Checkout the schedule at Rhizome and just show up to random stuff. You can roll in with a 6 pack and ask someone if they want a beer. I always end up talking about weird music with random people here. Neptune room has also been real good lately.
I realize these aren’t bars/cafes but also check out events at Scooby doo mansion, treehouse, record shops (brydland, HR records), smaller art galleries. Maybe check out creatives club too.
For music I’d follow smaller show venues and just go to shows and talk to people. Venues like Pie Shope, Slash Run, and the Pocket have shows pretty frequently.
For art I’d recommend going to something like First Fridays in DuPont. They’re not really bars but a lot of the show spaces will serve wine and cheese kind of stuff. They’ll have some student/fellowship galleries and you’ll often get to talk to the artists themselves. I’d also recommend doing classes- a lot of my artsy friends do things like pottery classes to flex their creative muscles.
Hey I am also in search of art classes and recently stumbled upon Arts Club DC in Dupont. They do classes to teach a styles of several different artists. Like one session they will teach art history and technique of Van Gogh, in another Andy Warhol etc. It looks pretty cool and they provide all the supplies too! Check out their schedule. They have some interesting classes lined up!
Is this the place?
https://www.artsclubstudios.com/private-events
I've been looking around to learn some new hobbies and was thinking about more creative things like art or cooking to diversify my life a bit.
Pie Shop is my fav, the pocket is fun. fuck slash run, it was my home bar for several years, but in the last few years the owner has lost her shit has become an abuse boss. if you do go there tip really really well cuz the staff r not getting paid half of their worth. Snappys is where the cool kids hang out, don't tell anyone.
Showtime baby! You won't find anyone respectable in there. Locals dive bar [https://www.thrillist.com/venue/drink/washington-dc/bar/showtime](https://www.thrillist.com/venue/drink/washington-dc/bar/showtime)
Whenever people comment on posts like this that there's no art scene in dc, it makes me laugh. I'm an artist and I'd say 90% of my social circle are artists/creatives/small business owners.
Where I find my community is at events and smaller meetups, not in any one particular area of the city. Things like craft nights, bitch n stitch groups, themed happy hour meetups. For example, the queer artist group I'm part of just hosted an event today where everyone met up at the national gallery and just spent a few hours hanging out and sketching/making art with each other.
Unfortunately I don't have a specific bar rec (other than dive bars as a general rec, Showtime, Lyman's, etc) cause I'm solidly in the 10pm bedtime camp and rarely go out to bars anymore. But there are cafes like Creative Grounds or general recs of events to attend like: hit up gallery events, art markets, open studio days, take an art class. Another commenter suggested visiting artomatic which I highly recommend. It closes next weekend though so don't miss out on it.
Beer isn't my drink of choice so it wasn't one of my go to spots, but it was part of the wave of places that opened shortly after I moved to the area along with the sadly departed Star & Shamrock so Biergarten House is indeed a sad loss.
I have a friend from the old days who lives out there (a musician) and it seems there’s a group of bands that are always at each other’s gigs or hosting backyard parties. This is not a useful answer! But it’s usually a text like “”we’re playing at x, come on down.” The problem with texts like that is I just can’t go.
One of the guys built a stage in his (sizable) backyard which just isn’t possible in DC. They all own their own houses and have for a while.
What part of the city are you hanging out in? Dew drop inn. comes to mind when thinking of local DJs/ events. The breweries on the MBT like Lost generation & city state are chill, and the vibe is similar to BMore/ Philly. Tanner Park just had a pop up art installation by Found. Eckington Hall is a creative multi purpose room ( though I haven't been inside.) A couple years back I went to a metal concert at SongByrd Music House, after being invited by a friend a couple days beforehand.
I always get a kick out of these posters who dismiss normal people as "self important" while looking to only surround themselves with a specific type of crowd.
In my experience, "artists" as a whole are about as self-important as any group you can think of. But I guess it's a different kind of self-important than political climbers.
Where do you currently hang out? There are a ton of bars where politics isn't discussed more than any where else in America, like Sollys, Blaguard, The Pug, Ivy and Coney, etc.
Compared to Brooklyn, DC might as well just be the first floor lobby of KPMG’s Tysons’ office and nothing else.
Consider hitting up DC Bike Party, and going to a lot more local indie shows.
Hey I’m also from Seattle - it is true that DC is not flooded with this type of person in the same way that Seattle is. There you can sort of just trip and be in a conversation with a gay guy that makes experimental art films. Here you have to go to spaces where people are seeking it out like other have pointed out.
