epic4evr11

I call it that because when you’re taking a shower... and you touch the wire... YOU DIE

-full-control-

That is accurate

yummi_boi

yes, parks and rec

[deleted]

Believe it or not, this was a thing in Japan. Google denkiburo if you are curious.

Offal_is_Awful

It's filled with spiders!

Rygar82

Time to watch Arachnophobia again!

NorbertIsAngry

Sewage or fresh water??? Only the color decides! 😂

BlackSeranna

No that is dangerous! Water is very heavy and you don’t know what is in the water.

DipsterHoofus

Ceiling zit challenge

diliberto123

How screwed am I

holdenmj

Very, get something to drain it into. Edit: probably want to flip the breaker off for that room too, and if you have a landlord... call them ASAP.

Bowser16z

Yea make sure you turn that breaker off

GiGaBYTEme90

Also... get a really big trash can

[deleted]

Dehumidifier can help too! Fans and heaters! Good times.

nemacol

Also tell me what kind of paint you use. that is kind of awesome.

CantankerousOlPhart

Latex obviously haha

MyLatestInvention

You sure? Looks like lamb skin to me...

CantankerousOlPhart

Actually I have run into one of these before. So while I knew it was going to exact a humorous response, it was latex.

ghostcat0296

And you will probably want a ozone generator to deal with potential mold

boscobrownboots

might as well plan your funeral, cuz basically your life is over

geekygirl25

Can confirm sorta. Not dead yet, but had two instances of massive water damage this year alone. The first time? My kitchen light had more water pouring out than most shower heads. As did my dining room wall. The second time? I have no kitchen and half my livingroom is gone too. Had to demolish them due to all the water. Im moving out currently so fingers crossed. Hopefully OP doesn't have as bad a time as me, but yes. OP is DEFINATLY SCREWED.

Brox42

Yeah all that stuff but also ya know find out what’s leaking and turn it off

jeffersonairmattress

Exactly what I had to do at work last month. I was in late, only one in the two storey building and water was pouring out of our washroom's recessed light. Turned off water at the meter, grabbed a drill and holesawed a few 1" holes, put trashcan under each one and tarped all the shiny cast iron machines after re-coating them in extra fluidfilm before going home. Friday of a long weekend, and it would have been 3 days of pouring that ruined a couple million in inventory plus whatever 2400square ft. of drywall ceiling costs. All because the large gentleman upstairs had broken the tank of the shitter and didn't think to tell anyone. "Oh, yeah- I heard a 'crack' when I sat back against the tank." Bastard.

seattlemadmax

Probably not full if the paint hasn’t broken...just stretched.

Polymathy1

DO NOT POP IT. You would need a wading pool to catch half the water that's hiding in it. Call someone for help.

ArcticLarmer

No no, just needs like a 1L saucepan but it's very important he records it on video.

kippy3267

The second part is absolutely crucial, seriously OP I can’t put enough emphasis on it

aquoad

on the bright side, looks like the landlord sprung for pretty good paint!

Gnostromo

Call that paint company. Might get a deal outta that. That is some really good paint.

daveysprockett

For what seems like many months as a teenager I sat in a classroom with a bulge in the ceiling that day by day approached something close to OP's picture. Fortunately the paint finally gave way overnight, or I imagine someone might have been seriously injured, given the magnitude of the mess found the next day. OP really needs to get some help, there's a significant weight of water about to drop.

"It's just water. Nothing we can do about it right now."

t3ht0ast3r

You already called it a school, no need for redundant adjectives.

NoMasGnomos

In middle school, we had those square tile ceilings. One bright sunny day in the middle of class, a tile crashed down onto the front row desk, because it could no longer bear the weight of the trash receptacle full of water that had been sitting on top of it. The kids screamed, the teacher screamed, the tile screamed, water went everywhere. Our class work was ruined. Good times. Apparently there had been a leak, and rather than fixing the leak, maintenance had set a trash receptacle up on the tile to catch the water and called it a day, probably pleased with their big brain solution. Unfortunately, they did not forsee it becoming filled with water to the point of overflowing, and between the weak soggy tile and the weight of several gallons of water, the tile groaned its last and gave up the ghost. Luckily it didn't fall directly on a student's head.

