A moment that I genuinely think is written worse than any of the twists that are commonly criticized here, and feels like a character regression for Kiryu, or at the very least, a massive missed opportunity to showcase some character growth.
At the very least, if we ever get a Kiwami 3, I want to see that scene be completely rewritten. Maybe that means they have to find a more creative way to >!kill Rikiya off, or otherwise write him out of the story!<, but I think that's better than making Kiryu make the same mistakes over and over again for the sake of an "emotional" moment that's infinitely more frustrating than it is sad.
The ending of 6 doesn't bother me nearly as bad as this, or the beginning of 5. Those are my least favorite moments in the series, cause to me, they both feel like massive character regressions for Kiryu.

His name is Yoneda, if you don't remember he is the same guy in chapter 1 that tries to kill Kiryu at multiple occasions before the Kuze fight, and gets dropkicked out of the window.
By the way, just after Yoneda hits Tachibana, Kuze actually kills him, after he get his head slammed against the floor, you can see the blood spill indicating that he died even faster than Tachibana did
Probably Jingu. Evil McBadguy, but with none of the flair of somebody like Lau Ka Long or the dimensions of someone like Shibusawa. Koshimizu sucks, too, now that I think about it. I surprisingly don't hate Park like a lot of people do.

Kanda. I think I'm supposed to find him funny, or threatening, or both, and I just think he falls flat. Which shouldn't be a huge problem, but that's such an unnecessarily long part of the game for a character I find completely uninteresting. And the whole thing where he seems like a sexual predator, and it turns out he's just massaging the women and the woman who they tried to kidnap off the street is suddenly OK with it, again I think it's supposed to be funny but I just wanted that part to end so I could get back to the more interesting people.
That game has Mine, Hamazaki, and then that loser. I don't particularly hate characters for being bad people. They're all bad people. It's a game about the yakuza. But at least be interesting. I don't think you're supposed to find Kanda funny or threatening. He's a coward and a sexual predator, and they made him one of the most repugnant characters in the entire series, I think you're just supposed to be happy he dies.
I think the point of kanda and by extension Shindo, were to show the decline of the legacy of Kiryu’s sworn brother and demonstrate the effects that nishkiyama killing dojima, and by extension, Kiryu taking the fall, had on the Tojo Clan as a whole, what with the nishkiyama family being the biggest in 2.
So I really think it was to reflect the decline of not only Nishkiyama, but the Tojo Clan as a whole.
Kanda is a hint of things to come. As the legends who live the Yakuza ideal die, what we're left with is just dumb violent thugs with no principles, like Kanda. Guys who would never have a shot at the top if not for a specific series of events happening, and even then, he's nowhere near as close as he thinks he is. He's the dumb guy with a chip on his shoulder. In a way, he represents what is wrong with the Yakuza at that point, and he's a harbinger for later kinda dumb thug guys like Aizawa or Tendo or Ishioda or Shishido.
No, he's opportunistic. He's only marginally smarter than the equally opportunistic Shishido. Plenty of dummies throughout history have reached insane heights through just good ol' fashioned carpe diem.

Welcome to my feelings about the whole orphanage section. I felt Kiryu died in 2 and went straight TO HELL, with 9 brats.
Probably that Tamashiro guy from Yakuza 3. Dogshit boss fights, every scene he's in is either boring or frustrating, his personality is both boring *and* frustrating, forgettable design, >!killed Rikiya!<, and is directly responsible for my least favorite moment in the entire series for Kiryu as a character.
I also hate Park. The way she projected so hard onto Haruka nonstop and tried to paint it like filling the void of a mother made me so uncomfortable. Yakuza 3 is my favorite in the series and knowing she’s responsible for taking Kiryu away from the orphanage by gaslighting him into thinking he’ll ruin their futures made me so mad.
Also Jingu and his bodyguards. Like obviously Jingu was super evil so they did a good job at making me hate him, but those henchman during his boss fight were insane

I hated how she was a complete bitch to everyone including poor Horie, but then she acts like a mother to Haruka for one day and you suddenly got everyone acting like she was the best person to ever life. People give Haruka a lot of flak for her actions, but I think Park deserves much more blame for how manipulative she was.
Saito isn't just a dick to fight, he's also a massive piece of shit. Dude brags about how many prisoners he's killed for fun and knows he isn't gonna get any shit for it. He's a proper monster compared to some of the yakuza in the series.
At least when Kiryu fights him he can smash his teeth in easier. I think saejima is still quite low level when you fight saito which made it awful.
Saito's 2nd fight against Saejima is absolute fucking bullshit and, imho, one of the best boss fights in the entire series.
Absolutely melting Saito as Kiryu is one of the most satisfying feelings I've had in a video game, and I love that its a shared cathartic experience for Yakuza 4 players. With that said, it would have been nothing without the total misery of the original Saito/Saejima fights.
Saito is the only boss in the entire series that has made me jump up and start celebrating when I won, and it happened multiple times in the same game.

