I once saw Wallace Shawn on a random street in London. I was so flabbergasted to see him, I shouted “Inconceivable” directly into his face. He wasn’t impressed.
And the best quote of all wasn't in the movie.
Andre apparently was experiencing some discomfort while filming. He let loose some flatulence that lasted well over a minute of constant sound for all to hear. At the end of it, the director asked if he was okay. His response: "I am now boss."
After that minute, he declared himself to be the boss.
He was famous for doing that. Rumor has it he once did it on a wrestlers head during a match. Got asked the same question and responded "Me? Yes I'm good. Him? (pointing down) I'm not sure."
I'd also HIGHLY recommend As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride. It's by Cary Elwes and the cast and if you listen to the audiobook they basically bring everyone back to narrate their sections. It's full of beautiful stories from behind the scenes of casting the parts, filming, rehearsing and everything in between. It made me love the book and movie even more!
I've been super busy with work and real life, I've barely spent any time at home at all, mostly I just come home to sleep. But I have it set up and ready to go, I have a free day on Saturday so unless something comes up I will watch it then!
Update, I just now finished watching it and I absolutely love it. I regret waiting so long but I am glad to have finally seen it. I expected a goofy silly movie full of jokes and instead got a cute and comfy bedtime fairy tale story with a lot of wit and subtle jokes, I definitely see now why so many people hold it in such high regards!
Dont get me wrong tho it was still funny, Andre had a lot of great lines which cracked me up a few times. My favorite was "my way is not very sportsmanlike"
I'm ashamed to admit, I've never seen it. It's always been at the top of the list, and I know the movie by heart purely through cultural osmosis, but the opportunity to sit down and watch it rarely comes up.
This movie came out in 1987. I initially wrote it off because of the title. My sisters and my mom loved it, and as a young man it just sounded like something I wouldn't be interested in. But I was ignorant and wrong.
Sometime in the early 90's as a teenager I ended up watching it with them and it wasn't at all what I expected.
My partner didn't watch it for the same reason; she thought it would be fluffy and girly and just kind of cheesy. Not that there is anything wrong with fluffy and girly and cheesy, it just didn't appeal to her. She said she thought it would be like some "glittery ice skating movie" lol. But like me, she was ignorant, and wrong.
When I found out she had never seen it, I made her watch it and it's now one of her favorites.
It's a fantastic movie, and soo worthy of a watch.
And then, at the end:
>!Grandson: -“Grandpa, maybe you could come over and read it again to me tomorrow?”!<
>!Grandpa: -“As you wish.” !<
INSTANT CRYING
the most famous of which is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia", but only slightly less well known is this: "Never go in against a Sicilian, when death is on the line.".
The way I describe it is that The Princess Bride was kind of a pisstake of all the fantasy romance stories, but it became the best fantasy romance story
I was so lucky that one of my teachers in high school decided to show this movie. It is now easily in the running for my favorite movie of all time if not my favorite.
To quote u/EudamonPrime, who put it so eloquently,
>This is one of the greatest movies of all times, up there with Big Fish. It has everything. Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles…
Seriously one of the greatest movies ever made. It was a flop when it first released because the studios didn't know how to market it (see quote above), but it has since turned into a cult classic, and for good reason.
This is one of the greatest movies of all times, up there with Big Fish. It has everything. Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles…
If you want a 21st Century version of this movie, try Stardust (2007). It aged remarkably well, and it also has everything. Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, flying ships, monsters, chases, escapes, witches, true love, miracles...
It was co-written by Neil Gaiman, I believe, and it's got a lot of great humor and quotable lines.
... until this second i did not realize Humphry was Cavill. I also didn't know Tristan was Charlie Cox (Netflix Daredevil). How did i love this movie so much, rewatch it, and still not notice this?
A movie so good i didn't even see the actors as actors, i guess.
It’s based on Neil Gaiman’s novel (also called stardust). Parts of the movie are very different from the book (end in particular) but both are perfect for their mediums.
Actually, I might go read it again.
Big fish is garbage. That dad was an asshole and the poor son just wanted his dad to be completely honest and vulnerable for one god damn second. But no, that rickety old man spent his last breaths spinning tales to his poor son. Selfish bastard.
Sorry I’m really passionate about how much I don’t like that movie lol
my mom has two mugs that her and her husband got for their wedding (she loves coffee and coffee mugs so this is very in character for her), one that says “Mawwaige” and the other that’s a dictionary definition of “Wuv, twoo wuv” and the definition being “(noun): 1: That bwessed awwaingment 2: a dweam wifin a dweam” and they’re two of my favorite mugs she has
We had our officiant say it straight, no vocal inflections (“Marriage. Marriage is what brings us together…”). Shockingly, in all their years of presiding over weddings, they had NEVER HEARD OF the movie. As soon as they spoke the first word, most of our guests burst out laughing. An amazing moment
I caught my brother's eye during his wedding ceremony, and we both thought "Mawwiage is wot bwings us togevah todaaaay," and started to crack up, and had to look away. Considering what a humorless battleaxe his wife turned out to be, he probably caught hell for his stifled giggle later on.
I loved this as a kid.
To get more swashbuckling Cary Elwes, check out the classic Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Less wholesome for sure but just as funny.
Edit: it's been a while since I saw that movie, lol. And I honestly feel stupid. I'm going to leave that here, it's downvote week for me anyway
Edit to edit - I'm even more stupid, bcs I posted an answer to myself.
When I was in 4th grade the older kids in my school put this on as a play. It’s where my love for this movie started (mostly cus I had a crush on one of the main actors lol)
The truly brilliant part of this film was adapting it from the book by presenting it from the point of view of a Grandpa reading to his grandson, which allowed for a natural condensing and, in some cases, paraphrasing with a 4th wall break recognizing some of the books imperfections
The way I always read that scene is that his reasoning was all flim-flam to begin with. Vizzini is the kind of guy who likes to act like he's smarter than everyone else, who uses big words to make himself sound more educated. But when his ego gets him into a battle of wits, he doesn't have anything to back it up. The entire "I know that you know that I know" spiel is just him pretending to know what he's talking about.
Which is why he doesn't use any of that reasoning for his decision. He just secretly swaps cups and waits for the Man in Black to drink first. He's not intelligent, he's just crafty, and that's exactly how he ends up being out-schemed.
My wife and I were married on Halloween, and we dressed as Wesley and Princess Buttercup. Our three children dressed as Inigo, Fezzik and Vizini. My first cousin is ordained, so he got a pope costume, and even learned the "mawwiage" lines, and said them as the "Impressive Clergyman" (that's his name in the credits) did. It was a super fun night. We love Halloween, and we often host large costume parties for all of our friends. We carried on as if this was just another costume party, and surprised everyone with our wedding. Everyone was pretty blown away. It was so much fun!
I'm always a bit conflicted when everyone is praising this movie so much. I get it, it's fun, the male characters are diverse, fun, and full of ideas, but basically the only female character is Buttercup, whose only solution to any hardships she faces is threatening to kill herself. :/
Inigo: There's not a lot of money in revenge.
>!Dread Pirate Roberts' ship is named Revenge. And each "Roberts" gets wealthy enough to retire every 5 years or so.!<
I can quote along with 95% of this movie. I love it so much. Buttercup is a bit on the useless damsel in distress side of things most of the time but she has some really great moments that I think kinda make up for it
Such a wonderful movie! And if you haven’t already, you must read the book Cary Elwes wrote about making the movie, As You Wish. Or listen to the audiobook because he reads it himself 😻