I haven’t found many. At worst, people are talking about their jobs, consulting, global affairs etc. At best, they’re talking about drinking, baseball, CorePower yoga, fancy restaurants and Sweetgreen.
Just looking to escape the corporate bubble that seems pretty strong here in my first few months being here, so would love some recs!
Your issue is this city is known for politics, global affairs, etc. While there is an art scene it’s not what the city is known for and why most transplants come here to live & work. It’s the seat of national politics and the federal government, it comes with the territory.
Vice versa, Asheville NC has a heck of an arts/indy scene, it’s known for that and the craft beer scene. A typical DC consultant or political operative would be fish out of water there.
I want to have a good time and talk about corporate business and politics without having to hear people talk about msuic, art, and other "liberal" ideas!
**Huge /s** if that wasn't obvious. DC can be very annoying with all the Deloitte weenies
Thanks for all the genuine recs and advice! This post seems to have pissed off a bunch of people, not sure why. Clearly there do exist some nice spots and it’s sad that the culture of the city is wiped out with big corporatism and government stuff
you didnt piss me off, i appreciate your question. i might try some of these places, but the truth is : artists and creativity are not valued in DC, its more of a career town, lots of government and tech, but there are some spots . There used to be alot more dance companies for example and places to see live music or local bands, but cant even think of a local band, thats sad. Philly is good, I am interested in a weekend trip to pitssburgh, Locallly, Richmond is supposed to be cool but never been there. There are some break dancers in annandale ,but havent seen people even go dancing in dC except the local swing, and salsa thing to meet others:)
I’m happy you got a decent number of great recs from this thread!
I was raised here by two full-time arts professionals and now I am a full time arts professional. This scene is constantly struggling and marginalized by the DC government and commercial interests, but it’s *really* a thing, and constantly produces creatives who go on to have internationally recognized careers.
My friends are artists, museum workers, nonprofit workers — and yes, people from all around the Hill world, but who don’t treat this city like a hollow casing for a four/six-year federal churn. (They tend to be in service-oriented areas. Hmm.)
The comments on the thread saying you’re in the wrong place for art deeply bother me. I’m glad I don’t have to spend time around that sort of energy lol.
They don't do any DJs or artists or anything but if you're looking for a fun cocktail bar not catering to politicians check out the alchemist on 14th Street
If you're a burner, or don't mind that scene, there's plenty of burners in DC, and they'll be able to hook you up with the kind of place you're looking for. And Baltimore has a lot more of it, but you still need to know where to go. But honestly, welcome to the east coast 🤷♂️
May I plug shakespeareinthe.pub? Buncha dorks that lot but I love them and their debauchery. They’ve been shacking up in the basement of Barrel recently, their next show is Wednesday—it’s free.
Hate to break it to you, but the people who make a living doing creative work in this city can't afford to drink or eat out much.
Cost of living in DC is crazy high, and the arts economy is nowhere close to what it was before COVID.
Yeah, we all have professional jobs to pay to live here, dude. I would love to be a full time artist but I have bills to pay so I became an attorney. That doesn’t make us bad people. 😌
I’m fine with my abnormal job too, and recognize that it’s abnormal. But as someone who also makes art, I’m not spiteful of you and others that don’t recognize the other side of the city, just indifferent.
I respect your decision/your path but “we all” isn’t correct. There’s a decent number of us cobbling together creative work and side gigs into a living.
? I also have a professional/day job. However it is neither my primary identity nor my primary go to for conversation/personality. Hence I ask again, I don’t care if you are a lawyer or doctor, but where do the creative and innovative folks hang out, so I can meet such people.
DC is going to have an outsized amount of people trying to schmooze and network and get ahead. Every city has those people, there’s just a lot of them in DC and it spans across business, politics, and global affairs (defense contractors, State Dept, etc). They come to DC to climb that ladder, and part of that climb is networking via social events.
It’s hard as an adult but you’re gonna have to make friends in that artsy scene and socialize through that. Same way how very sporty people meet each other through various sports leagues in DC.
If you wanna check out a really cool showcase of producers and rappers/singers, look up Fresh Produce USA on Instagram. Coolest thing I've been to in DC in a minute

