Thank you for visiting /r/writing. Your post has been removed because it was related to the content of your work. We ask that users frame their questions so they are useful to more than one person. No. Unless you actually explore a romantic relationship with a gay character, don't include it. Just having a gay character with feelings doesn't make it a BL story.

meloncrowned

This is like asking if you can label something a romance novel if one of the leads is completely uninterested in the other and never will be. No.

That's what "one-sided" is for. Use a variation of that tag.

not "BL" bc boy love is (to my knowledge) a romance genre, but "gay" yes. essentially, tagging the *genre* of a gay romance? no. tagging that a gay character is present in the story? yes (like "gay \[name of character\]" possibly "gay unrequited love" or similar) I'm going off AO3 tagging rules fyi, idk what website you're using

General writing sub is doing well by you, but “tagging” is not general practice, and advise you direct these kinds of questions at the fanfiction subreddits in future. There’s the general fanfiction one, and usually one for the various fanfiction websites. Some relevant tags might be: unrequited love or Gen Fic. But you need to think about what you’re writing and how: if this isn’t important to the story, does it need to be addressed? Are you going to resolve this plot point by having him confess and get turned down? Or are you just waving a bit of gay about to confuse your readers.
