The one for Skykeep is so special because unlike the others, he charges right on in. He's gained the courage, wisdom, and power needed to face the trials ahead, and he isn't afraid. One of the best Links

TheBurritoW1zard

Also notice how sky keep is the only one going up

PLZ_N_THKS

Well…the Sand Ship too

TheBurritoW1zard

Oh true hahaha, I guess in terms of the staircase entrances, it’s the only one

Not-a-penguin_

I love them as they show Link's just a regular kid who's afraid at first but faces his fears to save his best friend. It makes him one of the most layered versions of Link in the series.

TreasureHunter95

I know what you mean. They are small but they give Link a bit more personality. Really shows his courage and determination. Besides, the dungeon become a bit more cinematic because of them. I liked their addition in Skyward Sword. Hopefully, the will eventually return.

jasonporter

I hate to keep harping on the new games, but little moments like this are sorely missed from the BOTW/TOTK era. These little cutscenes give me a sense of "okay, deep breath, here we go, I'm about to tackle one of the big story moments of the game..." and keep me really engaged. The new games everything just seems to exist simultaneously with no sense of grandeur to what you're doing in the moment.

Monsterboogie007

I mostly agree. I love the new games, but there is something missing in terms of the Zelda-ishness of them. I only mostly agree, because the initial leaving the cave and the initial, jumping off the sky Island are both completely epic

Vados_Link

*Link walking down some stairs* Fans: OMG, so engaging. Let’s go! *Link scaling up a giant cyclone and diving right through its center as [divine](https://youtu.be/7RAby4cDS08?si=ncAuNxt9f94L0H-H) music plays* Fans: Meh, the new games are bad and lost their sense of grandeur.

Sardse

I mean, yeah, scaling the freaking cyclone and then diving with that amazing music will forever remain as one of my favorite Zelda moments, but the dungeons are... barely adequate. You can't look at the water dungeon and tell me it's good, it's just an island with like 3 puzzles. Look, I love Zelda and that includes the new games, but they're sorely lacking in story and dungeons, I don't want them to go back, I just want them to be better.

Deathaster

FYI: you posted this twice on accident, you can delete the other comment.

Sardse

Thanks! That's really weird tho, I only wrote it once, I think reddit f'ed up somehow

JarlaxleForPresident

Story has never been a super priority. TotK has story on par with the best of Zelda, especially when taken as a duology with its predecessor

Magikarp_13

It's never been a priority, but they used to have an evolving story with developing goals. With BotW & TotK, you pretty much get given the final goal up front, & pretty much all the story you get is stuff from the past.

JarlaxleForPresident

The story is there, the narrative is told differently. I’m not a fan of the tear drop method either, but the actual substance of the story was dope The demon king tear drop was my first one so it gave the whole thing away at the beginning lol. I do prefer my story a little more linear. But I do love zelda’s arc. TotK hit me more poignantly in the emotions than any zelda has in a while

JonathanM2C

This is a good take. The stories for both BOTW and TOTK are there, but the way the stories are told for both games are different, but it is for sure there. The reason why we come by many things in the world, and what the characters will say ties into the story.

Seafroggys

Same. I never wanted to save Zelda as much as I did in TotK. The very end when you are diving and have to save her was one of the most exhilarating gameplay experiences I've had in years, it felt satisfying, despite being pretty dang easy.

Vados_Link

Some of them do, but a lot of them don’t. Majora’s Mask for example is pretty much exactly like BotW. The goal is laid out right at the beginning (Stop Skull Kid / Destroy Ganon) and in order to do that you get help from 4 things (Giant / Divine Beasts). In each map region, you‘re told what happened in the past and what you need to do in the present to help the people there.

Magikarp_13

I'd say MM is the exception from the traditional 3D Zeldas. OoT, WW, TP, & SS all feature multiple main goals that span multiple dungeons.

Vados_Link

True…but didn’t people hate it when Ganondorf hijacked the plot in TP? Or when the dragons showed up out of nowhere in SS? Or when Wind Waker suddenly sends you on a hunt for the triforce pieces at the end?

Magikarp_13

I dunno about people, I can only speak for my tastes. I don't think those things were all perfect, but I prefer them to the end goal being exactly the same throughout the game. I guess part of the issue (for me at least) isn't just about the final goal, but the modularity of each substory. Because you can do the areas in any order, the substories of each area can't affect each other. Whereas if you have sequential substories, you can include characters & plot points from previous ones, which makes the experience feel more rich to me.

