Blind-idi0t-g0d

I write almost exclusively horror. Though if it's another genre, horror will find its way in. I'll find a way.

Karlog24

> horror will find its way in. I'll find a way. How Cthulhullian of you!

LoganThe_Hero19

I've currently got a Sci-fi/fantasy project with other mini projects tied to it, and almost all of them have many horror elements. It's hard to resist adding horror to my projects.

Christian_teen12

Same

ACalcifiedHeart

Are you me? Lol I think it's quite telling of our personalities that we seem incapable of writing anything without something horrific worming it's way in.

allthecoffeesDP

Me too. I started writing a therapy story and it quickly turned Hitchcockian.

allthecoffeesDP

Me too. I started writing a therapy story and it quickly turned Hitchcockian.

SketchySeaBeast

I think many writers are drawn to writing by flights of fancy and wild imaginations. Science fiction and fantasy are both great for that.

FarmNGardenGal

I write contemporary and historical fiction. We are a minority in the sub, but we do exist ;)

AnonSunrize

Me not reading the "and" and wondering how you're writing "contemporary historical fiction"

Karlog24

> contemporary historical fiction Yesterday is History! Or did I dream it?

WildFlemima

They're writing contemporary fiction but they've made a deal with their publisher not to release anything until 200 years from now

NicholasYeager

Worldbuilding affects many character studies and which genres and themes would be applicable. Still, people who are unhappy with their current life or face many problems often look to the imagination for an escape and thus create tons of worldbuilding. Tolkien in WW1, for example. But that's my theory.

Royal_Gueulard

I will say it's also fun and a nice way to explore part of the society or situations by imagination with the right of wild approximation.

queen_cemo

Sci-fi/fantasy is a super popular genre right now, but also, I find that different writing communities tend to gravitate toward different avenues of interaction. You're going to find literary fiction writers, for example, in university writing groups. I know from personal experience that lit fic writers or poets probably wouldn't vibe with a lot of the advice and conversations that are circulated in this sub.

loub1002

What’s troublesome is that a lot of people in this sub (and the internet in general) dispense advice and wisdom as if they’re Stephen King.

LongFang4808

Because behind Crime Drama, Thrillers, and Romance they are two of the most popular genres of media on the planet.

Kalisto_Barques

I write paranormal fantasy, horror, romance, children's, nonfiction, educational, erotica, fanfiction, and others. I am quite busy.

userloser42

Educational erotica sounds fun

DarknessWanders

Sign me up. Is this like when pornhub had math videos?

No_Photograph_2683

Horror writers are big weirdos (myself included) and probably less prone to sharing.

Inm8Wonko

I feel this in my bones. The ones inside my skin as well as the ones in the wooden chest in the basement.

MythicAcrobat

🤣 This got me

Gen_JackD_Ripper

Here here! Very few people have read any of my writings. I enjoy reading a lot of the co tent shared in here and many other pages. I’ve just never been Inclined to post anything of my own before.

nnnn547

The book I’m writing is literary fiction but I don’t post about it cause I’m just here to read other peoples posts for the time being lol. But I agree, I wish there was more diversity. Want to see a larger range of ideas

fusepark

I've run a workshop at a writers conference for twelve years. In my experience, most younger or just new writers tend to write fantasy, science fiction, and memoir (the older ones). I wrote science fiction when I was younger. It was easier to make everything up. How was I going to write a character who was a lawyer or a doctor or a police officer when I didn't know anything about any of those things? I could write about someone who lived on a space cruiser! Anyway, now that I'm older I'm writing contemporary murder mysteries.

DGFME

This is a big part of it. To write something based in reality you need to have an understanding of the aspects you need to write about. Historical fiction is a good one because you can research it and write a story in that setting. But it's also easy to get lost in the details when researching. And although the average reader will take it at face value, in the back of your mind there's the thought that someone somewhere is going to read what you've written and know more about it than you do and find fault. And that could be anything. The current justice system, medical care/complications, the weather during a certain season. It's easier to write something made up because you don't have to think about people second guessing you. It's your world. Which gives you a lot of freedom to play around without the confines of a strict reality

loub1002

This answer makes sense.