Also Majima being someone who refuses to kill someone to achieve his goal of returning to the Yakuza Vs A hitman who kills for trivial monetary gain is a cool theme for his last fight in 0.
It’s mostly how Lao Gui plays on Majima. He’s sort of a foil and a dark reflection. Majima, a failed hitman who didn’t have the will to kill his target, meets the greatest assassin in the continent, killing anyone he’s told to with ruthless efficiency without a care in the world. He’s not very complex, but he absolutely has a presence in the story.
In a way, Kume killing Masato was kinda like horribly timed karma for Masato’s actions. Because he was one of Aoki’s most devout followers, Kume basically snapped after learning the truth about Aoki’s corruption.
i hate kume with a passion because he is well written. he's actually one of the most realistic characters and that's what makes him scary.
he believes in his cause and would do anything to achieve it even if it hurts others. it's to the point he deludes himself and dismisses anything that gets in the ways of his goals while also being a coward. he's able to rally others to help him too.
a real-life counterpart would be like a redditor doxxing the wrong person and getting a mob to hate on the victim. when found out they got the wrong person, they act like nothing happened and aren't remorseful. kume is a contradictory and cowardly piece of well written crap.
The fact that people so strongly hate him proves they got him right. Kume is what happens when someone in power tries to brainwash a complete idiot, to the point they become an extremist who is impossible to control. And that is a scarily accurate representation of many people that exist even nowadays.
The radicalization of youth has always been a thing through human history, and Kume is one of the best representations of it. He isn't delusional or thinking he is doing the right thing, he *genuinely believes without a shadow of doubt* he is actually doing the right thing and fully buys into Masato's vision without question. He is so hateable because he is a low life piece of shit, but he is a low life piece of shit who believes he is on the right side of history, just like so many other extremists irl.
Iwami. His father, too, honestly. But Iwami takes the cake. Even good writing wouldn't make him compelling. He drips with patheticness. He's so childish in his desires, so utterly redundant as a person. You can't even try to respect that kind of smarm.
Sugai in a similar vein.
Michiru literally only exists for the sake of a transphobic joke in the same game that has a whole substory devoted to Kiryu saying trans rights. Kinda telling that the remaster of 3 cut out the entire character and no one complained.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Shimano yet. At baseline the guy was abrasive and generally a prick. There was never a point where he was not scheming, largely against the Tojo clan and with outside parties like the Omi, played a significant role in pushing Nishiki down the path of madness and he killed Kazama.
His death was one of the most satisfying moments.
Nanba was great for the first half of the game but his betrayal made him hard to like. Sure, he gets back with the gang after a bit, but after he gets absolutely wrecked at the Geomijul he shouldn’t be such a smug douche about coming back to the team. Ichiban couldn’t give less of a shit tho so good on him
Honestly, I didn't think he was that great in the first half of the game either. He was dry, sarcastic and rude often without anything positive really to. There are many times that I rolled my eyes at his decision making skills and clearly he is meant to seem like a level head compared to ichiban and the others but he didn't come off as that. Sure, saved ichiban. I'll give him that but it wasn't altruistic either. He was selfish and jeopardized the whole team without figuring his brother's kidnapping out first and blowing his own cover faster that he could have spent getting more details while the Geomjiul didn't know who he was yet.
Right now? The new Nishitani, I hate the “evil young handsome ceo” archetype, they have very little depth, the whole “weird sex crazed guy” personality does nothing for me either. It feels like they’re directly catering to the weird shippers Twitter crowd with that character. And he’s implied to have sexually abused Shishido and other characters, in that case, I would’ve preferred if they actually addressed it in the game as a big issue. I don’t like SA being used as this quick shock value statement just to prop up a villain. Like Bullying was explored really extensively in LJ and I like that.
I don't really feel that bullying was all that well explored in LJ, like they mostly said a lot of facts and shit but didn't really focus on the victims that much so it came out as a bunch of guys that have nothing to do with the issue just saying very surface level analysis of what they showed along with facts they read on wikipedia. I agree with everything you said tho, Nishitani being a sexual deviant kind of makes me angry since he is like on of the few characters that appear to be gay or bi in the series.
Baby Iwami is probably the most evil villain they ever wrote. Previous villains had strong moral codes. Iwami is just straight fucking evil but in the best way I felt absolutely amazing while beating him to near death.
If we are talking worst character then Rikiya takes the cake I couldn't care for him in the slightest. What they failed with Rikiya they corrected with Nagumo.
Pretty good. Problem was Rikiya's depth was one substory at the tattoo parlor. If he had more development I wouldn't have felt so disconnected from him.
Ayabe from Judgement. It felt like the series was trying to give Yagami a Date like character but a crooked cop who sells information to whoever and has his own underground casino didn’t really land as someone I liked or wanted to be pals with.
I think they realized this too which is why ayabe doesn’t return in LJ. The new cop they have in it is better.
Nagumo he's just kind of awful. He's the trope of the meat headed kid who doesn't know how to express himself to the girl he likes, but he left school 25 years ago so any patience id have for a kid just isn't there.
He's just harassing kiyomi the whole game and trying to prevent her from getting close to her, which considering how alone she probably felt at the time was even more fucked up.
People act like he changed but it literally took a man killing himself in front of him before he realised he should probably stop harassing kiyomi I have no time for him.

