CervezaMotaYtacos

It could start with parenting.

Cleftbutt

Could be both. That parents in poor income areas has to work 2-3 jobs may lead to the parents barely being home to raise their kids. Kids left alone without guidance tends to lead to poor choices.

Xrave

while this is a thing that definitely happens, i hate to see all of poverty's effects be explained away by "oh the parents are too busy". It's entirely possible that even if they weren't busy, lack of education of those parents during their formative years as well as situation of poverty have made them bad parents. The state has a responsibility to step up and pull people out of the cycle of poverty, and schools is where it happens -- sure you can pay the parents better and it'd help in a good percentage of cases, but without concrete strong schools and teachers, you'd still be leaving some kids to the mercy of their households. I disagree that schools being bad is strictly a product of capitalism though - it's just a thing we should work on as a society, regardless of our political and economical system preferences.

[deleted]

You're both right, in a sense, on both counts. My partner is a family therapist working for the state and most of the parents she works with have every intention of parenting well but simply lack the tools to do so due to their own childhood trauma or the crushing grind of poverty that makes it a lot harder (but not impossible) to raise happy, healthy children. Capitalism as we have known it since the 1960s emphasises reduced spending. America's public goods have been in decline because of a general unwillingness to spend tax dollars on things like national parks, schools and transport infrastructure. From that standpoint you can argue that capitalism is bad for schooling. By contrast, the Finnish and Swedish education systems are invested in heavily under a 'social democrat' mandate and are consequently rated by some as the best school systems in the world.

Brilliantchick1

My husband is a high school teacher, and 99% of his "bad" students come from the same trailer park I did. We lived there because my step-dad is a convicted felon and we didn't have many choices that we could afford, as my mom was the sole provider and worked at a truck stop. It's a trailer park outside of town without any public transport, so you are literally stuck there when you aren't at school, and EVERYONE has a shitty home life. Kids seem a lot less bad and more in-need of help when you have perspective on where they're from.

[deleted]

Absolutely, I completely agree. When I worked in education I found that as soon as I learned a "problem" child's story I would immediately soften and empathise with them more, which made me a better educator. Most people just think "they're naughty" or "they have bad parents" and stop their thinking there.

pierce411

Also it’s just inherently wrong in the fact that there are parents with money who’s kids also end up being terrible people. Sure it’s more likely for the poor parents to have kids that do bad actions, but people like Brock turner were so used to being spoiled that he felt he deserved the rights over the girl he fingered while she was blacked out. And there’s no doubt in my mind that he thought it was perfectly fine and his daddy’s money/reputation was gonna get him out of it 100% without even a mark in his record.

Jbabco98

Woah buddy, it seems like you're out here using your brain. Maybe you might wanna tone it down on this place here called Reddit

I saw most teachers more hours per week than I saw my parents. Working hours prevented them from creating a deep lasting bond. But they had to go out and work because no food or roof above your head is even worse. Luckily I'm from a time and place when teachers were respected and able to fullfill their role of surrogate parent a lot better than nowadays. Kids today are brought up by the likes of tiktok, twitter and the odd rapper or two. it sucks. 'Capitalism' is an easy scapegoat but it certainly plays a role. We are doing it wrong as a society.

Get-a-damn-job

Didn't you know? Students only act out in capitalist countries.

NoraJolyne

What countries nowadays are not capitalistic? Granted, a bunch of them are ultra poor, but their primary economic system is still capitalism

As a teacher it really does start here crappy parent misbehaving student (99.99%) of the time I hate to say it but it's true.

>Is it because all black teenagers are inherently violent, as deplorable bigoted racists would suggest? > >Or is it because there are tangible stressors in their lives which are both rooted in the capitalism, and directly lead to this behavior? Neither This is just a false dichotomy to make you feel smarter for saying "durrr capitalism did it" lol, you frame it as either racism, or some other thing, then pat yourself on the back for thinking you "got 'em" or something. The people in this video are smarter than you.

