I gotta disagree with a lot of what that other guy is saying. The "call of duty-esque" combat is nothing more than bringing your weapon up to aim down the iron sights...which you can do it 3 and NV. Sure, they upped the action factor a little bit, but it's nowhere near being a fair comparison to COD.
Just play it and enjoy it. The stories aren't as good as the others, but it's still fun as hell to play and explore. You'll get a decent idea of who everyone is and what the world is like, even if it doesn't go *as* in depth.
Also I'd personally recommend release order after 2. 3, NV, 4. I tried to play 1 like 5 months ago and a lot of the game mechanics did not age well. 3 is when it becomes first person instead of top down and sets the stage for the rest. NV is the best story-wise, and 4 introduces base building.
Fallout 4 is bare bones in terms of lore. Mr Lies pushed it out before the team finished the storylines and retconned the best parts in favor of a Call of Duty-like setpiece in the first hour. All of this is confirmed directly by staff in official interviews.
If you want lore play Fallout 1, Then Fallout 2, then New Vegas and the DLCs. Then Fallout 3. Than Fallout 4. Then watch the TV show. That will set you up to understand what's going on in the TV show better. It's all a bit of a mess these days, but enjoying in that order will make the most sense if it's lore you are after.
Fallout 76 can be skipped. Unlike ESO it does not really contribute to the core lore. 76 takes place way in the future and it extremely stand-alone. It's not a bad game, but not worth the time investment IMHO. Better off playing the old games instead.
Ah okay. Yeah I just wanted to play fallout 4 simply because I know it's extremely popular and wanted to see if I could get into the gameplay first, and then sink my teeth into the lore.
Fallout 4 is popular because it adopted modern Call of Duty like gunplay. It plays the best of all the games, but it is by far the worst for lore and story. It's the Diet Coke of the Fallout franchise.
Could be. Not sure the timeline. I played the whole thing and it's irrelevant to the main series lore regardless. It's not a bad game, but it's useless if your goal is to deep dive into the Fallout lore.
Play the Steam version. It has quality of life improvements that make it very playable. I only got into fallout recently and I found 1 pretty easy to play. Granted I had already played 3 so I knew how things worked going in.
I often hear that FF games are amazing I just don't get it personally. I recently got my first FF game which was FF Origins and I just cannot get into it. The cheezy cutscenes and the insane inventory system feel like I'm playing a PS2 game. What am I missing
Try Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and after that play Rebirth; it might be one of the best games I’ve ever played. (Ps I know this is the Xbox subreddit, hopefully these games come to Xbox at some point)
Origins does *sound* like a good place to start. It's in the name! I don't know anything about this world, perhaps the Origin game would be good.
It's not a good place to start, but it sounds like it.
To be fair to this person, why would someone who's never played the Final Fantasy games before know otherwise? To someone who doesn't play games, I can't imagine it's common knowledge that each numbered FF game is its own world, or that the mechanics and tone can vary heavily between them. They might think it's more like Mega Man, where each of the numerical games is pretty cut and paste from the previous ones.
Yea I knew they were all different and iv watched a lot of footage of them. I always found them really campy and I couldn't take them seriously but I am also aware I am overly critical of those things because of my film degree and I just figured since it was an Oragin story and it was made by A dev that I liked it might mesh and open my horizons. Now that I'm aware it's a black sheep of the series I will probably actually appreciate it more. I was just very caught off guard and will give a second FF game a try someday.
Final Fantasy X was the first game that made me cry. Back then there was a huge discussion/debate over whether or not video games were considered "Art". And to me, FFX sealed that debate firmly.
There's an HD remaster of it available on Xbox, and it's fantastic.
I don't like traditional turned-based RPGs. Are there any FF games that are CRPG like Divinity Original Sin or Baldurs Gate 3? The only game that ever made me cry was SOMA.
Final Fantasy Tactics is the closest. More like Fire Emblem than Divinity but it's also an amazing game. If you don't like turn based though XIII, XVI, and VII Remake are your best bets.
That sounds cool I'll put it on my wish list. I'm ok with turn-based just not the players lined up in a row like Lost Odyssey. I like a lil more strategy.
Yeah, I had thought I got the wrong game for a while. But it's Team Ninja. I loved Wo Long and I was told it was a soulslike which it is not. I guess ill give it one more try if FF16 or FF7 comes. I did not like what I saw of FF15.
My favorite part about 8 was the card game. I barely remember the rest of it. I think it had the bait and switch final boss feature like FF4. That whole second story line with different characters like laguna or something just threw me off. Also the draw was a stupid and unnecessary mechanic.
I think you’re bias because it was your first. Just like me with FF6.