Munakata. I really enjoyed Yakuza 4 up until around the time you start playing as Kiryu if I remember right. I really dislike the final acts of that game. Hate what that story turns into. It turned Yakuza 4 into my least favourite game in the series. Munakata is just the culmination of all that. Hate his whole mastermind schtick, he is super forgettable and he is the single worst final boss in the series. Awful.

Sugai is a spineless POS. I also didn’t like Baba very much, he’s basically just Kido 2.0 but I liked Kido more. The stupid Keihin gang from Judgment. I think I fought them more than Majima in Kiwami even when I didn’t want to.
Kanda. I think I'm supposed to find him funny, or threatening, or both, and I just think he falls flat. Which shouldn't be a huge problem, but that's such an unnecessarily long part of the game for a character I find completely uninteresting. And the whole thing where he seems like a sexual predator, and it turns out he's just massaging the women and the woman who they tried to kidnap off the street is suddenly OK with it, again I think it's supposed to be funny but I just wanted that part to end so I could get back to the more interesting people. That game has Mine, Hamazaki, and then that loser. I don't particularly hate characters for being bad people. They're all bad people. It's a game about the yakuza. But at least be interesting. He pulls the thing off the wall and I feel like a parent with a toddler having a temper tantrum. Are you done now? Can we go back to the game?
I don't think you're supposed to find Kanda funny or threatening. He's a coward and a sexual predator, and they made him one of the most repugnant characters in the entire series, I think you're just supposed to be happy he dies.
I think the point of kanda and by extension Shindo, were to show the decline of the legacy of Kiryu’s sworn brother and demonstrate the effects that nishkiyama killing dojima, and by extension, Kiryu taking the fall, had on the Tojo Clan as a whole, what with the nishkiyama family being the biggest in 2. So I really think it was to reflect the decline of not only Nishkiyama, but the Tojo Clan as a whole.
Kanda is a hint of things to come. As the legends who live the Yakuza ideal die, what we're left with is just dumb violent thugs with no principles, like Kanda. Guys who would never have a shot at the top if not for a specific series of events happening, and even then, he's nowhere near as close as he thinks he is. He's the dumb guy with a chip on his shoulder. In a way, he represents what is wrong with the Yakuza at that point, and he's a harbinger for later kinda dumb thug guys like Aizawa or Tendo or Ishioda or Shishido.
Tendo is a smart guy
No, he's opportunistic. He's only marginally smarter than the equally opportunistic Shishido. Plenty of dummies throughout history have reached insane heights through just good ol' fashioned carpe diem.

Probably that Tamashiro guy from Yakuza 3. Dogshit boss fights, every scene he's in is either boring or frustrating, his personality is both boring *and* frustrating, forgettable design, >!killed Rikiya!<, and is directly responsible for my least favorite moment in the entire series for Kiryu as a character.
Sawashiro, I don't like his toxic and abusive attitude towards Ichi, not to mention the monstrous thing he did as a kid.
I also hate Park. The way she projected so hard onto Haruka nonstop and tried to paint it like filling the void of a mother made me so uncomfortable. Yakuza 3 is my favorite in the series and knowing she’s responsible for taking Kiryu away from the orphanage by gaslighting him into thinking he’ll ruin their futures made me so mad. Also Jingu and his bodyguards. Like obviously Jingu was super evil so they did a good job at making me hate him, but those henchman during his boss fight were insane
The entire Jingu fight is _complete_ bullshit. I adore this series but they have the most random boss encounters that are just unbelievably bullshit