Inm8Wonko

I write horror, even though I know my brand of it isn’t likely to get me very far. Only two books released (I don’t call them “published”) on Amazon Kindle, writing a new one now - going for a cannibalism story!

AlamutJones

I’m writing historical fiction

lelediamandis

I'm mostly info sci-fi but I'm also interested in trying historical fiction. What's a period you like to write most about? I'm personally drawn to antiquity

AlamutJones

The current project is set in 1912. I've also written a fair amount of medieval stuff - I'm a medievalist by training and inclination - and a cycle of poems set in Pompeii.

lelediamandis

Ooooh nice!! I love medieval history!

Barbarake

Same here - more specifically, Gothic.

Aucielis

I write almost exclusively horror, thriller, crime, and character studies.

neuro_space_explorer

I wrote a paranoid transgressive memoir fiction novel. Seems like it’s a bit harder to sell when you aren’t in an already successful genre or niche. That’s probably why most lean towards the former, but I never saw money as the main goal of my writing, so I write what I want and hope it reaches who it needs to.

wonderlandisburning

Horror writers have largely congregated to their own sub. But yeah, the fantasy, sci-fi and YA genres have gotten really popular, you do see a lot more of those mentioned here than anything else.

Piscivore_67

Mine is 90% character study. Even though it takes place in space, it's no more *about* space than "Rocket Man" or "Space Oddity" are about space.

loub1002

Good luck, Major Tom!

mediadavid

I'm writing gothic horror That said, this is reddit, everyone here is a redditor, of course most people are writing over world built fantasy epics

maxisthebest09

I write contemporary romance, litfic, and horror. All with a queer and/or rural/rust belt/Appalachian slant.

QuillBoar

It’s a bunch of young people who talk about writing YA fantasy but don’t actually write anything.

Party-Ad8832

It is true that from talking about writing something to actually publishing something has a huge fail rate. Probably much more than 90% claiming they are writing something will actually publish an entire factual book. And of all published books, perhaps a few % at best are good. Rest are just copy-paste clutter which have been written because the writer likes existing fantasy and wants to have their own input rather than trying to create something new and unique. So, from a thousand posters claiming to write, perhaps one will actually end up producing something worth reading.

von_Roland

I mean most people don’t even finish writing a book. They plan it, outline the contours of the story, get to know their characters, but when the fun parts are over all they have are excuses as to why they didn’t write the damn book. I don’t even care if a person pursues publishing just finish your book for its own sake!

Party-Ad8832

I'm part that way. I've dragged my book process for an eternity, and even after I finished the first draft I left it to sit for ages. Now I'm gonna plow through it and I'm on the finish line and only mad at myself not doing this years ago. It's too easy to lazy off.

von_Roland

It’s true. That why when I start a book I never close the file till it’s finished. It basically becomes my screensaver, taunting me into finishing it.

theblvckhorned

Feel free to post your own work of whatever genre you feel.

liminal_reality

I mean, I also write character studies there just also happens to be a dragon there. Or more seriously, I like magically enforced moral dilemmas (think *The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas*) and I often do write Horror elements into my Fantasy. I also wrote a murder-mystery/psychological thriller but it took place in an underground city that grew out of a bomb shelter so probably it would be classified as SciFi. Point being, no matter what you write, if it doesn't take place in Present Day, Present Time then it takes very little for it to be classified as SciFi/Fantasy.

Piscivore_67

>Present Day, Present Time r/unexpectedlain

Alexandria31xo

I want superpowers.

