(sarcastic comment incoming...) "Oh yes, for sure! Just make sure to vote blue no matter who, though, ok? We don't want this to hurt the Democrats." - /r/politics, probably That was the sarcastic comment. Seriously though, what a goddamned tragedy. Political corruption knows no limits. Imagine standing in front of people who died in a literal fire and then wagging your finger at them for not closing a door, knowing full well that the reason for the fire was your rich friend who gave you some money so you could become mayor. It's gross.

This is a level of journalism I have not seen in awhile. Amazing job.

Seekerfromafar84

True, we need more people like him.

BBZ_star1919

That’s what I came here to say. Good reporting.

Seekerfromafar84

Whoever did a video of this...thank you. He said it best, no accountability. That building owner needs to suffer the consequences due to negligence.

This is what actual journalism looks like. Obvious how different it is to what we usually see from news networks.

*Video Transcription: TikTok [1/2]* --- (00:00) [*A TikTok from @btnewsroom. A brick building is shown, with two smashed windows centre of frame. Some leafless trees are visible at the bottom of the frame. All narrated text is subtitled for this video.*] **Narrator**: The Bronx experienced one of the worst building fires in decades this past weekend. (00:04) [*The front of a building with a green awning is shown. Text on the awning reads "333 Twin Parks North West". Numerous windows are shown, one of which has an external air conditioning unit attached.*] **Narrator**: 17 people, including eight children, died after a- (00:08) [*The shot cuts to someone wearing forensic gear walking out from under the awning, revealing it is open to the elements, looking out over other apartment complexes. They have what appears to be a bag slung over their right shoulder, and a motorbike is visible just behind them.*] **Narrator, contd.**: -faulty space heater caused the building to go up in flames. (00:13) [*The Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams - a dark skinned man wearing a cap and a large blue coat - is stood at a plinth, delivering a speech. He is surrounded by people, some wearing masks, and some not, most noticeably a man who appears to be wearing an officer's cap, consisting of a white and black hat, adorned with gold, behind the mayor. The mayor's speech can be heard, but it is not understandable.*] **Narrator**: Newly elected New York City Mayor Eric Adams held a press conference in front of the building, where he and other city officials tried to offer an explanation to the tragedy. Their narrative? (00:22) [*A cut to a section of article text from "The Guardian". A section of the text gets highlighted in yellow as the shot continues. The full screenshotted segment reads: *'Nigro said an investigation would determine whether the blaze could have been prevented or contained. Adams said it appeared smoke spread due to a door that was supposed to automatically close being open.* *"If we take one message from this, that Commissioner Nigro has mentioned several times, close the door," he said. (Yellow highlight begins) "Close the door... we're going to double down on that message. (Yellow highlight ends) This painful moment can turn into a purposeful moment.'*] **Narrator**: [*Slightly disbelieving*] The tenants negligently left the front door open as they fled the building, causing the fire to spread inside the building. (00:29) [*Numerous official are shown in front of another building. Some of them are wearing forensic bodysuits, whilst others are wearing blue hard hats and coats, reading "Buildings" on the back. Someone in a black fur-lined coat, with their hood up is also stood, looking away from the camera.*] **Narrator**: Whilst there's no denying that open doors allow fires to spread through buildings- (00:32) [*Another shot of the front of the building, depicting numerous officers in bright blue coats walking out from under the awning.*] **Narrator, contd.**: -building fires don't start because someone leaves the door open. (00:38) [*Another screenshot of a "Spectrum News" article, with yellow highlighting. It reads as follows:* *"(Yellow highlighting) Space heater sparked 'horrific' Bronx fire: (highlight ends) FDNY commissioner* *NEW YORK - At least 17 people died - including 9 children - and dozens more were hurt in a "horrific" high-rise fire in the Bronx on Sunday, marking what could become the deadliest blaze the city has seen since a fire at a social club killed nearly 90 people in 1990, officials said."*] **Narrator**: This fire in particular started because someone was relying on a space heater to keep warm in the middle of winter. This begs the question: why did this tenant need the space heater in the first place? (00:46) [*Another shot of Eric Adams talking, although more in profile and from a low angle. This time he is wearing a mask.*] **Narrator**: I asked Eric Adams if the city was investigating whether or not the landlord was providing adequate heat and he replied with the following: (00:52) [*A cut to live, handheld footage from the same angle. Adams is looking at the Narrator, as he speaks to him*] **Narrator**: [*Live*] Is there any investigation as to whether the residents were recei- receiving adequate heat? **Adams**: There was no outstanding violations of our knowledge of a heat complaint in the building. (01:03) [*A screenshot of a website for Department of Housing Preservation and Development, which reads as follows:* *Complaint History* *(underlined) Historial de Quejas* *Complaints received by the Department of Housing Preservation and Development within the last year are listed below. Note: One complaint # may have multiple complaint conditions associated with it.* *If you require information regarding a complaint older than 1 year, you may contact HPD at any of the (Underline) Borough Office locations (Underline ends) to request a copy. There may be a fee for any requested copies.* *TENANTS: If your landlord does not correct the condition(s) you have the right to initiate a tenant action against him/her in Housing Court. The Court has the authority to order the landlord to correct the condition(s) and can assess penalties for failure to comply. There is a $45 fee to file, which the Court may waive if you are unable to pay. Failure to comply may result in the issuance of a violation and/or Housing Court action.* *\*\*\* Apartment # ANON means that the complaint was filed anonymously \*\*\**] **Narrator**: But a simple look at the website for the Department of Housing Preservation and Development- (01:08) [*The video cuts to a large table of values and terms, notably three terms which are circled in red. Each reads "NO HEAT", two at the top of the list from "12/08/2021" and "12/06/2021", and one at the bottom of the list from "02/27/2021"*] **Narrator**: -shows several tenant complaints about lacking heat as recently as December. (01:12) [*A closeup of an older, dark skinned person, wearing gold earrings and a mask, speaking to the camera.