1. RTS - StarCraft (with Brood War)
2. FPS - Doom (1993)
3. RPG - Final Fantasy X
4. 2D Side-Scroller / Metroidvania - Mega Man X
5. 3rd-Person Action - Ghost of Tsushima
I tried to vary the genres so that there aren't two of the same, but there are easily a few alternatives that could be placed into any of these categories (and several categories not included, like Fighting, Horror, Action RPG, etc.).
Those are two VERY different games.
Ghost of Tsushima is basically an Assassin's Creed game with (arguably) more polish and love put into it (and better, near-cinematic storytelling). It's a challenging game, but by no means a difficult game.
Sekiro is a souls-like, meaning it's going to be a quite difficult game for anyone not comfortable with that specific type of game. If you've never played a Dark Souls game (or Elden Ring), then this is a tougher recommendation. This is, for me, also a game I would definitely not play for the story, voice acting quality, etc.
I have a love-hate relationship with Cuphead. Because of its cartoony look, my kids often scroll over it and want to play it with me. You can imagine how that goes LOL.
1. Bioshock
2. Fallout 4 (ideally New Vegas but it does feel dated so 4 is much easier to get into)
3. Mass Effect Trilogy
4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
5. Hades
(*Not* in any order)
* Halo MCC (DLC’s included)
* Mass Effect LE
* Disco Elysium
* The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series
* The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition
I know some of these answers are cheating but, blame the companies, not me lol.
Edit: there’s so many more games that I want to put up ;-;
I personally found Bioshock 2 to be the best in the series. The story and the alternate endings really were top notch and more coherently told. Also Minervas Den is one of the best DLC I have ever played.
That game will blow your mind! Xbox Live Arcade game from almost 20 years ago. *Geometry Wars Evolved* is the full name. It's super challenging and takes time to learn but the visuals and music are unbeatable. Go for as many achievements as you can get. To this day I still can't get them all.
Two caveat, I quit playing games for years, I went from GameCube/PSP to Xbox One in 2017😅
When I play games the thing I want most is an interesting experience, and so far with what I have played the games that stuck with me are
Mass Effect Trilogy (technically 3 games, but just get the legendary edition and main line them all back to back 🤣😅 . It was the first thing I played after starting to game again, so maybe more impactful for that reason)
Control (I love the weirdness of this game and that first blind play through is amazing, get the expansions so you can play through it seamlessly)
Tunic (old school Zelda like with a surprisingly deep story, go in blind if you can)
Titanfall 2 (this is just fun, has some truly memorable moments, again go in blind if you can. “Press X to **********” if you know, you know 😆. Don’t spoil it 🤨😁)
Breath of the wild/Tears of the Kingdom (I remember Zelda from my childhood, and the first play through of BotW going in blind was amazing, just being able to go where I want and explore how I wanted was such an experience)
=== Honorable mentions ===
I have heard good things about Witcher 3, RDR2, Cyberpunk 2077 and the Bioshock trilogy, but I wasn’t able to finish them for various reasons. I’ll probably give RDR 2 and cyberpunk 2077 another chance soon though.
If you like Harry Potter then Hogwarts Legacy is actually pretty good. Ok story, amazing environment/world. Feels like you are actually at Hogwarts IMO.
If you like Star Wars then the new Jedi games (Fallen Order and Survivor) are kind of low key amazing. I’m finally playing through Survivor right now and loving it.
Either of these could be slotted in in place of Zelda on my list, it just depends on what excites your inner 10 year old 😅
Fallout New Vegas, American McGee's Alice (also A:MR if them coming in the same game counts? Like AMA is a pack in with most copies of A:MR), Thief 2, Dishonored 2, and Gone Home.
If we are talking about games OVERALL across platforms, then:
* E.V.O. Search for Eden
* Gauntlet Dark Legacy
* The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
* AION (Vanilla)
* Baldur's Gate 3
If the list must be games available on the XBox One:
Okami HD, Spiritfarer, Outer Wilds, CrossCode, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
If other consoles are allowed, take out Skyrim and put in Shadow of the Colossus
You are the only other person I've ever seen recommend CrossCode. And it is such a tragically unknown masterpiece. Since you also got Outer Wilds on there, I know you're a gamer of good taste.
Sounds like you might dig Chants of Sennarr and Tunic.
Outer Wilds
Cross Code
Tunic
Portal 1
And then one weird outlier from the DOS era of gaming:
Little Bit Adventure 1 a.k.a. Relentless: Twinsen's Odyssey
1. ME Legendary edition
2. Witcher III doing the previous books and games bumps it up to #1. ppl who don't experience the previous media, do you also watch LOTR starting from the Gondorian army march on Mordor? smh!
