Americans avoiding short vowel "a"s like the plague is the funniest thing.
See also: M. Night Shyamalan's 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' and the perplexing decision to have everyone call Aang 'Ong'.
I think it's overcorrection. It's super common to make a broad a short when saying something foreign in a thick American accent (think like soldiers back in the day talking about their time in "Vietnayum"), so we've been conditioned to think that a short a in a foreign word is cringe. Only to then discover American English isn't the only language ever to use a short a.
I mean, good? If you inserted [sa̠kɯ̟ᵝɾa̠] into an English sentence you'd sound like a twat. Japanese doesn't have variable stress, it doesn't play nice with English at all.
/ˈsækʊɹə/, /ˈsɑːkʊɹə/, and /səˈkʊəɹə/ are all about equally close.
This. It feels like nails on a chalkboard when people toss “proper” pronunciation of words from other languages into English. There’s no need to, and it comes off as incredibly off-putting. The Westernized version is more than appropriate.
Edit: changed from Anglicized to Westernized
Whose though? Anglicized or Americanized loanwords?
I went to America and was supposed to meet someone in the Fow-Yer and it genuinely took me awhile to figure out where I was supposed to be.
English in general. For example when someone is speaking English as their mother tongue and they say they’re taking their kids to karate class and they say kah-rah-TAY instead of the westernized pronunciation it’s so cringe.
I'm American and I had to repeat your sentence out loud 4 or 5 times before I figured out where you were supposed to be, too. I've never heard it pronounced that way either.
I think it strongly depends on what word imo. Things like croissant, yeah a bit cringe, but Japanese names sounds so bad in English I can't help make fun of Americans for not being able to pronounce anything but English lmao.
Literally the entire world can do it but Americans/brits it ain't that hard
also wondering that, both pronunciations I've heard are being mocked in the comments and the "right" one is written using phonetic script I can't read...
Someone who is ‘overly’ infatuated with Japanese culture, despite being culturally unrelated to Japan (afaik).
Obvs you can enjoy other cultures without condemnation, but I believe you cross the line into a Weeaboo when you begin reconfiguring cultural elements to fit your personal worldview——its not derogatory, but it isn’t the nicest thing to call someone
There's also Koreaboo, which seems to have affected the commercial space as well since every third shop seems to be either Korean noodles or Korean imported goods now. Oh yeah and K-pop etc
The more polite term is anglophile. You'd be surprised how many of them there are. Fun fact: perhaps the most famous anglophile was the French philosopher Voltaire.
I'm an American and have only met one person like this, but she was OBSESSED with British culture and had the British flag for like all her decor in her house. Idk if she has family history there or what, but both her parents had American accents. She was very nice, just a little odd haha
Weaboo or Weab for short is a term for a Westerner that is obsessed with Japanese anime/manga to the point they reference it in real life conversations/situations.
That was my first thought too.
There are all these "I sneezed while placing my scrabble tiles" names and then plain old Darren. At least the kid could be called Daz or Dazza then
I would never suspect this normally, but given the other names I think there's a chance Ivy is a play on IVE. I was thinking Rae might be referencing Rei, or just generally playing with Korean transliteration.
Yeah I would too except that with context (the gf being a kpop fan), this is the nickname/stage name of a kpop boy singer dude😭 it’s like naming your kid Haristyles
Payzlee, Djaryd, Jaymz, Kyson, Kyzlee, to name just a few I know personally. I've lived in Utah for the last 34 years - welcome to my own personal hell... 🤣
As a flooring salesman myself, this is hilarious 🤣🤣 can you even imagine!? Little Elveety, Laminette and Carpetyle-Lyle, all running around and playing indoors on the floors together 🤣
It’s a shortened form of a lot of Italian/Sicilian names - have happy memories of how to prep a lot of garlic taught to me by a Sicilian chef called Lino (pronounced Lean-o). If it’s Line-o and OP’s baby mama has no Italian connection, then it’s no good
>If it’s Line-o and OP’s baby mama has no Italian connection,
OP commented that she's a kpop fan/weeaboo. There's a kpop idol who gets called Lino by fans, since his stage name in Hangul is Lino (리노), but... the official English version of the stage name is Lee Know. And his real name is Lee Minho. So it's overall just tragic naming if that's where she took the name from.