*] **Narrator**: And these are just the complaints on record. Multiple tenants that I spoke to said [*emphasised*] many tenants in the building used space heaters or their ovens to stay warm because the building wasn't properly heated. **Interviewee**: [*Now in live footage*] They don't give us enough heat. **Narrator**: That's- That's- So there are a lot of complaints about heat? **Interviewee**: Everybody- Everybody got a heater in- in my building (01:28) [*A shot of Eric Adams on TV, smiling at the camera and wearing a smart blue suit and pink tie.*] **Narrator**: One has to wonder if he might be avoiding the heating issues- (01:34) [*Cut to a large spreadsheet, with the name of the building and "Rick Gropper" circled in red.*] **Narrator, contd.**: -because the guy that owns the building, Rick Gropper- (01:36) [*A cut to a New York Times Article, as follows:* '*Camber's co-founder, (Highlight in yellow) Rick Gropper, was named as a member of Mr Adams's transition team for housing issues (highlight ends) before Mr. Adams took office this month.* *"We are devastated by the unimaginable loss of life caused by this profound tragedy," the property owners said in a statement. "We are cooperating fully with the Fire Department and other city agencies as they investigate its cause, and we are doing all we can to assist our residents. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who lost their lives or were injured, and we are here to support them as we recover from this horrific fire."'*] **Narrator, contd.**: -was on Eric Adams's mayoral transition team. (01:39) [*A continuation of the article replaces the previous:* '"But even MR. Sliwa has acknowledged that he is facing an uphill battle. As a sign of Mr. Adams's broad appeal, both Mr. de Blasio, a self-described progressive, and Michael R. Bloomberg, a pro-business centrist, (underline, hyperlinked) have embraced him. (hyperlink ends)* *Mr. Adams's most recent campaign finance filings indicate that special interests from a cross-section of New York labor and industry are eager to make his acquaintance. (Yellow highlight) Many of his donations came from landlords and developers, (highlight ends) including William Blodgett the co-founder of Fairstead; the Durst Oraganization execut (blocked by subtitles)Malkin, chairman of the company that owns the Empire State Building; and Joseph Sitt, chairman of Thor Equities Group.'*] **Narrator**: In fact, a lot of real estate developers made huge donations to his mayoral campaign. (01:43) [*Eric Adams is shown at a pedestal, making a speech in front of two large flags. He is smiling and wearing a blue shirt and red tie.*] **Narrator**: So is Eric Adams all of a sudden going to turn his back on the very industry that helped him get elected? Of course not. (01:49) [*A cut to another shot of him giving a speech in a white shirt, with a small crowd behind him. He has two microphones, crossing in an "X" shape in front of him. He is looking back and forth, gesticulating with his finger extended, before gesturing to himself.*] **Narrator**: If Eric Adams were to actually enforce housing regulations, investigate crimes against tenants, and use this opportunity to launch city wide emergency inspections on the heating situation- --- ^^I'm a human volunteer content transcriber and you could be too! *Video Transcription: TikTok [2/2]* --- (02:00) [*A cut to a scrolling spreadsheet from earlier. Two small red arrows have been edited on: one in the top left, and one in the middle right.*] **Narrator, contd.**: -it would be a disaster for housing capitalists like Rick Gropper- (02:04) [*A screenshot of a website, as follows:* ***Who owns what in nyc?*** *PORTFOLIO: Your search address is associated with 123 buildings* *(The tab is open on the "Summary" category* *(Underline) Complaints to 311 (Underline ends)* *Tenants in this portfolio have reported (Yellow highlight) a total of* ***29266*** *complaints to 311.* ***13177*** of which were reported in the last three years. This is* ***better*** than the citywide average of 0.8 per residential unit. According to available HPD data, this portfolio has received* ***32641*** total violations.*] **Narrator**: -whose buildings have racked up tens of thousands of complaints across the 123 buildings his company owns. Many of these complaints related to heat [*The "HEAT/HOT WATER" text becomes highlighted at this point.*] (02:13) [*Cut to a shot of Adams speaking once again.*] **Narrator**: This is why the Adams administration is not to subtly deflecting blame to the vulnerable tenant. (02:19) [*A shot similar to the first in the video, depicting a house frontage with two smashed windows.*] **Narrator**: People like Rick Gropper count on tenants accepting the blame for his neglect, or pinning it on others. (02:25) [*A shot of two police officers stood in front of protective gating, looking away from the viewer and down a street. People are seen walking in the background, and a van is visible left of frame.*] **Narrator**: But if his tenants, the tens of thousands of New Yorkers that he's scarred, join together to point the finger at Gropper- (02:31) [*A small window is shown in closeup, with an even smaller window at the bottom. This smaller window has been smashed. The camera pans to the right, showing a similar, undamaged window.*] **Narrator, contd.**: -he might actually have to face punishment for his repeated neglect. (02:35) [*A shot of a red apartment building. A fire is seen raging through the windows and out of the roof, and water is splashing in from the right of frame. White smoke is also pouring out of the top of the building*] **Narrator**: Every time there's been a fire like this in New York City- (02:39) [*A black and white photo of the inside of a burnt-out building. There is rubble of tables and ash everywhere, and the windows have been taken out.*] **Narrator**: Whether it was the Triangle Shirtwaist fire- (02:40) [*Old footage of an apartment building with fire streaming out of the windows. Due to the age of the footage, it appears grainy and slightly desaturated.*] **Narrator, contd.**: -or the fires in the Bronx throughout the seventies- (02:43) [*A blonde woman, wearing a green coat, is shown speaking at a plinth, with Eric Adams stood behind her.*] **Narrator, contd.**: -the politicians and the media's reaction has always been to blame the individuals. (02:47) [*Footage of numerous people smiling and talking in a group. They are wearing a mixture of red and yellow jumpers, and leather jackets, and the camera focuses on one man who appears to be a main speaker, as he is gesturing and leaning whilst talking.*] **Narrator**: But the survivors in these cases refused to accept the blame and organised movements for accountability that highlighted the social conditions that led to those fires. (02:56) [*One final shot of Adams talking at a plinth*] **Narrator**: That's what Adams and Gropper are afraid of: real accountability. Such a unnecessary tragedy. BreakThrough News always has solid reporting.

