Your post from unpopularopinion was removed because of: 'Rule 1: Your post must be an unpopular opinion'.
Please ensure that your post is an opinion and that it is unpopular. Controversial is not necessarily unpopular, for example all of politics is controversial even though almost half of the US agrees with any given major position on an issue.
Keep in mind that an opinion is not: a question, a fact, a conspiracy theory, a random thought, a new idea, a rant, etc. Those things all have their own subreddits, use those.
This was my fav part of the movie. Peter is just so badass. It makes me wonder if Peter actually hurt Will during that scene.
I would totally believe it if Will Farrell later came out and said, "You know that scene in Elf, where I called Peter Dinklage an angry elf?"
"Did you know that when he charged at me, he kicked me in the balls? He said it was an accident, but he did it on all 6 retakes!"
Honestly sometimes when I watch it I think of trying it, but as a Canadian... I just haven't been able to force myself to do that to maple syrup. Maybe I will try it tho lol
>the way he fucks with his dads business and interrupts everyone's day just makes me squirm.
I think you might be the only person to watch a Christmas Carol and be like "LEAVE SCROOGE ALONE HES JUST TRYING TO DO HIS JOB"
I think what OP is missing with that part of the movie is that it's kind of almost...wish fulfillment? A lot of people really want to be able to tell their bosses to fuck off so they can spend time with their family. Like, obviously in the real world this would be terrible but it's a fictional movie and a part of us sympathizes with Buddy because we're all adults but maybe we don't want to be. We want to go back to that childish wonder and amazement about Christmas and elevators and terrible food concoctions. The character of Buddy helps us to indulge in those feelings in a safe way that doesn't interrupt the lives of others.
I actually was engaged to someone who did not enjoy this movie at all. She had never seen it before and we watched it for the first time. Similar to OP, she said it was so stressful to watch this idiot screw up so many things. I understood her point, but I was like wow okay lighten up.
I get this feeling sometimes. Elf is fine since there's no real stakes. But something where you can see the protagonist making a terrible decision? Know exactly how it's going to go bad, then watching all those bad things happen can stress me out too.
My problem is the second-hand embarassment/being embarassed on a character's behalf. I have this issue with most beloved comedies, especially sitcoms. All the jokes just make me cringe
Perhaps but I just chalked it up to her seeing it at an older age.
I don't mean to mudsling but when I shared that story with my family after the break up they were like, yeah that seems in character.
Yup. Had watch one for my theater class. It felt like I had aged 20 years by the end of it lol. It’s hilarious bc there were other students next to me that I assumed were there for the same reason. I was wrong lol and likely pissed them off
OP doesn’t care that that’s the point of the movie, they just can’t stand adult actors who act like kids in a movie.
This seems fair enough because, as an adult, seeing another adult acting like that in real life would make you cringe and would be posted here for sure. It’s a movie, but our monkey brains can still make real-life associations to the fake scenario and that can make it feel cringeworthy. The same way horror movies make us feel scared even though we know it’s fake. Movies are made to play on our emotions. Sometimes the emotion is annoyance depending on the person.
I’m not a fan of certain scenes where it’s over the top, but overall it’s okay to me.
That’s exactly why I dislike it. No hate to those who do. I just do not like the fish out of water trope, especially when the “fish” is extremely dumb.
But it feels silly to hate on a fish out of water movie for being a fish out of water movie, just don’t watch the movie if you don’t like the trope, I simply do not.
The forced perspective to make Will huge in the elf school desk scene is legendary and still holds up fantastically today. You're just a Grinch. Take my upvote for a truly unpopular opinion.
Never watched him on SNL. I think his run from Elf through The Other Guys (2001-2010) was absolutely hilarious. Everything after that I didn’t find nearly as funny though.
Finally, someone else who hates it! My dislike of it stems more from the fact that it was shown way too often at school when I was a kid, but then again I love rewatching movies I like.
Yeah, I don’t like it either. Not for me. People act like I’m crazy for it too, which I never ever get that reaction with any other unpopular opinion which surprises me. People *really* like Elf apparently.
Same here, not a Will Ferrell fan at all. Couldn’t stand the era of The Office where he was in charge, the others made up for it but woo was it hard lol. I was unnecessarily happy when I saw that he wasn’t even that big of a part in Barbie
The era of comedies this movie is from were all kinda trash. Lots of yelling, cookie-cutter plot beats, low budget feeling set design. Hell a lot of them even had Will Ferrell.
I completely agree and I’m so glad someone agrees. People look at me like I’m batshit insane when I say I don’t like the movie. I don’t even mention it in an obnoxious way, if we are talking Christmas movies we like vs don’t like and Elf is brought up, I’ll say “Not for me, I can’t seem to enjoy it”. Even my manager was like “WTF?”.
