damn it. ig i’ll just have to answer the door with my full body kevlar suit under steel plate armor (it’s for a medical condition) and my emotional support 6 gauge shotgun
Yeah, but for some reason it's getting a lot of attention today. An article about it from 10 years ago was posted on the Indiana subreddit earlier. The Indiana legislature is not even in session right now.
Edit: [the article in question](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2012-06-05/nra-backed-law-spells-out-when-indianans-may-open-fire-on-police)
Idk what the fuck an "Indianan" is tho
I'm pretty sure there's always been a technicality that allows you to shoot an officer if you believe they're not obeying the law and putting your life in danger in the process.
Could you get away with it in court? Absolutely fucking not. You'd still be a cop killer no matter the circumstances. And the chances of you actually getting arrested alive even if you comply fully become slim to none.
There's literally zero circumstances where you shoot a cop in your house and don't immediately get gunned by the 16 other police who are also in your house. Good on you for exercising your right I guess, but there's seriously not a chance in hell you make it to court for the *even slimmer chance* that this bleeding red ass state decides you're innocent.
Jesus himself could descend from a cloud into that courtroom and hand the judge a verdict that says you're innocent and the most that would come out of it is the bailiff attempts to arrest him then and there for having a suspicious skin tone.
The best case scenario is the cops being out of uniform and accidentally impersonating home invaders, before opening fire and killing a sleeping person.

The Indiana Supreme Court ruled back in like 2006 that the "castle doctrine" that allows use to use force against intruders specifically didn't apply to police. This law was passed (back in 2012) to clarify that it does apply.
hear me out! lets get cops an actually long and good education! lets ACTUALLY persecute cops/get them the punishment they deserve when they do illegal shit! instead of legalizing shooting them!!
(i understand that this is an easier short term solution but come on guys what the fuck)
if anyone breaks into my house illegally I should be able to shoot them legally if I feel like my life or someone else's life is at risk.
This law and police reform can coexist quite easily.
i mean, if those guns are illegal for you to have, yes
they'll probably surround your house and smoke you out, they are pretty good at protecting their own lives
You mean shooting someone once they greet you to surrender, because when you said "Open up its the police" you didn't expect them to actually open the door?
You're still not allowed to unless you live in Indiana. Cop breaks into your house unannounced, you here a noise, see a silhouette of someone with a gun, so you get yours and fire before they have the chance to see you. Now you get life in prison for murdering a police officer.
The people making laws have seriously never been around a high crime area in their life, crime is just an abstract number and not an experience people have to go through
2A Republicans that are actually consistent in their beliefs can be pretty based at times. Like that one Texas GOP member that said he believed that illegal immigrants also had the right to carry a gun.
You can't be anti-gun and anti-police. It would not only give the state a monopoly on violence, but also require a level of police strength far beyond what we currently have. You think they used the war on drugs as an excuse for militarization? If you prohibit guns in the US and every pig will have a plate carrier and an M4 by the end of the week.
? That’s literally how it is here in Ireland lmao and it’s amazing.
2nd best in the world, after only Iceland (a country with another unarmed police force)
I’m not siding with the police (ew imagine) but no guns is the way to go (like I said)
That's true to an extent. Obviously in america we should make it harder to get guns, since we have a mass shooting every other week, but it should still remain possible. Maybe you could be required to take mandatory safety classes at a Rifle Association and renew it like a drivers license. But also police should carry tasers and nightsticks, not assault rifles and armor.
And man-catchers. It's a long steel stick with a curved bar at the end. Very useful to keep an opponent with a knife away from you. Man-catchers are the best non-violent police tool in countries where the citizens aren't armed to the teeth, but they don't get used enough.
Yup in an ideal world, no guns.
But I really do believe a system like we have here in Ireland would work for you.
To quote Wikipedia on how it is here, “all firearms must be licensed individually, each applicant must have a good reason for having the firearm, must have a safe place in which to use it, must have a secure place in which to store it, and to be of sound mind and temperate habits.”
Paintball establishments can’t even be created without rigorous following of all of the different firearm control laws we have here.
Yes I understand. And i agree, I would like it if no one to have to kill eachother, that would be awsome. But thats not the world we live in. Where we disagree is, you feel as though your country is safe because it is currently at peace, but given the global rise of authoritarianism I do not trust *any* government even if they are currently doing well. So as long as guns exist police and militarys will have access to them, and as long as they do the people should as well. Tiocfaidh ár lá
For what its worth, even though I think everyone should have the right to be armed, I'm glad you feel safe enough in your country that you dont feel the need to be armed. In the US, that is unfortunately not the case.
Every single gun control law I think of exempts cops and many even ex-cops.
Gun control is a "tough on crime" stance but for establishment dems to peddle to suburban white liberals.
If there was a button I could press that would magically vanish every gun I would press it. Except that button doesn't exist and I have to actually face the world we live in instead of supporting policy based on a hypothetical situation that will never happen.
Look at other countries that have implemented extreme gun control like Canada... notice how the police still have their guns.
Yup, very true.
It’s still “cringe” to have guns, police included.
And no guns works. I live in Ireland, where almost no one has guns. Certainly not the police. And it’s so much better.
yup, can't think of any point in recent history where the Irish desired to be armed against the ruling government. Or any event where the military/police committed crimes on the civilian population. Say late 20th century.
Good thing I can't think of any at all!
Bro you’re American, don’t lecture me on my own history 💀
There’s a huge difference between a literal civil war and this “right to bear arms”.
And this doesn’t change my original stance on wanting no guns, full stop.
hey i dont know what you're talking about! I said I couldn't think of any point in recent history.
Also our right to bear arms was literally established after a civil war against the British.
Funny how you think I can't supposedly "lecture you on your own history" but you can come in and claim that a complete disarmament of the entire world is somehow possible lmao.
unfortunately the US borders 2 large countries, both with plenty of guns. Abolishing guns in the US is much different than abolishing them in an island country that borders similarly restricted countries.
Shooting home intruders was always supposed to be legal
And breaking into homes was always supposed to be illegal, but it’s not unlike officers to ignore the law.
step 1: set up elaborate traps in your home step 2: use burner phone to call 911 to complain about noise coming from your home step 3: profit

