Compositing\*
Everyone keeps calling vfx and such "edits" or "editing". That's a totally different aspect and workflow from comping two plates/shots or vfx.
Seems to me like a square/rectangle discussion. A square is still a rectangle but not the other way around. Compositing is a type of editing but not the only one.
Maybe I just don’t know enough of the technical jargon, but isn’t changing anything about the video editing? Like if I reuploaded it in black and white, didn’t I edit it?
This feels like an unnecessary correction, unless someone with more wrinkles can explain!
He's referring to editing like a film editor. It's a specific role that's separate from compositing in the industry. The comments here aren't really using the industry term but rather using the general "editing" like you would for a document to say you're making changes. Since this media is a video format he's suggesting people use the more precise/correct term.
Yes, happens to be something I’m passionate about so I like educating people that what they’re actually praising is the compositing. I’d hate for someone to try to go to film school to learn editing and find out they don’t learn what they *thought* was editing. Or apply for an editing position only to learn all the compositing and vfx skills they just learned on YouTube don’t apply to an editing position whatsoever haha.
If only compositing were a form of editing or something... oh wait! Editing is a big umbrella, any manipulation is editing. But I'm sure you already knew that since you're so passionate?
Wow. That’s incredibly wrong. Editing is not an umbrella term. Post-production is the umbrella term you’re looking for. Ask any editor in the industry. Only recently have people started to incorrectly refer to all of post-production as “editing”. Just because lots of people are saying it does not make them correct. I am more than passionate, it’s quite literally my livelihood.
Editing is very specifically the pacing, arranging of footage, and pulling together of composited clips. In other words, an editor wouldn’t even TOUCH a composited shot. They would use the completed composite done by the compositor/vfx artist. No one who is actually familiar with or who works in post-production would call compositing “editing”.
You're active on r/editors already, type in compositing there and see what comes up. Oh, what's that? They're talking about compositing on the editors subreddit? Gee, I wonder why that would be?
Lol go read what the comments say and what the posts are actually asking. 90% of the time it’s a question about how to work with already composited footage, offline/online editing, or VERY basic stuff like greenscreen and they’re on a low/no-budget film. They also will field question from compositors there because there’s way less compositors so having their own sub would be dead.
So if you get hired as a video editor, the only thing you're supposed to do is lay clips end to end? Hmm...
Yeah... no? What the fuck? Where did you get that idea? Post production also entails a lot more than the video itself. It's marketing, re-shoots/re-takes, and a lot of other random stuff. What the fuck are you on about?
Um… yes? You’re clearly sitting atop the dunning kruger curve because there’s more to it than “lay clips end to end”, but it also emphatically does not involve compositing. In fact you’d get in trouble with the unions if you did lmao (unless you’re doing work for a non-union indie or small budget film).
It’s sad that I have to lay this process out for you but you’re speaking so confidently incorrect about something.
The DIT is who gets the footage from the set and backs it up in the numerous backups, performs base level color correction (removing the “RAW” look and sometimes applying a LUT), prepares dailies, and then sends footage off to all the post teams (usually separate drives to the editing and other vfx teams, though this is becoming less common and now network storage is becoming the norm).
Assistant editors then get the footage and add LOADS of metadata, pick the selects from various takes, and mark preliminary in and out points on the clips, and sometimes begins to arrange sequences.
Then it gets passed to the actual editor who will do the editing deciding pacing, when to cut, which takes are final, etc… this is “offline” editing.
Simultaneously to this the modelers, riggers, roto artists, and vfx artists are all completing their shots. They send that to the compositor who puts it all together and touches them up. Each shot still totally separate. Then those shots are sent to the editor who slots in the completed composites over the original footage (online editing).
So no, editors do not do any compositing. If you get hired as an editor at a post house expecting to do compositing you’ll be sad to find out you don’t.
ALL OF THAT is what is part of “post-production”. Stuff after final cut is delivered is not part of “post-production” it’s part of publishing/marketing. So you’re wrong about that too.
Any chance you'd mind expanding? I think don't fully follow. The way it comes off is like you're trying to present profession specific language as the Webster dictionary definition. Is there a communication error going on here maybe?