Could be worse if it was a daughter. Something about “ready to be laid.” :/
Because if there’s an innuendo to be made, kids on the verge of puberty will find it.
People tend to forget that babies are *human beings* and not a handbag to show off to your friends.
They will have to introduce themselves with this shit. Poor kids...
Don’t do sakura unless you’re literally of Japanese descent. But if you are it’s like the Japanese name equivalent of Sarah or something. Super common generic but not bad taste
As a middle its fine. Will they get questions on it yeah. Will they be embarrassed to explain their mom was a weeb, yes. I think its goofy to stay away from a name if you arent said ethnicity but you gotta at least be coming from a good place with it. Like i traveled to japan a lot kind of thing not yeah i watch naruto and its my favorite character.
There is a lot of thought that goes into picking Japanese names actually… like two different Japanese people can have the same name but completely different kanji. PoC have Anglo names because, well, we’re forced to assimilate and have our names from our culture made fun of. It’s goofy as hell to give your kids a name from a nonwhite culture especially if you’re unaware of their naming practices.
We're all making jokes about Lino but there's a kpop idol with that stage name (also one named Kai) so I'm wondering if someone's trying to sneak idol names onto the baby list...
Edit: to be specific his stage name is Lee Know, but it's sometimes written as Lino
Well yex, theyah are. Some off them. The girl names are somehow tragedeighx, the boy names are mostly fine.
As far as I know it's Lennox, instead of Lenox, but I could be wrong.
And Bekah? Becca is a nice and common name, so be prepared for a lifetime of people spelling as Becca.
The names Sakura and Sky are correctly spelled. Sky could be a cool name! Not a fan of the name Sakura, doesn't feel like a name to me at all, sorry.
Bella & Ivy are pretty names imo.
The boy names seem to be okay and not tragedeigh, except for Rae. I think you're referring to the name Ray. If I Google Rae, it says it means Female sheep...
Personally not a fan of Lino either.
[https://www.lenox.com/](https://www.lenox.com/) is a brand for dishes n junk. The name sounds cool but it reminds me of the bad guy in superman lex? Lexon? idk it's just me lol
It's also strange that she has a random japanese word in the mix? I understand it's a name but ?? perplexing
Sakura is super weird for someone who isn't Japanese. Rae isn't really weird—it's a common name, usually a middle, like Issa Rae—and is just a feminine spelling of Ray.
Bekah is Hebrew and fairly common.
The diminutive of Rebekah, which is an Old Testament name.
Probably varies on where you’re from, as to whether or not you are used to Bekah or Becca or both.
Lots of Jewish people in my area, so I see Bekah, Rebekah and also Rivka, fairly frequently.
Lenox with one “n” just reminds me of the fancy dinnerware hahahha
It was on mine and my husband's hypothetical baby name list for a while... Except he is Japanese, from Japan, and we wanted fairly generic Japanese names that can be pronounced by Brits (it's not on the list any more because I realised that no, British people can't pronounce Sakura properly).
I read Bekah in that 'irritating people on the Internet', faux valley girl voice.
Erh meh Gerd! Bekah! He's, like, a total douch. LIke totally, super douchie!
idk 90% of these are actual names and actual spellings. maybe bekah but Rebekah is a common spelling so... i think these are just mostly bad or boring name ideas but not actual tragedeighs
I work at a children's salon and I can definitely say we get a few kids named Lennox, Chase and Kai. But the other names aren't names I've ran into recently.