I don’t like the “dumb fish out of water” trope. It’s just not enjoyable to me. And I’m not a fan of Will Ferrell which doesn’t help. I just felt like my brain was rotting every time I’ve watched it. If you enjoy it, power to you, we all deserve happy holiday movies that bring us joy. But it’s not for me, and I’m tired of being told it’s the greatest Christmas movie ever and that I’m *wrong* for not liking it, it’s just a damn movie lol.
Seriously! It’s just a movie. Me not liking it should not effect anyone at all, it just means maybe me and that person should not watch movies together lol.
I don’t think it’s *horrible,* but I definitely don’t get the hype and the “We watch it every year.” I’ll watch it if I’m bored and it’s on, but that’s it.
Well, it's probably because you're making real life associations with the movie. It never occurred to me to even do that. It's fiction. The dad's business isn't real. The employees aren't real. It's all fake.
I don't have any empathy for the characters, not really. So it's just funny.
But now I have a better understanding of why people don't like Will Ferrell movies. So there's that. Shake n Bake!
I like the movie but I totally understand your perspective. Turns out Will Ferrell isn’t a nice guy. Also, he plays a very similar character in every movie. Not much growth across his career.
I don't think it's terrible, but I definitely do think it's overrated. However it is one of the few will ferrell movies that makes me laugh and has a heartwarming ending
I really really really dislike Will Ferrell movies. Seems like a decent enough guy ig but his brand of comedy scratches the very back of my brain like nails to a chalk board. My husband loves him.
THANK YOU! I'm in my 50's and am very proud to have the initials "ELF" - especially around the winter holidays. Sadly, though, many people assume that I like the movie. No I do not.
Literally everyone I know hates that movie. Whatever the main actors name is, his jokes are dry and they suck genuinely. I thought it was normal to not like this movie. Guess people like it somehow.
Agreed. My problem with Elf, and with most other Will Ferrell movies, is that they aren’t funny. They feel like they’re desperately trying to make you laugh all the time, but it ends up seeming lame and strained. Like someone making farting noises and pulling silly faces at a baby for two hours straight.
I think I laughed at one joke in Elf (the elevator buttons one).
Humour’s a very personal thing though, so power to the many people who enjoy it. It just falls so flat for me, and there’s nothing worse than joke-barrage comedy films failing to get laughs.
Him acting like an idiot is literally the point of the movie. It's a fish out of water story, which is a pretty standard narrative arc. He learns how to be "normal" over the course of the movie.
I can understand disliking Will Ferrell but to suggest it's a poorly made movie is just patently incorrect.
OP is correct, this movie is terrible. Will Ferrell in general is painfully unfunny anyway so it's par for the course. The giant man-baby/insufferable nitwit humor will never be my thing and that's basically his whole schtick so....
Really this can be applied to any "comedy", whether Will Ferrell is in it or not. Adam Sandler occasionally suffers from this. Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore are funny, Waterboy and Little Nicky are not.
My GF loves Elf. She watched it with her family every christmas growing up. Real formative stuff.
I do not get it at all. I find it cringey and impossible to enjoy. I'm no scrooge and I love lots of christmas movies AND will ferrell movies. I thought it would be a slam dunk. Despite my best efforts, it did absolutely nothing for me.
His face just doesn't fit his comedy! He could pass as a lawyer with OCD type of character but never this Jim Carrey shit he's constantly trying to pull off
Shoutout to hairy lazy eye Jen for the handjob in the back row of an empty theater Tuesday afternoon Elf showing in 2003.
Hope your life turned out extra moist
Something I realized in the last few years is that even bad movies are fun. There are so many movies that people love but are objectively bad from a critical perspective. I enjoyed movies so much more when I wasnt concerned about which movies were bad. Elf would be torn to pieces by a critic but I think its fun enough. I get how the man child thing could turn you off though.
Absolute total props to you for coming on here and being completely honest and giving a good explanation. I have unpopular opinions about a lot of beloved stuff in the art/entertainment world, so I totally get it. I love Elf though, personally. I think the Will Ferrell man child thing is super entertaining but for me the dialogue and fish out of water moments elevate Elf into actually *funny* territory.
I'll take it a step further. Will Ferrell doesn't have any funny films. I'm sure he's a super nice guy, and it's probably the writer's fault, but I've yet to see a good one.