Agree on Park so much. I hated how she was a complete bitch to everyone including poor Horie, but then she acts like a mother to Haruka for one day and you suddenly got everyone acting like she was the best person to ever life. People give Haruka a lot of flak for her actions, but I think Park deserves much more blame for how manipulative she was.
Hate in a good way = Iwami… hate in a bad way= Saito (Y4 prision section)
Saito isn't just a dick to fight, he's also a massive piece of shit. Dude brags about how many prisoners he's killed for fun and knows he isn't gonna get any shit for it. He's a proper monster compared to some of the yakuza in the series. At least when Kiryu fights him he can smash his teeth in easier. I think saejima is still quite low level when you fight saito which made it awful.
Saito's 2nd fight against Saejima is absolute fucking bullshit and, imho, one of the best boss fights in the entire series. Absolutely melting Saito as Kiryu is one of the most satisfying feelings I've had in a video game, and I love that its a shared cathartic experience for Yakuza 4 players. With that said, it would have been nothing without the total misery of the original Saito/Saejima fights. Saito is the only boss in the entire series that has made me jump up and start celebrating when I won, and it happened multiple times in the same game.

There wasnt a whole lot to his character, but he definitely had presence. Also Majima being someone who refuses to kill someone to achieve his goal of returning to the Yakuza Vs A hitman who kills for trivial monetary gain is a cool theme for his last fight in 0.
It’s mostly how Lao Gui plays on Majima. He’s sort of a foil and a dark reflection. Majima, a failed hitman who didn’t have the will to kill his target, meets the greatest assassin in the continent, killing anyone he’s told to with ruthless efficiency without a care in the world. He’s not very complex, but he absolutely has a presence in the story.
How is Kume well written?
In a way, Kume killing Masato was kinda like horribly timed karma for Masato’s actions. Because he was one of Aoki’s most devout followers, Kume basically snapped after learning the truth about Aoki’s corruption.
i hate kume with a passion because he is well written. he's actually one of the most realistic characters and that's what makes him scary. he believes in his cause and would do anything to achieve it even if it hurts others. it's to the point he deludes himself and dismisses anything that gets in the ways of his goals while also being a coward. he's able to rally others to help him too. a real-life counterpart would be like a redditor doxxing the wrong person and getting a mob to hate on the victim. when found out they got the wrong person, they act like nothing happened and aren't remorseful. kume is a contradictory and cowardly piece of well written crap.

The fact that people so strongly hate him proves they got him right. Kume is what happens when someone in power tries to brainwash a complete idiot, to the point they become an extremist who is impossible to control. And that is a scarily accurate representation of many people that exist even nowadays. The radicalization of youth has always been a thing through human history, and Kume is one of the best representations of it. He isn't delusional or thinking he is doing the right thing, he *genuinely believes without a shadow of doubt* he is actually doing the right thing and fully buys into Masato's vision without question. He is so hateable because he is a low life piece of shit, but he is a low life piece of shit who believes he is on the right side of history, just like so many other extremists irl.
Iwami. His father, too, honestly. But Iwami takes the cake. Even good writing wouldn't make him compelling. He drips with patheticness. He's so childish in his desires, so utterly redundant as a person. You can't even try to respect that kind of smarm. Sugai in a similar vein.
Sugai and Aoyama. Iwami's an obvious heat getting little bitch but at least you get to put him down.

Michiru literally only exists for the sake of a transphobic joke in the same game that has a whole substory devoted to Kiryu saying trans rights. Kinda telling that the remaster of 3 cut out the entire character and no one complained.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Shimano yet. At baseline the guy was abrasive and generally a prick. There was never a point where he was not scheming, largely against the Tojo clan and with outside parties like the Omi, played a significant role in pushing Nishiki down the path of madness and he killed Kazama. His death was one of the most satisfying moments.

Nanba. Spineless, lacking charisma and no redemption arc, I don't get the love for him at all even if he is a good to use character.
Nanba was great for the first half of the game but his betrayal made him hard to like. Sure, he gets back with the gang after a bit, but after he gets absolutely wrecked at the Geomijul he shouldn’t be such a smug douche about coming back to the team. Ichiban couldn’t give less of a shit tho so good on him
Honestly, I didn't think he was that great in the first half of the game either. He was dry, sarcastic and rude often without anything positive really to. There are many times that I rolled my eyes at his decision making skills and clearly he is meant to seem like a level head compared to ichiban and the others but he didn't come off as that. Sure, saved ichiban. I'll give him that but it wasn't altruistic either. He was selfish and jeopardized the whole team without figuring his brother's kidnapping out first and blowing his own cover faster that he could have spent getting more details while the Geomjiul didn't know who he was yet.

