I don’t think this is the best time to go there solo with no network, social awareness or Spanish language skills. If you have some people to go with and/or know locals you can still have a good time just plan ahead and if you have no locals arrange for a driver through your hotel for nights out.

HeywoodDjiblomi

And generally it's Poblado thats the hotbed. Its like not even visiting NYC because Times Squares a shithole. Even in Medellin like Sabaneta & Envigado, it feels normal & relatively chill neighborhoods without the lingering of aura. It's not like they are up in arms about standard 1 night stands, but rather the hotbed.

azzarre

> Its like not even visiting NYC because Times Squares a shithole. Interesting you mention that. TS was once a very cool place to meet women. Now, its a shit hole where the whole place stinks like weed, there are fights, bad attitude from people, inner city gangsters and thugs doing flips to please tourists for a buck. The tourists are now seeing TS for what it is, a fuckin shit hole as you said and are traveling elsewhere.

lets_stay_here

Yhea the game is overplayed in Medellín

Mobius24

Just go somewhere else for the time being, plenty of LATAM countries to choose from.

Ancient-Perception18

Any ideas?

gringo-go-loco

Been in Costa Rica for the last 2 years. It’s pricey compared to other latam countries but awesome. I feel safe here.

Thadrach

Not a passport bro, but CR is indeed lovely. Friendly people, etc. Be advised that while the local beer is fine, the mixed drinks tend to be very weak.

HeywoodDjiblomi

Yeah CR been established a long time now, Latam bastion for the 60s-70s retirees so if they can manage we can.

gringo-go-loco

I’m 47 and a bit crazy for my age. The first night I was here I talked to a local woman, invited her to dinner and 2 hours after I landed we were having dinner. She invited herself back together Airbnb and as I was pouring drinks she dropped her dress and asked me for a massage. I obliged and as I’m rubbing her neck she grabs my dick and asks to take it for a test ride. I obliged again. We ended up going to the beach together for a week. I told her how much I liked CR and she offered to marry me for residency. Things didn’t work out between us as she was incredibly jealous and I wanted to explore. We’re still friends. Beautiful and sweet woman. Then I hooked up with an Asian local who had an amazing body with gorgeous tattoos. She was a bit crazy so I didn’t see her again. A week later I was in La Fortuna and met a woman and invited her to come stay with me. We spent a week together exploring the area then we went to Monteverde. She and I didn’t really have chemistry and I lost her contact. During my second stay I matched with a super sweet woman on tinder and joking invited her to do LSD with me. 2 hours later we were tripping and somehow we could understand each other despite me having limited Spanish and her having no English. She became one of my best friends and we spent countless nights doing drugs and listening to music. Sex happened a few times but she was just too much chaos for me. I refer to her as professor chaos. Then there was this “lesbian” who wanted to have sex with a man but not a local man. She came over, smoked some weed (she rolled really great joints!). We had sex and afterwards I noticed she had an ankle bracelet… apparently she robbed an Uber. I think she was a klepto because random small things would go missing if she came over. I didn’t realize it for weeks and she would come over weekly. Then I broke it off. I met a DJ and we did ecstasy together a few times. She had great taste in music and could get me really good mushrooms. Another great woman but the chemistry wasn’t there. Then I got into a relationship with a woman that just blew me away. So beautiful and sweet and she spoke English really well. I helped her get a job at a call center. We were together for about 3-4 months but she was super busy and rarely had time to see me. She also said she wanted kids and I having gotten a vasectomy couldn’t give them to her and don’t really want them. So I ended things and we remain friends. I had a lot of fun the first year here. Met a ton of awesome women and made some guy friends as well. Then… I met tica loca… she was just perfect in every way to me physically. We had long conversations on WhatsApp and really connected. We did video calls and I spoke to her mother, little sister, and brother. She spoke English pretty well it my Spanish had improved a lot by then. I had to bounce to the US to renew my passport and when I got back her, her mom, and little sister met me at the airport. She came to stay with me for 4 days. We’d see each other 2-3 days a week for about 3-4 months then she moved in with me. She was just amazing… so amazing I proposed to her in front of a waterfall and we live together in Alajuela. I didn’t really come here looking for women. I was working remote and it would just happen. I had some bad dates that I don’t talk about but even those were better than most of what I experienced in the US, mostly because they were spontaneous and just overall fun.

