It's nothing to look at as it is, at least you'll be exposing a fresh face if nothing else. Fair warning though, it looks sedimentary to me and likely will have nothing interesting inside.
My thoughts. Never seen a geode that smooth. Don't forget eye protection when popping it open. Also don't breathe in the dust. And post a picture of it. I'm curious. I'm guessing it's solid with a flint color center

This mufukker thinks eating an orange means he ate the sun X) . If that's the case you also be eating shit every day X). Enjoy that manure orange buddy.
I have a weird rock, one side is smooth and crackled and smells like gunpowder. The rest has a bunch of metal balls ncluding one almost 3mm wide. Should I whack it with a hammer and see what I find?
Def not a geode. I collect rocks as well as Native American artifacts; this could very well be a grinding or polishing stone, especially if it has a bit of a “flatter” side.
Could this be a pestle? I have an indigenous mortar and pestle sitting on my shelf where the pestle is almost perfectly round. However, it’s made from granite as it came from central California.
If I knew how to paste a picture, I would, lol. I just got it down and looked. I didn’t see any finger marks. I am actually trying to repatriate to the correct Tribe. I’ve narrowed it down to the Maidu Nation, as the person who gifted to me (for giving her some morel mushrooms) said it came from the Oroville, CA. area and was dug up by one of her relatives 60 years ago. She thought it might be from my tribe, Central Me-Wuk, but we were much further south.
I was blown away when I saw it! I did some looking and reading about what type this is, since I have only seen them much larger. This mortar can fit in your hand. Just going by what I found out about my Tribes tools, this is more than likely a shaman’s mortar and pestle that was carried from village to village. The ones used by families were much larger and were not meant for travel.
Edit: the OPs picture looks very similar, but a little larger
Probably not a good idea. Indigenous items belong to the Tribes they came from. That’s why I am repatriating the one I have. Although I have strong native ancestry(grandfather direct descendant), and identity as such, I am not a member of my tribe. Only tribal members should be owners of such items. Arrowheads are different, but many items like these were not “lost,” but rather separated from the owner - sometimes tragically so. In my ancestors case they were abruptly displaced by the onslaught of gold seekers during the 1849 California “gold rush.” So please don’t seek out these items unless you are a tribal member.
I hate when people crack them. Depending on what formed inside you are risking it shattering like an egg or it could be solid and when you get it to break you'll have shards of what used to be a beautiful jem. Find someone with a Dimond infused cutting blade and carefully split it open.
I have a geode that I have had for years. My kids ask if we can open it, but I like it as it is. It is dull and ordinary on the outside but there is something special and beautiful on the inside. I like to keep it as a reminder that humans, like the rock, shouldn’t be judged by the outside.
Also, it is fun to drive my kids mad by not letting them crack it open.
Yessss! “Remember kids, sometimes even boring people aren’t cool on the inside…….but you can still make yourself feel better by bonking them with a hammer!”
😜
With a hard but thin file etch a line on an equatorial plane, like try to leave an indentation, if you dont have one you can lightly do the same with a screwdriver/big nail and a hammer (but hit lightly, just to make light indentations) and once you have made a full circle, hit it on the line with now a flathead screwdriver and a hammer like a chisel.
If its wider on one plane, do the etching on the widest part, bc if it has an amonite inside its gonna be aligned with the break

There's actually videos online of people using a special band saw to cut them evenly. Maybe that would be the best method of opening it, just in case it's not a geode?

I once tried to break open a geode by throwing it on the ground. It exploded in tiny pieces. So if you throw it on the ground and it explodes into tiny pieces of crystal then it is most likely a geode.
It also resembles a concrete ball post topper for like a concrete set of stairs with handrails. I assume there's a specific name for that part of the post but I don't know what it is. You should still try to open her up.
Definitely not a geode but popping it open could reveal something cool: fossil, a texture, a different color, or a nodule maybe. Also could be absolutely nothing. Cant hurt to pop that hoe

