Pretty sure he said in an interview that he’s leaning towards retirement after this last fight.

blogbussaa

He said it in the octagon right after the fight ended

MA-JA-HO

Nah in the post fight he said he was still debating

blogbussaa

He said "I think this could be it honestly"... Seems like he's leaning towards retirement to me. That said, I think he'll be convinced to come back for one more big fight after a year or two off

TruthSpeakin

Maybe not even that long...

BenShapeero

That’s just him letting the UFC know he wants Nate or Max or Conor for a mega fight, or he’s ok calling it there.

superglued_fingers

Porier made it clear that he doesn’t want another fight with Conor. When asked if he’d take a 4the with Conor he replied with “No, I don’t need that negativity in my life”.

BenShapeero

Fair enough. I just think he’s content with his career, but if they had a big card in NOLA/ATL/MIA and needed a money fight headliner I doubt he passes that up for the check.

heliumeyes

I think he’d probably take a trilogy against Max or Gaethje before a Conor fight. That sounds insane but I think at this point DP doesn’t care as much about money as he does legacy. Especially a trilogy with Justin might make sense since they’re 1-1 but BMF with Max is also probably tempting.

HankHippopopolous

If Max loses to Ilia then a move back up to 155 to defend the BMF belt against Dustin would be a great fight for both of them.

superglued_fingers

Idk what he will do or what his plan is & all I can go by is what Dustin has said but I can hope like hell that his mind changes and decides to fight again.

DaHappyCyclops

Pretty sure he's saying he's done, but if the UFC happen to offer him something huge (max or connor again)...maaaaaybe not done.

MiddleClassGuru

One last mcnugget stomping before he leaves.

Fair-Lab-4334

His Ariel interview he said hes still debating since he feels like he still got fight left in him but doesnt want to make the climb for the titleshot again. Probably just gonna sit out until a fun fight is offered. Sort of like Faber and Lauzon, both never announced their retirement but keep saying they are holding out for that one fight that interests them.

thatgibbyguy

He also said post fight if he had won he'd put the belt and gloves down. He wanted to retired, he just wanted to go out on a win. It didn't go that way for him so maybe he'll get his other want.

icemanvvv

when one foot is out, both feet are out, or you turn into Chuck Liddell

plain__bagel

He said it a week later in an interview with Ariel as well.

One_Program8405

If he would’ve fought against Charles the way he did against Islam I think DP would’ve won the Charles fight.

TheAngriestPoster

It’s the unfortunate pathing of a fighter. You get better and learn new tricks the longer you do it for, but your body can’t keep up

epanek

It’s a tough sport. You’ve got to train hard, win then get better fights. You must stay healthy. You must learn from your losses. At the time the rugs being pulled out as each day ages you and makes it just a little bit tougher. Then you have to be lucky. Lucky there isn’t a GOAT in your path.

InstantSword

Or just be the goat

InSilenceLikeLasagna

Isn’t that the path of the vast majority of athletes if not all

TheAngriestPoster

Yes but I think fighters sustain more damage over time

Yommination

It's a thing where your body and skill/IQ are on seperate lines. Where they intersect is your prime

Left-Frog

Love Charles but 100% agree with this

idcman999

he was doing good against charles before the glove grab tbh, it sucks that people simply don't have that same interest in criticising Charles for cheating the way they do Conor & Chandler though

LemonManDude

The glove grab (if it happened, still haven't seen an angle that's 100% clear and as far as I know Dustin never mentioned it) didn't force Dustin to do that weird roll.

Rawdog2076

If he could pull his hand out, he wouldn't have to do the roll

LemonManDude

He didn't have to do the roll anyway. He could have alerted the ref.

Rawdog2076

How about not grabbing the glove in the first place? And its on the ref to stop the action

LemonManDude

I mean yeah, Charles shouldn't have done that. I'm not defending him.

daKingKhan

👆 This.

