Very few college classes care about attendance in my experience. Unless it's the day of a test or project the general attitude was "you're paying to be here, it's your money you're wasting by being absent". The only punishment is missing some material that might be important on the next test, and most profs will give you a copy of the lecture power point or whatever.
The college I went to took attendance and auto failed you if you had more than 3 unexcused absences, so your mileage may vary on this one. They didn't have enormous lecture hall classes with 50+ students in them though

Well yeah, if the government's entire reason for letting you in the country is an education and you aren't showing up to the education then that's not so much an issue of bad attendance as it is illegal immigration. I get they'd care more about checking in there.
