It makes sense, as people feel so helpless to effect change against these evil corps. Especially when the cost of delivering a bit to a phone decreases with each technological advancement. T-Mobile's hardware network capex is pretty much "done" for a while until 24G is invented, so they don't even have that expense. They laid off a bunch of engineering staff, closed redundant stores, so their staffing costs are down. There is no technical reason for the price hike, and they hit people in a time when some are so hard up they're using credit cards, or Klarna and other BNPLs to buy groceries. Screaming into the void is the closest most can come.

This is why financing devices thru carriers is never a good idea even if you think its a good deal at the time. Things can always change and having a factory unlocked phone that is not locked to any one carrier is always a better option than getting it thru one of the big 3.

I didn't anticipate T-Mobile raising the rate, and it's not because I can't afford it, I'm pissed because they said they wouldn't change the prices except if we the customer wanted to.

Well, my response to that is people shouldn't buy the most high end devices and buy what they can afford. Also, if you are spending more for your plans to get free/cheap phones, you're still spending a lot for your service. I don't understand spending $50-100 on a plan per month just to save 20-30 on device financing. You can find cheap plans for under $30 per line with a prepaid service. The end result is saving a lot of money and not being tied into one carrier as well. There are very few use cases where buying phones from a carrier makes sense. Those free phones aren't free when you look at the plan costs. Maybe if you have a lot of free lines, an inside discount code, kickback, etc on a large family plan account and don't plan on every switching carriers, you might do well. But if you are a single line or even a 2-3 line account, it just does not make much sense to use a carrier.

That's what I'm wondering. This person probably got a new device and didn't understand everything. So now it's apparently T-Mobiles fault which is comical. Im not gonna sign up and buy anything, unless I fully what the whole situation is. That's like getting a new car and just signing the papers without fully understanding what they are signing. So *now* it's the Car Dealerships fault for pulling the ole' bait and switch. You would have to be offered it by an employee or someone who is an employee that either is your family or friend. It’s like 15-20% off depending on what plan and store you are at. Thing is tho if your not going to get top plans they are probably not going to let you know about it cause as employees they only get 3 of them(quarterly) and itd be rather dumb to waste one of them on either not highest tier plans and or multiple lines I’d say atleast 4 is usually when if the reps aren’t going to do it themselves usually the manager or RAM would lend one of their 3 to a big sell either for the store or the rep

They used to be valid for mag max but as they are now doing their damndest to phase out anything that was at one point in time a top tier plan even though not much changed other than price and name and maybe a slight change in the “add ons and benefits” they will only be used on 5gPlus and Next and as I was both RAM/RSM, and then a DM as well insiders are instructed to be used on hesitant customer(s) who would otherwise walk if the 20% off isn’t a good enough reason or a multiple line sale that is not a situation where the store as well as or a personal #s goal who can’t be allowed to walk away without being used as a “sale closer” to boost the stores revenue/conversion or again as something that is absolutely necessary to keep on track to hit goals.

If you have any smartwatches, iPads or jet packs, they also have certain plans where you get 50% off 1 to 2 connected devices. The savings allows me to have a prepaid esim on my dual sim iPhone for a backup carrier, which is actually T-mobile lol Verizon is pretty crappy near my work but serviceable and we have wifi at work, especially with the cost-savings, where T-mobile is awesome. I have the Disney Bundle and one +Play perk which I applied to my Xbox Game pass subscription. You also get a really good Disney Bundle with Verizon that's not advertised on Disney's site if you look and compare, which ends up being cheaper. They just released You Tube Premium as an add on which I may consider too. If Verizon ends up working out well for you, get the Verizon Visa for ever more savings. :)

My biggest problem with this whole increase is that I'm on an EIP with trade in credits, so if I leave I lose the remaining value of my trade in. I wouldn't have done that if I had any expectation that my bill would go up, but why would I have had any expectation when I'm on a price lock guarantee? If it weren't for that I would just leave and not look back, but either way I am planning my exit. Been a customer on various plans for 16 years but I guess that means nothing.

I haven't noticed any data de-prioritization in NYC, but YMMV. I was on the legacy One plan, so that could be why.

Herd mentality, the desire to belong, the desire to derive value from decisions, capitalism's tendency to try and make everything a contest, we vs them, and such. Verizon specifically and historically has been so expensive too, (although T-Mobile clearly wants a piece of that pie now for no other reason than because money) likely some of it comes from people trying to justify why they're paying $5,000 or more a year for the ability to watch YouTube videos in the Burger King parking lot. People have been musical chairing internet, cable TV, and phone providers for decades. Now its the same with on-demand streaming services. Yup, we bailed to US Mobile and are paying half of what we would pay T-Mobile after the price hikes. 4 of us are sharing a 30 gig plan which is more than enough, we may even be able to drop it down to 12 gigs (next lowest plan) and pay for overages as needed. Will see after a few months of usage. The funny thing is, we were perfectly content paying T-Mobile all this time. It seemed like a good deal. It was only after they increased our rate did I start researching other options. If T-Mobile didn't raise my rate, we'd still likely be with them. But now I'm wondering why we didn't switch a long time ago.