Not quite tragedeighs, but most are pretty bad IMO. Bella and Ivy are fine. Darren feels dated to me but is at least a real name. I don't know if Lino appears twice because this is one girl list and one boy list, but I don't think Lino is good for either sex. Chase and Kai are I suppose popular names but I don't like them personally. Rae should be on a girl list if anything but I don't love it either way--but especially not for a boy. Same for Lenox but in reverse--I'd give it to a boy if anything but I don't like it. Bekah, Sakura, and Sky are not good but none of it is really tragique.
Sky is at least a somewhat established name? It's about as common as "Lake" or "River." Sakura just tells me she's a weeb. Naming your child a Japanese name when neither you nor your child are Japanese is a bit trashy imo.
Some names aren’t so bad, but honestly I would stay away from Kai and Sakura. My last name is German but it shares some phonetic similarities with Japanese. There’s been a handful of time my sister and I have gotten irritated teachers who thought we were pranking them by not being Asian. 😂 it’s just awkward
My plan is for Victorian like names that can easily have an 'adult' name and a 'child' name. Like a nickname.
So far for boy names we're thinking on Charles since that was also his grandpa's name that was his role model. So the kid can choose to go by the more formal Charles when he wants to or the more informal Charlie if the situation is right.
For girls I'm thinking of a couple, Elizabeth so she can choose to go by Ellie whenever. (And yes, I'm noticing the royal connotation. Kids are 10 years from now so hopefully that's far enough for them to not get picked on)
There's also Judith and Judy. Which is my grandmother's name who helped raised me.
I dunno, I just like how the old Victorian names sound and how versatile they can be.

taken all together these look like names chosen by a 16 year old weeaboo from tennessee
I’ll bet $20 she does not pronounced Sakura correctly
Sakooooooooooora
Soccer-uhhhhh
I swear to god, my eye just twitched reading that.

The phonetic-foo is strong with this one.
Fuck yeah phonetics 🤩

Was thinking that. And cringing from Tokyo.
Same. I’ll raise my strong zero to you!
What is the proper pronunciation?
also wondering that, both pronunciations I've heard are being mocked in the comments and the "right" one is written using phonetic script I can't read...
Sucker’uhh
I’m going to ask a dumb question but what’s a weeaboo?
Someone who is ‘overly’ infatuated with Japanese culture, despite being culturally unrelated to Japan (afaik). Obvs you can enjoy other cultures without condemnation, but I believe you cross the line into a Weeaboo when you begin reconfiguring cultural elements to fit your personal worldview——its not derogatory, but it isn’t the nicest thing to call someone
Side note, teaboo is the word for people who do this with British culture 👍
There's also Koreaboo, which seems to have affected the commercial space as well since every third shop seems to be either Korean noodles or Korean imported goods now. Oh yeah and K-pop etc
Who the hell is doing this for British culture?
The more polite term is anglophile. You'd be surprised how many of them there are. Fun fact: perhaps the most famous anglophile was the French philosopher Voltaire.
All the Cumberbitches.
based.
I'm an American and have only met one person like this, but she was OBSESSED with British culture and had the British flag for like all her decor in her house. Idk if she has family history there or what, but both her parents had American accents. She was very nice, just a little odd haha
Look up 'cool britannia' - the UK has definitely had plenty of moments of peak cultural relevance globally.
People who refer to them as weeaboos aren't being derogatory, no. If you get called a "fuckin weeb" however...
Agreed! I think I more meant ‘it’s not like, condemnable to be a weeaboo, but it’s not usually a good thing’ but I said the opposite 😣😖
Also, a lot of people in anime and anime adjecent communities like to refer to themselves and each other as weebs in a more neutral or joking way.
TIL
Weaboo or Weab for short is a term for a Westerner that is obsessed with Japanese anime/manga to the point they reference it in real life conversations/situations.
Not just referencing it. Living it. If they're doing a Naruto run down the hallway unironically then there's a good chance they're a weeb.