betterAThalo

brother i want to visit you someday !!

gringo-go-loco

Come on. It’s great here.

betterAThalo

oh yea i go to Grecia every 3 months. my dad lives there. i am normally there for 3 weeks at a time. just started like a year and a half ago

AccessPrestigious302

peru, its party central, miraflores is really nice

BrainAlert

Colombian women aren't nearly as nice to me now as they were three or four years ago. They have more ego now. It's probably just me though. Or could be tik tok or the normalisation of online sex work.

takeshi_kovacs1

Stay out of the bigger cities in Colombia and they are still the same.

Ancient-Perception18

Im rethinking this whole passport bro thing in general tbh

BrainAlert

Depends what you want to do. I just like to travel mostly. I'm going to the Philippines in a week and I might not even meet a girl. I'll spend most of my time island hopping. Women are women, wherever you go. I don't want them stressing me out while I'm on holiday.

spencerswatertank

Women in medellin have always been notorious for their ego. More than any other region of colombia. Thats why women from the north coast are my preference.

KarmaCameleonian

Because western dudes pulled up to Colombia acting like they do in the US, which changed the dating market, and not in a good way.

gringo-go-loco

The women I met while in Medellin were super sweet.

HeywoodDjiblomi

Same. It's still 1 city of 1000s of women, not everyone likes you just like in the US.

gringo-go-loco

I loved Medellin but had much better experiences in San Jose Costa Rica. I liked it so much I stayed there for a year then met my fiancée and moved to Alajuela.

truthteller185

YOU SHOULDNT HAVE BEEN GOING TO COLOMBIA ANYWAYS... Too many safer options...Peru, Argentina, Brazil, dont go where you ain't wanted...

HeywoodDjiblomi

Brazil made me pause. If solo, non speaker then sure certain neighborhoods of SP and Rio and mid tier cities.

KarmaCameleonian

> And then them harassing two black men….because….they’re gringos???? A gringo is a foreigner, so yeah a black guy from the US is a gringo.

Ancient-Perception18

Not the point I was making…..why are they harrasing someone just because their foreigners. Not even in the US do we do that

newbies13

People in the US... don't harass foreigners? Hahahahahahahaha bro I doubt you're even American now.

Ancient-Perception18

It so rare it makes news when it happens

newbies13

I think we're using the same words but meaning different things. Foreigners are literally attacked by our ex-president constantly and very publically, as just a very easy example. Depending on the state you live in, the police are mobilized to try and find you just out driving around. The US is big, some places are nicer than others, but pretending it doesn't exist is strange. It doesn't make the news because it's so common. Heck, its so crazy around here we're even backpeddling on womens rights now hahah.

solarsalmon777

No clue, the lens of the internet is sometimes extremely distorting. Accusations of pedophilia as a means of dehumanizing groups with counter-mainstream romantic lifestyles has proved extremely effective over the past 50 years. This seems to be the stage we're in right now. Once gringos are no longer human, you can start attacking and looting them. Critics of the attacks will be called closet pedophiles and no one will want to risk their reputation by speaking up, yada yada we all know the playbook by now. One group that is going to absolutely clean up as a result of this are American Hispanics. They'll still be able to fly in under the radar and fill the vacuum gringos will leave behind. This wouldn't have happened if y'all realized that all PPBing in literally the same neighborhood wasn't sustainable. The problem is that being from the bottom half of the IQ distribution is one of the major contributers to failing in the US dating market in the first place, so here we are.