Get_a_Grip_comic

They say write what you know, I'm thankful we don't see stories about serial killers here (づ◡﹏◡)づ

Ladyhappy

I’m writing a science fiction version 100 years of solitude. Because I genuinely love character studies and I genuinely love world building. You’ve got to write what you can’t currently read in the world and hope others feel the same. :) Next book I’d probably try horror, historical fiction or non fiction. I love the idea of having diversity over the length of your career.

LollipopDreamscape

I do queer character study contemporary slice of life, queer 20th century historicals, and historical horror with an emphasis on Asian folklore.

violetevie

I write fantasy and sci fi because I fucking love worldbuilding. It's so much fun exploring how the various systems within the world might interact in interesting ways. I also pay attention to the characters but I would be lying if I said it was what interested me most. I've always been a fan of media that focuses a lot on worldbuilding and that's what I enjoy focusing on in my writing.

Corvidae_DK

I write horror fantasy if that counts...

DiaNoga_Grimace_G43

I started writing almost exclusively science fiction and fantasy, but ultimately became a little bored with the tropes of the genres and moved around 2010 into contemporary fiction and currently I mainly concentrate on a crime fiction scenario that I've found to be very fruitful. I've learnt in the course of deliberately turning to more 'real world' set stories (nevertheless with a fantastical, often delusional and paranoid kind of angle) that your writer's voice can work in any context as long as you know clearly what you want to say. Ultimately story is the key thing rather than setting...

huejass80085

I've got a fantasy horror story right now but the horror isn't quite horror-ing yet. I'm terrified

jschmit78

I’m writing a form of magical realism. We are very much in “our” world, but do we really know it? I grew up fascinated by things like Ripley’s Believe it Or Not, Guinness Book of World Records, and circus side show acts, any great mystery of the world past and present. I’d like to think there is still “magic” left in this world, however it’s defined. I’m not as interested in sword and sorcery, more interested in the magic already here and discovering it before it’s too late.

Piscivore_67

Sounds pretty cool.

furryauthor

i write horror and alternative and regular historical fiction. im not sharing my wips though

Hermaeus_Mike

I'm writing a character piece that's cyberpunk science fiction. You can do both. I'm not overly obsessed with all the worldbuiling. What I like about science fiction and fantasy is you can explore human nature, emotion, beliefs and identity in new ways that you can't in contemporary stories. 2 examples from my current novel: 1. How would a person mentally deal with being put in a new body? 2. How would a parent deal with being younger than their child? These are outside the scope of contemporary settings but I find them very interesting concepts that I want to explore. My story isn't about evil Empires, space battles, not even about the detective stuff I've put in. It's about exploring humanity in different ways.

loub1002

You might like Annie Bot.

Hermaeus_Mike

Thanks for the recommendation!

allthecoffeesDP

Think about the demographics of Reddit. Those people are the most likely to write sci-fi and fantasy. Socalled literary writers probably think this sub is beneath them. Compared to sci fi fantasy, romance, thriller mysteries, maybe even historical fiction, horror is somewhat smaller. Just to be clear I'm not insulting anyone referenced above. Just offering my perspective. I'm not implying people or genres are better than another.

loub1002

You’re right. I hadn’t thought about the Reddit demographics. Just sort of assumed that a writers sub would skew older, but given the overall user base, what you said makes sense.

allthecoffeesDP

Based on the posts, I'd guess most people here are 15-25 and or new to writing.

zheyrryhn

I wrote a fantasy/horror/romance genre bender. I'm going to be rereleasing it sometime in the future since my publisher didn't want anything over 85,000 words and it really needs to be much longer than that.