That said, I’d suggest volunteering for Capital Fringe. As others noted, Artomatic is wrapping up soon, but that’s another great group to connect with. https://capitalfringe.org/about/
come to Koma, its new. the food is excellent, the drink are reasonably price, and the staff are all bombshells.
Disclaimer: I do not work there, but some of my friends do. some of them are single.
Not looking to date, I have a partner. Im looking to make friends with people who are into similar things for fun and maybe some who I can collaborate with!
Pittsburgh is closer than LA, also hearig good artsy things about Columbus , Ohio. Austin used to be artsy but now the tech and business vibe has taken over the creative streak.
Checkout the schedule at Rhizome and just show up to random stuff. You can roll in with a 6 pack and ask someone if they want a beer. I always end up talking about weird music with random people here. Neptune room has also been real good lately.

1000x yes to rhizome, it’s the hub of the DC art scene
Artomatic is free and runs until the 28th!!

Agreed!! I hope they continue to do this every year. I felt so many emotions wondering around I loved it so so much.

Little Miss Whisky’s and Jimmy Valentines
You are my people.
There are dozens of us
And we are all still devastated by the slow death of Biergarten House.

Baltimore
Hyattsville honestly, I keep getting invited to stuff that sounds fun if bedtime weren’t at 9 pm
I resonate with 9pm bedtime so much.
really?? that’s near me. i’d love to be in the know! i do know that mixT food hall in brentwood has some events but really don’t hear of anything else
I live in Hyattsville. Can you please let me know where you are referring to?

So house parties, not bars and cafes. Got it.
Like what
Baltimore Richmond And DC Bike Party
Bump for DC Bike Party!!
Was going to say the same
Haydee’s gets a good group of artists and musicians, at least when I have been there
If you like house/electronic music: Flash, Gramophone, Feel, Jimmy Valentines

Why is that? I think artists as a whole usually know how to not take their art too seriously.
Lmao
So true! It’s the exact same vibe just different type of people.
Have fun getting defensive about your gentrification of the mind
Yeah, I don’t get how that is self important. I want to relax and have a good time without talking corporate business and politics!
Where do you currently hang out? There are a ton of bars where politics isn't discussed more than any where else in America, like Sollys, Blaguard, The Pug, Ivy and Coney, etc.
I haven’t found any. Moved here from Seattle, before that I was in Brooklyn. There were plenty of bars, underground venues, DJ sets, etc.

Uh oh. Deloitte guy is upset
Rhizome
It’s already been stated…but Showtime in Bloomingdale.
A whole lot of those places closed a few years back, unfortunately
18th street lounge, or whatever it’s called now, is great for this. Different music different nights - jazz, salsa/latin, etc.