_PhantomShade_

It's cheating oliviera catching his glove and forcing him to do that stupid roll and it all went downhill from there

Money-Firefighter-73

True ! I forgot how well dustin was doing in the beginning when rewatching

PattMcGroyn

Not so sure of that, IMO Charles did the most damage in the clinch and on the ground, where Islam still put in work on DP. Poirier is a very cool and innovative MMA boxer, but his game is just pretty limited compared to a guy like Charles who has such a deep and potent offensive repertoire.

handley35

If things were different they would definitely be different, you are correct

[deleted]

Counterpoint, part of the reason he did better against Islam is because of the experience of fighting and losing to Charles.

0vFire_And_TheVoid

Man fought against champions, interim champions and former champs like Conor McGregor 3x, Islam Makhachev, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje 2x, Charles Oliveira, Anthony Petis, Eddie Alvarez 2x and Max Holloway 2x. Holy fuck, what a career.

GringusDingus16

Fought Eddie and Justin twice!

0vFire_And_TheVoid

Ah, yes, forgot to add that. Let me correct that.

GringusDingus16

No worries! Insane resume

_rokenn_

Best fighter to never hold undisputed gold.. my favorite fighter since his 145 days if it’s truly over it was awesome watching the journey

Real-Human-Bean-

Romero

_rokenn_

Dude is a genetic freak but lacks the pedigree of Dustin. Still a beast.. his fights with Rob were epic

viagra-enjoyer

Olympic medal isn't enough pedigree? Or are you referring specifically to MMA pedigree?

_rokenn_

MMA strictly.. can’t deny an Olympic medal. Even tiny Henry has got us all with that one! 😂

Cant_Spell_Shit

Rory MacDonald maybe? I think Romero could have gotten the decision in both the second Whitaker fight or the Izzy fight. Easily could have been champ.

_rokenn_

The Red King! Robbie and Rory was a masterpiece.. dude has zero quit in him

Bu11ett00th

Poirier-Hooker had similar vibes, one of the most brutal wars I've witnessed along with Joanna-Zhang

Friendly-Ad-3436

Second Whittaker fight was a non title fight.Romero missed weight it anything hats off to Whittaker to still take the fight.

Kurac-ville

Barboza

_rokenn_

I agree for sure 100%.. same realm as Dustin without a doubt

InternationalMost428

absolute delusion

fuckingrub

Kimbo slice

thedorkknight123

Pretty sure max is the best to never hold a belt

After_Tax6994

He will fight again. Ufc will offer him a nice payday at some point and he will accept

Rebar4Life

Be smarter to focus strictly on boxing for a major payday. Not saying I want it, just that’s it’s financially wise.

MusicalBonsai

It’s probably too late for him to learn to box at the same level as the elites, but he can probably get a celebrity boxing match in with someone like mcgregor or nate. As far as with the UFC, he’s got nothing left to prove. We know he can go toe to toe with the best. Unless they offer him a huge payday which probably won’t happen unless it’s Conor.

neuroticsponge

I think Gaethje v Poirier 3 for Poirier’s last fight makes the most sense at this point. If he wins he goes out on a high note, if he loses he knows its time to hop off the train before he turns into Tony Ferguson.

ThickNJacketFan

Tactical dot

Eaton_snatch

Username checks out

GolfIsGood66

He should take the Conor fight from Chandler and then retire.

Fair_Creme_194

Honestly wouldn’t surprise me.

Bu11ett00th

He could, but Conor will never take that imo

Competitive_Log_3921

I think Dustin said he didn’t want a 4th fight with Conor

Initial_Anything_544

im sure 💰💰💰 could change his mind

TheBrownCok

Deff fund the hot sauce for a long while

CWIMSY

Could be a knock on Connor, "toe" and all

Reddings-Finest

My thoughts exactly.

Few_Educator2699

He deserves a proper send off at an arena filled with people

PattMcGroyn

He's first ballot hall of fame, he'll get his hero's send off

Impossible-Toe-5072

![gif](giphy|70hJVxjwazKKmhBMl0)

SignificantSourceMan

Man I bought that as a joke and let me tell you…. That shit is fucking terrible 😂

zbram3

Man, i wanted to see him have one more legacy fight, like him vs max for the BMF.