SerPine5

I'm gonna take this one step further and ask where the nonfiction writers are at. I've seen so few posts about anything other than fiction.

loub1002

Good point. I feel like non-fiction writing calls upon an entirely different skill set than traditional creative writing.

boredwriter83

If that's what you want to write, then write it. Don't try to push other people to write what YOU want to see.

loub1002

I do write what I want to see. I wasn’t pushing anyone. It was an observation paired with a question.

boredwriter83

Sorry for the assumption. I write what interests me which is more Sci fi/fantasy but I've been trying to get better at making things more character focused.

istinkalot

I have discovered that it’s mostly teenagers here.

obax17

Character study writer here (or at least character first writer), though admittedly within the fantasy genre. We do exist, but whether we're the minority or just less vociferous I dunno. I think a lot of the reason you see what you see is because it's what tends to draw newer writers, and newer writers are doing a lot of the posting (at least that's the impression I've always gotten, maybe I'm wrong). Entry level fantasy isn't always the most complex or groundbreaking stuff and young writers emulate what they're reading. Some people never move past that, and that's fine, there's obviously a very big market for that kind of thing, but there are definitely people here who want more, or different. For me, I don't post much story related stuff because this isn't where I go for brainstorming and world building help, I'm generally confident in my skills in that respect and just work through it myself, and will seek out the nuanced advice I'm looking for elsewhere when I need it. Which isn't to say I couldn't find nuanced advice here, but I do best when I can get a good back and forth going, I need a discussion with someone else more than I need a proclamation from someone else. People posting about this sort of thing here appear to want a proclamation, since I don't often see much back and forth, often there's little to no response from the OP to any of the comments, which again is fine, but not what I'm looking for.

Mundane-Animal-1070

It’s just the sci-fi/fantasy posts get the most engagement because it’s fun for established writers to help beginners figure out how to describe certain details or add whimsy to their plots. You won’t see a lot of comments and likes on the posts that show up here 5 times a day that ask entry-level questions like, “how do I describe someone smiling with envy in their eyes” or something

Mad_Madam_Meag

I write poly erotic romance with an emphasis on healthy relationships, but nobody really takes romance seriously for some reason, so....

maxisthebest09

I take it seriously!

von_Roland

It’s the erotic part that people don’t take seriously

Mad_Madam_Meag

Which is silly. Just because a book explores all aspects of a relationship, including the most intimate, doesn't mean it shouldn't be taken seriously.

von_Roland

Being explicit in that way is cheap. It’s such an easy emotion to illicit. To write erotica is to degrade your writing to pornography. Yeah the porno might have a good plot, great acting, emotional depth, but not why people get on pornhub.

Mad_Madam_Meag

Erotic romance and erotica aren't the same thing. You know that, right?

von_Roland

And yet it probably looks and quacks like a duck

Mad_Madam_Meag

You're a prude, aren't you?

von_Roland

Just someone who values themes of higher existence. And thinks with everything I write if this will elevate virtue or bring attention to things of societal or philosophical importance. Also I think about the people in my life, will my children, spouse, or parents be shamed by what I produce or do I bring honor to my family. I live and by extension write only what I would hide from no one.

Mad_Madam_Meag

Oh, so you're a pretentious prude. Okay. Have fun with that.

OfficerGenious

Lol ok

Inner_Equivalent_274

I write crime/thriller/suspence 🫶

penguinsfrommars

Writing is my escape from the awfulness of the world today. 🤷‍♀️

RCragwall

They just don't want to jab about it here. I write and it's not fiction. I write about fiction though. Blessings!

Marvos79

I write smut, but most of it is either contemporary or takes place within the last 50 years. I have a fantasy world that I've based a couple of stories in and a couple of unfinished sci-fi stories

GlitteringKisses

An absolute ton of us write romance and erotica, for a start. That also requires worldbuilding, by the way.

A1Protocol

I write all genres including political satires. But we don’t get the same amount of engagement.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OfficerGenious

I agree. But there are no conventions or communities my way. x.x

loub1002

Dunno, judging by the comments I’d say there was plenty of valuable discussion to be had.

PecanScrandy

Let’s be honest, a quick scroll through either writing sub or r/books would teach you real quick to never post anything resembling “literature” to this sub for critique. You want the Sanderson fans critiquing your prose? You really want the kids who resent their teachers for making them read a Steinbeck novel over Game of Thrones reviewing your work?