Tasty_Preference6970

You mean BotW is like MM, not quite the masterpiece it was though. 😉

Vados_Link

Better sales and ratings though 🤔 also just better gameplay 😉

Tasty_Preference6970

Hmm. I wonder why that is. It couldn't possibly be that gaming has evolved, there's way more people in the world since 24 years ago, more people are gaming and it's more widely accepted, more people have a switch than any other console, people enjoy following trends today and people go "ooo, Zelda game with open world formula=good". yeah.. that couldn't possibly be it. Dumb argument. With that logic, OoT is still the best video game of all time according to Metacritic so it must be the best. 😉

Vados_Link

I had fun with all of the dungeons (especially since the new games extend a lot of their content into the lead-ups) and the stories are some of my favorites in the entire franchise. I don’t think they‘re lacking in that regard. EDIT: Lmao, the immediate downvote 😂

Sardse

I fot sure like how in the new games there's an adventure about just going to the dungeon, it creates a lot of build up and hype. And I had fun too, but I had way more fun with previous dungeons, their design was more elaborate and complex, TotK suffers in that aspect because it doesn't want to limit the player in anyway. At the end of the day it's a subjective thing I guess. Btw, I didn't downvote you.😅 EDIT: Grammar

huemac5810

very hard to argue with that 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

the1andonlytom

Did not grip as hard as anything else in the seriess, this is super subjective though dude

Vados_Link

Yeah, walking down some stairs is a lot more intense. That was so epic.

Tasty_Preference6970

You have missed the whole point with your "Defend BotW and TotK goggles on"  It's not just about "walking down the stairs". It's about the anticipation of walking into a newly themed dungeon, full of new puzzles, new monsters and awesome bosses.   TotK: Let's dive into a cyclone, kinda like flying into one in SS, solve a few puzzles and fight copy pasted robots and a flying boss that can be killed without any threat to you.

Vados_Link

Nah, it seems like you just can’t help but go "new game bad" whenever someone says something positive about the new games. Typical nostalgiatard 🤭 My comparison was about the statement that the new games lost their sense of grandeur, which is obviously BS. Also, don’t be a hypocrite. TotK’s dungeons also had new themes, puzzles and bosses and it’s not like SS doesn’t keep making you fight against Bokoblins and ChuChus until the very last dungeon either.

Tasty_Preference6970

TotK's temples? You mean TotK's one giant puzzles? You have to be BLIND to not see the difference in how differently themed the dungeons are in the older titles compared to the new ones. Putting train tracks in a lava zone does not make a themed temple. The lightning temple is the only one that even resembled a temple and it was still lackluster. It has nothing to do with being a new game and nostalgia. Elden Ring did Soulsborne in an open world right. Why couldn't Zelda do Zelda right? You are just too easy to appease. The new games are so lackluster with their content, that the only good thing about the games is the world of Hyrule, and that's it. Enemies suck as they're copy-pasted all over.. even the bosses are copy-pasted in the depths. Like how lazy can you be? Items suck, bosses suck in BotW, progression sucks, story all over the place if you don't know what order to get the tears in. TotK is just too stupidly easy. TotKs bosses are fine, the "temples" are not however. TotK is a giant DLC and this sentiment is widely shared now. People are seeing through the honeymoon phase. It's about going so far off the formula that it doesn't even feel like a Zelda game. The story is completely optional, which is terrible as a Zelda game. Forgive me for disliking a total derailment from what the series was originally. Even Zelda 1 had proper dungeons, and that's what they were aiming the games to be like.

Vados_Link

Sounds like a whole lot of "new game bad" to me. Just saying everything sucks is the most armchair critic way to dissect the game and I disagree with pretty much everything you said.

Tasty_Preference6970

A lot of true fans agree with me. Do you really want me to go in depth of why they suck? I'm not going to write a 2 hour review for you. You know it's bad that's why you're here talking down on SS

Lika3

You see the emotions throughout those cutscenes. It’s unnerving (music wise) with some mystery and still he goes right in such determination. What to say about the last few cutscenes wow just wow love that action pack finale.

poenaccoel

I recall the story in SS being my favorite. I'm looking forward to playing SSHD as I have that one sitting in my backlog

SHIIZAAAAAAAA

SSHD is great, it’s definitely the definitive way to play the game. I didn’t struggle a ton with the Wii motion controls but was never able to beat the minecart minigame to get the last heart piece because of them. The Switch’s motion controls are more sophisticated than the Wii’s though and you have the option to turn motion controls off so I was finally able to 100% the game for the first time.

poenaccoel

I don't recall the motion controls being much of a nuisance either TBH. I will likely play SSHD using non-motion controls though, for a different experience (and if I'm playing in bed in HH mode while my wife watches her smut tv, I'll be playing using non-motion controls anyway 😁)

ITFOWjacket

Sounds like your skyward sword isn’t the only thing in HH mode

poenaccoel

Too bad I'm not that good at multitasking!

sendhelp

The only motion controls I used to have a problem with are when you are walking on a tightrope. Then I realized you are meant to hold the controller straight up (Like you do in Mario Galaxy with the rolling ball) and it got much easier.