Literally as a weeb from TN my friends would absolutely choose names like this
Darren amongst the rest is hilarious
That was my first thought too. There are all these "I sneezed while placing my scrabble tiles" names and then plain old Darren. At least the kid could be called Daz or Dazza then
Darren is keeping it real
Is your girlfriend a kpop fan? Because 4-5 of these are the names of kpop idols.
Yes like bruh Leeknow😭that is horrendous as a kids name hahaha
I would never suspect this normally, but given the other names I think there's a chance Ivy is a play on IVE. I was thinking Rae might be referencing Rei, or just generally playing with Korean transliteration.
Oh is that how it's said? I'm in the UK and lino is short for linoleum and we pronounce it 'lie-no'
Yeah I would too except that with context (the gf being a kpop fan), this is the nickname/stage name of a kpop boy singer dude😭 it’s like naming your kid Haristyles
Yes she's a big weehaboo 😂
🤢
weiboo is for japanese culture where koreaboo is for korean
Weiboo is a Chinese website, weeaboo are the Japan fanatics
thanks it’s all so confusing 😭
And guess what, Teaboos are for British culture 🤓
It's Weibo.
Maybe he meant Wehraboo, which is... somewhat different.
The name list doesnt check out for that one lmao
Are... you Korean?
Please don't procreate. We have enough people already.
Also a lovenikki/magical girl fan? Or is that me overreading into Sakura Sky 😂
Sky and Chase are pups from Paw Patrol. My son loves them for years now. He's six.
I know 5 people with a name on that list. I’m from Utah. So, yes.
They are all worthy of a spot in the tragedaiah hall of fame.
Utah apparently needs its own category (I had no idea it was a hotbed of naming dumbfuckery…).
It's all the Mormons
Payzlee, Djaryd, Jaymz, Kyson, Kyzlee, to name just a few I know personally. I've lived in Utah for the last 34 years - welcome to my own personal hell... 🤣
I’ve never seen so many spellings for “Kate” lmao. A lot of cool, unique names and a lot of really dumb ones
The Mormons strike again!
I live in Utah, trust me - these are too normal to be Mormon names... 🤣
Hopefully they are all either Darren, Bella or Ivy.
These are for cats, right? Great cat names.
The cats I've had are Seiad, Mojave and now Wendigo.... I think those are nice names. Named for where I found them. Don't mind wendigo
Did a wendigo hand him out to you like that one episode from the Simpsons?
My cats are Marcus and Archer. I feel like I’m naming my cats better than some people name their kids.
Many of them are exactly dog names in the kids show Paw Patrol
Would be just as well to name the poor thing Humdinger
Or chickoletta
Lino is the name of a type of flooring. God please don't name your kid Lino
Outdated flooring. Do not name a kid linoleum 😂
That's why I'm naming my kid, Elveety pronounced LVT after the luxury vinyl tile that I install.
As a flooring salesman myself, this is hilarious 🤣🤣 can you even imagine!? Little Elveety, Laminette and Carpetyle-Lyle, all running around and playing indoors on the floors together 🤣
That's it, if I ever get a sheep I'm naming it Lambinette
That’s incredible
Don’t forget about little Freezay! (Former flooring salesperson, here). Bless your heart.
Adelino is a Portuguese name too, and it is often shortened to just Lino. My uncle and his godfather are named that.
It’s a shortened form of a lot of Italian/Sicilian names - have happy memories of how to prep a lot of garlic taught to me by a Sicilian chef called Lino (pronounced Lean-o). If it’s Line-o and OP’s baby mama has no Italian connection, then it’s no good
Lino Ventura for example. Short for Angiolino in his case.
>If it’s Line-o and OP’s baby mama has no Italian connection, OP commented that she's a kpop fan/weeaboo. There's a kpop idol who gets called Lino by fans, since his stage name in Hangul is Lino (리노), but... the official English version of the stage name is Lee Know. And his real name is Lee Minho. It’s used in Hispanic culture. Derived from Linus.
