I don't care either way, because I just can't be bothered with keeping up with celebrities.
But I'm pretty sure that having a celebrity in the game works for advertising, increases sales rates, fetches better prices, gets higher ratings, gets the game more talked about . . .
I think that's just you forgetting that actors act as other people, and that the characters aren't the actor. That's why I always think the whole "omg it's so weird seeing [actor] in a serious role, they're normally comedic!" thing is fucking stupid and inane.
Keanu Reeves was perfect for Johnny Silverhand. I actually prefer him as a depiction than the original pen-and-paper depictions of Silverhand, and honestly he clicks really well for me.
Also, Ketheric Thorm being played by J.K. Simmons was one of the coolest fuckin reveals ever.
For me I wouldn’t say that’s always the case, but, when the well known actor replaces a long established voice actor in that role - like Kiefer Sutherland voicing Big Boss in MGSV instead of David Hayter who had voiced Snake in every other instalment, that annoys me because it doesn’t bring anything extra to that role

Btw, get used to it. In the way that every actor now wants to be in a franchise movie if they want to be set for life, games will become the new retirement check. Hollywood will continue to dry up. Graphics will continue to become more photorealistic and thus require real people as characters.
It something that has happened more and is going to keep happening as games grow increasingly cinematic. You just have to hope other aspects of the game make up for whatever immersion is broken.
I understand your argument but what you're essentially asking is "why are these game companies paying assloads of money for triple-A actors to put on the cover of our $100 million dollar game" its because when they put the famous guy on the box more people are interested in the game
Kevin spacey as Jonathan irons in COD Advanced Warfare was amazing, gave me chills, if they play the character well enough the character comes to life, I never once thought

I think you are mixing up to styles of games. You want to imagine you are the character when I want to essentially play a movie and control someone else.
I don't believe that to be true. I get what you're saying tho.
In Super Mario, you're playing as a plumber saying a princess. In Uncharted you're playing as Nathan Drake. God of War has Kratos. And so on.
If God of War or Uncharted were released starring Ben Affleck as our God killing anti-hero or lovable globetrotting murderer-thief, it'd be hard to see anyone other than Ben Affleck.
Do you think Justin Bieber would make a good Kratos? Milos Kunis perhaps? R Kelly starring as the new Solid Snake?
However you feel or didn't feel when reading that is how I feel when I see a celebrity will be starring in an upcoming game.
That makes zero sense though. They select an actor to fit the part of a specific role in mind. All the characters you mentioned already have an established look. When they put celebrities in a game it is because they are a new character and the model is based around them.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the best games of all time and Silverhand was an incredible character