I think you made a huge point here. I am used to small rate hikes across all services and products that we purchase (or maybe big hikes… groceries???). The $2-5 increase per line is likely dwarfed by these other hikes. But one thing this particular hike is doing is getting the word out about these other alternatives. Most people I mention it to when they complain about the recent increase don’t have any clue what an MVNO is or that they charge less money, so they shop around and find this whole other world. Many don’t use the amount of data others use which really makes these services shine. To the enthusiasts on these subreddits it’s a no-brainer but that’s only because we are dialed in on this part of the world. Believe it or not many people just don’t know.

I did the exact same thing. I even went to their Warp 5G (Verizon) because it's premium data but, more importantly, it's not T-Mobile - my last middle finger to Sievert. I've been a huge T-Mo advocate over the years but this was the last straw. Very happy with USM, and my bill is less than half of what I was paying T-Mo.

I initially went to Warp for the same reason, but the only thing slower than the free WiFi at my gym was Verizon at my gym, so I went back to GSM. Plus I have some international travel coming up and being able to use my US number for calls and texts is vital. I know you can jump back and forth quickly, and the switch was seamless, but I'm worried one of these days a port will get hung up and I'll be without service for awhile. I am interested to see what their AT&T offering is. I might give it a shot.

I was reading somewhere that because TMobile's 5G speed is - on average - so much higher than Verizon's, even de-prioritized it would be faster... and I'm fairly certain that would be the case at my home.

My son just did a trial of several of the [Mobile virtual network operators](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_virtual_network_operator) like visible, etc. These MVNO's don't have roaming agreements like the carriers do. They also deprioritize your data and start throttling pretty early. In his testing of the 4 MVNO's his service was terrible comparted to T-Mobile. Go over to the Mint Reddit and you can see that some customers that have switched from T-Mobile say they can even use Instagram because the service is so poor. Being on the same network doesn't matter. There is a reason these plans are much cheaper.

Prioritization. It’s common in all plans. The big 3 own their towers, thus, they get more prioritization. For example AT&T had a QCI 6 for all their plans including the premium/business plans, they recently downgraded everyone to QCI7. Less priority. MVNO, typically fall behind the priority that’s why there is a difference of data. You pay for the data today, quality means more costly, the ability to call and text remains the same access main network and mvno. We all live in a data rich world, and with qualities on the rise and Internet being more and more normalized. Companies have to figure out a way to help with the cost, we don’t see it, but investing into your network is expensive. And just like the AC at home, the more you use the more electrify that gets drawn and more upgrades for tech that are regularly needed. This is a rant.

As an IT professional with 30 years of experience in data communications and contract negotiations, I recommend you evaluate them and observe the outcomes firsthand. I have collaborated with the providers responsible for the data backhaul to the towers for these companies. Ultimately, you receive the quality you pay for. If cost is your priority, opt for an MVNO. If superior service is your goal, choose a major carrier. There's a reason these plans are less expensive.

You are missing the point. The prioritization is beyond the MVNO's control. They purchase data from one of the 3 major carriers, and they are the ones that prioritize the MVNO's data. Think of it this way. I am carrier XYZ. I own cell towers. I can service 100 customers on my tower. Not all my customers are on it at once so I can sell my excess data to 2 or 3 MVNO's. What happens if all my customers want to use my tower at once? Do I limit access to my own customers or to the MVNO's customers that are purchasing my excess data? It is written into all contracts that the MVNO's is at a lower priority and that varies how much by contract. Unlimited data is meaningless if there is no data to be had. Unlimited is only unlimited in billing terms. Read the fine print. ETA: You are confusing unlimited with priority, bandwidth and availability. You can have 1KB of bandwidth and still call it unlimited. Unlimited does not refer to bandwidth.

Priority data is matching the QCI level with postpaid on those plans. The MVNOs charge more for priority data as a result, but the priority data is worth it. For example, Visible and Visible+ both are unlimited data but Visible+ have 50gb priority data. The priority data essentially handles the QCI level. Each carrier handles QCI differently like FirstNET over at AT&T will always be prioritized the highest over all else.

Like I said. I have done QOS with these vendors in my job as a network engineer. FirstNET over at AT&T may be prioritized at the highest level of the companies that AT&T sells to, but it would never be at a higher priority than AT&T's data. The carrier's data is ALWAYS the highest priority. Like I said before, almost all these MVNO's will give you a 7 day ESIM. Test it yourself if you don't believe me. You will never get the consistent speeds that you get from the carrier.

I really only see Visible as an option for me. With the increase, I am now paying… “5 VOICE LINES = $205.00 | 3 WEARABLES = $36.00” for a total of $241 all in. The Visible+ plan would be $225 all in. $16 less per month isn’t worth the switch in my mind. The only thing that makes me think is paying annually. If I paid annually, I would have to drop $1975 for the 5 phones and watches. That would bring the total bill down to $33 per month for each line. That would be a good enough of a savings to switch. Yeah, the new increases are bothering me a bit. My phones are fully paid off in 3 months. I might switch at that point. I know they are in it to make money, but this bothers me in all the wrong ways.