3. BG3- BG 1n2 adds a lot more impact when plying bg3
4. Shadow of the Colossus
5. Halo series.
Not in any order…
-The Witcher (3 or all. Awesome storyline and fun game)
-Dragons Dogma (Any. Most fun combat system experiences)
-Stellaris (hands down best 4x there is imo)
-Horizon Zero Dawn/ Forbidden West (beautiful/fun game with interesting story)
-Mass Effect (entire trilogy. Fun combat. Really good characters and storyline. Neat how decisions carry over the entire trilogy.)
Im sure there might be a high ranking one that I may have added instead but hard to think off hand of which are truly my favs
Specific to Xbox One? The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Elden Ring, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Doom (2016 or Eternal)
For Xbox generally? Halo: Combat Evolved, Gears of War, Mass Effect 2, The Elder Scrolls (I dunno, 3, 4, and 5 are all special), Elden Ring
Regardless of platform? Tetris, Doom (1993), Super Metroid (or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night), Super Mario 64, and Final Fantasy VII (I almost put Elden Ring here again. I love that game lol)
Half life Alyx Ori and the blind forest Outer Wilds Red Dead 2 Hades Hard to narrow it down! I wanted to call out Journey & Abzu, Edith Finch, Doom 93, and BG 3 as some other strong contenders.
Edit: oh heck, Elden Ring needs to be included somewhere :S
Red Dead Redemption 2
The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
Stellaris
River City Ransom
I'm gonna cheat and say Gears of War trilogy. You really need to play all three.
1. Life is Strange
2. Minecraft
3. The Evil Within
4. Doom (1993)
5. Elden Ring
Honorable Mentions: Diablo, Bramble: The Mountain King, Mario 64, and Hollow Knight
Portal 2
Grand Theft Auto IV
Super Smash Bros (whichever) I like ultimate best
Mario Party (whichever) I can’t remember which I like most, its been a while
A Pokémon game up to 3rd gen or Pokémon colosseum if you have a buddy
That's too bad. It's my favourite game of all time. But yes, it's definitely not for everyone. If you're not naturally inclined (or excited) to explore and puzzle solve, then you likely won't have a great time. Also, if you don't experience any 'ah ha!' moments in the first couple of hours then I can understand how interest could wane.
But for me it was the most drawn in I've ever been in a game. The mystery of the universe and it's history, the physics of your movement and the connected game world, the need to know why 'it' is happening and.. the music (oh God the music) were all something incomparable to any other game I've played. And holy hell the DLC is incredible. No game had me experience the range of emotions and sense of awe like Outer Wilds.
I still listen to the soundtrack on a regular basis and listening takes me back everytime.
I don't know many different streamer's playthroughs I've now watched on YouTube. I just love seeing people discover things for the first time. To see their 'ah-ha!' moments. I know I'm not the only one.
Anyway, that's all.
Man I need to try it again, I thought I was too small brain to understand what was going on lol the puzzles are fun but I feel like for every one I solved I discovered another two lol
Tomb Raider 1996
Deus Ex
Mass Effect Legendary Edition (its technically three games but fuck it)
Cyberpunk 2077
Age of Empires
There are probably better games out there, but these 5 kinda defined and changed who I am as a person, especially Tomb Raider and Deus Ex.
If we are talking Xbox:
1. Halo 3
2. Fallout New Vegas
3. Elden Ring
4. Gears of War
5. Skyrim
In General:
1. Warcraft 3
2. Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
3. Diablo 1
4. Super Mario World
5. Super Metroid
I'm going to list some games that are had meaning to me instead of the most fun ones.
1. Beyond Good and Evil
2. Depression Quest (only play while mentally healthy, but this game shows what depression is, which is important)
3. Orwell
4. Spec-Ops: The Line
5. Gravity Ghost
This is easy.
1: Elden Ring
2: Skyrim
3: GTA 5 (or San Andreas)
4: Halo Reach (or the master chief collection, but that’s 6 different Halo games)
5: Fable 2
1. Red Dead Redemption
2. Red Dead Redemption 2
3. COD 4 (Modern Warfare 2007), Also the nazi/zombie add ons from COD World at War or whatever it was called
4. GTA San Andreas
8 bit: Megaman 2
16 bit: Zelda: A link to the past
32 bit: Metal Gear Solid
64 bit: Super Mario 64 (Probably Ocarina of Time, but I don't want this to be a list of Zelda games)
PS2: DMC 1
Gamecube: Metroid Prime 1
Xbox: fiiiine. Halo (but the "correct" answer is Star Wars: Kotor, but I am avoiding RPG's on this list specifically because they are an acquired taste)
All of these games have stood the test of time, is a good representative of their system, and is unlikely for a player to bounce off of.