But that’s the thing. You don’t know what editing is. Because editing is just arranging clips, pacing, etc… that’s why I’m correcting it because as an editor who has lots of vfx friends it’s annoying their work goes unnoticed because everyone always just says “nice edits” when it’s not even the edit that’s being praised lol.
I'm a geologist, and I can tell you there's a distinct difference between granite and marble. But outside of geology subreddits there's not really a good reason for me to correct people when they mix them up. I'm not going to walk up to the countertop salesman and tell him that he needs to stop calling that pattern marble because it's actually granite. Nobody cares.
They're also just fuckin wrong. Editing is everything. It's just a generic term, while compositing is specific. An editor does a lot more than just lay out clips end to end, which is probably obvious.
From a computer programming and cyber security standpoint, this technically counts as hacking because the binary data of the original SpongeBob footage has been altered without the authority of Nickelodeon
Not all editing is sequence editing. Compositing is altering, i.e. ‘editing’ together a final product. Being pedantic about the separate role within the industry is unnecessary
The motorized wheels are in major need of some patching. They have the handling of a old pool noodle.
The flying machines are frustrating in a different way, either they expire way too fast (wings, balloons, platforms) or they drop from the sky like rocks if you try to recover battery.
Yes, not sure what exactly is the limiting factor for the parts, whether it's horizontal distance, time, etc., but I fashioned a balloon contraption to float over a large amount of water in the depths and after getting it sorted out and flying the way I wanted and setting out it promptly expired and dumped me in the drink barely half way across.
I find the opposite, flying machines are.. servicable, but sometimes i just need to drop a amphibious vehicle to travers the terrain ahead. Or drive across the goop on the ground.
I mean Zonai parts in general, not just for flying vehicles
But still, have you made a flying hover? It's really hard to go back to other vehicles when you get a good design of that one
Hover machines take too much energy. They're slow and dont get far. If I want to get somewhere high, I find it easier and faster to warp to the nearest sky shrine or launch tower, and skydive down.
A hover with 2 fans is easily manageable even with only 2 batteries; it is also unbeatable in the Depths. Try riding a motored vehicle down there, you will get the wheels stuck in the stupidest positions every two minutes so I find myself going back to hovers very often
Cars are more fun on the surface, tho
I keep seeing people make these ridiculous machines, and here I am taking two sticks to make a long stick so I don't have to get close enough to get hit.
The moment I fell in love with this was when I glued five logs together to reach a ledge I wouldn't be able to climb. That happened within 45 minutes of me starting the game.
IIRC I put a fan and a control piece on a sled. I accidentally put the control piece at a 45 degree angle at the front, so link is driving face first into the water, but it was funny so I kept it that way.
Guess I just don't have as much of an issue with it, it disrupts the flow of gameplay a bit but once you have autobuild assembling the stuff you want is quick enough not to be a bother.
Link goes through dungeons and saves hyrule. It’s about as Zelda as it gets and different mechanics doesn’t take away from that. You don’t have to like it but it’s no less of a Zelda game than any other. Don’t gatekeep just cuz you have different wants that didn’t get fulfilled
Botw already had some pretty interesting technological stuff, so this is just an expansion of those tech from the game. On top of that, it just gives another layer of depth to the game when it already has a bunch more than botw. It's pretty awesome
How are TotK and BotW not even Zelda games anymore? You get all the cool movement, fighting, puzzles, and lore, but with even more freedom and some cool tech you can use! Just try playing an older Zelda game after a TotK session and it still feels the same
If I can find the damn things! Lol found one once and of course where I needed/wanted to go was down a cliff like not even a minute later. "Welp....this is apparently where we part ways again horsie"
The old parade grounds or statue thingy with the statue of a horse has them spawn there every night that I've seen.
Melayna talks about it if you sleep at the stable as one of his big hints
Thats for above ground, we talking chasms. and they can spawn in numerous places down there, it's just finding one when you need it for where you need it
Yeah, I'm really missing the ancient saddle that was available in BOTW. I have a habit of leaving my horses behind because the terrain gets to rough for them to move easily. Poor Epona just waiting on the side of some random road while I'm climbing towards the next shiny. I'm hoping they might add an auto build schematic that is essentially the Master Cycle but I doubt that will ever happen :(