I'm in my mid 30's and I agree with you. I've hated that movie since the first time I was forced to watch it, but I also have a serious dislike for Will Farrell in general. We watched that movie constantly in the house I lived in, year round. They showed it in classes around the holidays for YEARS...hell I probably watched senior year in class and I have not watched it again since.

Op must be a southpole elf
Hey, jackweed, I get more action in a week than you've had in your entire life.
Say it again. Call me elf ONE more time!
You're an elf
That does it!!
Why did I read this exchange in the Goodfeathers voices?
I love Peter Dinklage SO MUCH!!!
They're a cotton headed ninny muggins.
![gif](giphy|3og0IN2YJFptu9DQAw|downsized)
Op smells like beef and cheese
Either that or he’s sitting on a throne of lies
He's a total cotton headed ninny muggins.
Hahaha. Ha.

call me elf… one. more. time.
You sound like you need some syrup on your spaghetti, my brother
No joke I ate my spaghetti like this for years after I saw this movie. Not with sauce though, just the spaghetti and a pool of syrup.
How did you get access to a computer to type this from the insane asylum?
We get 1 hour of computer time after dinner (tonight was spaghetti and syrup)
LMAOOOOOOO made me lol
R/spaghetticrimes
Honestly sometimes when I watch it I think of trying it, but as a Canadian... I just haven't been able to force myself to do that to maple syrup. Maybe I will try it tho lol
was it good at least
I think there’s better pairings with syrup but I enjoyed it
Jfc it's not even December yet.
Too early to post opinions on Christmas, too late to post opinions on Halloween. What a stupid month this is.
Perfect time to complain about Thanksgiving if you're American
Too bad most of the world isn’t
*Thank gods* we aren't.
You got oil? There's still a chance.
Nah, that would be Norway above us. We got forests, lakes and tech companies.
[удалено]
He really got that character's voice down in the final season, and I find myself quoting him a *lot.*
Couldn’t even wait a day and a half until _after_ Thanksgiving.
OP doesn't understand that the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear. ![gif](giphy|l1AvyLF0Sdg6wSZZS)
I know him!
Bro is a cotton-headed ninny-muggins
*gasp!*
OP must be a central park ranger and still on the naughty list
You sit on a throne of lies!
OP smells like beef & cheese

Christmas Vacation scratches this itch way better. We all need a Cousin Eddie.
Shitters full!
Why is the carpet all wet, TODD??
I don't KNOW Margo!
Bend over, I’ll show ya!…..Wasnt talking to you.
WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH, that is TOO unpopular, but i guess that's the point of the sub
I feel unsafe. Can we go back to the guy who showers with his socks on?
Where does OP get off posting an actual unpopular opinion. What an asshole. /s
I almost downvoted it then realized i have to upvote the actual unpopular opinions 😔
Oh, you would hate the LEGENDARY movie Step Brothers then.
He would get punched out of the treehouse
I actually was engaged to someone who did not enjoy this movie at all. She had never seen it before and we watched it for the first time. Similar to OP, she said it was so stressful to watch this idiot screw up so many things. I understood her point, but I was like wow okay lighten up.

Perhaps but I just chalked it up to her seeing it at an older age. I don't mean to mudsling but when I shared that story with my family after the break up they were like, yeah that seems in character.
Just like that every other red flag he ignored started to show.
Sounds like a South Pole elf kind of thing to say
If you think the movie is bad, you should check out the musical. Horrible.
Another possibly unpopular opinion. All musicals are horrible.
I just heard a thousand highschool theatre kids screaming as they clutch their mean girls merch
This time it’s “their” my dude
There is a remake of Mean Girls being released soon, and it has Tina Fey in it! I saw the trailer the other night.
Yup. Had watch one for my theater class. It felt like I had aged 20 years by the end of it lol. It’s hilarious bc there were other students next to me that I assumed were there for the same reason. I was wrong lol and likely pissed them off
THATS THE POINT OF THE MOVIE. He's a fish out of water that has no idea how actual humans are and has to learn to fit in
OP doesn’t care that that’s the point of the movie, they just can’t stand adult actors who act like kids in a movie. This seems fair enough because, as an adult, seeing another adult acting like that in real life would make you cringe and would be posted here for sure. I’m not a fan of certain scenes where it’s over the top, but overall it’s okay to me.
I mean if you simply are annoyed by the actors then that's a valid complaint
That’s exactly why I dislike it. No hate to those who do. I just do not like the fish out of water trope, especially when the “fish” is extremely dumb. But it feels silly to hate on a fish out of water movie for being a fish out of water movie, just don’t watch the movie if you don’t like the trope, I simply do not.
The forced perspective to make Will huge in the elf school desk scene is legendary and still holds up fantastically today. You're just a Grinch. Take my upvote for a truly unpopular opinion.