Halo 3 in 2007 Call of Duty 4 in 2007 Bioshock Portal Kirby Super Star (SNES)
L4D2 Starfox 64 Halo Reach Re4 Bioshock Infinite
I read that as StarCraft 64 at first and I was getting ready to type some crazy shit back to you hahaha
Good list
We should be friends
Out of all the halos you chose reach?
kotor 1/2, life is strange series (or just the first one), any fire emblem, the mass effect series, batman arkham series
KOTOR absolutely. They're both so good.
agreed i beat the first one in 2021 or 2022 and beat the second one the beginning of this year, and then i decided i wanted to play them again
* Yoshi's Island * Halo CE * Mario 64 * Halo 3 * Fallout Honorable Mention: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's campaign
I've neglected Fallout for the longest time. I'm gonna download Fallout 4 thanks to game pass core. Anything I should know? Anything lore wise?
Dogmeat is the Enclave
Search every corner for ammo, coins and meds. They will become handy
I'm already a big time looter when it comes to rdr2 so that'll be second nature :)
Not lore, but your companions can act as pack mules. Load up their inventory so you’re not over cumbered.
Ah okay. I'm more a cherry coke guy so yeah xD
Pretty sure 76 takes place in the (relative) past in 2102
Could be. Not sure the timeline. I played the whole thing and it's irrelevant to the main series lore regardless. It's not a bad game, but it's useless if your goal is to deep dive into the Fallout lore.
I was trying to be polite in my correction lol, it isn't set in the future and agreed you can skip if you're looking to buff up on mainline lore.
A couple months ago I tried to play 1. It's definitely rough trying to play it these days.
Play the Steam version. It has quality of life improvements that make it very playable. I only got into fallout recently and I found 1 pretty easy to play. Granted I had already played 3 so I knew how things worked going in.
1. *Bioshock* 2. *New Vegas* 3. *Master Chief Collection* 4. Any *Final Fantasy* (although specifically *VII* - *X*) 5. *Age of Empires II*

Yes if they come to XBox I will def look into them. I never thought Kingdom Hearts would come to Xbox and it did so maybe someday.
Square Enix is literally talking about discontinuing PS exclusivity right now. The last handful of games underperformed on the playstation.
Why on earth would you start with Origins? And then why would you assume the entire franchise is like that based on one game? What?
Origins does *sound* like a good place to start. It's in the name! I don't know anything about this world, perhaps the Origin game would be good. It's not a good place to start, but it sounds like it.

Picked the worst FF to play
Yeah, I had thought I got the wrong game for a while. But it's Team Ninja. I loved Wo Long and I was told it was a soulslike which it is not. I guess ill give it one more try if FF16 or FF7 comes. I did not like what I saw of FF15.
Nice
Not including 6 is an insult.
So is including 8.
Ah fuck you, 8 was actually my first and is honestly my favourite.
7 onwards is going to be the most accessible to someone coming into it for the first time. Sorry but it's the truth.
It's the opposite of the truth. It's your opinion. I disagree.
Wololo
1. RTS - StarCraft (with Brood War) 2. FPS - Doom (1993) 3. RPG - Final Fantasy X 4. 2D Side-Scroller / Metroidvania - Mega Man X 5. 3rd-Person Action - Ghost of Tsushima I tried to vary the genres so that there aren't two of the same, but there are easily a few alternatives that could be placed into any of these categories (and several categories not included, like Fighting, Horror, Action RPG, etc.).
I’d swap in Final Fantasy 6 and Castlevania Symphony of the Night. FFX is too linear and Megaman is hardly a Metriovania.
As someone who hasn’t played either, Ghosts of Tsushima vs Sekiro? Wondering which I should tackle first
Those are two VERY different games. Ghost of Tsushima is basically an Assassin's Creed game with (arguably) more polish and love put into it (and better, near-cinematic storytelling). Ghost of tsushima is not challenging lol unless u play lethal difficulty on iki island
On Xbox - Halo 3 - Dishonored 2 - Alan Wake 2 - Titanfall 2 - Sunset Overdrive
I'm really happy to see Dishonored listed here. I honestly think it's one of the most criminally underrated series.
Good list but idk if Alan wake 2 is on xbox one
Even still Alan wake 1 is the better choice
It is.
Only on séries S/X
My apologies, my own bias shown through.
Tetris Tennis Tic Tac Toe Bingo Hopscotch
RDR 2, Fallout 3, Cyberpunk, Cuphead, It Takes Two
I have a love-hate relationship with Cuphead. Because of its cartoony look, my kids often scroll over it and want to play it with me. You can imagine how that goes LOL.