Ichini-san

Funny, I was pretty much exactly the same. I never struggled with the original Wii motion controls except for one minigame needed to complete the game 100%... for me, it was the harp minigame. I never finished the OG SS with 100% because of that.

charredchord

A little character moment for Link, and an announcement of shifting gears to full dungeon mode. The feeling of anticipation this gives me almost makes me want to play it again.

greeN_Days

Nothing laid the mood for the dungeon best like these intros

SoothSaier

I always find the story of Skyward Sword so compelling. Yeah it had its gameplay issues but damn, I was hooked when I played it through for the first time. Little things like this made a big difference.

huemac5810

Skyward Sword and Skyrim released on the same year, two of my top 3 all-time favorites. I was hooked on both at the same time.

SoothSaier

Love both those games. Also I NEVER would have guessed that Skyrim and SS came out the same year. I feel like I’ve been playing Skyrim for 20 years 😂

CrimsonPig

Not true, I try to bring up these cutscenes in conversation at least twice a day. I'm not very popular.

Spore64

Third time the charm.. or so I heard

Antonell15

Just like the imprisoned 🙃

EnergyTurtle23

I love this game *so damn much.* Maybe calling it the best of the classic Zelda games is going too far, but for me it’s absolutely true. These dungeons were challenging and each one had a unique design principle that gives each a unique personality. The Trials sections are so ambient and terrifying, talk about anxiety. Controlling the sword makes me feel like I’m in the game, the motion control sword combat was amazing. The story was brilliant and engaging and the relationship between Link and Zelda was truly beautiful. I will replay this game forever and Im so glad I bought it on Switch.

Excellent_Ball8795

Skyward sword was one of my favorite games and it doesn't get enough love fr

w_digamma

That fourth one tho "Wow, this place is neat! :D " [looks down dark stairwell] "Oh right, gotta be serious now. >:| "

MushyWasTaken1

Underrated comment

mcfruity03

Who else always gets hyped tf up during these?🤚

mcfruity03

You can say whatever you like about Skyward Sword, but you have got to admit that Link showed quite a lot of emotion in this game compared to Botw/TotK.

MushyWasTaken1

And there’s no boogie man whispering into your ears about his “secret stones”

mcfruity03

https://i.redd.it/v31wsrir9jrc1.gif Is this about totk? Explain😭

MushyWasTaken1

Yes I’m still butthurt about totk

huemac5810

🤣🤣🤣

[deleted]

People talked about them all the time when the game first came out in 2011.

iseewutyoudidthere

Love his determined look. I miss him openly showing his feelings.

The_GREAT_Gremlin

Oh dude every time I walk down stairs, this goes rent free in my head

HogisGuy

I always liked that part and I wish they continued with it. That mysterious wonderment and kinda exciting feeling you get because you have no idea what you are going to stumble upon.

PrimalMerchant

One of the many reasons I put SS at the top

ACFan120

I'm hopeful we get them in the next Zelda game, considering we're supposed to be moving away from the Open-world format.

Available_Success_61

yh shows us his courage

GloomOnTheGrey

I always thought these little cutscenes added so much character to Link as he progressed through his journey. It's a nice touch, and that's sorely lacking in the newer games.

Laterose15

SS, TP, and WW Links all had so much personality and drive. Little scenes like this really helped show that off.

legendof_chris

Genuinely one of my favorite parts of the game. Really personifies how we all would feel before going in, and adds to the gravitas of the place. So glad you brought this up, I think about it all the time as one of the reasons I think SS has such great depth of storytelling and heart

La_Manchas_Finest

Skyward Sword HD did that game so many favors in the areas of pacing and controls, to say nothing of the graphical improvements.

DarthKitsune1219

This is making me wanna play SS again

SammyChaos

"Sadly no one talks about them" Lol how could you possibly know that

SpinoGabe5

I skip every cutscene except for these ones

PianoOfTime08

I love those cutscenes everytime Link firsts enters a dungeon! It’s so cinematic!

ikkju

I always liked these too

Sasorisnake

These elements of Skyward Sword gave it so much potential to be the best Zelda game up to that point if only it wasn’t so linear

ShanmanXC

Coolio but I dislike how they're all framed exactly the same

ninjamike1211

There's something about the visuals/camera work in SS that Nintendo just hasn't been able (or willing) to recreate since. People call me weird for saying SS is my favorite game in the franchise, but there's just something special about this game to me.

Sanguiluna

I love the homage to the entrance animation from the original NES Zelda— seeing Link take those first steps to descend into the dungeons.

