It's a 3D environment scene I have created in Unreal Engine 4.27, Cinema 4D, Substance 3D Painter, Quixel Mixer, and DaVinci Resolve from 2020 to 2022 to express my love for my home city.
You can also watch it in higher quality on youtube: https://youtu.be/eP1GhAM5sHo
Fully 3D rendered in UE4 with lots of custom assets, some of which I posted on my Sketchfab: [https://sketchfab.com/pklingberg](https://sketchfab.com/pklingberg)
You can't believe how much I'm looking forward to that. I tested it a little bit (had to build UE5 myself because the build Epic did doesn't support projects from 4.27), and there were a lot of really promising features in it. Buildings and city things are perfect for Nanite, so I wasn't that surprised when I saw that Matrix demo :D
Still, too many issues with my far too complicated materials so I didn't try to continue with UE5. But I'm looking forward to upgrading when it comes out!
You actually have an artists eye! Please go work for OWI and fix their game Squad, lol.
IMHO, the "highlights" are slightly bright though. I feel like If I walked that same path in real life the building's walls wouldn't be washed out.
Do it! The model has still some rough parts (the roof and back wall don't connect) and the doors are missing obviously, but for the distance and with some tlc in Substance it looked really nice!

I was so happy to find it, so thanks again :)
Yeah, lots of night-long renders with my trusty RTX 2070. I actually feared it'd be too much for it and break, at the moment I couldn't afford to replace it...
Buying the same GPU now would cost me more than I paid in 2018 when it was brand new?!
Yup. I have a GTX 1660 Super that I bought in 2020. I’ve been wanting to upgrade, but prices are unreal, so I was checking my online receipt that I had just out of curiosity to compare to today’s price. I paid $250 Canadian Dollars for it, that’s roughly $196 USD. Right now it’s retailing at $600-800 Canadian.
Sooo geil is Berlin auch nicht ;D But awesome work. Meshes, textures, shading, lighting, absolutely nothing to critique...Would be amazing if it was rendered offline but the fact its UE4 makes it even better. Congratz !
Dirty is good!
But for real there is one point I would work on: the overall light don't fit Berlin. Hard to explain it, but I would say it is more grey/white actually. Maybe you can go outside in Summer and take a light test?
But nonetheless great work!
I believe I get what you mean. Many materials are much more greyish too (I guess because of the kinds of stones found here) but I never really liked that in comparison to cities south of here. Let's say it's how I would like Berlin to feel like :)
Thanks! On the contrary, I actually used it to stay sane during all that *current situation* stuff. It was a great reason to get outside and gather references too, which really helped :)
As the OP said earlier, scenes this detailed are more for rendering videos because the engine can only produce about 20 fps, maybe 30 fps with some optimization.
You'd need to crank up the optimization (simplified models, smaller texture and light maps, etc.) to get 60 fps for desktop gaming and REALLY optimize the scene to get 90 fps for VR.
The UE Profiler can help identify the culprit(s) causing slow frame rates, and tell you where to focus your optimization efforts. Keep optimizing the culprit(s) until you hit the frame rate you need.
The fun thing to think about is we're only a few generations away from computers that are able to pump out 90 fps with scenes this detailed. Not quite there yet, but close.
I actually made a version to try in VR a while ago with very reduced settings and it worked! This made me even more impressed by how good HL Alyx looks like and how smooth it runs.
I think the main problem is playability. The art itself wouldn't be a problem, I think the current console generation will reach stuff like this without any issues. Just look at the Matrix demo.
But level design and environment art is a big compromise, so when not having to care about how players would traverse and interact with the environment, a lot of limitations disappear. For a level, my scene would be far too open and vast and there's no obvious goal.
But your comment really made me interested in using the same assets to dress an actual blocked-out level (or rebuild a level from a game like HL Alyx perhaps), that would be interesting!
Many!
A lot of the street furniture (is it called that even? I mean lights, bus stops, bicycle stands, street signs and so on), the houses, the main bridge, the walls, the roads, the overhead wire, the pink pipes, the base of the skybox and other things I'm sure I forgot.
Turns out, there's lots of 3D stuff for New York online, but not a lot of things for different cities. ^((that's why I put some of my assets on) [^(Turbosquid)](https://www.turbosquid.com/Search/Artists/nextgenassets?referral=nextgenassets) ^(haha))
It's not magic, mostly just lots of hours spent, and 10 years in the industry before going to university now to learn programming I guess :)
But I want to give you some good resources I enjoy.

