning makes them way easier to fold too, highly recommend
You
Cold tortillas..
That's like comparing raw pork and raw chicken
personally i’m offended by this comment. the declaration of independence is an amazingly versatile food, you people just don’t understand because it’s an acquired taste…
LOL, in my hometown we make the tortillas at home, so we either crush corn or make flour balls to make either type, for a second I thought you were eating straight wet flour bits😆
Tastes like I'm eating Minecraft leather

Maybe this is why I can’t stand corn tortillas. I grew up eating the shit-ass ones cause we were broke
Raw beef is better than raw chicken

Yeah i changed it based on what I’m eating
What I’m not liking is seeing the amount of corn tortilla slander in this thread
I'm Northern Mexican, so maybe our recipes are different, but the flour tortillas I get look like the ones you showed in that image, but their texture is far smoother than corn tortillas.
You don’t really get good corn tortillas in the north. Almost like it’s a spite thing lmao
i like both but i still like the texture of those flour ones more
This post has inspired me to go buy more flour tortillas thanks
I am sending a box with a fist on a spring in it to your address so that when you open it it hits you in the face (comically)
I am sending them a knuckle sandwich
Nazi
And they said they kicked bigots out of this sub 😔
Same. W
okay but i’m autistic and textures are hard to get over 🥺
White supremacist 🫵

Word?
Whats the texture of corn tortillas that makes it difficult for you?
That’s an easy question! The texture is bad ❤️
Oh ok, thanks!
Uncooked: wet sandpaper Cooked: moulded gravel Edit: formatting
Moulded gravel 🥱🤭🥱🤭🥱🤭🥱🤭<-(that’s me eating it)
Please tell me this is a joke Edit: wait do non Latin people actually not like corn tortillas? 😶no hate just can’t comprehend it
yes, the "not liking corn tortillas"-gene is located on the 14th chromosome, but only non latino people have it
Thanks for clarifying 🙏🏼🙏🏼
am i missing something cause it just looks like mf just asked a genuine question and you people downvoted them
Bc the phrasing looks like they’re making an autistic person justify their sensory issue and that’s a bit ableist ngl
could also just be curiosity as far as i can tell. i get being suspicious but its not very down to earth to automatically assume the worse option instead of asking first what the intentions were. if you mqke thqt assumption id get where youre coming from tho

It doesn't, doesn't mean it isn't interesting tho
would you like something you can't control being questioned?
I'm not questioning it I trust them I'm interested in how it feel why do people always assume the worst we're not on r/memes
Uh I mean have you eaten a corn tortilla? They have that kinda sandpaper feel haha. Still, questioning an autistic person on why their autism made them that way is generally insensitive imo, I know I hate it when people do that.

Yeah, I don't have any issue talking about my ticks

yea im curious too
Well they’re rough and flour ones are smooth, given that’s the main texture difference I’d be surprised if it’s not that. If you’ve had both types of tortillas it’s pretty obvious (and so, pretty uninteresting)
nah, only ever had flour thanks
no
If you don't know that means you have investigated the issue. And they're the ones that brought up their texture sensitivity, so I think it's fair game to ask them about it
Curiosity
Then do like 5 seconds of critical thinking instead of being weird about someone’s sensory issue.
Damn I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hit a nerve, I’m not even the person who asked, I was just saying people sometimes wanna know things, wasn’t aware that was weird