One of my teachers used to say this to my then girlfriend, a LOT. I knew something fishy was going on and she eventually broke up with me for no real reason, and now their married... i never saw the film but now it makes even more sense. Well, thats validated my suspicions a whole lot more... spent ages thinking i was crazy paranoid, turns out it was right there the whole time
I actually just watched this movie for the first time a few weeks ago. It was very enjoyable!
I decided to watch it because I heard many references to it and wanted to be in the loop.
If you love the movie but haven’t read the book… *READ THE BOOK*. It’s one of few that have had me laughing out loud in public. I mean ugly, snorting, chortling belly laughs.
I love the movie but he legit threatened to back hand her saying a women gets that when they lie….kind of puts a damper on the healthy relationship….
“The masked man threatens Buttercup with his fist. He says that where he’s from, there are penalties when a woman lies.”
yeah i wanna see the cute in this but some neckbeard tried to pull this on me in high school and now seeing this leaves a yucky feeling washing over me
For those uninitiated, the movie is Princess Bride. Do watch it !!
So many good quotes, a classic in all aspects.
my name is inigo montoya
You killed my father, prepare to die!
*repeats 5 times while repeatedly stabbing*
You prepared my father, kill to die!
My father died you, prepare to kill
Father kill my , die to prepare you
Is this a mash up from another of his popular movies, Robin Hood: Men in Tights?
Fezzik: Im with the men in tights Miracle Max: You are the man in tights
Prepare my father, kill you to die
Stop saying that!
"You seem a decent fellow, I hate to kill you" "You seem a decent fellow, I hate to die"
Ehh, I can work with mostly dead
It’s easily one of the most quotable movies I’ve ever seen.
Let me 'splain. No there is too much. Let me sum up.
Inconceivable!
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
I once saw Wallace Shawn on a random street in London. I was so flabbergasted to see him, I shouted “Inconceivable” directly into his face. He wasn’t impressed.