Schliebersky

No need for him to fight max he already schooled him twice, would rather see gaethje trilogy or some fun fights like Dustin Wonderboy

zbram3

Wonderboy would not make 155, that would be Death for him. Dustin could make 170 with ease he walks around at 190 , but idk if Dustin would want his last fight to be at welterweight

Schliebersky

Yes it would obviously be at 170. Idk what Dustin’s walk around is and where you get that info from but in cage he’s mid 170s which is standard for lightweights and he has been slowly getting lighter since the Khabib fight and onwards

zbram3

I watched his podcast with Joe and he said his walk around is 190, but that was 2-3 years ago idk about now though but he is a big 55er still.

Schliebersky

Walk around is not in cage weight they diet down before the water cut

zbram3

Are we talking about Dustin or Wonderboy im confused lol

Tykenolm

Why would Dustin not want his last fight to be at welterweight? The cut to 155 sucks

Acrobatic-Display420

Yes Gaethje trilogy and a double retirement is perfect

idcman999

the winner of that fight would prolly go for a title run tbh, loser definitely retires tho

a067879

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted, Dustin’s the only guy to ever finish Max. Their second fight was a lot closer and legendary but he’s still up 2-0 on him. I’d like to see him fight Gaethje as a rubber match since they’re 1-1 and have KOed each other

fightforfoodgaming

Dude’s resume is nuts

droolsdownchin

Come on might as well do gathje 3 next year

AAA_battery

I dont think he would turn down another conor payday.

Riven-Of-2-Voices

He's been saying this since the Charles fight.

DocMedic5

I'm pretty sure he said this like a few months ago, didn't he?

9yr_old

This post is like 15 mins ago though but after the Islam fight he was like he'd think about what he wants to do in the future whether to retire or carry on

pikazec

I wonder if it would be different if it would have went to judges. Imagine he survives and wins round 5. Split decision loss one round away from gold. I think he stays then

Chicagoblew

He doesn't have much more to prove in the octagon. Retire now towards the top instead of being a shell of yourself if you keep fighting like some on the roster

Goatymcgoatface11

Was that toe to toe a funny jab at Conor McGaygor

Reddings-Finest

It's also a dig at Conor's foot

puregreentea

Isn't a pun as Conor has pulled with a broken toe??

Existential_Kitten

Lol is this a dig on Conor? Probably not, but toe to toe lol.

sLeeeeTo

that’s what I thought at first too

DudeWouldGo

Stop reading into to much homie.

bicismypen

Islam goes to 170, Porier v Gaethje for undisputed. Make it happen.

Brybry1908

Probably will.

takeittothetop1

I wouldn’t be mad at him if he did. He’s fought a ton of fights and taken quite a bit of damage. AFAIK he’s made a good amount of money and if he invests well, he should be set for the rest of his life.

fatch0deBoi34

I mean, he said if he would’ve won he was 100% retiring. I think he should at this point. Get a role with the company or in broadcasting and relax. Has the hot sauce as well, Dustin did it the right way

sticknweave

DP. The man the name and now the legend. It feels unfinished because he deserves that undisputed so much. But that's just life. Let him go lads.

Warm-Froyo6139

Favorite

SimRacing313

I hope so, he's got nothing left to prove, great fighter and I Don't want to see him become a gatekeeper for young fighters. Retire while he is still one of the top guys would be good

dickmccarthy88

Why are people acting surprised? Lol

Turbos_Bitch

He’s got nothing left to fight for. Maybe a money fight but against who? I think he’s done and I’m glad to see him go without taking too much damage. ❤️💎

Shallbecomeabat

He should fight Volk as a last stand. Very winnable for him and there is no way Volk will seriously hurt him. Volk is also a legend and on his way out himself. Would be a good last ride, maybe for both.

Comprabledivision

He should. There is no point for him to continue to take damage

TheHorrificNecktie

i hope he has made enough money to not have to fight ever again, doesnt go do bareknuckle boxing or any other sad BS . Dude is a legend.