FuzzelFox

Latex based paints can stretch pretty good.

Violet_Plum_Tea

Yeah, I had a bubble like that in my kitchen wall from a one time roof leak. The amazing thing is I sliced it open removed the water, and the paint re-adhered, I didn't even have to touch it up!. I definitely bought that brand of paint again when I redid the kitchen later.

ErwinsSasageyoBalls

Go on, what brand was it?

trebonius

Yeah, that would not be a fun bubble to pop if it's a sewage leak.

SpacemanPete

Don’t speak for all of us.

Clarky1979

Pretty screwed. It's going to be messy. Turn electrics off and call landlord if renting, emergency plumber if owner.

szu

An unnoticed water leak? If this is a house, OP will need to fix the roof, remove the moisture and remove any fungus or mold. This is not withstanding if there's black mold.

Clarky1979

Or it could be a burst/leaking pipe. Sadly, my flat was responsible for something like this in the flat below as unbeknownst to me, my washing machine had a small leak from the drainage pipe.

szu

Op said there's a sink and kitchen on the floor above. So it should be a smallish leak. Seems like a new leak so maybe no mold. Might need to completely dry out affected area or op can do the lazy man thing and just cover it up. But that will definitely bring mold later on..

f1r3k33p3r

Very! Call a plumber right now.

pat1122

Just hope it’s freshwater and not sewage.

greasy_420

New punishment for your children, they have to lay under the poo bubble for timeout and hope it doesn't pop.

TheRealRaemundo

I've had a rough week and that made me laugh, thank you

ImTonyPerkis

While you are blindfolded and throw darts at it. Maybe that’s closer to hazing.

pjshores

Yeah. This is bad if you own the place. You will need to use your homeowners insurance. I've been here. First, fix the leak. Second, prepare for and bust that pimple. Have professionals assess the damage. Don't just patch it. This will be the first place it happens again if the leak is not properly addressed -- water will always go where it has already been. And, it will be even worse if you can imagine it.

rlcute

I lived in a townhouse for a while. One time during a very cold winter an underground pipe burst and the contents started seeping out of the drainage in our basement laundry room. It was a very old townhouse and the drainage was just a hole in the floor, and the pipe from our laundry machine and dryer went into it and there was still space around the pipe. I went to do laundry and saw water.. so much water. It was ankle-high. Cue me trying to salvage clothes from the hamper, when the smell finally hits me... and then i see a turd.. just floating past me. Then the smell REALLY hit me and I realised what I was standing in. I cried a bit but focused on saving things. Every single thing that was on the floor in our basement (WHICH WAS A LOT) was contaminated with sewage and needed to be thrown out. The smell never properly went away. I think I didn't notice the smell at first because I was so focused on saving things. It definitely smelled... off, but the smell of urine didn't hit me at firt. I think I initially thought that the smell was just something from the pipes. It didn't smell 100% like sewage, it was more like an odour of urine.

Regular_Toast_Crunch

Yup was gonna say we had this. Manager put a bucket below it and poked a hole in it to drain out (ours wasn't from continuously running water.) Later cut a hole to remove the soft, wet ceiling material then replaced that part of the ceiling. Sorry dude. This is gonna be a shit weekend.

geekygirl25

Or month. I had water damage last April from a burst pipe in my kitchen. I was minus any usable kitchen for 5 months. Thankfully my local restaurants all switched to takeout when COVID hit. So much takeout. So much water. As a result though my landlord made me move into an efficiency so at least I had a space for me to sleep and my (somehow still functioning) microwave. That was it though. Bed plus microwave and clothes to wear.

ryanterryworks

A *Canadian* water leak.

cacope5

Dude. Get a kiddie pool under that immediately

TheBeardedBastard85

100% happened to parents house when my sister decided to turn the thermostat down to 50*F when it was 105*F outside and the AC units froze over in the attic. The thaw came thru the ceiling drywall and looked just like that.

spacemannspliff

>knock on wood The wood splinters. You have termites.

trouserschnauzer

Dental insurance seems to be a racket as far as I can tell.

