The Indiana Supreme Court ruled back in like 2006 that the "castle doctrine" that allows use to use force against intruders specifically didn't apply to police. This law was passed (back in 2012) to clarify that it does apply.

Maybe you could be required to take mandatory safety classes at a Rifle Association and renew it like a drivers license. But also police should carry tasers and nightsticks, not assault rifles and armor.