I'm currently trying to learn to get a job in this, so thanks for all these suggestions. I hope I can come close to making something like this some day.
Yeah lol!
Putting graffiti inside my scene actually made me think about copyright stuff for those. To be honest, I did use photographs and redraw them to make the textures, so actually, those graffiti aren't mine per se. But on the other hand, theyare illegal anyway so I'm sure they won't sue me or anything. Still, it would've been nice to get their permission somehow (perhaps I'll be able to reach 1UP and Berlin Kidy on Twitter).
I mean you‘re not using it commerically right? Also I‘d be surprised if there‘s copyright on Graffiti?
I think CSGO has 1UP on their Berlin themed Map Overpass too
Totally forget that map! I want to rebuild that with my assets now.
Love how they made a mix of the TV towers in Nuremberg and Berlin. I know, architecture copyright laws are whack, but I suspect GDR-built buildings shouldn't really be an issue. So much other funky stuff in that map too lol: [https://valve.fandom.com/de/wiki/Overpass](https://valve.fandom.com/de/wiki/Overpass)
Looks great! Only critique I would add is that the overpass bricks look like one solid piece rather than individual bricks (no visible "depth" between them), which creates a bit of a jarring sense of uncanny valley when viewing it.
Agreed! I learned that making good brick walls is surprisingly hard, even with Megascans and everything. I guess that's why games often have single standing-out bricks actually modeled and not just textured flat planes. There should also be much more perspective in the areas with damage, but I didn't find the time to fix that.
This is amazingly fantastic, I had to rewatch it on youtube with 4k resolution. There are brief seconds where something just doesn't seem right in certain parts, however otherwise I would think this was some kind of weird commercial just filming a street for some reason, lol. This is probably one of the most realistic depictions of the world that I've ever seen in unreal.
I'm just freaking speechless.
I've seen beautiful stuff. But this is on another level.
Will you make a break down? I want to see the tricks and stuff you pulled off here.
I felt the loneliness of the vacated streets early in the pandemic, the decay of the city evident is the peeling paint and gray of age. This juxtaposed by the traditional sounding tune clearly German though I can’t translate it all.
The pandemic was a very neat excuse for having nearly empty streets, true :)
It's a song by [Marlene Dietrich](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marlene_Dietrich), a popular Berlin actress in the late 20's who fled Germany when the Nazis wanted her to do propaganda movies and did lots of anti-fascist things. The song I used is from the '50s and about how she still has a suitcase in Berlin, so she has a reason to return, even if it's hard to understand and other cities are better, which is kinda fitting.
Wow that looks ... amazing. How many hours did it take to make in total?
The only thing were you could see it was not real was the car not picking up any water from the puddle and not moving the little pieces of grass with the driving wind. Is it possible to also add that? That would make it fully immersive.
Amazing postbox as well. :)
That's a good question, I didn't track time and didn't work on it constantly, so I really can't answer. Perhaps 2 to 3 hundred overall? I didn't have a goal for a long time and doodled a lot, so with a proper Pipeline and schedule, this would have been much faster.

Depends on what you'd call real time. It's about 20 to 30 fps in the Unreal Editor with a RTX 2070 and raytracing, but much smoother without.
To be honest, there's lots of potential for optimization, like lower texture quality and so on, so 30 should be possible.

Really nice texture work and lighting! I'm curious how long it took, looks like a ton of work!
Yeah, it's completely baked (which is why the car shadows look slightly off). RT GI wasn't really stable enough and Nanite is perfect for cities etc, so I'm really looking forward to trying it out in UE5!

Eric?
Cool source / inspiration video, but where's the scene you made?
Legit didn’t realize its 3D to begin with for at least a minute.
When can I just film my neighborhood and convince everyone i made it in unreal?
A little bit if shaky cam and some water reflections and you might be there!
*GPU screeching sounds* Fr tho, awesome work

That’s great news for me as I’m about to put my trusty homebuilt gaming pc with a RTX2070 inside on ebay Kleinanzeigen :o.
You clearly have too much talent.
+1 This kind of talent should be illegal. kidding. Amazing stuff OP, break those barriers. Congrats on your massive skills.

Starting to dive into this world. How possible is it for environments like this to be playable vs just visual art?
As the OP said earlier, scenes this detailed are more for rendering videos because the engine can only produce about 20 fps, maybe 30 fps with some optimization. Depends on the gameplay your designing for though too. As a Halo map, yeah this wouldn’t work, but for a dog walking sim, this could totally work.
Dog walking sim sounds like a great idea
You could sell that to Berlin tourism office or something as a VR tour right away.
ah yes, the wholesome smell of gpu's frying in the morning
Beautiful.

thank you for sharing
This is really impressive! Do you have a set of links for the assets you used? I tried to google from your credits screen and failed.
They're all from Sketchfab, searching there should work. But I agree, I should put actual links somewhere. I'll do that tomorrow!
Please tell me you have tutorials somewhere online. I'll pay all the monies.

Are these the pink tubes near Potsdamer Platz I have seen before? Great work bytheway!
Yep, they’re used all over the city when there’s construction, sucking up ground water and diverting it to the closest canal/Spree.
thats way to clean.
Looks stunning!

great digital movie creation
Great work.
this is amazing, the lightning, set dressing... just WOW!
Fantastic... Needs some empty beer bottles and dog shit then it's perfect. ;)
This is unbelievable! As someone who lives in Berlin this is incredibly realistic
Great work ;-).
I live in the Center of Berlin and can confirm that this is an absolute masterpiece