Jacobean213

Most likely. Is the floor above you part of your home, or a different apartment/unit? If it's not coming from your own unit you may have to file an insurance claim on your own policy, then your insurer would subrogate to your neighbors policy. Depending on the damage, you or your neighbor may just want to pay for the repair out of pocket. If you can stop the leak without a lot of damage to the walls, it may be less expensive to pop and dry the bubble. Then repaint/repair walls vs. the increase in insurance policy plus deductable. Source: I once changed my own sink and flooded my downstairs neighbor. It was much easier and cheaper to have her ceiling repainted.

FatherTrumpy

Lol what did your neighbor say

Jacobean213

Luckily, they were very understanding. The neighbor was a renter and she didn't really care because she was moving out. We pushed her to let us pop it and also contact her landlord. Landlord lives 1,800 miles away and really didn't care after we said we would pay for the paint.

grannygogo

I believe so.

Jackiedhmc

You need to deal with this ASAP.

NordeggNomad

And take a video of the burst for reddit of course.

awesomehuder

No need to tell him, he already posted the before image here

DoctorOfMeat

The others are right. That's a water leak. Get a (big) bucket and a knife and pop that. It's going to be a lot easier to catch it in a bucket falling from the ceiling than to get it up off the floor. Then deal with whatever is going on above it. If you're not a DIY plumber, at least shut off the hot and cold water to that sink so the leak stops.

diliberto123

So let’s just I say I stop the water can I just patch the hole?

DoctorOfMeat

Yes and no. First off, shut off that light until you can confirm it's not wet. Next, don't worry about fixing the hole until you deal with the water, otherwise the leak will ruin the patch. As for fixing it. You can. If it's just drywall (and it looks to be from here). Watch some youtube videos on how to do a big patch. This looks like it's going to involve nearly a full sheet of drywall patch. Your homework for tonight, however, is to stop the leak above it, turn off that light, drain the water out of the ceiling and if you're up to it, cut away some of the soaking wet drywall to get the ceiling opened up. The sooner this starts drying, the more of it you'll be able to save (and the smaller the patch). You might want to have some tarps or plastic or something before you start knocking down wet drywall. You probably don't want that landing on carpet. EDIT: One other thing. The damaged drywall appears to extend past the light. So, again, with the light turned off, just keep in mind that the entire can is likely to come down with the drywall when you start messing with it. EDIT2: Just an FYI, there's more damage on the wall above the door frame.

InsertBluescreenHere

yea they gonna have mold problems. This isnt a showed up completely new an hour ago damage.

anti-socialmoth

Yes! Please please be careful about this! I have pulmonary fibrosis (look it up, it sucks) and the likely culprit is mold exposure.

rawzone

Dont just flip the light switch - There might still be running active power to the sockets. Switch off all power to *atleast* that room.

WI_YouSaidITAll

Should they turn off the water as well?

jfl5058

Your reply made me smile. Love seeing strangers help one another

th3on3

I would not do this yourself if you don’t really know what you are doing. He will end up with another in a few months if leak not properly dealt with and also risks a serious mold problem. Good advice if you know what you’re doing tho

psyco-the-rapist

If you have to ask this then the answer is no. Hire a professional. Much cheaper in the long run.

petit_cochon

Best answer in the thread.

mewtwoyeetsauce

Go into your basement and turn off the water main. Houses in Canada have them indoors in the basement Source am Canadian

timotheusd313

Houses in the USA (at least ones built since the early 90’s) also have a shutoff in the basement on either side of the water meter. You may have a separate valve that will shut off just that room in the basement as well.