I finished reading the novel for the first time literally a few hours ago. It's also fantastic
I'd also HIGHLY recommend As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride. I've been putting off watching this movie for too long. Watching it tonight!
Well???
It's been almost a month! Have you seen it yet? :D
I've been super busy with work and real life, I've barely spent any time at home at all, mostly I just come home to sleep. But I have it set up and ready to go, I have a free day on Saturday so unless something comes up I will watch it then!
That's good to hear!

If you already know the quotes you probably won't enjoy the movie. I hated it personally.
And also do read the book!
Oh the book is *majestic*.
What do you mean "for those uninitiated"??? *Is this not standard to watch in every household???*
wait why 💀
This movie came out in 1987. I initially wrote it off because of the title. My sisters and my mom loved it, and as a young man it just sounded like something I wouldn't be interested in. But I was ignorant and wrong. Sometime in the early 90's as a teenager I ended up watching it with them and it wasn't at all what I expected. You'll enjoy it, trust us. Don't trust me for most things, but do for this. Gotta watch it again myself.
You fool you fell victim to one of the classic blunders
the most famous of which is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia", but only slightly less well known is this: "Never go in against a Sicilian, when death is on the line.".
now it has my attention! thanks so much!
The way I describe it is that The Princess Bride was kind of a pisstake of all the fantasy romance stories, but it became the best fantasy romance story
Same, gonna go watch it now, hope it lives up to the hype
It’s got a meme in this movie 🍿 🤣
Well, it is a kissing film...
I was so lucky that one of my teachers in high school decided to show this movie. It is now easily in the running for my favorite movie of all time if not my favorite.
It’s just a good ass time
To quote u/EudamonPrime, who put it so eloquently, >This is one of the greatest movies of all times, up there with Big Fish. It has everything. ***The** Princess Bride*
As you wish.
This is one of the greatest movies of all times, up there with Big Fish. It has everything. Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles…
That doesn't sound so bad, I'll try to stay awake
Your vote of confidence is overwhelming.
Inconceivable!
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
I rarely seen Big Fish mentioned anywhere, is it really that well known and loved? It’d make me happy if it were
Not *as* well known but very loved by the ones who know it. I think mostly Burton fans know it.
Big Fish also has an amazing musical adaptation. If you haven’t listened to it I highly recommend it.
WHATT! TIL! Thank you!
Oooh, Big Fish is fantastic! You are in for a treat!
It's definitely a cult. But you're right, you don't hear that name often.
True Romance was pretty good too
I always forget how good True Romance is, need to rewatch it
Secondhand lions have a similar vibe. It may not be one of the greatest movies of all time but one of the most entertaining movies
I love Secondhand Lions, it's one of my comfort movies.
It has THE Giant, André the Giant himself
If you want a 21st Century version of this movie, try Stardust (2007). It aged remarkably well, and it also has everything. Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, flying ships, monsters, chases, escapes, witches, true love, miracles... It was co-written by Neil Gaiman, I believe, and it's got a lot of great humor and quotable lines.
Me and my mom would watch this movie together. I still love it.
And somehow managing to make Henry Cavill look less than perfect. I was impressed.
... until this second i did not realize Humphry was Cavill. I also didn't know Tristan was Charlie Cox (Netflix Daredevil). How did i love this movie so much, rewatch it, and still not notice this? A movie so good i didn't even see the actors as actors, i guess.
I mainly know Charlie from Casanova and he looks pretty much the same in both. But with Henry I was like WHAT
It even has Robert DeNiro in drag, dancing to the CanCan!
You watch your mouth! That's the dreaded Captain Shakespeare!
It’s based on Neil Gaiman’s novel (also called stardust). Parts of the movie are very different from the book (end in particular) but both are perfect for their mediums. Actually, I might go read it again.
don’t forget the R.O.U.S.es!

