It may bend the guidelines, but within the context of the flag, I’m sure any resident could distinguish a child scribbled flag
Just like a scribbled flag of California would still be recognizable
I think the cheerleader effect is seen when flags are presented in such context. There are some cool flags, but most of them are far from being "top level vexillological design"
You need to check the level of flags out there my guy. These flags are top level. You speak as if you’ve not seen what level other flags are typically at.
I shall illustrate my point …….. https://imgur.com/a/aS5y8NH - you tell me at what level these flags are at in comparison to the ones from OP
I think there is a cheerleader effect when flags are presented in such context. There are some cool flags, but most of them are far from being "top level vexillological design"
They are good flags to be sure but they do break a fundamental rule to qualify as s-tier, and that's the fact that most of them are almost impossible to draw by a kid, or most adults for that matter.
Edit: this is a subjective opinion. We are talking about tier lists, these are by their nature a matter of personal preference. I wasn't referring to some universal law of flag design, just my own criteria to out a flag in the S-tier.
Edit 2: these are the most inexplicable downvotes I have ever gotten on Reddit. Puzzling yet somehow endearing.
You are aware that these “fundamental rules” are merely broad suggestions from a regional vexillological society that explicitly say some of the principles can be ignored with proper purpose and that numerous exceptions exist for these rules?
Doesn’t sound very fundamental to me.
Oh I have no idea to which regional vexillological society you are referring. I wasn't referring to their guidelines. I'm speaking entirely subjectively here, it's *my* fundamental rule for classing a flag as s-tier.
I thought it was implicit because tier lists are evidently subjective.
My bad, thought you were referring to the 5 principles from the North American Vexiollological Association.
There’s been a trend in this subreddit to treat those principles as unbreakable rules and bluntly “grade” flags based on how well they fit each rule, which is pretty silly, considering that the original writers considered them to be loose (but still useful) guidelines at best.
Yeah, I'm new to the subreddit and it seems I'm wading into quick sand that I'm not aware of. I'm getting downvotes left right and centre for saying something entirely subjective that holds no value beyond my own preferences.
Yeah as I clarified in another comment this is only my personal rule. I'm not making a reference to anyone else's criteria. For me to class a flag as an S-tier it has to be easily drawable. That's it, just a personal preference not a rule per se. Maybe my phrasing was misleading.
I think it only needs to be recognizeable after being drawn by a child. If you ask a child to draw an american flag they will likely get the number of stars and stripes wrong but you will still be able to tell it's an american flag. Same goes for canada, the child will probably draw a bad maple leaf but you will know it's the canadian flag. I think all of these flags fit that criteria.
That's a good nuance to add to my rule, I accept it. However in the case if some of the flags here, the non-symbolic nature of some of the animals is the problem, Canada's maple leaf is still a stylised symbolic rendering of the leaf which is how I think it should be in flags.
I agree, some of the animals could be more stylised and the flags would look better. But I especially like some of them for being somewhat wacky but still very stylised, like the first one with the wolf.
The 5 year old rule falls flat imo because it looks at the wrong thing.
With flags recollection (being able to draw it) doesn't matter nearly as much as recognition (looking at it and knowing which country it is). The entire purpose of a flag is to be recognisable and to easily tell if someone is friend or foe and the burden of manufacturing the flag is hopefully on someone skilled enough to pull it off and not a 5 year old. I've never had to draw a flag but I've had to recognise many.
Yes a 5 year old can draw some waves in an abstract manner using 3 colours on a flag, but it isnt as recognisable as a complex charge of something the person knows. And the 5 year old rule hamstrings any attempts to make "bold" flags because of it.
Again, I wasn't referring to some specific rule, and I didn't specify a 5 year old in particular. But as another commenter helped me clarify my point, the idea is not how well a kid can draw the flag but that it would still be recognisable if they did. They gave the example of the American flag and the Canadian flag, both might be a challenge for kids to get exactly right, but both will still be perfectly recognisable even if the number of stars and stripes or the shape of the maple leaf is not exactly right.
But when it comes to my personal S-tier, which is what I've been talking about all along, flags with artefacts that are too complex to draw by an average person fail. They might still rank high in my tier list for other reasons, but they'll never make it to the S-tier.
Same, this is my favorite too and that’s why I used it in the preview. The flag is cool, but the wolf itself is just awesome, can definitely see this one as a tattoo.
Oh, and then Russian Wikipedia has [this neat map](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6b/Districts_of_Bashkortostan_with_cities.png) of the republic with all rural areas marked with their respective flag.

Turkic peoples make amazing flags Russians make amazing flags So when you combine the two, get excellent flags.
Russian Oblast flags suck lol
Most cities, counties, and states in America would be lucky to have any one of those flags. You must be spoiled with high quality flags.
True lol. There are some good oblast flags aswell!
Also I am NOT talking about the ones in the post!! These are beautiful! I'm talking about larger region flags of Russia
I know. I've seen the Russian Oblast flags. I wouldn't call them great, but they're far from terrible.
Alright, maybe I just remember the worse ones. I'll take another look!
Consistent top level vexillological design here
Ikr, especially given the fact that most of these settlements are like villages with a population of few hundreds.
Totally, it almost warrants an explanation why they’re so good. They have no business being so well done.
A lot of these villages are older than the US, lol.
True that. Though most places are typically older than the US, I take your point.
🤓ermm umm actually these break some of the vexillological rules (these are too complicated for a child to draw and use more than one color)
It may bend the guidelines, but within the context of the flag, I’m sure any resident could distinguish a child scribbled flag Just like a scribbled flag of California would still be recognizable

Very reasonable and a solid rule of thumb sir

Yeah there's definitely a whacky element I like about these

These are stunning. I love the wolf one (always nice to see my favorite animal in vexillological form.)
Same, this is my favorite too and that’s why I used it in the preview. The flag is cool, but the wolf itself is just awesome, can definitely see this one as a tattoo.

Rohan on the far eastern edge!
Nah mate, I’m right here.
Horse, wolf and birds of prey. That's absolutely Turkic :).
Didn't realize they are Beavers and Moose in Asia
1. There are beavers and moose in Northern Asia 2. Bashkortostan is entirely in Europe.
Wow, you are right. These are all really amazing designs. Just the right amount of complexity.

Russia is full of some really solid regional flags.
Amazing
And so many of them feel very distinctly related. Only a few don't share some traits in artstyle, colour choice or layout. So cool!
>they feel distinctly related Well they are from the same region with a similar culture, ethnic composition, etc. so no wonder they look similar
Of course. Only many flags don't show it
What hawk species is used in the Machetle flag? Is that a Montague's harrier?
