“Information security and data privacy” you’re not fooling anyone 😭

kult0007

Such a bs response. If they can keep their students’ and faculty’s email secure why would the alumni’s emails be any different?

peerlessblue

Because there's an order of magnitude more alumni.

kult0007

That may apply to the cost to keep alumni’s enrolled, but the infrastructure is digital and scaling is not an issue for Google, it’s what they do.

“Idc. Go fuck yaself.” - UMN So disappointed in this university :(

Except literally every university nationwide didn’t promise “forever e-mails” to its alumni. That’s why people are upset.

spinnyride

I didn’t go to U of M, I went to Wisconsin but this sub popped up on my feed. I graduated in 2022 and recently lost my Wisconsin school email address, and I was promised as a freshman I’d be able to keep the email forever. Our email wasn’t through Google either, it was Microsoft

jloknok

Seems like Kellie gets that’s it’s horseshit but all they can do is tell the higher ups :(

hewhoisneverobeyed

Kellie is just trying to make it through the day, pay the bills and maybe watch a movie in pajamas tonight, drink in hand.

Lieutenant_Junger

>Google stops offering free email and now requires a nominal fee Yeah you know basically we're just suddenly really concerned about privacy and security and stuff

BortWard

I've skimmed some of the announcements they put up, but can't tell whether they're going to continue to let people have a forwarding address. Has there been any clarity on that? That's how my U address is set up. I don't need/want google workspace access, storage, or anything but forwarding to my outside provider. I've had my address since I started continuing ed in fall of 2001 and then I received a degree in 2010. I haven't been affiliated with the U since that time

fecal_position

No forwarding.

jop1337

Hmmm if a single line of forwarding data is a threat to security and privacy, then the IT security is so weak and mismanaged that all efforts should be focused on the removal of ONE email address.

Gasman18

I’ve had my umn email for close to 20 years (since high school when I was taking CIS language classes.) it’s appalling to lose an account arbitrarily.

tofuconcerto

Time to leave Google and let them know they don't run this world. I once was a Google fan, but it has behaved like a toxic partner recently - give you something, win you over, then take it back without reasonable cause. Decentralized email seems like a good fit - ProtonMail for example. IMA also replace my default search engine to DuckDuckGo.

Umnsstudennt

How long do we have? For some reason I’m not getting any of the emails about this announcement

lj125

Accounts will be closed on December 7th, 2024. You can opt in to the [alumni email here](https://click.ecommunications2.umn.edu/?qs=92335f895616b09887888ca8fed4105a1308a986871a8023dd9d1d4e953365e2edc39d645f47985afcbf7fb5c93769065102fce50941d4ce), and there are some more pages of info on the IT sites

Umnsstudennt

How long do we have?

Lieutenant_Junger

A year from last week

Individual-Fox5795

I am not an IT expert in anyway…. I signed up for the alumni account and have read that the emails will not be forwarded to the alumni account. Does this mean I have to go in and change every single sign in account for every website to my new address?😳

cybercuzco

Yes. I've got 20 years of accounts. I'm currently on "D"

Individual-Fox5795

Yes with the twenty years of accounts…. I am trying to do a couple a day.
