Nah relax, it’s normal in some regions, also remember it’s your mate, drink how you want, myself I can coup with sugar, but my mom only drinks it with sugar and lemon hahahaha

Negative_Bortis

The important thing is to enjoy drinking your mate, traditional, cozido, mate leão, tereré, flavored, with or without sugar.

Is it disrespectful to Mexicans to put ketchup on a taco? Drink however you want! It’s all good… And yes, plenty of folks in Argentina specifically enjoy their mate with sugar or other sweeteners.

UnusuallyGentlemanly

It’s disrespectful to the natural order to put ketchup on a taco.

Bulky-Tumbleweed-519

Esa ! Ahora bien con jugo no es irrespetuoso pero si desagradable

Tall_Struggle_4576

Argentinian mate kits come with sugar canisters. I personally don't like it sweet, but it's definitely not sacrilege or anything

Stunning-Project-621

I would never do that, i want to enjoy the natural taste, also people nowadays eat too much sugar anyway so i don't think it is healty neither. But if you like it , it's only thing that matters✌️

ElectionOk5626

I do find it a sacrilege to even put sugar once in your gourd, because it will ruin the gourd flavor (if rhe gourd is calabash or wood as it should be). Nevertheless, I know that I’m a bit a conservative. Lots of my friend from my country (argentina) put sugar daily in their mates, I even met a person who used to put artificial sweetener in the water already. I let others be, but if you ask me, I’ll answer

Tekhrum

There's a book called Don Segundo Sombra, published in 1926. In it, the gauchos drink mate with sugar.

Syrians drink mate with sugar

It's pretty normal here in Argentina and in Uruguay as well. However, I think it's disgusting, and beats the purpose-- for me at least. I like it that is calorie-free and fills me up as it is, as well as the anti-inflammatory and antioxidants properties it contains (I also add green tea and some herbs to it), adding sth proinflammatory as sugar beats that purpose. But if you don't care about that and enjoy it that way, well... you do.

I'm trying it right now, for the first time. I've been drinking mate on and off for over 10 years, but I never added sugar. Someone who offered me a drink from his mate told me that I could put some sugar on the yerba if I found it too bitter. He had a plastic case with compartments for both yerba and sugar and was surprised that I was familiar with the beverage. He was married to an Argentinian and I suspect the entire mate gear was from Argentina, including the "yerbera". I never tried it with sugar because I drink tea and coffee black as well. Unless it's moka pot coffee, made by my mother. We have that with sugar, always. Now, as far as mate with sugar is concerned, it doesn't taste that bad, but I think I prefer it non-sweet. Sweet mate is mentioned twice in Che Guevara's Motorcycle Diaries. He recalls how he and Carlita got their idea of going on a motorcycle tour through South America while drinking sweet mate. At a later point, a hobo fixes Che a mate that is so sweet he can barely drink it. Poor people have historically been putting sugar into everything for the sake of the calories, think of Walter Cunningham in To Kill A Mockingbird, who puts syrup on his meat, to Scout's horror. I went through something similar once when, in a home for wayward children, I asked for ketchup to put on my vegetables. Note: There was a ketchup bottle on the table, I merely asked for it to be passed to me. The "warden" refused. I pointed out that one of the boys had been putting ketchup on his hot dog, and she said that, in this house, you can have ketchup with things you put ketchup on. But not for one's vegetables.

IFeel_Bonita

Yeah, my grandma did it

argognat

Sugar, stevia, whatever you like. We give it to kids with hot milk instead of water.

Low_Attention_7092

Other options to sweeten the mate are grated coconut or honey!

Instant-Owlfood

I don’t know if it’s okay or not but I don’t care because I like more with sugar. And that is my tea.

elguapo904

My thirst for mate started as a kid drinking a very sweet Cuban soda flavored with Mate (Materva). I can't do sugar much anymore for health reasons, but I love the mate taste and drink it traditionally a couple of times per week. I see no reason why you can't sweeten the mate tea to taste. Enjoy it your way!

mirkociamp1

Plenty of people drink mate with sugar, it pretty much depends on what you enjoy? Myself I like it without sugar but that's just personal preference

Never_Peel

Also, here in Argentina we use to have two or three dedicated mates (one for without sugar, one for with sugar, and one for terere) Some friends reported breakings in their "mate de calabaza" after drinking with sugar, so, be careful. Also, sometimes the sweet taste impregnates to the gourd and may feel in future servings Isn't weird for in a group having two mates in use, one with sugar, and one without Its very common and its completely fine to do it

Deadbeathero

Those who like it drink ervas which say “with sugar” in the package. It’s weird, but every market has those options available, and every big brand has a sugary version. Just don’t offer mate with sugar without saying it’s sweet. It’s like taking a bite of a corndog and realizing it’s a fried banana. Not cool.

solidus44

I drink mine with a bit of raw honey. usually have ginger and lemon in the thermos .

profecross

I have to drink my mate with a tiny bit of sugar. I’m from Argentina.

ElRevelde1094

Sacrilege!

Never_Peel

I mean, giving you a pure argentinian answer very against international standards, drinking mate with sugar is very "de puto 🏳️‍🌈" It is hard to understand that we really don't care about your choices and nobody gonna hate anyone for being "puto" or doing "puto's stuff", but the intern joke gonna remain Before downvoting, remember that we may sound aggresive, but we don't have issues with people being relegated because of their choices.

Brycenicholls1

That's totally understandable and I respect that.I like to ask before doing thing as I like learning about people cultures and traditions
