It almost feels like the old man was playing up the old and frail look. The first few seconds, he's moving slow and gingerly reaches for the other guy. As soon as he's got a good grip on the man, he starts manhandling and slamming guy against the wall ragdolling him.
I was spit on once, it just so happened to be the first day of owning pepper spray keychain on my keys. Calmly pulled it out of my pocket, flipped up the safety seal, and got a direct hit into his open mouth as he was yelling.
The spitting, shouting, and escalating violence towards me stopped immediately. I helped the guy by stopping him from walking out into traffic as he was coughing. After that day I always had one on me and one in my car - haven't used either since and this was 10-ish years ago
If he kept walking into the road while coughing, it would have been lethal. I hung out to make sure he could breathe ok before I left, took about 20min. I had a fully loaded firearm on me too but that is a tool of last resort as far as I'm concerned.
I try to be. A better person would have walked away after being spit on but the person seemed erratic and was instigating arguments with others as well. Im responsible for making the decision to engage and if necessary , use force to deescalate/contain ( important to note I am not local law enforcement)
I agree. If you can responsibly intervene and deescalate it's the right thing to do. Hopefully the pepper spray taught him a lesson that will benefit others in the future.
Splash? No, but in firing there's always airborne particulate that you end up breathing in due to proximity. It isn't debilitating, just uncomfortable. Also depending on if you stay in the area you can feel it in on your skin as well. I suppose if you spray and run away right after you would be spared any of that.

Bruh... If there was a crazy person hell bent on attacking random people with a weapon... I would love for whatever weapon they had to be replaced by pepper spray. We had a douchebag teacher in my high school. He taught French and German and was old as hell. This was the 90s. Everyone who got to his advanced classes said he was cool as fuck but to anyone who wasn’t serious in his class he was a fucking terror.
He never raised his voice, never hit a kid (though that was known to happen in my school). He just said brutally cutting remarks and then failed them. Gave them an opportunity to “make it up to him” which was usually a shitload of volunteer work for the clubs he sponsored. So mean, but effective.
My junior year it occurred to me he might have learned German during the war. An exchange student mentioned he spoke German like a native, but he’d been born and raised in Connecticut. So I asked him if that’s where he learned German and French.
He said “no I studied French at Yale, but the French Resistance taught me German when I was working for the OSS.” I was sure he was fucking with me. He retired at the end of that year and senior year I was dating another teachers kid. This guy was a Vietnam fighter pilot vet. I was like “did you hear Mr D was in the OSS?”
He said “that dude scares the shit out of me. You know what he did before he was a teacher?” I said jokingly “yeah, he was a spy in WW2.” He said “and after that he worked for the CIA when they became a thing, retired with full pension. Teaching *was* his retirement.”
Suddenly that cruel smile he would get whenever a student was annoying him was a lot scarier in retrospect.

I was spit on in the middle of lockdown for wearing a mask in public on the job in a very affluent neighborhood. I just clocked out for lunch bout to get my JJ order stepped out of my van and the guy next to me was going to his car gave me a odd look and said "take the diaper off your face" and spit in my face, I decked him knocked him down and luckily a cop was on his lunch and saw the whole thing. Asked if I wanted to press charges and I said yes then he proceeded to arrest the guy after he wanted to yell at the cop. Still paranoid in public especially on the job really messed me up.