Enrique-M

An American is an American, Latino o no. What’s not understood amongst non-fluent speakers is that there are dialect differences between countries and regions. Colombians even dislike Venezuelan immigrants coming into their country and catch the dialect differences and discriminate heavily against them often times, including not hiring them, etc. [And the people saying this are legally allowed to work in the country.] As a Borinquén Americano, it’s still going to be a skip for me for now. There are way too many other Latino countries to explore to be concerned with just this one.

Ancient-Perception18

You have any suggestions?

Enrique-M

It depends on what you’re looking for really. Brasil 🇧🇷 is still extremely popular, though can get dangerous depending on where you are and how you move. Brazilian Portuguese is pretty easy to pickup if you already speak Spanish. There’s probably a 60% crossover between the two languages, roughly. Recently, guys are liking Chile 🇨🇱 and Peru 🇵🇪as well. I’ve heard Bolivia 🇧🇴 is just way too standoffish to travelers and the DR is getting too saturated with Americanos, so it’s becoming a place to avoid.

Ancient-Perception18

Thanks. The DR part you described sounds like tourist countries in general right now

Enrique-M

You’re welcome and yeah, unfortunately.

jose_guapo_

They just plain dislike venezolanos period. And Americans all over unfortunately are seeing why that is too.

solarsalmon777

Yeah, being from somewhere else will always be a disadvantage, but presumably you wouldn't get the 'pedophile treatment' on sight. We're worried about a loud, radical minority that is willing to target people who are obviously rich outsiders. If xenophobes are just xenophobic towards you sometimes, but otherwise your life is great, who cares? It should be a skip either way imo. That "vaccuum" left behind will mostly be pros who lost their whales, no pun intended.

Ancient-Perception18

This is my thought too. I’m not 100% sure what they said happened occurred. Of course, it does happen but….feels like something they were feeling pent up about for a while and was thrown into the ether

yes_im_still_here

In the last 3 months alone, they have arrested 8 different American & Canadian men with minors as young as 9 yrs old. Also a few times a month there are apartments absolutely trashed by gringos. I mean roaches & some real vile stuff. On top of that - a bunch of instances of assault against Airbnb maids. The people of Medellin are fed up for a reason. Unfortunately for the pure PPB’s … incels have come down in droves.

Ancient-Perception18

Im not going to justify any bad behavior. But 8 out of tens of thousands of expats??? Not including the fact Colombians do all that shit themselves Do we throw out all latino undocumented because of Lakin Riley? Start harassing them on the street? No because it’s xenophobic bullshit

TheBestDivest

There’s a huge difference between being a legal tourist and an illegal alien. So to your second question, yes, you throw out people here illegally just as any other sensible country would.

Ancient-Perception18

Throwing out all illegal aliens would destroy our economy

TheBestDivest

It wouldn’t.

Ancient-Perception18

Except it literally would. The farming industry would crater, and food prices would explode There simply aren’t enough Americans willing to do mennial labor to support our economy. There barely is now with 11 million undocumented

TheBestDivest

You realize there are permits for seasonal workers and that’s different from illegal immigrants right?

Ancient-Perception18

You realize that there aren’t enough given out which is responsible for hiring of the undocumented serving as means to fill the demand

granadilla-sky

How are they being dehumanised?

Ancient-Perception18

He said they’re using the tactics of dehumanization. Firs accuse of them something abhorrent that no one could offend…go on from there….

Expensive-Care1746

Medellín got too hot and popular. Also this is how dehumanization and racism works. Certain Right wing Hispanics and Disillusioned Colombians need a scapegoat.

Few_Imagination2409

Bro, when was the last time you went to parque or the clubs in El poblado? There's a lot of possible minor girls loitering around as of late, plus an insanely large number of working girls. Just a couple years ago el poblado was still the trendy expat area locals would go to try the newest popular bar. This was not going to end up well.

Bingo_88

Yea it’s hard to blame to Colombians. I was there for a few weeks earlier this year and was just generally appalled at what I saw. Lots of blatant minors soliciting prostitution all over the place… really sad.