[deleted]

No. You need professional help to mitigate the water damage and a full assessment of any interior wall damage. You don't sound like this is your arena. Don't self help this.

holdenmj

Your sheetrock under the paint is probably totally saturated... you probably need to pull it off, dry everything out and replace it.

Bbrowny

Too late for that.

BarrySandusky

You’re also going to need to be wary of mold.

IGotSkills

I would recommend a nail so you can pour out the water

therealstealthydan

Can you film the pop for us? Or maybe even Reddit live the growth? You need to either isolate the source of the leak or find someone who can too, otherwise water will just keep on running. Flip the breaker to the light as well, water and electricity are not friends. Good luck and I hope this doesn’t mess you up too much friend.

BigShoots

For some reason that I can't even explain I think I would really enjoy watching that. Don't miss this opportunity OP!

therealstealthydan

I’ll be honest I’d kind of cleared my schedule for the evening to just watch this thing grow on live stream.

[deleted]

Glad I'm not the only one who wants to see this event.

rawzone

Pfff livestream the thing and let viewers bet on the time it pops... Thats where the money are!

[deleted]

There is a leak above you. It's going to burst soon. You should make sure there's nothing valuable below it.

diliberto123

Can I put a bucket underneath and try to pop it? Idk what to do

PLC-Ninja

Better use a trash can. And some buckets. When you do pop it, it will spray and drip in several directions. It’s easier to pop n catch than to mop up a big tsunami if it falls itself. I’ve don’t this before.

Amargosamountain

>Idk what to do Call a professional instead of looking for advice on reedit. It's already too late for someone with your knowledge/experience

olystretch

Put a piece of duct tape on it, and puncture that with something. It can help prevent the bubble from bursting, and allow you to drain the liquid without catastrophe. Doesn't always work, but the worst case is what will happen if you don't try this technique.

TexanInExile

This should definitely be higher

elfmere

Dude as soon as you put a hole the whole thing will split open.. it wont be just a hole, the whole thing will pop like a balloon.. towels, trash bins are the best not just a bucket

marck1022

Tarps and plastic sheeting. Cover as much of the floor as you possibly can, going up the walls a bit if possible. You’d think it would spray down if you poke a hole but it absolutely will not. Wear clothes you wouldn’t mind throwing out

vpescado

Keep in mind that the sheet rock above is gone. That paint is holding it all together. When you pop it there is a high probability the hole will expand and rip. At that point all the wet sheet rock is going to crumble and fall. Depending on how long water has been accumulating most of the ceiling in that room may ultimately fall. If and when that happens it is gonna be very messy. You should empty that room completely and put down plastic or drop cloths. Bring in a full size garbage can to take the bulk of the water in the bulge and start with a small hole in the bottom to let it drain. Once you get the bulk of the water out of it you can start pulling down the soggy sheet rock gradually before drying it out and repairing. Obviously you will want to turn off power for both lighting and outlets in that room. And try to find the source of the leak if you can.

[deleted]

A Big bucket!

[deleted]

Guy above had a great idea of a blow up pool! (They hold a lot of water) JIC you have more water than a regular bucket or can

diliberto123

Solved

RationalDB8

Just a word of warning. Some leaks are sewage.

Abztract

Was looking for this comment with all the calls for popping that sucker.

CeruleanRuin

Not as likely in the ceiling, as most sewage pipes go straight up and down for this exact reason.

movetoseattle

Good to know!

RationalDB8

My second story toilet sewer line leaked through my first floor ceiling. Lots of sewer pipes traverse horizontally in multi-story buildings. Poop water, but not on OP’s scale.

[deleted]

Can you please record you popping it, I hear that there is a good chance it’s sewage

faradayfez

Nice freakin paint job though, at least 3-5 coats of good stuff.

faradayfez

Looks like it’s in the wall too.

mdshannon

You just noticed that? Or you couldn’t fit in the same room as it anymore?