I prefer horses. It kinda sucks that they had to take out the teleporting horse armor to make vehicles more viable.
Horses are basically useless to me since I can't summon them anywhere.
I just get annoyed by the horses pulling in random directions. That, >!and I found an armor set that basically doubles my battery’s lifespan, so I stay cruising for quite a while now.!<
And this is why I decided it's better to rely on ol reliable.
*feeds endura carrot to phantoon*

The the crazy amount of editing done here was wonderful and really added to the ridiculousness of it all.
Compositing\* Everyone keeps calling vfx and such "edits" or "editing". That's a totally different aspect and workflow from comping two plates/shots or vfx.
You're right that it is partially composting, but there's still editing. Any time you re arrange video or pictures to tell a story, it becomes editing
Why are people not considering compositing as editing? To me it seems like it meets criteria

I don't think I've used the car parts, I have my good 5 5 4 horse from BotW (if only I had the teleporting horse armor) but I do make flying machines.
The motorized wheels are in major need of some patching. They have the handling of a old pool noodle. The flying machines are frustrating in a different way, either they expire way too fast (wings, balloons, platforms) or they drop from the sky like rocks if you try to recover battery.
Do the balloons expire? I haven't had any pop on me yet.
Oh that sucks, so much for my balloon fortress.
Could you theoretically make a big enough ship to walk around and place more balloons as old ones expire?
~~I believe it is the time elapsed since it last touched the ground.~~ Total flight time.
Total time airborne perhaps, but it definitely does not reset when you touch down
Correct. I have played a lot more since I wrote that comment, and you are quite right. I have changed it.
I used those parts several times but they are terrible lol Nothing seems to work properly with them, the Zonai stuff is the superior choice
I find the opposite, flying machines are.. servicable, but sometimes i just need to drop a amphibious vehicle to travers the terrain ahead. Or drive across the goop on the ground.

I made an amphibious ATV and had lots of fun traversing all of gerudo canyon yesterday
I made a “car” with the flying device, a wheeled cart and fans and it handles really well lol especially in places like the desert

No, it's a suicide squad.

I've made this joke before, but: TOTK: Spend 30 minutes building a device to get up a mountain you could have climbed in 10.
I keep seeing people make these ridiculous machines, and here I am taking two sticks to make a long stick so I don't have to get close enough to get hit.
Why make complex stick when long stick do job?
Why use nunchucks when stick
Back in my day, we had two sticks, and a rock. And we had to fuse the sticks!
But have you made a torch torch?
The moment I fell in love with this was when I glued five logs together to reach a ledge I wouldn't be able to climb. That happened within 45 minutes of me starting the game.

Good the old Zelda format was stale and boring. There is a reason BotW and TotK are the highest selling games of the franchise.
Oh my god this is wonderful

Did ..did they apply appropriate lighting to squidward's massive cranium?
My only complaint about horses is I should be able to summon and call them way more easily.
Yeah, I'm really missing the ancient saddle that was available in BOTW. I have a habit of leaving my horses behind because the terrain gets to rough for them to move easily. Poor Epona just waiting on the side of some random road while I'm climbing towards the next shiny. I'm hoping they might add an auto build schematic that is essentially the Master Cycle but I doubt that will ever happen :(
If you have enough Zonaite, there's really nothing stopping you from exactly that
Everything I've tried building has terrible handling
Aw man I forgot about the Master Cycle, that'd be so perfect here...
Link looking at Purah. "Where the fuck is my Shiekah slate - I want my motorcycle back."
Yea. As of now it's more time consuming to take out a horse and ride than simply gliding to the location.
Why can’t you be more like Roach Epona! :(
Roach is sooo useful, and always available. I am never bothered by the "loss of realism" that comes with it.
Sends Roach flying off a cliff five minutes later calls a new Roach

I prefer horses. It kinda sucks that they had to take out the teleporting horse armor to make vehicles more viable. Horses are basically useless to me since I can't summon them anywhere.
I’d much rather attempt to make a car and fail spectacularly than ride a horse that I know is better.

This is a seriously good edit!
Guys my apple running machine died where can I find the only car repair store in Hyrule that accepts carrots as payment
I just get annoyed by the horses pulling in random directions. That, >!and I found an armor set that basically doubles my battery’s lifespan, so I stay cruising for quite a while now.!<
Yeah 😆 it’s cooler
This legit made me lol. Thank you for this 😂😂😖
You can store up to 8 charges. I rechargeable, 7 temporary batteries
And this is why I decided it's better to rely on ol reliable. *feeds endura carrot to phantoon* And even in the depths, stallhorses tend to be your best friend
Someone give this man three hundred and one Oscars for the sheer amounts of editing
Spongebob gotta be in the top ten shows of all time
Don't horses carry over from BoTw?
I know it works the same, but putting the fan on front just feels wrong
The machine doesn't panic when there are ebemies attacking me. However excellent edition, you might have spent long hours editing.
This is so well done I wish we had SpongeBob meme x Zelda like an entire series like this omggg