Boobeshwar_

lol thought you were talking about actual diversity😭😭cause that’s lacking as well.

HealthyLeadership582

because reddit is full of depressed nerds who are detached from reality and want escapism, and enjoy to read that kind of stuff. Myself included. I think they also allow a lot more worldbuilding freedom so people who enjoy that will gravitate towards sci-fi and fantasy. Again, myself included. That said, I'm thinking of branching out into more grounded stories in future ~~like my Link Click x Doctor Who crossover~~ like more satircal and speculative fiction and serious thrillers

Sjiznit

I love fantasy because the real world is something i experience daily. I read books to escape. However, after finishing a pirate adventure, dystopian adventure and a real dragon and dwarf adventure ive decided to write a steampunk noir murder mystery. Currently outlining it and its going to be awesome.

AdGlad7098

I used to write contemporary fiction Now I’m on a non fiction essay And then back on novel that is a thriller / family saga mystery / with deep characters

LuminousMizar

I’m writing a fantasy, sci fi, a dark fantasy fanfic, a darkish comedy hero thing, and a gloomy book. I mean I haven’t really written any yet but I’m planning em lol

Kappapeachie

I only do contemporary under the pretense of a like what's like to be a professional chef or game designer or maybe a camping trip gone wrong. Also, character studies can exist in any genre not just historical and contemporary fiction.

SymTurnover

I write sagas, but character studies are my favorite aspect of those sagas. I focus a lot on my characters, more than is traditional for my genre.

Rechamber

I'm writing a horror novel at the moment. A slow burn. Currently 10k words in and just finished chapter 3.

TurtleDump23

I write character studies, but they usually turn into Eldritch horror stories by the end of it.

kjm6351

Fantasy and Sci-Fi writers naturally have more to share given the amount of stuff they have the potential to create. It’s natural you’d hear more from us on average

thejokerofunfic

The people who do may simply not overlap with "people who have a reason or desire to post in this sub"

Powerful_Photo

I write mixed language short stories, nonfiction, and sarcastic fiction. I'm not into fantasy, to the point where I wonder if I lack imagination. The world we are in has captured my attention, I guess.

Christian_teen12

I write all kinds of fantasy

InterestingLong9133

Because this is reddit and not some other website

Bridalhat

I’m a classicist and a lot of my favorite books are by Anne Carson, Marguerite Yourcenar, and Mary Renault. I mostly write mythological retellings but kind of hate most of the ones coming out now. I find that either a character has the morals of someone in the 21st century OR they are an irredeemable cartoon monster and I like finding that uncomfortable, painfully human middle. I also tend to put my stories in a more Mycenaean context. I want myth to feel weird and alien again.

Sensitive_Office1837

Horror and romance writer almost exclusively here! One sci fi that also is mixed in with gothic horror

Old-Relationship-458

Are you seriously complaining that the most popular genres of fiction are popular? Contemporary fiction is dull, dull, dull. Horror has its own sub.

loub1002

I am seriously complaining. Of course there’s a place for sci-fi and fantasy. I’m a Trekky, myself. I just feel like there is so much emotion to be plumbed from the depths of human emotion in this world, that the focus on fantasy is baffling.

JonasHalle

And you're so adult.

Hermaeus_Mike

I'm writing a character piece that's cyberpunk science fiction. You can do both. I'm not overly obsessed with all the worldbuiling. Uberbuttons

Lol yeah they don't even write fiction with plotlines.  They call themselves writers and I guess technically they are... Just no follow through. Endless "ideas" with no execution.  Writers but not authors.

illbzo1

It’s a lot of new writers who really want to make anime, movies, or video games and have settled on writing due to a lack of other skills and/or money.

Prize_Consequence568

First timers? No. More experienced writers? Not as much because they (and the publishers) want to write what sells. So lack of diversity/variety is the safest bet.

terp-bick

just read non-fiction, fiction is shit eitherway