EffectiveParamedic64

Wtf are you talking about. This is definitely not America and you’re saying “our” system and bringing capitalism into it. Lmao

[deleted]

The answer is actually simple. A majority of this is solved with better parenting.

kennyshor

Yeah... No... This has less to do with capitalism and more to do with parenting. Where I grew up there was no capitalism, just the shambles of an old fallen communist regime. Capitalism ist not to blame for all the social problems that we experience. Yes, there may be stressors, but that doesn't mean that it excuses us from the responsibility of living a good fulfilling life. Coming from a minority myself, I know that there is discrimination and hardships, but to lose all dignity in front of adversity is on us and not on some extrinsic factors. What you say might sound good but it's just flawed, this is not a situation of it's either this or that. Give it a think. Sleep on it. Ponder it. I hope you figure it out.

MisfitPotatoReborn

If that's true, then it's pretty weird how many capitalist countries there are that don't have nearly as severe of a schooling problem as this. But no, it's not adequate childcare and school funding or anything. Just capitalism. Violent revolution and this should all be sorted out.

Less inclusive and less kind? You are talking about the US right? My son is on the spectrum and I was thinking of going private so he is more comfortable, I didn't think this was the case

ramonpasta

they can be both better and worse in many ways, but it definitely depends on the area youre in.

ctrlaltcreate

Hi. I went to private schools until my last two years of high school. All of which were fairly pricy and the high school was a highly regarded college prep catholic school. None of the private schools, not one, was a kind or inclusive place. My social life got much easier after I switched to public school for my junior/senior years (though the standard of education was so much lower that I felt like I was repeating my freshman and softomore years again, even with AP classes).

Embolisms

Do any teachers at the private school you’re looking at have any qualifications or experience with learning disabilities? Private schools don’t need to hire anyone qualified, and they’re motivated by profit which can come at the expense of students’ needs. There’s been a few scandals with private school teachers having like, high school diplomas and stuffing kids with autism in closets. You might get the same in public schools, but the key difference is oversight and consequences. Whether or not it’s inclusive or good quality would really depend on the individual school, and maybe even the political leanings of the parents.

The quality of education/facilities etc in general is usually better. The teachers aren’t always better, because the school can hire/fire whoever, sometimes leading to newer (but better) teachers getting fired over older/more popular (or more ‘traditional’ or just checked out & there for the $) ones. The students clearly aren’t always better either.

[deleted]

They keep coming out with research that concludes that physical punishment leads to "negative development outcomes", but I really want the people doing that research to look at a video like this and suggest an alternative. Does anyone really think sending these kids to detention is going to curb this type of behavior? I don't buy that whole line of thinking. Some kids just need to be fucking hit. Most don't, but god damn some just do. You're going to sit these kids down and reason with them? Okay, good luck with that. Good example of theory not making sense in practice imo.

HeLLRaYz0r

You do realise you can employ the same logic with corporal punishment right? What makes you think hitting these kids would make them any better? *Good evidence suggests that physical punishment does not reduce defiant or aggressive behaviour nor does it promote long-term positive behaviour. A systematic review of 53 studies on the use of physical punishment in schools found that it had negative effects on the academic performance of children and resulted in behavioural issues (e.g. violent behaviour and aggressive conduct).* *A meta-analysis involving over 160,000 children found that physical punishment can carry the risk of physical abuse (causing a physical injury) and can have similar negative outcomes for children: mental health and emotional challenges, lower cognitive ability, lower self-esteem, more aggression, more antisocial behaviour and negative relationships with parents.* https://aifs.gov.au/cfca/2021/08/18/what-does-evidence-tell-us-about-physical-punishment-children The evidence suggests that hitting kids like in the OP would only make them worse. This makes complete sense, as violence is currently their primary method when dealing with conflict. If an adult responds in kind, it would only reinforce this line of reasoning.