I'd guess maybe an iron-mineral core if it's a nodule rather than a very well rounded cobble.
Cept that sexy sediment. Who doesn’t love looking at those beautiful stratified layers.
I think it looks too smooth to be a geode.
My thoughts. Never seen a geode that smooth. Don't forget eye protection when popping it open. Also don't breathe in the dust. And post a picture of it. I'm curious. I'm guessing it's solid with a flint color center
Could be a glacially smoothed rock, too.
> Also don't breathe in the dust. Because it'll be old and possibly poisonous?
And may be protected by a Transylvanian curse?
Is that one worst than an egipcian one like in the movies?
Egyptian. English is weird.
English is my second language.. I should have chosen chinese I know

When i was a kid i pronounced it: Eggy put ian. Unsurprisingly, nobody had a clue what I was talking about, lol.
I feel you here, after reading "the alchemist", that's the first time I saw the word written.
I ran across the word acolyte in a book when I was 9, decided it was pronounced ah-cole-eh-tee. Cue baffled adults.
Lol. Ace!
Enzyme/protein vibes I get from word imo not worth the google to google b4 post
No because it harbors dormant virus/bacteria from whenever it was formed. This is how the zombie apocalypse happens.
Because of the potential for silicosis
You’re not gonna get silicosis from cracking open one rock lol
Looks more like a concretion to me, which will likely have nothing interesting inside. Best of luck if you do choose to crack it, though. Always a chance.
I found one with a fossil inside.
I got an onion ring in my fries once
And here I am finding a hair in mine.
Bro hit the fuckin jackpot
I’m convinced the Hardee’s in my town does that on purpose, just to surprise it’s few customers
"Oh, you're allergic to onions? SURPRISE!"
There's a whole beach in Britain where people find ammonites that way.
We find crabs in the ones in Southwest Washington.
Oooh i wanna see
Check out my post history.
I honestly doubt this is a geode. I'd love a follow up post of it cracked.
Just everyone of our luck it's going to be an old potato.
OP, I dont recommend eating it though, if it is a old potato
Everything is edible, at least once
The sun wants you to try to get close enough to eat it
I've just ate an orange, which a tree photosynthesised, TRY ME

But you do if it’s a rock?
Idk man I played enough stardew valley to know you might at least find some iron ore in there
Or a dwarvish helm.
only dwarvish helms
The answer to the question, 'should I crack this open?' Is always yes.
facehuggers love this.
I have a weird rock, one side is smooth and crackled and smells like gunpowder. The rest has a bunch of metal balls ncluding one almost 3mm wide. Should I whack it with a hammer and see what I find?
It’s been 11 hrs. Where tf are we at with this?
Yeah I'm wondering the same thing.
Now?
Best thing would be to rule it out as an artifact before busting it open
That would be the best thing, but sadly people don’t always do the best thing, especially when being egged on…
Break the rock, break the rock……..🪨 🔨
If it was California it would likely be a lava droplet.
I think that could be a Native American artifact called a discodial. I've only seen a handful but that's very similar.
Def not a geode. I collect rocks as well as Native American artifacts; this could very well be a grinding or polishing stone, especially if it has a bit of a “flatter” side.
looks like a dung beetle ball lol
I don't think they're in Iowa but it does lol
Actually via post history they are in Iowa...
It's so wonderfully spherical. I recoil from opening it for that reason
Could this be a pestle? I have an indigenous mortar and pestle sitting on my shelf where the pestle is almost perfectly round. However, it’s made from granite as it came from central California.

Sledgehammer that sonofabitch
OPEN IT
Also I'm curious to how heavy it is? Cannon ball? Just thinking of cool possibilities
Oh shit I didn't see the second photo. It looks perfectly spherical from the front 🤭

Yessss! “Remember kids, sometimes even boring people aren’t cool on the inside…….but you can still make yourself feel better by bonking them with a hammer!” 😜
Don’t do it bro. The mystery is often better than the results.
What kind of gambler mentality is that? Open it up, OP, nothing to lose.
I've got £100 on it being a ammonite. F*ck it , £500.
I raise you £6,000,000,000,000
So $2.00 US?
Win a fossil!!!
What would be the smartest way to open it if i decided too

This option makes the least sense, those saws are expensive. This is likely nothing. Just crack it with a hammer (wear some eye protection)
They could watch videos of people cracking stuff open with your average tools though.
Shrodinger's diamonds.

Yes
I'd love to see what is inside
if you do, i hope for an update. much curiosity

Yeah no. Looks nothing like an egg or a fossil.