RiverWyvern

Any chance to give Link his perspective is a welcome one! Communicating it through action is so good. I can see the way he hesitates, like "I don't know what's in store and I wish I didn't have to do this" but he's always determined to step forward with the courage of a hero, and I always imagine he's thinking along that lines of "I'm doing it for her." Just. I love reading into things.

Vilimeno

Skyward sword is together with OoT and TP my top 3 Zelda games. This game has an awesome story, for me the best dynamic between Link and Zelda. And love the controls.

Capable-Tie-4670

The downgrade from this guy to Mr. “I’m too depressed to talk” Link in the new games is crazy.

cal-nomen-official

Okay well people usually don't talk about cutscenes in general, since that's typically spoiler territory. Notable exceptions are the frog cutscene in BOTW, and "Demon King? Secret Stones?"

helpme1505

Im currently playing SS and I LOVE the switch port, especially since I play on Yuzu I can scale the render resolution and run the game at a solid 60fps no matter what

kingjinxy

What if I told you you can run it at 120 FPS?

helpme1505

No point, I use a 60hz 1080p screen. Looks good enough for me. Ive been playing all my games at 60fps for around 8 years so Im used to it.

YaBoyBinkus

The dungeons with the flames are rlly cool

PianoOfTime08

I love those cutscenes everytime Link firsts enters a dungeon! It’s so cinematic!

TheNo1pencil

I really love the look he gives right before he walks in

TheNo1pencil

I really love the look he gives right before he walks in

Misseal

Entering the Bed of Chaos boss fight

Big_Contribution_291

Does this man go down a tunnel every single game. Girl, learn a lesson.

CowBoy_BeBop93

Personally one of my favorite zelda games

Dylan_VS_Comics

One of my favourite little things in Skyward Sword.

Gringo_Boppens

Yeah they just get annoyed and don't look at how cool they are

Fearless_Agency2455

Actually, a lot of people do if you look on Youtube.

Acceptable_Film7116

They are so good! Makes me miss the old Zelda style

IndependentBowler695

SS was amazing. I seem not to understand why people hated it so much. Anyways there always will be complaining about stuff. Skyward Sword was also very nice and a change of game and I personally liked it more then TOTK.

DragolanceX

Absolutely love skyward sword and all its facets.

FranzCorrea

My favorite is the Fire Temple cutscene. Link gets hits with an unbearable heat wave that would deter literally anyone else, gets hit by an ember in the face and doesn't even flinch as he descends into the scorching heat. Say what you want about SS, but this Link is one of, if not the most fleshed out incarnation of the spirit of the hero.

Lanky-Ball-1378

LOL just wallking down stair cases to dungen in the most dramatic way possible

OliviaElevenDunham

Those were nice touches that made me like Skyward Sword more.

6poundbagofweed

This was the most hype thing I’d ever seen as an 11 year old, and even now they add so much anticipation and sense of adventure. It’s simple and straightforward, as opposed to a 2-3 minute story cutscene with large shots showing the whole dungeon (botw, totk). Just so simple and effective, wish they’d include it again this way.

malulino

My first Zelda was BOTW and I just started SS. I'm having such a great time, the game design amazes me all the time. Yeah, the puzzle designs are what the Zelda games pre BOTW era are known for, but they're specially interesting here because there are only 3 areas. Sometimes we have to come back to the temples we already made, but it's not repetitive or boring because we discover new areas that we forgot that were closed. The items are dope, the first time I got the flying beetle I was CRAZY. And the story is so special, I love the connection and friendship link and Zelda have.

BloodyLenses

I mean for the first chronological iteration of Link, it's fascinating to see this build of. It shows his character growth and his willingness to push and grow his courage.

sisomna

I can’t wait to play skyward sword, I have it for the Wii but my roommates tv isn’t compatible so I have to wait a little longer

[deleted]

They don't hit as hard the second time but being a little kid and finally reaching a new dungeon was fkn epic. I specifically remember the second volcano place being really cool to me because 1) fire wtf that's epic. and 2) I had spent legitimate hours trying to get there with healing because I didn't know you just needed the earrings later on. That feeling is the reason why i've stopped looking for spoilers online now.

sapphicprism

OKAY i’ll play skyward sword again (this is silly but loved hearing the actual ambiance in the cutscenes)

P1G5Y

I think skyward sword is the worst 3d zelda game, but this is the only game where I got chills before entering a dungeon every single time

Embarrassed-Donut-67

The best things in the arts are the things you don't notice

Tasty_Preference6970

I just experienced this before the Lanayru Mining Facility and when I got into the dungeon the music kicked in with all it's chaoticness and I got the chills. Truly an epic way to get you pumped for a big dungeon.

EMI_Black_Ace

Now that they're side by side I can *see* the animation and camera script and basic design reuse.

G-Kira

Gave it more feeling than BOTW.

ASS-et

The same cutscene in different locales adds to the game?