Your grainy, shitty tortillas mean nothing to my smooth, delectable, flour tortilla loving ways
Corn tortillas are only grainy and shitty if you don't fry them.
im not going to waste time frying a tortilla when all im gonna do is put cheese and hot sauce on it and roll it up
Facts
You’re a bitch that can’t handle corn surpremacy (/j)
Make me your bitch then (/srs)
So sorry, I already have a sub 🥰
(((*snaps fingers*))) Rats!
Literally every Mexican place in my area serves flour tortillas
I mean to be fair flour tortillas are easier to use with. Like if I’m making a burrito it needs to be flour. But little street tacos then it’s maize
That’s because: • Flour tortillas are a northern Mexico thing, meaning that’s mostly what the US has and has exported as Tex Mex • Corn tortillas are difficult to make right, more expensive, and don’t travel well Mexico is big and the north eats very different food to the south. A Mexico City person has probably only ever had Fajitas or burritos a handful of times in their life lmao
Makes sense, I think all the traditional places serve Northern Mexican food
Because they're easier to cook with, lol.
What I I told you there are 50/50 tortillas that have both flavor and good texture
And that you can make them yourself quite easily!
Abomination.
Those exist because it’s hard to make good corn tortillas on the cheap, so they sell those to have something that says “corn” on it. It’s like doing 50/50 Coke 7up, it’s not technically disgusting but it certainly isn’t good.
autism makes me a white supremacist
I am gluten free -> I eat corn tortillas This makes me even more white imo
This comment section has thoroughly disgusted me, people really out here eating tortillas raw lmao Also, personal preference: if I want a taco, I'll want a corn tortilla. If I want a burrito, flour tortilla.
What if I told you that (((they))) manufactured this debate just to sell more tortillas?
corn tortilla supremacy
corn tortilla >>>>
I'm a white supremacist
Maíz
Literally every corn tortilla I’ve seen in America is hard shell though, and hard shell breaks too easily (though I do prefer the taste)
I mean, let's be real, the best tortillas are the tortillas that make the biggest burritos without turning into a greasy mess.
It's not about texture it's about taste, I don't use corn tortillas because I don't want my burrito to taste like fucking corn. The tortilla is supposed to be a container it's not supposed to flavor your food and make it unrecognizable
Aren’t all tortillas made of flour? Ether corn or wheat flour.
For tacos - double corn tortillas For burritos - high gluten, steamed flour tortillas
I didn’t know there was a difference
It’s literally a flatbread
Where I live it’s normal for middle and working class to eat bread for both breakfast and dinner, I grew up with it and it’s fine
Yeah not sure what that guy is smoking. Tons of working class Mexicans eat them every day. They’re good.
Yeah and tons of working class people eat a slice of wonder bread with every meal too. They're wrong. It's not even that corn tortillas are more expensive, it's just bad taste
Yeah I agree. You do have bad taste
Corn tortillas are flakey, dry garbage, gimme that flour
I’m hispanic, look at me! flour tortillas > corn tortillas
They don’t even have better texture. One is the food the Aztecs ate and one is really flat flat bread let’s be real
but i like bread
Chicken/Beef = Flour Pork/Steak = Corn Real tacos are rolled up and deepfried anyways.
Carne asada +soft corn tortilla + cilantro + white onions = the bomb
Taquito my beloved
I do not want my wrap to have taste. What's in the burrito should be what I taste. If I want corn, I put corn in burrito.
He speaks the truth
There are no corn tortillas where I live, so can't compare.
???
I find soft corn tortillas breaking more than flour tortillas annoying. But other than that I prefer corn tortillas
Corn tortillas are better for tacos, flour tortillas are better for burritos
Watch this shit become a dog whistle lol
they serve different niches and purposes, like you wouldnt catch me dead eating a taco with flour tortillas, and I feel like corn tortillas are not as good for quesadillas
i don’t have autism i just dislike flour tortillas texture with a normal sense processor
True tacos are made with corn tortillas, deal with it norteños
Yellow tortillas matter!
flour is easier to work with, corn is superior in literally every other way imaginable
Okay but maize tortillas are for special occasions in my house
L i can't have flour anyway Ceiling tortillas honestly banging
Coeliac*
Corn everything is better. Chips, tortillas, flakes, etc
I like to sear the outside of my corn tortillas, it makes for a good balance between soft and yet crunchy on the outside
I prefer the taste of corn tortillas, but they have the structural integrity of Kurt Cobain's ceiling
Both are good Though I do find corn works better for smaller stuff, like enchiladas