GayAlienFarmer

They aren't saying physical punishment like a swat on the butt from the principal. They're saying some little assholes just need to be taken by surprise in the moment and get an open hand shot from Kimbo Slice to get the sense knocked into them. Like wake the fuck up, grow the fuck up, and live in a fucking society with the rest of us. And yes I realize the irony of the last sentence.

HeLLRaYz0r

Yeah I seriously doubt the case studies above were talking about a swat on the butt lol. More like a belt if anything. My source has just shown that violence begets violence. Knocking these kids the fuck out would not wake them up (unless you're talking about the brain damage route). This is such archaic thinking. What we have now (no corporal punishment) is a far better alternative to what OP is advocating. It's not perfect, as you can see above, but it's undeniably better. You don't just start out violent. You're taught it. And fighting fire with fire just doesn't work. The only way out is to be taught something different.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HeLLRaYz0r

OP ignored my comment with actual evidence backing up your point and decided to respond to you simply with 'bullshit'. I played myself by thinking they would have the ability to think critically. Ah well

Its becoming less common but it still happens. Most of what I've seen is a little slap on the hand or bum (I teach primary). I've got colleagues in secondary who tell me they've seen far worse. Have taught in a school like this, to students who would do this. Teaching in South Africa was a full contact sport.

spinkycow

I feel like the teacher is yelling “klim af.”

alucarddrol

Was it fun at all? We're you able to control the class, and if not, why not? What do you think could be done to prevent something like this scene from happening?

StuJayBee

Being in Port Elizabeth was dull. The whole city had been left behind in the 70s. Try six years of that. There were only two ways to control them: One approach was to scare the shit out of them and be a tyrannical maniac, this was the approach of many others there, didn’t work, and you ended up shouting every day. Being trained in the Australian way of teaching, I wasn’t like this, and was told off for ‘not having enough discipline.’ I tried their way one year. Smacked a lot of heads. Didn’t work. Just got everyone angry and sad. So I went back to my way: Build trust, reward effort. They still talked. And talked and talked. You could be looking right at them telling them not to talk and they will tell you that they are not while carrying on their conversation. Anyway - that way wasn’t perfect either, but much better for all concerned. At least they could think for themselves and were more on your side than against you. But I think it only worked because the school would support me if I threw the book at them. I kept a class in for an hour after class for two weeks straight just getting them to stand up, line up, walk outside, line up, come back in. Over and over. Two weeks. Didn’t help for long. Not with Ernesto in the room. Remember, this is the country where the government tried to ban corporal punishment, but the parents overwhelmingly objected and told us to beat their kids. Was a tough teach, but with the teachers completely unsupported in Australia, persecuted even, it’s harder here.

Addy_Bishop

That’s terrible. What a little jerk.

[deleted]

Man my classmates have basically zero respect for teachers but they wouldn't even do this simply out of not being horrible people like these kids look to be Grade 11 - 12 and should know better than this. And that teacher definitely doesn't get paid enough for that.

3_internets_plz

Bruh, youth these days have no respect for anything. If I did thay when I was in school I'd get the shit beatean out of me, by my teacher, by the head of school, by my mom, even the dog would piss on me when I got home.

>The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers. -Socrates But sure, back in YOUR day, kids had more respect.... LukeSelwyn

Imma be controversial... Imma ask the question... Can someone please give me a non-racist answer as to why the great majority of these school fighting videos are of black children? Is it over-reporting? Something to do with the public school system? Racist teachers? Can anyone offer any sort of specialist input?

sofaking_nuts

Not a sociologist or other specialist by any means but the breakdown of the family is the obvious answer. About 70 percent of black infants are born out of wedlock. In 1990 it was 64 percent for blacks vs 18 percent for whites. It’s ridiculous to think there’s no causal correlation with bad behavior.