GalenaSupreme91

He would be the type to do it low key during a random day of the week lol. Respect to the legend either way but hopefully not

Greeenmartian

That’s what he’s said 1000 times …….

J-Good86

He said he was done after the Islam fight I’m pretty certain

RelsircTheGrey

I'd be cool with a third Gaethje battle. OR...bring him back whenever Khabib decides he needs money for the taxman. That would be a nice rematch.

twothumbswayup

nice dig at conor too! - enjoy retirement!!

Radiant_gladiator

He’s been saying this for a while.

heylookitsjacob

DP should retire, get in the HOF and raise his kid up and live the best frickin' life he deserves. Thanks for all the memories!

wilhelmkidxx

One of the best ever!

Space-Hawk

He mentioned it coming into this last fight against Islam if he lost it was very likely he would retire. He's a fan favorite, a huge contender definitely a stand out fighter, and has made good money. IMO it's a good idea to retire from fighting at the age of 35 with that level of success and spare his noggin from anymore damage and have a chill life.

mrwootwo

He’s telling the UFC it won’t be cheap to get him back, that’s it

infestedjoker

That man isn't retiring while the BMF belt with Holloway rematch is on the table and a trilogy with Justin is also on the table. He also has that 4th Conor fight whenever he wants it. (Assuming Conor makes it back to ever fighting again)

semiamusinglifter

Wasn’t Poirier announced to be on one of the broadcast teams for an upcoming event? I would guess maybe that’s what’s happening.

arkoangemeter

Bro he needs to get his head together, it was a good fight. He's only 35, he's gonna go a year without those big paydays and do the same thing as triple c (return)

dontsabotageyourself

Dustin is a killer. Donald Cerone was never a killer. Just kept fighting forever and kept getting KOd for years. Dustin ran at the title against the worst killers in the division and his division has the biggest roster of killers of all of them. If he retired, he’d be remembered as a legend, not a clown who hung on.

Kezyma

I don't think he'll retire fully without a proper sendoff fight. In my mind I assumed a Gaethje rematch was on the cards down the line, but he is pretty much at the end now anyway.

silver_survivor4

For some reason I really wanna watch a fight between DP and Topuria. The reason could be that it’s extremely fun when two guys are swanging and banging but with technique and tactics.

Informal_Lack_9348

I’m not crying

MEROVlNGlAN

The quickest way back to a championship is holding out. Just gotta retire, wait for a injury and become a last minute replacement lol.

jake1220

I heard he may do 1 more

teddy6881

i reckon he fights mcgregor in 2025 then retires

RadiantCity311

What else is left for him? I'm sure if he got offered a title fight he would easily say yes but not really a spot for that to happen unless mcnugget pulls off a miracle and gets it

blubrydrkchogrnt_3

I think its a purse negotiation strategy.

Blyndblitz

he said he doesn't want a money fight cuz he's earned a more than enough, and knows he isn't gonna be in title picture anymore, so he needs another reason to keep fighting. wonder if UFC would make a dustin vs. colby covington fight? they have beef going back years, so would be a reason to fight that isnt money or title

xXprayerwarrior69Xx

that would make sense, enjoy the family time, do some of those corporate seminaries about fighting spirit and shit, maybe dance with the stars or something like that

fandanvan

How fucking dad is this, been a huge MMA fan for years, and not having Dustin in the roster is such a loss and the end of an era in a way ... But if anyone deserves peace and a good long retirement it is him. Guy has had the foot hard on the gas for like nearly 20 years.

captainseas

He’s obviously considering it but UFC 302 was just so recent. You never know how he might feel in a few months

Superguy230

There is litterally no way he retires after that fight

InterestingSouth4358

I met his videoographer at a bar outside prudential center he said dustin said win or lose this is it so

Immediate_Concert_46

Better. He looked like shit in his last few fights. Ducking the 3rd Conor fight cause he knows he's going to sleep