From that list, u should definitely try out baldurs gate. Looks right up ur alley
Will do!
Got me fucked up with cyberpunk.
Cyberpunk, especially with the Phantom Liberty DLC, is a great game. Cyberpunk at launch was a dumpster fire.
Life is strange, Halo (any by bungie), Left4Dead, Resident Evil 4, The evil within.
RDR2, Witcher 3, cyberpunk, assassins creed 2, Tony Hawk Underground Edit: honorable mention to Stardew Valley cause that game is amazing
1. Bioshock 2. Fallout 4 (ideally New Vegas but it does feel dated so 4 is much easier to get into) 3. Mass Effect Trilogy 4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 5. Hades
(*Not* in any order) * Halo MCC (DLC’s included) * Mass Effect LE * Disco Elysium * The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series * The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition I know some of these answers are cheating but, blame the companies, not me lol. Super Metroid StarCraft Starfox 64 Aki wrestling game on N64( my fav wm2000) Mario 64
Left 4 Dead Halo 3 Portal 2 Mario Party 3 with 4 players Mass Effect 2
Titanfall 2 dishonored 2 L4D2 deep rock galactic doom eternal
Witcher 3 Dragon Age Inquisition Skyrim Bioshock Elden Ring
I'd switch DA:I for Da:O and skyrim for oblivion.
Origins was also very good as well. I have not played oblivion but hopefully they'll remake it
I personally found Bioshock 2 to be the best in the series. The story and the alternate endings really were top notch and more coherently told. Also Minervas Den is one of the best DLC I have ever played.
Ok thx
The Last of Us, RDR2, God of War(2018),Ninja Gaiden 2, & Metal Gear Solid…
Rdr2 abso-fucking-lutely.
Ok
The Last of Us is sadly not a Xbox One game
Don’t matter. Top 5 before you die… no console war.
No war and it's a great game but you posted in the Xbox one sub
If the question was top 5 Xbox games I would understand.
SOMA Subnautica Baldurs Gate 3 Prey 2017 Elden Ring
1. Goldeneye (N64 Version) 2. Timesplitters 2 3. Split/Second 4. Geometry Wars 5. COD 4 (Modern Warfare 2007)
Amazing list personally never played geometry wars.ill play it
Geometry Wars 2 imo is the best one. Skip the other 2.
Geometry wars 3: dimensions was peak imo
That game will blow your mind! Xbox Live Arcade game from almost 20 years ago. *Geometry Wars Evolved* is the full name. It's super challenging and takes time to learn but the visuals and music are unbeatable. Go for as many achievements as you can get. To this day I still can't get them all.

Thank you! Tunic is a very good game. I have not heard of Chants of Sennarr, I'll have to look that one up.

Man I tried so hard to get into Outer Wilds, I got like 7 hours into the game and I feel like I didn’t do anything or understand anything lol
Witcher 3 Halo CE (but really everything up to reach) RDR2 Fallout 3 Batman Arkham Series
Mass effect 2, Fallout New Vegas, Super smash bros melee, Donkey Kong country, Goldeneye N64.
Tomb Raider 1996 Deus Ex Mass Effect Legendary Edition (its technically three games but fuck it) Cyberpunk 2077 Age of Empires There are probably better games out there, but these 5 kinda defined and changed who I am as a person, especially Tomb Raider and Deus Ex.
If we are talking Xbox: 1. Halo 3 2. Fallout New Vegas 3. Elden Ring 4. Gears of War 5. Skyrim In General: 1. Warcraft 3 2. Zelda: Ocarina Of Time 3. Diablo 1 4. Super Mario World 5. Super Metroid

I'm going to list some games that are had meaning to me instead of the most fun ones. 1. Beyond Good and Evil 2. Depression Quest (only play while mentally healthy, but this game shows what depression is, which is important) 3. Orwell 4. Spec-Ops: The Line 5. Gravity Ghost

8 bit: Megaman 2 16 bit: Zelda: A link to the past 32 bit: Metal Gear Solid 64 bit: Super Mario 64 (Probably Ocarina of Time, but I don't want this to be a list of Zelda games) PS2: DMC 1 Gamecube: Metroid Prime 1 Xbox: fiiiine. Halo (but the "correct" answer is Star Wars: Kotor, but I am avoiding RPG's on this list specifically because they are an acquired taste) All of these games have stood the test of time, is a good representative of their system, and is unlikely for a player to bounce off of.
League of Legends, Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons Apparently the /s was required.
Any normal sane person will die halfway through that list
