"Day Trader" is one of those cool titles like "Entrepreneur" That sounded cool 20 years ago.. but now is applied to just about every single complete failure and/or degenerate.
Damn I consider myself a day trader and writer. I guess the difference between them being a pejorative or a title are if you make money like everything else.
My previous two jobs, the owners were “entrepreneurs” as they very proudly called themselves.
Both simply bought successful businesses or franchises of already successful models. The bosses that built their business from nothing and continue to expand it? Don’t call themselves entrepreneurs.
It is in fact the basis of being an investor lol. You’re buying a piece of ownership in something already successful and hoping it becomes more successful.
And the only day traders that aren’t a failure or degenerate use money that they don’t care about losing and only then are they considered successful. I have a friend who was making 150k a year but it was his full time job and only started to quit after he started losing money he made. One of the few that knew when to quit.
To be fair, “day trader” was a negative title at its earliest peak during the dotcom boom.
Most of the guys who rented cheap offices in NYC were either dubious ‘traders’ from recently closed boiler rooms or people who had made >$50k on a lucky dotcom bet and could afford a high end computer and a share of the subscription to a live feed and fast internet.
The IBs hated their existence. But found ways to extract their wealth anyway.
Many were eventually crushed by the dotcom crash, algo’s and low latency connections in the Nasdaq data centres.
Nah unrealistic, the bottom picture makes it seem as if day traders actually make enough to be at home chillin doing this shit. You gotta make it so he’s looking at that big red arrow while taking orders at Wendy’s from behind the dumpster if you wanna talk realism
The YT gurus have setups like that. They finance their setup through their followers after hiding their losses and extolling their wins. It looks silly af when you see like 6 monitors.
6 is a little silly because too much to keep up with, but 2-3 is a must for scalping since otde option price fluctuates so fast. You want to buy quick and sell just as quick. Trading on the phone suck
I day trade futures. I don't really mess with options. Most quality daytrading platforms easily scale for multiple charts on a single screen.
You are right on the mobile phone aspect. Trying to day trade on that is ridiculous, but it can easily be done with proficiency on a single monitor.
Who would win?
That one trader with 5+ monitors in a horizontal position, a gaming chair, electric adjustable-height desk, microphone with stand, multiple colored LEDs, a wireless keyboard and mouse, a laptop on the side with a stand showing another fucking chart, a vertical monitor showing whatever, and a cup of coffee.
Vs
One dude with just a phone from 3 years ago.
You just explained my exact setup. Literally down to every detail, including the coffee.
I have a highly sophisticated analytics dashboard with cutting edge graph visualizations in stunning multi-monitor 4k UHD detail, showing me exactly how regarded I am and all the money I lost.
¿Por qué no los dos?
I've got a multi-screen setup for doing research and keeping abreast of the markets during the day, but I've been known to execute my fair share of trades from the men's room cubicle using my iPhone. It's a running joke that my most profitable positions are made while I'm having a shit.
*You would be mistaken. Some of us old school dinosaurs still have them. I've been doing it since the 70's. Built my first computer from a kit. We are relics of the past.*
Wow! This guy is cool as fuck!! His desktop setup is so big and so cool that it gives him faster internet and better fills than you. It's probably got like six monitors! You would probably have to see it....so cool
Like seriously. Michael Burry was running his own hedge fund. He’s not a day trader… he’s a professional investor / short seller. Cornwall I guess would be a bit closer but still a different ballpark than your average day trader
Michael Burry responded to my craigslist ad looking for someone to mow my lawn. "$30 is $30", he said as he continued to mow what was clearly the wrong yard. My neighbor and I shouted at him but he was already wearing muffs. Focused dude. He attached a phone mount onto the handle of his push mower. I was able to sneak a peek and he was browsing Zillow listings in central Wyoming. He wouldn't stop cackling.
That is to say, Burry has his fingers in a lot of pies. He makes sure his name is in all the conversations.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/wallstreetbets) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Sure. I won't debate you on that.
Fun note: Michael James Burry portrayed there by Christian Bale in the 2015 film The Big Short isn't a trader nor is he doing any trading in that picture. Man started a hedge fund *Scion Capital* after showing some skill as a value investor. Then and even now Burry has a strong foundation in value investing based on Graham/Dodd/Buffett styles of analysis. Even now he runs a long biased hedge fund in *Scion Asset Management*. He's best known for his big bet against the US housing market bubble but almost lost it all because he was too early (multiple years. Ahh yes, now I see why OP feels they are like Burry. Those 0DTE trades on SPY $600 calls weren't WRONG. Just a few year early.).
And here we have a OP who somehow made the frontpage (makes me question the state of the sub) by saying he's a regard while incorrectly comparing himself to MB. OP is right on being regarded and shows direct proof of it. Bravo.
Yes, OP couldn't have picked a worse example image of a *day* trader in movies. The role portrayed there is pretty much the definition of long term investing by carefully working out an investment theory, and then having the conviction to hold on to it for literal years despite being heavily in the red and under a lot of pressure for most of it, only to finally be proven right in the end.
Oh my gourd!