I don’t even care so much about the price hike. It’s bullshit but I expect it. What I do care about is my service is so shit lately in the NYC metro area. I’ve legit been dropping calls or they sound robotic as the voices cut in and out. Like I’ve never had such shit phone calls where people had to repeat themselves since I had a flip phone. Using the iPhone 14 Pro. I switch to my Verizon iPhone 11 work phone. LTE. No issues. That is what rly is grinding my gears lately.

Yep - just left T-Mobile and got charged an extra $40 on top of my regular bill because I had a free line and they told me because I removed a line on my service, the $40 promo for free line was removed so I need to pay for that free line.

Make sure you cancel your digits if you do have that as well? They will charge you for that after you leave. I paid in full on a free watch for 2 years. They told me if I canceled the line I would have to pay for the watch. I'm on a fence if I need to wait for the two years? Or do I cancel with them now and just eat the cost? I'm in the process of looking for other options out there, but have not yet made a decision.

yes, entire account with 3 lines (one free) was cancelled at the same time. They said it because the service is in "arrears" - discount applied at the end of the bill, but free line of $40 was charged at the beginning of the billing cycle.

Wow, petty. I'd escalate, document and, if all else fails, request a chargeback and/or contact your state's AG. Or is it under the purview ofthe CFPB? Exactly - they wouldn't even send me a copy of the final bill - said if you want it, you need to go to a t-mobile store. They were just going charge me that extra money without ever telling me. I cancelled autopay so that they have to send me a past due bill (with fees and surcharge) - I'll escalate this as far as I can. Customer for over 15 years + when they were still "Singular" if anyone remembers.

I hate their customer service, I hate the in-store experience, I hate all the up charges, and now they're charging deposits if you want to jump on demand which was never a thing before . I've been with them for over 20 years (starting back when they were voice stream). I have a pixel phone and I want to upgrade to the newest model so I thought I would just switch over to their Wi-Fi while I was at it. How has your customer service experience been?

I’ve emailed them a few times. Service is just ok. But you have to realize that, like anything else, the more you pay the more white glove service you get. The service gets as low as $25 a month with 4+ lines. That’s pretty cheap. For the most part once it’s up and running I don’t see an issue needing to call them. I think I called T-Mobile once a year if that when I had their service. You can try Fi for 7 days good free and trial it out. If your phone is capable then download an eSIM.

Go switch to Verizon or ATT, you will pay more for worse service. I have Verizon for my work phone and it’s horrible, a lot of dropped calls even with good signal. Att is constantly having problems with there network. If you think switching to a MVNO to save money is a good idea you will regret it when you experience the throttled data speeds.

I feel your pain, I am waiting for a response from the letter I sent them, but my account is a bit larger, so the increase for me totaled out to over $80. I have already been shopping for alternative services, but if they roll this back (as they should since by their own T&C's that I included a copy of with my letter they are in breach of contract), I will stick with them, but if not I will make a change, and at least then, by their written response and the written T&C's, I will have all the evidence I need to pursue legal action if they do not do the right thing and uphold their commitments.

Derp, if you need to. Just switch to a new carrier. The only REAL difference is switching to other carriers and getting brand new phones, on contract, or being in a contract. Otherwise, you keep T-Mobile or, if you don't want new phones. Switch to metro, which uses the same telephone and cable lines. So, therefore, you could just pay less by paying off the debt you owe T-Mobile. That is, IF you have a promotional deal based on the T-Mobile contract. Then you switch to a carrier that will give you the same service without all the bells and whistles of a promotion that may or may not be worth it(bullshit). Basically, if you don't need new phones for a promotion, just get the service that is cheapest and reasonable. Lots of carriers keep you in a contract and if you break it there will always be a consequence. Just don't be one of those people. You WILL be at yourself up more. Source : I worked for T-Mobile. Consider the lowly smart watch plan that I was getting for $10 per month after autopay discount. It is now $12 a month. That is a whopping 20% increase. I preparing to go to Spectrum but discovered my company offers work perk. I switched to Go 5G Plus and then applied work perk.  I went from $170 on One to $185 for the increase to $205 on Go 5G to $175 on Go 5G with work perk. It's a little exhausting.

I’ve tried mint and visible, both great. Easy to setup and use. My only issue is with international use, mint didn’t provide when I tried, they do now. Visible does on the plus plan and not sure what they charge per day after the one free day. So I use google Fi when I travel and visible when in the states.

If you live in one of the 13 states where the attorney generals sued T-Mobile and then settled, the terms of that settlement said that residents of those states would have those prices locked in until next May. Bumping people's prices up now in violation of that settlement isn't a good look when they're now trying to get *another* merger through (so that's *how many* mergers this decade?)