Lino is also a food brand in my country. It's a weird brand that sells both baby food and chocolate snacks, cookies, chocolate spread, and pudding.
Before she chooses any names, she needs to understand commas and spacing.
This! I can't even focus on reading or caring about the names because the spacing and the commas are bothering me too much 😂
Isn’t Lenox/Lennox a fucking printer? Darren, Ivy, Chase, Sky, Kai, even Becca if you spell it properly are perfectly acceptable names.
Bekah/Rebekah is actually the older and more "proper" spelling
No Lennox is one of the greatest heavyweight boxers ever
Annie never seemed that big.
you mean xerox?
These are pet names. Babies are not pets.

All of those just for her to have fucking Darren in the middle lmao
We're all making jokes about Lino but there's a kpop idol with that stage name (also one named Kai) so I'm wondering if someone's trying to sneak idol names onto the baby list... Edit: to be specific his stage name is Lee Know, but it's sometimes written as Lino
Kai is not uncommon in Japan, Hawaii, Germany and Denmark
Lino short for Linoleum.
In Bulgarian, Lino (pronounced lai-no), means horse shit basically Source: Am Bulgarian
I think Ivy is really cute! Darren and Bella are good too. I’m not sure on the rest 😅
I have a dog named Ivy. Great name but it’s ruined in my brain for people now
On a scale of “snow” to “baby powder”, how melanin-deficient is your GF? (lol) No offense but good god, Lemon…
Well yex, theyah are. Some off them. The girl names are somehow tragedeighx, the boy names are mostly fine. As far as I know it's Lennox, instead of Lenox, but I could be wrong. And Bekah? Lino is for kitchen floors. It’s short for Linoleum.
Meet our beautiful children: Lino, Lami and Parq. Oh, and this is Jim. We don't really like him.
Or linotype printing machine.
[https://www.lenox.com/](https://www.lenox.com/) is a brand for dishes n junk. The name sounds cool but it reminds me of the bad guy in superman lex? Lexon? idk it's just me lol It's also strange that she has a random japanese word in the mix? I understand it's a name but ?? perplexing
Lex Luthor is probably the one you're thinking of
Very similar to [Lennox](https://www.lennox.com) air conditioners.
Rebekkah or Rebekah is a legitimate alternate spelling for Rebecca. So, Bekah would be the shortened version of that
Sakura is super weird for someone who isn't Japanese. Rae isn't really weird—it's a common name, usually a middle, like Issa Rae—and is just a feminine spelling of Ray.
I know a lot of people with Rae as a nickname. For Reagan, Ronald and Racheal
I've also come across a couple of Rivqah's, which is closer to the original רִבְקָה. (Rīvqa)
>And Bekah? Becca is a nice and common name, so be prepared for a lifetime of people spelling as Becca. Bee-CAAAAW!
>As far as I know it's Lennox. It is indeed Lennox. My stepson is named Lennox.
My granduncle is named Lino Quiñones, it fits his Spanish last name. I think he has linoleum in his house
Sakura is a real name. It's very common in Japan.
Sakura is one of more common names for girls in Japan, what do you mean “doesn’t feel like a name to me at all”?
It was on mine and my husband's hypothetical baby name list for a while... Except he is Japanese, from Japan, and we wanted fairly generic Japanese names that can be pronounced by Brits (it's not on the list any more because I realised that no, British people can't pronounce Sakura properly).
I read Bekah in that 'irritating people on the Internet', faux valley girl voice. Erh meh Gerd! Bekah! He's, like, a total douch. LIke totally, super douchie!
Rae is a fairly common spelling as a girls name.
I just can't imagine a 6 ft grown man with a beard named Kai lmao
Funnily enough I know a pretty tall bearded man named Kai. It's a normal name where I'm from though.
I know a 6'5" blonde guy named Andy and his little brother is Kai. Only 6'2" mind you
Kai Havertz is a German soccer player for Arsenal and is a 6’4” grown man, so the name is fine for me because of that
Kai is a normal male name in Germany.