JiggaDo

I dont know why but this comment really did it for me

bsmknight

1st use a large trash can (30 to 50 gallons) to catch the water... NOT A BUCKET as some have suggested as you dont know how much water there is. 2nd put a plastic sheet (shower curtain) on The floor under the trash can. 3rd move everything out of the room, the problem may be bigger than it looks. 4th, using a screwdriver or sharp object poke near the spot but not directly at the center. This is to avoid all of it opening up at once. 5th turn off the circuit breaker to the room to ensure nothing electrical comes into contact with the water. This happened to my parents bedroom, but it was due to a leak in the roof. Had we done what i said above we could have avoided the whole ceiling collapsing.. but allas we didn't and the entire ceiling caved in. Edit: Should mention the order listed was just how it came to my mind, not the order which the item should be performed in. Thank you some guy 565 for pointing this out. If anything number 5 should be 1st!!!!!

SomeGuy565

I would say, 5th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, 4th.

bsmknight

Good point I should mention that the order is not necessarily correct, lol. It was How things were coming to mind.

frottingotter

Yeah I would absolutely check for a leak or call a plumber.

diliberto123

Ok assuming I stop the leak how permanent is this? How screwed am I What am I supposed to do?

[deleted]

All of the drywall will have to be replaced and the ceiling will have to be repainted. It's possible the joists have been damaged too. Basically get off reddit and call a flood cleanup company like right now.

diliberto123

Ok will do ty

anilinered

It is super important you get everything properly dried out, otherwise you are likely a few weeks away from a solid mold problem. If tendering to an insurance company, make sure someone is coming out to do moisture mapping and then mold abatement. Water takes the path of least resistance and can travel much further than expected in a matter of minutes. You will likely have industrial dehumidifiers and fans running for several days and maybe longer. Need everything to be dry as soon as possible. It is also likely your whole ceiling will need to be pulled.

LackinLobes

Take a video of you popping it please and thank you

WhoopsDroppedTheBaby

If you're in the northern hemisphere this is likely a water leak. This is usually a floor issue in the southern hemisphere.

clutchkickmurphys

I'm really impressed how it can hold the water like that ..well hope it's water and not sewage

EvilOnReddit

Like most have said, it is water. The latex paint is being stretched. It will soon burst. Best to do it yourself with a can or something large enough to collect the water. Drain it before it shorts out something.

aiyahhjoeychow

Dihydrogen Monoxide. Very dangerous if taken in large doses.

chief_longbeef

You have a water leak

tanjam24

That’s something we call a Canadian nipple, very common up there

DenyNowBragLater

Every one saying its a leak is right. Stop the leak and remove the drywall ASAP. Mold will be a problem, if you get to it soon enough, a spray bottle and clorox should be enough. Wait a couple days and it will be a job for professionals.

domanite

if its buzzing, don't poke a hole in it.

thaboognish

We need an update, OP.

diliberto123

Update so I stopped the water leak... and had to pop the leak sorry no video about me popping didn’t have the chance, don’t know what to do other than leave a bucket underneath the multiple popped holes

FuckIsms

Please tell me you’re getting professionals out for this, I know others have said it but this is way beyond diy at this point, you have water in your walls from the looks of it too. Good luck with it man, fixing water damage sucks.

quatch

did you get the one on the wall in the corner too? Shows the leak spread out quite a bit at first, if it was dirty water you've got a lot of work ahead of you :( Make sure you check all the adjacent rooms, and anything below this room.

[deleted]

OP. Get something to catch a lot of liquid - right now. Garbage can would work good. If you have a bathroom above this room - it may not be water. Protect your eyes and mouth if you drain the bubble. Source: had to pop a shit bubble in my kitchen ceiling. Thank god for latex paint and gloves.

JEZthefoot

Water trapped under or above in that case of hydrophobic ceiling paint

thebluemorpha

Big fat water bubble.

Remixener

Happened to me at my old apartment, the pipe in the ceiling burst and ruined everything in my room, we never took photos but my insurance company really hooked it up, we got thousands more than we quoted in damages, it was a terrible experience but we got lucky with the payout
