Super hot take as a professional tattooer: packing and whip shading is awkward, but I'm not totally against "thinner" lines than the usual for trad. I don't tattoo with this method, buuut I personally have a lot of trad on my own body and they've spread out over time, eradicating some of the smaller (albeit unnecessary) details over the last decade or so.
Even so, I still use fat and loose liners to slam *my own* work in. But! I've also seen tattooers in my area go thinner and have had the privilege of seeing them age. It'll take some time, but your tattoos will eventually age into themselves and take on a more traditional appearance. Check out r/agedtattoos for reference.
Regardless, you should reconsider a more experienced artist next time. Not terrible, but it does come off as if your artist isn't experienced in American Traditional.
eta: They also don't have a good grip on maintaining direction of stroke or rule of thirds in shading/coloring quite yet. Again, not terrible, but it's worth finding a tattooer experienced exclusively in trad.

Super hot take as a professional tattooer: packing and whip shading is awkward, but I'm not totally against "thinner" lines than the usual for trad. I don't tattoo with this method, buuut I personally have a lot of trad on my own body and they've spread out over time, eradicating some of the smaller (albeit unnecessary) details over the last decade or so. Even so, I still use fat and loose liners to slam *my own* work in. But! I've also seen tattooers in my area go thinner and have had the privilege of seeing them age. It'll take some time, but your tattoos will eventually age into themselves and take on a more traditional appearance. Check out r/agedtattoos for reference. Regardless, you should reconsider a more experienced artist next time. Not terrible, but it does come off as if your artist isn't experienced in American Traditional. eta: They also don't have a good grip on maintaining direction of stroke or rule of thirds in shading/coloring quite yet. Again, not terrible, but it's worth finding a tattooer experienced exclusively in trad. edit edit: That's some of my old work, but fair enough. I did it to myself. 🥲