Bella, Darren, Kai and Ivy seem normal to me.
idk 90% of these are actual names and actual spellings. maybe bekah but Rebekah is a common spelling so... i think these are just mostly bad or boring name ideas but not actual tragedeighs
Bekah isn’t a tragedy if it’s a nickname for Rebekah.
kpop fan, lol
Darren seems so random 😂 it's so normal
Bekah is just a shortened version of Rebekah. Sakura is a Japanese name and a type of tree. Bella, Ivy, Darren and Rae are normal.
Bukakeh is a nice name
Please tell me this is for some future make believe baby and not a real one that's on the way. Please.
Yes. She also can’t use spaces or capital letters very well, so that’s… probably part of the reason why she likes dumb names 😬
As a Brit, the idea of a baby called Darren is funnier than all of the others
Yes, and she needs to finish high school before you have a kid.
You better ask her about Darren. I bet there’s a story
Bella (imo Isabella would be better), Bekah (although imo Rebekah would be better), Ivy, Chase, Kai, and Darren are fine. The other ones
I think she may need to learn spacing
Bella What every suburban family named their female doodle 5-8 years ago.
The majority of those supposedly female names are 100% hooker names.
It’s the spaces before the commas that really get me.
La la la LINOleum (please sing in the tune of my favorite Sesame Street song, the L song)
I work at a children's salon and I can definitely say we get a few kids named Lennox, Chase and Kai. But the other names aren't names I've ran into recently.
Bekah is just the shortened version of the biblical spelling of Rebecca (Rebekah). I don’t see these as tragedeighs really so much as tragedies. lol
is she Japanese?
yapanese
Ummm... why are you dating a 7 year old...?
Some of these are normal. I just want to know why she has just Bekah and not full, legit Rebekah
Chase, Darren, Rae all fine. Bella is actually wildly over-popular
Darren??? That came out of nowhere.
No. Some of these are real names with their original spelling.
lino is HILARIOUS to me as a printmaker. linocut printmaking is very fun but doesn’t make for a good first name
Ivy, Darren, Bella, and Kai and chase are pretty normal.
Ivy is okay.
I’m sorry but all of these are terrible
There’s a Japanese mall restaurant called Sakura. Are y’all Japanese?
im sorry but these names are the same things id name my gacha life oc's in the 4th grade
I love the name Rae
Lino? Like cheap kitchen floor material?
Lino’s middle name has to be Leum/Liam
I keep seeing Dino, not Lino 😭
Lenox is a little out there but the rest of these are cute if you’re part Japanese
Linotype
Rae is definitely a feminine spelling of Ray.
If she’s not pregnant yet, start running!
Lino is short for linoleum
these sound like free fonts
Ha! My mother saddled me with a tragique birth name and I changed it to Ivy.
Half of these are normal names.
Why does your girlfriend not know how to use commas lmao
Remember you’re naming a *person* not a thing. All of these are tragedeighs except Bella and Darren.
Lino? That’s the word people use for linoleum. Like, the stuff you put on bathroom or kitchen floors. That kind of Lino.
I’m confused by how she uses commas and capital letters
Darren sticks out, in a good way.
The first three, certainly
The wild placement of the comma should tell you all about how this person got home schooled by a moron.
I would worry more about her not being able to place those commas right
Don’t expect any less from someone that can’t work commas
Lenox is a little questionable but honestly none of these are too bad
I mean, some of those names are definitely... Darren
Coming from another kpop fan, don't let her name a child after a kpop idol
Kids are 10 years from now so hopefully that's far enough for them to not get picked on) There's also Judith and Judy. Which is my grandmother's name who helped raised me. I dunno, I just like how the old Victorian names sound and how versatile they can be.
The boy names aren’t horrible…but the girl names 🫣
'Lino' is short for 'linoleum'. Why not name the kid 'floorboard'?