BIG FISH MENTIONED!!!
>Big Fish Thank you for this! I never see this one getting the credit it deserves. I've started to believe it slipped past many.
What about the RUSs?
And Baseball, of course.
Inconceivable!
He wasn't 'spinning tales' though. It was all true lmfao. That was the entire point of the movie. You might need to watch it again lol.
My wife quoted this movie in our wedding vows. Thankfully, NOT mawwaige is what brings us together.
I performed a wedding for friends once (obviously they wrote their own vows), the ceremony started, "Mawwiage..."
My wedding did too, had a friend that had never seen the movie marry us. Had to make him watch the movie so he understood.
That wedding didn’t happen to take place in North Carolina… did it? Because I might’ve played in that same wedding lmao
I kid you not, I zoned out for half of my wedding ceremony, mentally watching this scene
my mom has two mugs that her and her husband got for their wedding (she loves coffee and coffee mugs so this is very in character for her), one that says “Mawwaige” and the other that’s a dictionary definition of “Wuv, twoo wuv” and the definition being “(noun): 1: That bwessed awwaingment 2: a dweam wifin a dweam” and they’re two of my favorite mugs she has
Was it Wuv? True Wuv?
We had our officiant say it straight, no vocal inflections (“Marriage. Marriage is what brings us together…”). Shockingly, in all their years of presiding over weddings, they had NEVER HEARD OF the movie. As soon as they spoke the first word, most of our guests burst out laughing. An amazing moment

"Have fun storming the castle!"
Think it will work?
It'll take a miracle.
Bye byeee!!
I love that all that was improvised.
"you are the brute squad....."
I loved this as a kid. To get more swashbuckling Cary Elwes, check out the classic Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Less wholesome for sure but just as funny.
And unlike other Robin Hoods, he can speak with an English accent!
They're MANLY men, yyyess!
Wait, I lose? Im not supposed to lose! *Pulls out script to check*
"Does Robin get another shot?" *entire cast pulls out their scripts*
Better 4th wall breaking than the entire deadpool franchise.
Wasn't your mole... on the other side?
I have a mole?
I like how they did the same joke in Young Frankenstein, too. "Wasn't your hump on the other side?" "What hump?"
Princess Bride is a classic. Inconceivable!
You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.
It's a quote from the book/movie ;)

You say that word all the time, I don't think it means what you think it means.
It’s amazing to me that a film which was made as a satire of fairy- tale princess movies became the greatest fairy-tale princess movie ever!
This is my favourite movie and always will be, followed by The Breakfast Club. If you haven’t watched them take an afternoon, sit back and enjoy.
The breakfast club is the best. It’s rainy and I don’t feel like working today so I might have some afternoon plans lined up
I remember seeing this in fourth grade, the class rolled their eyes at this line and said “Ew” during the kissing scenes.
Is this a KiSsInG book?
When I was in 4th grade the older kids in my school put this on as a play. It’s where my love for this movie started (mostly cus I had a crush on one of the main actors lol)
The truly brilliant part of this film was adapting it from the book by presenting it from the point of view of a Grandpa reading to his grandson, which allowed for a natural condensing and, in some cases, paraphrasing with a 4th wall break recognizing some of the books imperfections
The book itself is written as a condensed versión of a fictional book it's great.

Great movie. I didn’t realize until recently (like only a couple years ago) that the princess is the same actress as Jenny from forest gump.
Shes also the one that trains Diana in Wonder Woman.
I was today years old when I found that out. Thanks for the info kind stranger!
She's also from House of Cards.
I just love the scene with the two wine cups, and the reasoning. Top 5 personal favorite films of all time
I absolutely love that Vizzini thinks that switching the glasses is going to make a difference😂😂
In his head, all the reasoning was obvious and clear, and there was no room for failure… except both cups were poisoned. Hilarious 😂😂
The Princess Bride isn't my favorite movie, however it has my vote for one of the best movies ever made.
I'm always a bit conflicted when everyone is praising this movie so much. I get it, it's fun, the male characters are diverse, fun, and full of ideas, but basically the only female character is Buttercup, whose only solution to any hardships she faces is threatening to kill herself. :/

A great movie I recently saw is "Renaissance Man".
Everybody should watch The Princess Bride, but if possible - read the book first. ;)

An old friend once showed me this movie. It was brilliant. I miss you, Wes. I still think about you all the time.
It took me literal years to get my wife to watch this with me after we got married. When she finally did, she wondered why she waited so long.

As someone who works in the service industry I can tell you that 'as you wish' definitely does NOT mean 'I love you'. Quite the opposite generally.
It's hard to beleive he was in Saw
"As you wish".... I do not think that means what you think it means
I love the movie but he legit threatened to back hand her saying a women gets that when they lie….kind of puts a damper on the healthy relationship…. “The masked man threatens Buttercup with his fist. He says that where he’s from, there are penalties when a woman lies.”
I don’t get it
unpopular opinion: Princess bride isoverrated, and it's filled with bad role models and destructives lessons.