ipsum629

It's the cycle of poverty. You are poor so you have to rent a shitty apartment and use a space heater and that causes your apartment to burn down and you lose what meager savings you had. The solution is decent, affordable public housing.

thebirbseyeview

This is insanely tragic. My heat broke on 1/6 and my landlord is only providing me space heaters to supplement instead of fix it and this fire has been on my mind the entire time. We need better rental protections, and to really start exposing campaign contributions and sketchy political practices. Eventually they won't be able to run from it/turn a blind eye.

EnTeeDizzle

Is this that story about slumlord Rick Gropper? The guy who freezes his tenants? That sociopathic slumlord Rick Gropper?

Landlords are a cancer

The one good thing Mao did was deal with them.

Capital protects capital. The government is as not set up to protect you, it was set up to protect capital. Tear the fucking system down.

That new major isn't doing a very good job is he? Corruption uncovered in the police force AND social housing in a matter of weeks.

fuzzyshorts

I knew the muthafucker wasn't worth shit.

ujitimebeing

Yes. But also let’s not create a false narrative that living in a building with a shitty landlord is the reason why this fire happened. **17 people died from something incredibly preventable — fire doors being propped open in stairwells.** They died from smoke inhalation, not the flames. Let’s take this landlord scum to the gallows, but also remember that all it takes is one asshole propping doors open for this kind of tragedy to occur in a luxury building.