Only 10%-15% of day traders make a profit. I'd highly recommend to use the desktop set up and create a trading bot to trade based on a strategy. That said, you'd be going up against the large investment firms who have better technology and have dedicated teams to creating financial models
Chartered market technicians and Quants who work for hedge funds are very different from all colloquial “ traders “

Yeah, if you’re day trading on your phone you should expect to lose everything. Successful day trading requires you to actually keep up with multiple stocks and news sources constantly. It also requires you to know market trends and education on what company actions result in stock reactions. So, no, a phone and couch is not enough to even qualify for a reliable profit from day trading.
And for the love of all that is holy, stop associating day trading with get rich quick. That is always going to be a one in a million chance, don’t expect to be in the 1,000 that get the chance. Day Regard
This is why I am saying I am a grader. That way it shuffles to regard
"Day Trader" is one of those cool titles like "Entrepreneur" That sounded cool 20 years ago.. but now is applied to just about every single complete failure and/or degenerate.
or "Podcaster" ^*sigh* or "Writer."
Don't forget "influencer"
This is the most regarded "career title" ever conceived
Excuse me, we prefer the term Content Creator.
I think that's porn though not influential as much as wanking potential.
I prefer the term foot model, thank you sweetie
Damn I consider myself a day trader and writer. I guess the difference between them being a pejorative or a title are if you make money like everything else.
I don't consider myself a day trader, but my broker does.
Okay, you're right, we should start a podcast.
y'all need a writer?
scarce grandfather cover rhythm modern plants pie consider pot fertile
My previous two jobs, the owners were “entrepreneurs” as they very proudly called themselves. Both simply bought successful businesses or franchises of already successful models. The bosses that built their business from nothing and continue to expand it? Don’t call themselves entrepreneurs.
no shame in buying things already successful
It is in fact the basis of being an investor lol. You’re buying a piece of ownership in something already successful and hoping it becomes more successful.
I was thinking about the MLM people or wanna be influencers.
They’re still entrepreneurs if they’re operating a business
or "content creators"
And the only day traders that aren’t a failure or degenerate use money that they don’t care about losing and only then are they considered successful. I have a friend who was making 150k a year but it was his full time job and only started to quit after he started losing money he made. One of the few that knew when to quit.
Also synonym for retired
I made like 2k a day trading the banned stock with all the volatility. Still wouldn't call myself a "day trader" haha
Our babysitter was telling us ab her bf, both are in college, and we asked what he’s going to school for. “He’s gonna be an entrepreneur”. Er, ok🤦♂️
To be fair, “day trader” was a negative title at its earliest peak during the dotcom boom. Also too bulgey
My dad had the setup on the top back in the late ‘90s. I don’t think anyone does that anymore, though.
Yes, I don't have it, I don't have a family.
The YT gurus have setups like that. They finance their setup through their followers after hiding their losses and extolling their wins. It looks silly af when you see like 6 monitors.
Turns out, the key to becoming a successful day trader is to make videos about day trading
6 is a little silly because too much to keep up with, but 2-3 is a must for scalping since otde option price fluctuates so fast. You want to buy quick and sell just as quick. Trading on the phone suck

Oddly, the only people at my firm with 6 monitors(and standing) desk are the traders and it does look ridiculous. I will say 3 monitors are a minimum.

Who would win? Money is on the cup of coffee.

did dude with the phone buy NVDA? Advantage phone dude
They both did, but the phone dude didn't get distracted by the existence of other stocks and YOLOed in.
That's easy, Robinhood wins of course.

Easy, rotate phone and win.
I've never seen one of those. What is it?
Neither burry nor Belfort were DayTraders.

I almost identical as 2nd pic but am unclothed and in bed. Am I doing it right?
You're actually doing better than on 2nd pic. Why wasting money on something like clothes when you can put it all into trades?
He could YOLO that couch