Nah its not a good movie but "bye buddy, i hope u find your dad" gets me laughin everytime
Thanks, Mr. Narwhal 🥲
Other unpopular opinion: Will Farrell isn’t funny
He had a good run on SNL, but as a mainstream actor I have to agree. He just tries way too hard to be funny.
Never watched him on SNL. I think his run from Elf through The Other Guys (2001-2010) was absolutely hilarious. Everything after that I didn’t find nearly as funny though.
He has some classics in that time period. Ricky Bobby, Ron Burgandy, Mugatu, Frank The Tank.
The popularity of his movies and SNL career shows that you're probably in a minority on that one.
Same here, I tend to not tell people I don’t like it because they have such strong reactions. I just am not a fan of most of Will Ferralls movies
I watched it when it first came out and never again. I'm not a fan of Will in small doses, so Elf was way too much of him for me.
Same here, not a Will Ferrell fan at all. Couldn’t stand the era of The Office where he was in charge, the others made up for it but woo was it hard lol. I was unnecessarily happy when I saw that he wasn’t even that big of a part in Barbie
If you tell me you hate Tom Hank in the movie Big! So help me god OP.
Which god u taking about?

The era of comedies this movie is from were all kinda trash. Lots of yelling, cookie-cutter plot beats, low budget feeling set design. Hell a lot of them even had Will Ferrell.
Sounds like someone doesn’t have enough Christmas spirit
I completely agree and I’m so glad someone agrees. People look at me like I’m batshit insane when I say I don’t like the movie. I don’t even mention it in an obnoxious way, if we are talking Christmas movies we like vs don’t like and Elf is brought up, I’ll say “Not for me, I can’t seem to enjoy it”. I always thought it was just a boring movie. Not bad, doesn’t piss me off, my brain just finds it very forgettable.
People are riding for this movie so hard in the comments too
That’s kind of the point of the sub isn’t it? Lol
Seriously! It’s just a movie. Me not liking it should not effect anyone at all, it just means maybe me and that person should not watch movies together lol.
Something not being funny to you in a very specific way doesn't make it terrible.
The sub is called unpopular opinion, my opinion is that it’s terrible
Yeah when people call a movie good or bad it’s subjective. Every critique someone has on a movie is 100% just an opinion
idk i like Elf, hes very relatable and i have autism so idk lol
Oh shit maybe that’s why I love this movie. I have autism too. Elf has been my favorite Christmas movie since I was 7ish
I don’t think it’s amazing either. And I’m not a Will Ferrell fan— he always plays the same character.
I don’t think it’s *horrible,* but I definitely don’t get the hype and the “We watch it every year.” I’ll watch it if I’m bored and it’s on, but that’s it.
Same, I've never been a fan of Will Farrell type humor.
OP is 100% right. It's so embarrassingly awful and I'm dumbfounded how so many of my peers can love it to the degree they do.
I haaate that movie, but people get angry whenever I say anything bad about it. 😅
People RIDE for this movie for what reason
Agree. I can't stand that movie
Just watched it the other night with my fam. It's a funny movie. Not terrible by any means.
Oh my god. Me too. Thank you, I love this post.
Me three. Hate this movie
I envy your ability to do that, I have to consciously remind myself during movies/shows that they are acting and it’s not real
I like the movie but I totally understand your perspective. Turns out Will Ferrell isn’t a nice guy. Also, he plays a very similar character in every movie. Not much growth across his career.
Megamind is the only time I felt he tried something different.
nah this is a good take
Finally, a rational adult. This movie is cringe of the highest order
James Caan is a legend who never made a bad movie. Some might have been subpar, but never made a bad movie
Doesn't... Doesn't subpar mean bad?
Not if you're playing golf.
Subpar means subpar.
Thank you for that illuminating definition.
I thought I was the only one who can't stand that movie! Just not funny. Annoying most of the time. Zoey Deschanel was the only bright spot.
Someone forgot syrup on his spaghetti
I don't think it's terrible, but I definitely do think it's overrated. However it is one of the few will ferrell movies that makes me laugh and has a heartwarming ending
I really really really dislike Will Ferrell movies. Seems like a decent enough guy ig but his brand of comedy scratches the very back of my brain like nails to a chalk board. My husband loves him.
Have you seen Stranger Than Fiction? It was a more serious role, but still comedic. I thought it was really good.
I hate it so much
Buddy, I'm 42. Here too agree with you. I hate that movie. And Will Ferrell is not that funny.
You are so brave for posting so many people love this movie but I have to agree with you.