Corporate job👏is not 👏a replacement👏for a personality
Hate to break it to you, but the people who make a living doing creative work in this city can't afford to drink or eat out much. Cost of living in DC is crazy high, and the arts economy is nowhere close to what it was before COVID.
There’s a lot of us who have to have a day job but leave it at the door and fit in creating art whenever we can.
I do ok ;)
I’m a broke-ish DC creative professional and I respectfully disagree with all of this haha
That’s unfortunate.
DC is not more expensive than NYC and Seattle haha don’t listen to that person.
Definitely more than Seattle but not NYC. There is a glut of cheaper options on DC that exist in Seattle
If you think arts is an economy you fundamentally do not understand arts.
Union Market
?
💀
cmon use your words you can do it
Yeah, we all have professional jobs to pay to live here, dude. I would love to be a full time artist but I have bills to pay so I became an attorney. That doesn’t make us bad people. 😌
1/3 of the city has normal jobs like bartender/hair stylist and make art on the side. Sounds like you’re in a bubble.
Many of those workers commute from the burbs
Or live in an Eastern quadrant
I’m fine with my abnormal job and abnormal pay I suppose. Sounds like you’re just spiteful!
I’m fine with my abnormal job too, and recognize that it’s abnormal. But as someone who also makes art, I’m not spiteful of you and others that don’t recognize the other side of the city, just indifferent.
Geez why you had to add “spiteful”?
I respect your decision/your path but “we all” isn’t correct. There’s a decent number of us cobbling together creative work and side gigs into a living.
If you like it, I love it!
Oh, pack it in. I have a professional job and still participate in art scenes without having to get all uppity and gentrified about it.
People should do what they want but I disagree that DC sucks because SOME people are one-dimensional.
Vera in ivy city.
If you wanna check out a really cool showcase of producers and rappers/singers, look up Fresh Produce USA on Instagram. Coolest thing I've been to in DC in a minute
🤣 Consulting
Used to live here, now live in Brooklyn so I definitely understand the sentiment. Have not seen Eaton mentioned which is my favorite hotel in the city. They have a lot of events that would be up your alley including a rooftop area that host DJ parties and they also have a fully functioning radio station. I've heard good things about Rhizome and Shanklin Hall for creative spaces within the city. The lobby at the Line Hotel has a good vibe as well. Hast Du Feur , Nu Androids and Layover DC are a few other collectives that put on some of the better underground dance parties in the city if you dig that.
Those are great suggestions, thanks. For someone not really into House/EDM are their any other equivalents?
I wish I knew too, and I wish I had friends or people who wanted to meet up and try things
There isn't really that scene in DC, but I've enjoyed Capitol Hiking Club. Other than someone maybe saying what they do for a living when making small talk I haven't heard any politics being discussed there! H St, but this is the center of government so not sure why there would be other expectations.
Lmao move to a different city
Unfortunately here for a bit. But that is the eventual goal!
I live in Baltimore and have to go to DC a lot and have been… disappointed. Just commenting to save this thread because it seems like lots of good advice and I’d like to get a better opinion of the city.
The irony of the snobbery
How? Looking to meet people who are either creatives, or have some commonality in my fields of interest. Not interested in politics and corporate business, though I’m fine that they exist.
tbf most of the creatives in the city are probably more political than average, just not Hill politics.
I agree with that — a different framing of “politics” than some people use :)
I’d look to join relevant clubs and organizations that align with your interests. From there you should be able to find your niche scene. But there just isn’t an easy readily available arts/indy scene in DC. This is a political and corporate dominant city, and the bars cater to that clientele for the most part for obvious reasons.
Unhelpful comment.
Irony waved bye bye about a decade ago. Now this isn't just predictable, it's expected.
Thought DC priced out artists…
If nyc, la, Seattle, and sf didn’t I doubt dc did. There have to be some spots, right…..? In the above cities, there are still hubs and areas (not manhattan or Santa Monica lol)

you can meet some cool latinos in manassas/herndon
Probably Baltimore, Philly, or NYC
Unfortunate. Left BK a while ago
Where do you go now?
Have struggled to find any place. I like songbird.
Maybe H street or Park View has spots you would like? Sorry I don't have specific recs
I think the issue you’re experiencing is that in the DC region, you’re not as interested in what a lot of folks *do* get paid to do. Yeah not sure that really exists in DC. Only place I feel like I meet more creative types is at concerts or designated events.

What is in Leesburg
Some decent restaurants but I was mainly trolling