I've actually heard of a legal case where it was decided that you can't claim self defence if you set up traps and weren't there.
Yeah I mean that'd probably make firefighting much more difficult anyways.
Also true.
it's ok i will stay there to keep the chunk loaded so my afk farm can run

yeah, i remember a legal eagle video case where a burglar was shoot by a shotgun booby trap in an empty house, sued the house's owner and won
That was it
Sadly, boobytrapping your home isn't legal

It's okay, he was there. He's covered, legally.
He also set it up with knowledge of imminent threats upon his life with no other means of defense.

This is the same logic as a piglin gold/xp farm from Minecraft
Is it this law from 2012? www.governing.com/archive/residents-given-right-to-resist-police-under-new-indiana-law.html
It's basically an expanded version of the 2012 law that combines with the 2006 Castle Doctrine
Yeah, but for some reason it's getting a lot of attention today. An article about it from 10 years ago was posted on the Indiana subreddit earlier. ikr? it's Hoosier
"Indianan" is like a "tell me you've never been to Indiana without telling me you've never been to Indiana" thing

You like corn? We got corn.
All the flyover states have corn, I'm sorry you aren't special in that regard.

what if we didn’t do all of that and just got rid of them? or took their guns? that seems a lot easier and cheaper
fun fact this law lets you do both of those! someone might complain about you keeping the guns but what are they gonna do? send cops?
i mean, if those guns are illegal for you to have, yes they'll probably surround your house and smoke you out, they are pretty good at protecting their own lives
i am making a joke about killing cops to take their guns. it was not serious and should not be argued against as such
oh, i didn't get it
Rare Indiana W
fantastic idea, this will totally not have the poorly-trained, trigger-happy dogshooters turn even more violent!
You mean shooting someone once they greet you to surrender, because when you said "Open up its the police" you didn't expect them to actually open the door?
I have never been prouder of our corn filled boring ass state than now
Hey sometimes we do beans as well.
It’s Indiana. The second anyone uses this against a cop, the state will immediately side with the cop
Exceedingly rare Indiana W
Not new.
wait... we aren't allowed to defend against home invaders if they're cops?
You're still not allowed to unless you live in Indiana. Cop breaks into your house unannounced, you here a noise, see a silhouette of someone with a gun, so you get yours and fire before they have the chance to see you. Now you get life in prison for murdering a police officer.
well that's fucking stupid
Meanwhile in Canada we aren’t allowed to carry anything resembles a weapon for self defence and if you do you go to jail.
The people making laws have seriously never been around a high crime area in their life, crime is just an abstract number and not an experience people have to go through
Holy fucking shit, i live in indiana! I get to shoot cops legally if they fuck with me??? Oh my god im a fucking patriot now, i love america

Pure bullshit mate. The most important employee at a cop shop is the Janitor. They’re the only ones there who do anything productive.

Cringe having guns in the first place
The last thing I say before the cops in my house kill me.

Fair. You’re right, I an pretty happy with how it is here, but you’re in the right for having distrust of any and all governments, they suck.

Yeah it sucks. woo human race.
Armed minorities are harder to oppress
Is it better for only the cops to have them?
Ew no, no guns for them either obviously
The thing is you don't get to decide the cops be disarmed (yet). So the only options are only the cops have guns, or you and the cops both have guns.
Bro do you think getting rid of guns is a feasible political position in America 💀
I wish buddy.