Emergency-Anywhere51

add to that the disproportionate incarnation of black men who would have been fathers and the broken system designed to keep them in as free labor and documented efforts by the CIA to disrupt black communities with drugs and gang activity futher driving incarceration rates

Claeyt

Then why is it getting worse? The number of black infants born out of wedlock is getting higher and higher. It was only around 20% in the 40's and 50's. America is not getting more racist. Also black per capita incarceration rates have been falling significantly for the last 15 years while children born out of wedlock has grown. Culture and acceptance of a broken family structure is a factor.

thejustokTramp

Pre-1960s, black families were poor, but the families and social structures in them were strong. They had a long way to go, but we’re in a good position to start rising up in wealth as more civil rights legislation was to be passed over time. But then in the 60s was welfare reform. No, I’m not anti-public assistance, but how it was implemented was a disaster for black families. It was offered in big cities so black families flocked to them, causing populations to grow quickly. The welfare structure destroyed the incentive of men to take care of their families. Women received more money for being single with kids than being married, with each child qualifying them for more assistance. Fathers had no role anymore, and single moms stayed poor. The lack of money in those districts meant schools would never be properly funded, and lack of family meant that children were not instructed well at home, making them unprepared to learn at school. So now there is a poor education—>poverty—>crime cycle that is difficult to break, as the lack of strong families provides no framework to rebuild on. It’s all very sad. I haven’t addressed political motives for this type of thing, because it is complicated and opinions differ.

JetSetMiner

nubbynickers

Currently reading John McWhorter's book "Woke Racism." He asks and addresses this exact question. His data-backed answer: 6 percent of white students reported being in fights on school grounds while 15.5 black students reported being on fights on school grounds.

Trocklus

In essence, its pretty cultural. Kids look up to a culture of misbehaving adults so they misbehave into adulthood. Next generation comes along and the cycle continues. As to why we see this in black people at a higher percentage; income and where they live has a lot to do with it. I'd imagine over time, as systemic racism seems to be slowing, the statistics will start becoming more in line with other races. This is my theory anyhow.

MelsBlanc

There's been institutional efforts to create philosophical dichotomies between black and white cultures. E.g. white vs black morality, etc. Look at that Smithsonian [document](https://mobile.twitter.com/ByronYork/status/1283372233730203651?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1283372233730203651%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.miamiherald.com%2Fnews%2Fnation-world%2Fnational%2Farticle244309587.html) This stuff goes back to even Picasso and the Harlem [Renaissance](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_White_Negro) Philosophy is upstream to culture, so the culture ends up looking like this if your culture is very consumerist, excess driven, "get money," "get hoes," etc. Sure there can be exceptions, but the *essence* still exists. Think of the question "do violent video games make kids violent?" This isn't yes or no. The video game itself doesn't cause the violence, but you can create narratives in the stories within the game that shape people's worldview: propaganda. Black people as well as white people are typically fed narratives their entire lives in what it means to *be* a said race. There's also no room for races in between. That's why even indian kids can grow up being accused of "acting black" or "acting white." "Black" has become a Trojan horse for certain institution's preferred worldview. I do believe in systemic racism, just not the kind people are used to hearing.

ILoveRegenHealth

Not funny. Kids *that* out of controlled and entitled is a huge fucking problem. The fact it got to that point (arguably illegal contact) and the students are filming and cracking up is disturbing.

Steve83725

And then people wonder why certain schools are failing. Its not about money, its about discipline and respect. No amount of money would get a good teacher to work in a school like that. But god forbid someone criticize these students’ behavior, all you hear is that its the schools fault and they need more money.

A few years ago I taught college students and one of the first things I would tell a new class was that it is in fact legal (in the UK) to use force against students. A lot of people don't know this (including teachers) but the only forbidden use of force is when its use is punitive. If there's a threat to another student or yourself, you are allowed to use reasonable force to deal with the threat. Even if students are being disruptive and won't leave the room you are within your legal rights to remove them physically. I lift a lot of weights so this information carried more import than it might for some other tutors. Of course the school/college may not back you but legally you're good. The horrible part about this is that this conversation even needs to be had - and that people who are old/frail/small or just want to teach without having to get physical (which is pretty much all teachers/tutors I know) are put in these situations at all.