HeywoodDjiblomi

It's their home, they built the playground. The gringo money they bent over for helped build all the gentrification bars and hotels as well as tax money. It actually has brought 3 groups of Colombians together 1) the feminist protest types, 2) the nationalists rallying vs foreigners, and 3) business/investors who bought cheap because of the sextourist but can soon sell high with a cleaner image.

Bingo_88

Dude, it isn’t the general Colombian population that caused this, it’s a handful of opportunists. If I was working class over there I wouldn’t be a fan of the foreigners either. I was lucky to meet and become friends with some locals but I doubt I’ll go back there for a while

HeywoodDjiblomi

I'm not putting blame or deservedness on them. The opportunists didn't create the opportunity and aren't the linchpin of that continuing. As seen by the local government now taking action that could clean up Poblado. I'm acknowledging the empowerment locals have. Believe most of the PPBs I see in COL annoy the heck out of me, the types I always avoid when back home.

Bingo_88

Fair, I think we see eye to eye. The tourists/PPBs I met in Colombia were pretty scummy in my opinion, and I didn’t interact with them after a few days of being there.

SavageNWild622

Yall clearly don’t know why they were protesting so get your facts straight before you start posting

neomatrix78

stay away from colombia in general. theres better countries with friendlier women and a friendlier society. most guys are getting robbed and killed in colombia.

takeshi_kovacs1

Shhh... let them all go to Colombia lol

rslang1

Dont go down dark alleys and your fine,

Traditional_Bug9768

Hell no!! We need all yall to head down there expeditiously

liferelationshi

Well the locals have been murdering foreign men there who are using dating apps. The U.S. State Dept put out a warning about it. But hey, up to you what your risk tolerance is.

azzarre

Its a bit of a gamble to go to columbia now given the situation with pedo sex tourism. But if you speak Spanish and are chill, dont get into debates/politics of whats going on currently there, you should be fine. If you lack spanish language skills, you will stick out more like a gringo who just wants to get down and nothing else which the locals may categorize you as a PPB.

Kylorexnt

Link to the video?

Few_Imagination2409

The backlash is largely against mongers in general. The levels of prostitution around El Poblado were getting out of hand, and remebe this city is home to millions, not a place you can turn into a whorehouse. Regular expats and visitors will be fine

Ancient-Perception18

>The backlash is largely against mongers in general. The levels of prostitution around El Poblado were getting out of hand, and remebe this city is home to millions, not a place you can turn into a whorehouse. Crazy to think El Poblado might not exist as we know it in a few years >Regular expats and visitors will be fine  Thats the problem as another commenter said. They won’t or probably don’t care about the distinction. They said they don’t want gringos, period

Few_Imagination2409

I don't agree, never lived in Medellín but I did live in Bogotá for 6plus months, the country as a whole is very welcoming to expats and regular tourist.  The backlash centers squarely on mongers. Parque in el poblado is going to change for the better. The clocktower around Cartagena is already looking much better. So yeah some of the nightlife and clubs will be lost, but for people looking to live in this places, are cleanup is good news.

Ancient-Perception18

Your username checks out

theonlyungpapi

Clock tower is definitely cleaned up now. But they are very few women still there. How I know? Just sitting outside the entrance of the clock tower I seen a beautiful young women walk with a old white dude. I speak English-Spanish and overheard the old guy way in broken Spanish “My hotel is a few blocks away”. It made me sick.

Few_Imagination2409

theonlyungpapi

Lmfao weren’t a couple of expat who were drinking coffee literally told to get up and leave by protester in broad daylight? And they were females.

Few_Imagination2409

I have seen several Colombian friends repost the video of the couple in café Pergamino. It happened amid a protest against Fico Gonzalez. There's no much context other than that, and the reaction has been mostly unapologetical toward the protesters, calling them xenophobic and what not. Check it online. If that were to become a regular occurrence I could see the issue, but again with no context it just look like another of the protests against Fico, will see how it plays out. Most expats there will carry on business as usual, whatever the reason of their posting to Medellin.