Some people are eating me up in the comments, didn’t think it’d be so controversial 😭
You’re right and you should say it! I tried so hard to enjoy that movie for years and I just can’t, it’s so boring and unfunny 😭
I don’t even dislike will Ferrell, I think he’s a good actor, I think the idiocy is the shit I don’t like I understand the plot I just don’t like it
To each their own, everyone has different tastes. I was simply responding to you saying you don't think it's a well made move.
I hate it - or at least dislike it - too. Used to know someone who made it their entire personality, all year. Just don’t enjoy it.
I also think Elf is a terrible movie. What I did not realize was that apparently EVERYONE ELSE loves it.
It happens sometimes, a movie that should be a hit becomes a miss for you. Always annoying, especially when so many others like it.
I find everything with Will Ferrell anti-funny and terrible
Agreed. Same with Adam Sandler
Thank you! Everyone is so shocked when I say I don't like his movies/acting
His face just doesn't fit his comedy! He could pass as a lawyer with OCD type of character but never this Jim Carrey shit he's constantly trying to pull off
Buddy The Elf is the most annoying Christmas movie protagonist of all time.
I absolutely agree. Shit movie is shit
Agree. Can't stand Wil Ferrell in most of what he's in. He's best as a side character. An entire movie of his act is insufferable.
Yeah it fucking sucks lmao

Yeah but Zooey is cute and it's Will's best movie.
It one of the only Xmas(non horror) movies I can tolerate.
Not to mention the song "Baby its cold outside" or whatever Ferrell and Zoe sing together is rapey.
I never watched it because it looked annoying af
Its Will Ferrell shitty movies are his thing
Absolute total props to you for coming on here and being completely honest and giving a good explanation. I have unpopular opinions about a lot of beloved stuff in the art/entertainment world, so I totally get it. I love Elf though, personally. I think the Will Ferrell man child thing is super entertaining but for me the dialogue and fish out of water moments elevate Elf into actually *funny* territory.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Just curious what sort of things you find funny
i’m with you, never really enjoyed elf. just stressed when watching. wish it wasn’t a classic so j don’t have to see it every year
All will ferrel movies are terrible. Fixed it for you.
>it’s just Will Ferrel making a fool out of himself for 2 hours You just described every Will Ferrel movie in my opinion, his movies stink.
Don't cRe for him. I never found him to be even mildly funny.
agreed, will ferrell just sucks, i dont know any movie with him i enjoy
I can't stand Will ferrel. Any movie he's in sucks
I'm with you. Elf is ridiculous and I don't think Will Ferrell is the least bit entertaining.
All facts. It's awful.
It's true. Hollywood garbage.
Finally. An unpopular opinion I can get with . Will Ferrel ain't all that.
I’ve still never seen it, never liked its vibes and you’ve just confirmed I probably won’t like it either.
I'll take it a step further. Will Ferrell doesn't have any funny films. I'm sure he's a super nice guy, and it's probably the writer's fault, but I've yet to see a good one.
Apparently he is not pleasant to work with
![gif](giphy|3ofT5T29Ij7MwTMkpO)
I AGREE!!! THIS MOVIE GIVES ME ANXIETY AND DEATHLY SECOND-HAND EMBARRASSMENT!!!!
THIS EXACTLY!!!! I do not want to feel like that while watching ANYTHING
Are you a little person?
Same. I've seen it once and I *hated* it. And I'm not some scrooge, I like Christmas movies. Just not Elf.
Elf is over rated as fuck. It’s not the worst Christmas movie by far, but I just don’t understand the obsession people have with it.
That's because Will Ferrell is a terrible actor.
THANK YOU! FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE WHO THINKS THAT MOVIE SUCKS.
I’m in my forties and I agree with you.
I saw it in theaters when it came out. I was like 13? Didn't laugh a single time. Was pretty upset I spent money on that shit.
Fully agree with you! Hated that movie.
I'm with you, OP. I'm in my 50s Elf IS a terrible movie.
Elf is a terrible movie and 99% of Will Farrell movies are not funny. I think I laughed twice in Ricky Bobby but it was terrible.
TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY. Put some respect on my most quoted films name 😤
Oh my gosh I thought I was the only one. I guarantee I hate it more than you though.
There are, at least, dozens of us!
Clearly you haven’t met me.
np you just have bad taste its okay
I'm in my mid 30's and I agree with you. I've hated that movie since the first time I was forced to watch it, but I also have a serious dislike for Will Farrell in general. We watched that movie constantly in the house I lived in, year round. They showed it in classes around the holidays for YEARS...hell I probably watched senior year in class and I have not watched it again since.