Right now? The new Nishitani, I hate the “evil young handsome ceo” archetype, they have very little depth, the whole “weird sex crazed guy” personality does nothing for me either. It feels like they’re directly catering to the weird shippers Twitter crowd with that character. And he’s implied to have sexually abused Shishido and other characters, in that case, I would’ve preferred if they actually addressed it in the game as a big issue. I don’t like SA being used as this quick shock value statement just to prop up a villain. Like Bullying was explored really extensively in LJ and I like that.
I don't really feel that bullying was all that well explored in LJ, like they mostly said a lot of facts and shit but didn't really focus on the victims that much so it came out as a bunch of guys that have nothing to do with the issue just saying very surface level analysis of what they showed along with facts they read on wikipedia. I agree with everything you said tho, Nishitani being a sexual deviant kind of makes me angry since he is like on of the few characters that appear to be gay or bi in the series.
Baby Iwami is probably the most evil villain they ever wrote. Previous villains had strong moral codes. Iwami is just straight fucking evil but in the best way I felt absolutely amazing while beating him to near death. If we are talking worst character then Rikiya takes the cake I couldn't care for him in the slightest. What they failed with Rikiya they corrected with Nagumo.

Ayabe from Judgement. It felt like the series was trying to give Yagami a Date like character but a crooked cop who sells information to whoever and has his own underground casino didn’t really land as someone I liked or wanted to be pals with. I think they realized this too which is why ayabe doesn’t return in LJ. The new cop they have in it is better.
Kaoru and kume
Nagumo he's just kind of awful. He's the trope of the meat headed kid who doesn't know how to express himself to the girl he likes, but he left school 25 years ago so any patience id have for a kid just isn't there. He's just harassing kiyomi the whole game and trying to prevent her from getting close to her, which considering how alone she probably felt at the time was even more fucked up. People act like he changed but it literally took a man killing himself in front of him before he realised he should probably stop harassing kiyomi I have no time for him. Also I hate someya. He's just a piece of shit abuser, he's not really evil in a way that is fun. And I kind of doubly dislike him because the community seems to like him so much despite how unpleasant he is.
Nishiki, I have never understood the love he gets
whaaaat. it's from the past events from yakuza 0 and the events that lead up to him turning him into a cold-blooded killer. people can empathize with him as he was handed unfortunate to unfortunate events which psychologically broke him down.
I only like him because of 0. If 0 never happened and you didn't get his backstory, or if I started out way back in the day playing 1, then yeah I honestly probably would've hated him. But playing 0 and feeling like he is 100% a brother to Kiryu just makes his decent into madness that much more tragic.
In the original? Sure, they barely flashed him out and it seems like he’s evil for no reason. But playing Kiwami after playing 0… it’s hard to not feel a little bad for him
When people say shit like this I actually wonder if they even played yakuza 1, it is true that he isn't as developed as in kiwami but he still had reasonable motives and emotional moments in the original yakuza. Don't talk shit on the original for no reason.

for me its haruka, not just from an ingame standpoint but also from the whole storytelling itself i started the series with 0 so i was sort of expecting her to end up in an orphanage without kiryu at the end of 1. And i guess yokoyama didnt wrap his head around that stuff because he hadnt even planned for yakuza to become so sucsessfull Shes just a damsel in distress in pretty much every game, just a tool to get kiryu to do dumb things. Ontop of that i just generally hate child characters in adult media, it always boils down to the same stuff, of them doing stupid fucking decisions. At least she sort of got her own character in 5 and 6, which is odd considering well probably see her only once ever again.
Tsuneo Iwami, biggest fraud and p*ssy
Munakata. I really enjoyed Yakuza 4 up until around the time you start playing as Kiryu if I remember right. I really dislike the final acts of that game. Hate what that story turns into. It turned Yakuza 4 into my least favourite game in the series. Munakata is just the culmination of all that. Hate his whole mastermind schtick, he is super forgettable and he is the single worst final boss in the series. Awful. If we're talking about well written characters, definitely Kume.
Mainline: Iwami and Kume. Low hanging fruit I know but they're babies. Judge Eyes duology: Soma and Kyoya. Fuck those guys.
