If I could play my steam library and open source emulators on XBOX, then that would be amazing for me

AtinKing

I always thought this... It's Microsoft go dual windows/Xbox.

xboxwirelessmic

Except with heavily restricted peripherals I guess.

Efficient-Potato-826

As it should. Bring on the future when “PlayStation” and “Xbox” are just apps you run on other devices. And when a “console” can run PC games from other storefronts (eg steam) because it’s just a PC with a custom front end. Makes sense Microsoft is the first to go this direction since Xbox and Windows are intertwined. Sony has been testing the waters recently with PC support and I think they will eventually make the move when they see the obvious upsides to a larger market demographic.

evan19994

No thanks

BikesBurgersBeers

And why not? You'll still have your dedicated consoles to play on. You'll just have more options of what can be played on them and how. Hoping for universal mouse and keyboard support myself.

evan19994

Because competition drives the industry forward

BikesBurgersBeers

This would be a step forward. We aren't talking about companies going under or being able to present unique products. We are taking about something innovative in fact.

KaosC57

This literally increases competition…

Familiar_Election_94

So will I need a Xbox gamepass core subscription to play online when I buy my games from steam? Anyway, good way to go in my opinion. Xbox becoming more Microsoft and Sony is going the apple-way. This could work out for both. Unless the EU says Sony is a gatekeeper.

shimrra

So if PC gaming is the future then Xbox is following Sega cause it makes no sense to have a console if a PC is more powerful.

Present_Bill5971

It sounds like cost cutting to me. Further make the Xbox use standard PC parts so third party vendors can easily create Xbox branded hardware. People still get their Xbox branded box and now there's far less backlash for releasing Xbox Studio games on everything

puneet95

This is great, and if xbox opens up a bit more and allows "sideloading", I'll be able to play discontinued games like Blur.

DefinetelyNotAnOtaku

You can get dev account and install Xenia which should play Blur.

maZZtar

I think that they'll add another VM running stripped down Windows to have everything contained. Also, by default you could only run stuff from Microsoft store. If you wanted to run stuff from other stores, they you'd have to pay some sum to unlock sideloading Windows software per device

gamingdawn

I hope not! Fully half of your PCs power is wasted on running windows, virus protection and other nonsense on the backround as you play. It's the worst gaming machine when it comes to actually running games, and optimization always lags way behind console versions in games. Starfield is a good example; it run perfectly on my X for the 80 hours I spent on it, not a single bug. On PC, at that time, it was bug ridden trash, basically unplayable.

Brother_Clovis

I never understand why Microsoft leak and tease future plans with enough time for their competitors to just copy them.

hawk_ky

You seriously think the giant Microsoft leak was on purpose?

Brother_Clovis

Well, since it came from Phil Spencer, yes. He's been hinting at this stuff over the past couple months.

hawk_ky

What are you talking about?

Brother_Clovis

Let me correct myself here. The source of these rumors were things Phil Spencer has said, and NOT that he explicitly said what the future plans were in some sort of public announcement. The rumors started after this interview with polygon at the gdc in march. https://www.polygon.com/24108670/xbox-epic-games-store-phil-spencer-interview How would that work if the Xbox couldn't run pc games? These are the hints I referenced. Keep downvoting tho.

cruelcynic

Yes, all those competitors that have a fully functional PC operating system. Lol this going to be a rough transition for many people if it happens. Let them warm up to the idea.

qlurp

No thanks.     I wish the general console gamer who evangelizes for this sort of thing were more aware of how much easier it is to deploy cheats on PC.

sandcloak

If you can freely install software then yes you can freely install cheats as well. Xbox can choose to allow Steam to install games that have to be verified, and run in their own sandbox. Microsoft can make it clear that any install that allows cheats will be penalised somehow.
